Fiery Flipendo Lessons PV George Henry Finished

Bubba set off from the Ravenclaw common room at 5:45. He knew he was giving himself extra time but he wanted to be early for this meeting on the off chance to George actually showed up. As he walked the halls, basically on autopilot, he went over the owl he had sent to George again and again.

George:

I don't know if you remember me but I was at your detention. I'm the one that asked you to teach us flipendo but a short time later things really went off the rails. You'd said you were to send you an owl and, well, here I am. I really do want to learn how to use that spell if you don't mind.

If you're willing to, would you kindly meet me in the dungeon next to the potions dungeon at 6 on the 15th.

Bubba

He felt kind of bad misleading George like this but he was afraid if he put the real reason he wanted to talk to him in his owl, he wouldn't want to show up. Bubba couldn't even blame him if he was honest. He could tell from the look on George's face when June asked him about it in detention that it was a memory he wanted nothing to do with and certainly didn't want to share. At the same time, there was no one Bubba could talk to about this, not even his father. His father was affected but not like Bubba. He didn't carry the guilt around that Bubba did. Everyone tried to tell him it wasn't his fault but he knew it was. It was an inescapable truth that he had to live with. He hoped by talking to George maybe he could... well he didn't even know what. Heal? Move on? He didn't even know what he wanted, but the prospect of talking to someone that may have an even remotely shared experience was something he couldn't pass up.

Bubba ducked a couple of his Ravenclaw friends outside the Great Hall on his way down. He just didn't want to talk about it with them. Fortunately, their backs were turned and he skirted by, heading towards the dungeons. He was skipping dinner, which he would no doubt regret later, but he thought that his sacrifice was worth it.

Bubba finally made it into the relative seclusion of the dungeons. He just didn't want to talk to anyone right now. He was trying to work out how to bring it up to George at all. It's a hell of a conversation started, "Hey thanks for coming so the real reason I wanted to talk to you is my sister died in a fire and I thought maybe we could talk about our shared fire experiences." Yes, that seemed legit. Forget a flip he felt like he should be more worried about a punch. Still, repressing it hadn't helped so he had to try something.

He got to the dungeon and opened the door, used his wand to start a fire in the fireplace, and then took a seat in a chair next to the door, waiting to see if George would show.

Being asked to meet in the dungeons was probably the most suspicious request anyone had ever made of him via owl, save for one girl asking him to go to the ball one time in his first year. He had had the excellent luck of being able to reject her with reason. In this instance, however, he had not made sufficiently urgent prior arrangements.

George was very punctual. He made a science of getting into, and out of, the dungeons as efficiently as possible for his potions class. There was nothing good that came out of lingering any longer. All manner of horrors lurked in the dungeons of Hogwarts, whether the staff would admit it or not. Spiders, shadow-monsters, hags, and even Slytherins made their homes down here.

He didn't need to deviate much from his usual route to make it to the neighbouring room from the potion's class, however, which made him feel that much safer. Plus, there was no doubt Professor Wickham-Deakin would hear them and lecture them about the irresponsibility of flinging flipendos in the isolate dungeon. Her words were almost as difficult to bear as her breath.

George walked in and found @Bubba McGarry waiting in his chair, like a supervillain who had just lured the hero into a trap. But he did not immediately start in curses, hexes, or monologue, so the Hufflepuff felt safe enough on the approach. There was no need to suspect any sort of misdirection had taken place, and he was quite glad that at least one of the First Years liked him enough to want him to teach them again.

"Hello," he said, drawing his wand from within his robes and setting his satchel down on a chair near to the fire. "Did you really need to set your lesson not only in the dungeons, but during dinner? It's not like we're doing something illegal, you know. We could just meet in dueling club, they let you do supervised practice there."

Bubba hadn't been waiting long when Geoge walked into the dungeon. This was positively mortifying. He hadn't actually expected him to show up. Now that he had actually shown up Bubba seemed to be having one of those moments where his brain had completely shut down. Was it possible to control+alt+delete your brain? Because that felt like what he needed at the moment. As George started to talk he felt immediately guilty for using the false pretenses he lured him there under. Still, he wasn't sure there was a good way to say hey let's talk about our shared experiences with fire.

