there's bears in the wood and they're out to get me
and i'm safe from harm if i stay in this chalet
Ami had originally signed up for Quidditch because of Alexx. Her infatuation with the blonde Slytherin had led her to sign up for all sorts of extracurricular activities in hopes of impressing her. Alas, her efforts had been for naught, and in the end, Alexx still rejected her. It stung, knowing that she would never like her like that, but there wasn't much she could do. But, on the other hand, Ami had discovered a community where she finally felt like herself, and she felt like people appreciated her for the things she had previously hated. After all, there was generally very little use for brawn in a school of magic, but on the Quidditch pitch? With a bat in her hand whilst she was astride a broom, her teammates worshipped her like a god and her opponents feared the wrath of her strength. Her love for the sport had grown exponentially over the past few years, faster than she ever could have expected. Quidditch pushed her, physically and mentally, more than anything else in her life. Even in her life before Hogwarts, martial arts and piano had not tested her limits as Quidditch did. That, coupled with her recent rise to captaincy of broom racing, meant that Ami spent nearly every minute and every second of her free time on flying, whether it be out on the pitch, training with her teammates, or in her dorm room, furiously planning future practices and coming up with new plays for Quidditch.

And yet, despite all of this time and effort dedicated to her sports, the results weren't showing that she was an asset to the team. Aside from a single win against Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff hadn't won a single match since Ami had joined the team. She was supposed to be a big asset to the team, a replacement for Kovacs, but she felt like she was some sort of curse. No matter how hard she tried, how long she trained, or how many plays she came up with, Hufflepuff just couldn't seem to catch a break. The match against Gryffindor right before Aaron resigned from the team had been one of the bloodiest affairs Ami had ever been involved in, with the minor exception of getting set on fire during her first year. She had watched her teammates, her friends, plummet from the sky, their bodies hitting the ground and crumpling with sickening thumps, one after another. Aaron falling had been particularly difficult for her: she had been entrusted to fill in the massive shoes he'd left behind as co-captain, and now she had failed him. His body lay unnaturally on the ground a hundred feet below them, and she couldn't help but feel like it was her fault.

When he resigned, the feeling of failure only deepened. She had hoped that the next year would be different, that she would be able to prove to Professor Browne and her teammates that she was the right choice as their co-captain, but the matches against both Gryffindor and Slytherin had been bloodbaths as well. Many nights following the two matches had been spent wide awake, the combination of the upcoming OWLs with the pressure she faced from the Headliner, Quidditch, and now Broom Racing being too much to allow her mind to quiet enough to surrender itself to sleep. On the nights she did manage to drift off, she was greeted with visions of bodies on top of bodies, broken and bloodied on the ground. Aaron, Quinn, Ethen, Howard, Atlas, and all of her other teammates, all of them unconscious or even sometimes dead, and Ami was tasked with bringing all of them to the Hospital Wing. When she tried, their bodies were impossibly heavy. No matter how hard she strained, no matter how tight her grip around their chests and arms, their bodies would barely move, and she was left screaming on the Quidditch pitch until she woke up.

Was she good enough? Did she deserve to be co-captain? Did she even deserve to be on the team? Every neuron in her brain right now was telling her that she was a worthless piece of shit. Now, a week before their match against Ravenclaw, Ami was frantically trying to find a way to ensure their victory. Not by cheating, necessarily, but more of an insurance policy. A guarantee that they would not come out of this season winless. Spells were a no-go on the pitch, as they were too easily seen by the referee and Ami was simply too terrible at magic to even bother attempting it. But potions... maybe potions would be more practical. She wasn't exactly good at brewing potions, but she was certainly better than she was at duelling. A few hours of research in the library yielded a somewhat challenging but intriguing solution, so Ami found herself spending her Saturday afternoon in the Potions classroom, hunched over a workbench.

Her solution was to brew a few doses of the Vitamix Potion and slip it into her teammates' breakfasts the morning of the match. Professor Wickham-Deacon had mentioned during their lesson on the potion that Quidditch players had attempted to use such a potion in matches before, but it was akin to doping or taking steroids in the No-Maj world. Luckily for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, however, Ami wasn't some do-good, Harry-Potter type Gryffindor. If her teammates being more aware, no matter how illegal the method, led to fewer of them in the Hospital Wing at the end of the day, then she wasn't going to get her head caught up in the rights and wrongs of cheating. Every other team did it too, what with all the blatching Ravenclaw was notorious for doing on the pitch, and Ami couldn't bear the thought of having to carry her friends to the Hospital Wing again.