Well, the ball was in his court now and he shook his head a couple of times. He wasn't sure if that was supposed to unfreeze his brain or what. At the same time, he was literally wringing his hands trying to get himself to do something and/or anything. He could only imagine that he looked quite insane to George, like he was having a fit.

Bubba finally reached the baseline level of composure required to make noises. He tried to talk and made a couple of unintelligible noises. Finally, he managed to actually start speaking in a language that resembled English. "Look," he began, looking very pale and speaking very low, "I just ask that you hear me out, if... if at the end of that you want to leave... or punch me... that's fine." He looked over at George and was mildly encouraged by the fact that he hadn't immediately sprinted out of the room. "When Alan told that story in the detention... I... Look there are not many people I can talk to about this." He finally just blurted it out. "When I was eight my sister was babysitting me and died in a fire. I don't know I was hoping we could... talk" He finished the statement and realized he was practically hyperventilating trying to get everything out.

George narrowed his eyes as he stared down the younger boy, keeping his wand at the ready, held tight and close to his side. He would not be the first to draw, but he would not be caught off guard - that was the most honorable way to fight. The Hufflepuff could not get a measure of the stunned Ravenclaw - Bubba just kept shaking his head around, and George was growing less suspicious and more confused with each moment. He raised an eyebrow, looking expectantly at Bubba as a few of those unintelligible noises came out of him. Was he possessed?

Perhaps he had simply become vastly more Irish since the last time George had seen him. Still, he started to speak words that George could understand, and the lad hesitantly listened to what he had to say. The offer to let George punch him was met with a very swift shake of the head. No, no. He did not like punching people. Even ones that deserved it.

The hesitant but curious George was replaced in an instant with a stone-faced statue when Bubba mentioned the story that Alan had told in detention. Stupid Alan, he thought, before immediately soothing himself with memories of the older Gryffindor bringing him hot cocoa. Sweet, stupid Alan. The boy's knuckles turned white from the grip he had on his wand. Was this some kind of ambush? No. The lad was a Ravenclaw, the least likely of all the houses to do something so stupid as to invite George to the dungeons and then provoke him. Unless he was trying to set him up? Perhaps his old articles were finally getting the backlash they deserved...

No. He was just some traumatized kid. George's rocky expression softened into a sympathetic frown. He could not know exactly how Bubba felt - he still had his brother, and nobody had died in the fire that day. But he sort of knew how he felt, too. Alone. Afraid. Carrying a weight far too heavy for a first-year to carry alone.

"Oh," George said softly, still recovering from the shock of the revelation. He wanted to say something funny to diffuse the tension, but could not imagine a joke that would be appropriate. Instead, he let it stand - an air of unease permeating the dungeon. Along with a vague moistness. But that was just sort of how the basements in castles felt. "I'm sorry."

George lugged a chair over beside Bubba and sat himself down slowly, turning his wand over in his hands idly, just fidgeting with it. The dent in the bottom was visible as he ran his thumb over it, chewing his lip lightly as he recalled his own experience. "Just, um... you know... calm down. Uh, it's okay. We can talk."

But Bubba would need to start talking first. George would just listen.

Bubba would've been more entertained by George's stun reaction if he hadn't been absolutely terrified. He had thought the odds of him actually showing up had to be practically zero, yet here he was. He could tell that George had no idea what to think of him. If only he could have an out-of-body experience at that exact moment. It would've no doubt been spectacular. He was at least relieved that George hadn't immediately hexed and/or punched by George. And then the penny dropped, and he knew that George would never in a million years have expected this. And then all of those other emotions were joined by guilt. Guilt for having lured him in like this. Guilt for the ashen look on his face. Guilt for making someone barely older than him share his burden.

George spoke but when Bubba heard him it sounded like he was a thousand miles away. He wasn't sure if it was George's voice or Bubba's mind. He was frozen, completely frozen, with no idea whatsoever what to say. He was encouraged, George had sat down and was now absent-mindedly twirling his wand. He took that as a good sign and then he heard him clearer this time. He was willing to talk at least, and that was really all that Bubba could ask.

But where to begin? He'd blurted out the headline but now that he tried to articulate the story he couldn't. He opened his mouth but words wouldn't come. He must've looked like a fish gulping for air. It opened and closed like it was on a hinge but still nothing came out. He gained enough self-control to at least close his mouth. He tried with all his might to say something, anything, but he failed. He just sat there looking straight ahead with a thousand-yard stare.