Now, seated at her usual seat in the very back of the classroom (she tended to get a lot of complaints of classmates being unable to see the board or the professor when she sat in front), Ami began to brew her potion. Considering that the fifth years had learned about this potion fairly recently, she was confident that she would be able to brew it without much trouble at all. However, when she flipped her textbook open to the Vitamix recipe, her lips pursed together as she realized that maybe it wouldn't be as straightforward as she had originally hoped.

It wasn't outlandishly complicated, by any means, but Ami also had never been very good at following directions. She didn't have a copper cauldron, so she placed her own tin cauldron on the burner and lit the burner. As the cauldron heated up, she began crushing the standard ingredient and essence of wormwood into the required paste. She added it to the cauldron, and while she waited for the potion to turn gray, she took out her Quidditch notebook and reviewed her notes for their next practice, as well as her notes from their last practice. However, as she was prone to do, Ami got lost in the world of Quidditch and didn't notice when the potion finally turned a dull gray color. Only when it began smoking in the cauldron did she notice, and her instant panic was accompanied by a slew of colorfully descriptive curse words. This wasn't supposed to happen, was it? She immediately removed the cauldron from the burner and extinguished the flame, but the contents continued smoking. "Oh my god..." she groaned, scrambling to find her wand. Gripping it with a violently shaking hand, she muttered "Aguamenti!" as firmly as she could, but no water came out of the tip of her wand. Several more fervently shouted "Aguamenti!"s later, the cauldron was now filled to the brim with sloshing gray liquid, and it was still smoking.

Unfortunately for the fifth year Hufflepuff, it was at this moment that she could hear footsteps approaching the Potions classroom. Footsteps that she had no doubt were Magdalena's. "Oh, for fuck's sake," she swore, glancing around the classroom for a place to hide. Under her desk? No, she was too tall... The professor's desk? No, it was basically just one of those fold-out tables you set out at picnics. What about the storeroom? Ami darted to the storeroom, her hand frantically wrapping around the handle and twisting it with all her might. To her dismay, it appeared that Magdalena had locked the storeroom specifically to send any snooping fifth year Hufflepuffs into even more of a panic spiral. Glancing around the classroom wildly as the sound of footsteps drew closer, Ami's brain immediately went to her arsenal of Transfiguration spells, which was her preferred branch of magic. What could she do? What spell would fix this mess? Think, think, think!

Maybe she could scare Magdalena away. That would totally work, right? With a crack of her neck, red-headed, freckled, 6'1" Ami Procoppio would grow a meager five inches, but suddenly gain an extra 100 pounds and a whole lot more hair. A hulking Marsican brown bear now stood in the Potions classroom, looking at the door to the classroom with as terrified of an expression a bear could have.

The day was the dictionary definition of ordinary. A perfectly average day for the potions professor, without a hint of peculiarity nor surprise. In fact, Magdalena had found that she’d spent most of the day operating on auto-pilot. The classes had been exceptionally straightforward, without need for complexity or any sort of need to turn her mind to questions beyond the typically academic. All in all, the day was unquestionably dull. Not that Magdalena felt the need to complain about such, after all, if she desired for her every waking moment to be taken up by matters of life and death and ponderings as to the very nature of the universe and alchemical truths, then she’d not have become a professor. No, the simple delight in teaching students was reward enough, excitement enough.

So it was, with that sense of contentment and general cheer filling her core, the professor returned to her classroom. There were a few papers left to grade, then she’d likely find an excuse to retire early for the night.

Her good mood evaporated immediately upon her entry into her classroom.

The acrid smell of smoke assaulted her within mere moments of opening the door. Immediately, the professor braced herself, subconsciously reaching for the wand holstered at her belt. But it was the assault on her sense of sight that caused her to step back. A sloshing cauldron filled with a disgusting grey sludge, smoking and reeking, sat at one of the work spaces. The burning fog lingered at the top of the classroom, gathering as miasma. Yet, she could not bring herself to focus on the mockery of potioncraft that had taken place in the classroom, for a bear stared at her.

The wand that she’d gripped was now held in front of her, an instinctive reaction to the sight of a predator. But, through those subconscious reactions, her analytical mind continued to work. The bear was not in the least bit aggressive in its posture, moreover, its upper back was covered in scars. Two in two, it turned out, were quite easy to put together to make four. The arrival of a bear in Hogwarts was utterly and totally unusual, excepting the use of magic, and those particular markings betrayed exactly what kind of magic it was. The ministry of magic files concerning animagi were public knowledge, and Magdalena had made sure to commit those relating to her colleagues and students to memory. After all, she’d little desire to be caught unawares by someone shifting into the form of an animal.

The wand was lowered, and her expression of surprise and fear hardened instantly. Her words were cold and sharp as steel, “Miss Procoppio, drop that ruse immediately.”

Magdalena was livid. Not only had the girl snuck into her classroom, she’d desecrated it with smoke and refuse, then had the gall to hide herself in plain sight. Were she younger, perhaps, the professor would have allowed her some leniency. But she was a fifth year, about to undertake her OWLs and a year off being considered a legal adult. She knew better than this, and if she wanted the respect afforded to adults, then she needed to act like one.

“You have approximately thirty seconds to explain what the hell is going on in here,” Magdalena holstered her wand before leaning against the doorway, using her body as an effective barrier between the girl and the outside world, “And don’t even try to make excuses.”

How on earth did Magdalena know it was her so quickly? Sure, she had never kept her Animagus form a secret from anyone, and she had done that one interview with Dralt for the Headliner about being an Animagus, and she frequently paraded around the school as a bear, but... Well, maybe being able to turn into a bear was common knowledge, but Ami was more than a little shocked that her Potions professor immediately recognized her. She had no idea that any of her professors cared enough about her life outside of their classes to know what she could and couldn't do with Transfiguration. After a few slow, surprised blinks, the Marsican bear shook her shaggy head, and the towering Quidditch co-captain reappeared amidst a small showering of bear fur, looking on the verge of tears and terrified out of her mind.

A breath Ami didn't even realize she was holding escaped as Magdalena put her wand away. Her clenched and clammy fists managed to relax as she recognized that her Potions professor was not, in fact, about to jinx and hex her into the 7th circle of Hell. She considered attempting to lie her way out of this, but Wickham-Deakin was far too sharp and quick to be convinced of anything other than the truth. "There's... a Quidditch match between us and Ravenclaw coming up," she said quietly, hanging her head in shame. "You taught us about that Vitamix potion, and I thought... well, I guess I wasn't really thinking, but I was going to make some and slip it into our breakfasts so we wouldn't lose, I guess. Professor, I swear I was just trying to help them, my teammates. I don't care if I get knocked off my broom, but them... they're just kids, and Quinn and I can't protect all of them at once. We can't keep losing, Professor."

Her voice had been gradually getting quieter and quieter throughout her explanation, and she could feel her face getting hotter and hotter as if she were burning from the shame of her admittance. "I don't want to be fired," she said, her voice barely a whisper. The tears welling up in her eyes were surely about to spill over onto her cheeks at any moment, and she couldn't bring herself to look at Magdalena. "But... I know I'm letting my teammates down. If we keep losing, I feel like Doc might kick me off the team, but no matter what I do, no matter how much we practice and how much I plan, we just keep losing. They keep getting hurt, and... I didn't know what else to do." The magnitude of what she had been attempting to do was finally starting to sink in, and Ami couldn't help but feel relieved that Magdalena had showed up when she did. If she had actually successfully brewed the potion, her teammates would've gotten in unavoidable and catastrophic amounts of trouble, all because of her.

Against her better judgment, Ami let the tears stream down her face with a sharp exhale and a subsequent sniffle. "I'm really, really sorry, Professor," she said, her apology barely ghosting across her lips in the quietest of whispers. All she could do now was hope that Magdalena wouldn't send her straight to Lear to get expelled.

Anger radiated off Magdalena, the very air around her turning hot with the overflow of frustration and rage. She’d not been a professor long, not even half a year in fact, but she’d not yet encountered such an utterly brazen disregard for the rules nor disrespect for her personally. It was testament to her self-control that the only sign of her complete and total frustration was a scowl, granted one that appeared on her face as if carved into stone. Ami’s initial explanation did little to lessen her irritation, in fact, it did much the opposite. She’d been attempting to cheat, to slip her team doses of Vitamix Potion in order to afford them a win over Ravenclaw. The only thing that softened her rage, albeit only slightly, was the sheer gall the girl had to admit it forthright. She’d not attempted to bury her guilt, but had outright declared her intention to attempt to cheat Magdalena’s own house out of a win. It was almost admirable. Almost.

Magdalena crossed her arms as the explanation continued, her expression softening somewhat as the girl’s obvious distress became abundantly clear. The stone that had so solidly held her angry expression was weathered by a rain of compassion, and despite herself, the potions professor found her disquiet somewhat alleviated. Not fully, no, but she no longer had a desire to throttle the girl and demand she clean up the liquid with her tongue.

Following her final apology, one bordering on tears, she sighed.

“You understand that attempting to dose your team with potions in order to cheat is a fireable offence, no?” She said finally, her expression carefully neutral.

“I’ve no intention of hiding this from Professor Browne. None.”

As if to predict any protestations from the emotional fifth year, Magdalena spoke quickly, “But I understand where you are coming from. It’s daunting, leading a team, seeing them lose, get hurt. I understand your worry, and I understand why you did what you did…

That does not take away that what you did was a fu- exceptionally stupid thing to do. If you’d succeeded, you’d probably have voided your entire team’s chances of winning the season. If you’d somehow failed worse than you did here, who knows what may have happened.”

The professor straightened her jacket, as if looking for something to do with her hands, “It goes without saying that I’m exceptionally disappointed in you.”

Magdalena shook her head, muttering under her breath, before speaking once more, “Thank you for owning your actions. There will be consequences, yes, naturally, but it took grit to admit your intentions.”

She sighed, “Go to the closet and retrieve a mop, yes there are some in there, you are to clean up this classroom now, and without magic. We can consider it detention served.”

Ami could feel her heartbeat ringing in her ears as Magdalena's scowl deepened, suddenly realizing the seriousness of admitting her intentions. Why couldn't she just have lied? She easily could have said she was trying to practice for a practical or the OWL. Instead, her immediate and gut reaction was to tell the truth, and as many were well aware, Ami always went with her gut reaction. She may have been okay with cheating, but she had never been a liar; however, judging from the Potions Professor's expression, in this case, the truth was not much better.

A fireable offense. Maybe it was what she deserved for leading her team to injury and defeat countless times, over and over again. After all, any NFL coach would have been fired by now if they had the same track record as her. Magdalena was absolutely right, and it was a consequence that she had failed to consider before embarking on this idiotic string of actions. The tears that she had just managed to wrangle under control threatened to pour down her face once more as the shame of her actions, both on the field and in the classroom, threatened to bury her alive. Why couldn't she accept the losses? Why did she have to go and ruin her entire future? It certainly had something to do with her pride and self-esteem, her self-image, but maybe part of it was fueled by her love for her teammates and her house. Because that's what being a Hufflepuff was all about, right? Loyalty above everything and loyalty through anything.

But the idea of Professor Browne, the man who had taken a chance on the lanky redhead who had begged him to lead the Quidditch team, finding out about her mistakes nearly broke her. She was tempted to offer to sell her soul to Magdalena, but had the good sense not to attempt to bargain with the Potions professor. Her words did nothing to soothe her; the realization of Professor Browne finding out was too grave, too earth-shattering. How had she not realized this before? Of course Magdalena would tell him. But his disappointment would hurt the most. Not Magdalena's, not the team's, but Browne's. He had entrusted her with the duty and responsibility of caring for the Badgers, and she had failed him. It was as simple as that.

Wordlessly, Ami floated over to the closet, retrieving the mop as instructed. Honestly, it was probably smart that the Potions professor had instructed her to clean the mess by hand— Ami clearly was not well-versed enough in magic to clean everything up in one wave of her wand. Still silent, she set to work cleaning up the residue she had left behind, her expression unreadable for once. Her hands shook as she cleaned the workbench and the cauldron, and she refused to meet Magdalena's eyes as she worked.

But finally, once she finished, she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder and stood in front of the Potions professor, her shoulders squarely set and a bit of her usual confidence returning.

"I think I need to resign," Ami said quietly, lifting her gaze from the floor to look at her professor. "From everything, not just captaincy. The team, the Headliner... everything. I'm sorry if you don't really care, but I feel like I need to tell someone other than my cat.

"I don't think I've ever felt like I belonged at Hogwarts. Even straight-up Muggleborns have had a better time fitting in than I have. If I didn't look just like my dad I'd swear I have a bit of giant in me, because magic never seems to work for me like it should or like it does with other people. I know my mom was always disappointed, even if she never told me... she was a genius or something, y'know. And I always felt like a failure. So I did sports because it was what I was good at. It's what I am good at. And I finally found someplace where I belonged. Because it doesn't matter how good you are at Charms or History or Potions when there's a Bludger comin' right at your face, right?

"But now... now I don't know what I'm meant to do. I'm graduating in what, two years? I can barely even brew fourth year potions. I feel like a failure, I really do. So I think I need to take a couple of steps back... some really big steps. And I need to reevaluate. Because I can't keep barreling through life without thinking about the consequences of my actions."

Ami hesitated, taking a deep breath before nodding at the door. "Professor, if it isn't too much to ask... can I come with you to talk to Professor Browne? I think I'd like to tell him myself, about my resignation. And... and what I did. I need him to hear it from me. Please?"