George waited patiently. He knew how hard it was to open up.

Their shared silence was broken by a quiet triple-tap of the third-year's shoe. Okay, he wasn't waiting that patiently. His stomach was gnawing at him, reminding him that they were missing dinner for what would amount to impromptu therapy session. He already knew that he was just going to give the same advice he got, maybe fix him up with a pat on the back - this was surely beyond his pay grade? He'd never even known someone who died. Even his grandparents yet lived.

But the silence had to end. The longer it lingered, the more his ears adjusted, and the more he was sure he could hear things down in the dungeons. The acoustics down here were nightmarish at the least. Drops of water, the crackling of the fire nearby the only thing keeping him from imagining darker sounds of skittering creatures and trapped kids.

"So... what happened?"
he said, with a slight shrug as if to say 'I don't know how this is meant to go either, man.' That was all he offered at first before leaning back into his chair, letting out a long sigh as he watched Bubba. Alright - this one was a Hufflepuff trademark, and although he normally reserved it for special occasions, this felt important enough to degrade himself to the level of the average badger. "Do you want a hug?"

He just sat there, trying to get his brain back into gear. Nothing worked. Bubba was never lost for words. He always had some sort of pithy comment or witty remark even if he had nothing to say. It was like when you saw a pretty girl and you wanted to walk up and say hi but you're so ensorcelled that you walk up to them and say 'banana hammock'. Finally, he heard George speak but it didn't process. Just when he was losing any and all hope that he was going to snap out of this and actually say something, George offered him a hug and started to lean in.

Well, that did the trick. Bubba visibly recoiled and tried to back his chair up. Unfortunately, the chair was about an inch from the wall so it moved that far with a loud scrape and then stopped with a thud. Bubba had jerked back so violently that he hit his head on the stone wall and it bounced back forward. He instinctively reached for the back of his head and started to massage it where it had hit the wall and checked for blood, fortunately, he didn't feel any. He took his hand and put it back on his knee and looked back at George, in mid-hugging motion, with a confused look on his face. "What the hell are you doing?"

George recoiled from Bubba's recoiling, throwing out a hand between himself and the young Ravenclaw. He was looking half worried, and half offended. Was the idea of being hugged by George really that off-putting? People loved his hugs! People demanded them and threw fits when he would not give in. It was really quite ungrateful of the younger boy to react like that - and then act as if George had attacked him. He hadn't even moved his arms into hugging position yet before the whole ordeal was over.

"What? It helps some people. Jesus, you didn't need to brain yourself," he said, glancing down at the other boy's hands to check them for blood as well. This was not going to loosely-formed plan in the slightest. Maybe he could go for the hug again and if the young lad hit his head that hard again, he might just forget about the entire ordeal. George's lip twitched, threatening to almost smile. No, he should not say that. It would be insensitive. Even if it would be very much funny.

George stood up, with no intent to hug showing in his posture or gait as he glanced to the door and then back down to Bubba. He put his hands down on the back of his chair, standing behind it now, keeping it between him and the volatile Bubba. "Just relax. And say... whatever it is that's on your mind. I don't know how helpful I can be. I'm only good at charms. And cheering charms don't work on this stuff. Trust me."

Bubba took a few very deep breaths, trying to center himself. George's leaning in and snapped him out of it. At least he knew where he was now, back in the now as opposed to back in the moment. He had been startled by George's recoiling at his recoiling, so much so that he also had a recoil aftershock. Sorry he muttered, looking up at George who at some point had moved into a standing position, probably worried about any further sudden moves. I wasn't even here if... he trailed off has his voice trailed off I was back... there...

Bubba finally managed to relax his body a bit. He was still sitting bolt upright but he was at least moving his arms, he'd been absolutely rigid before. So... he began, still trying to figure out where to begin, he decided he'd avoid talking about the fire by talking about his sister. I had a sister, Joanie. She was six years older than me and she was... wonderful. He started to look off in the distance, about to get lost in another memory, but he stopped himself. I've always been book smart, with a smart mouth. She was smart too but she was... creative. He said wistfully, drifting off into a memory of her playing Ave Maria for him. I could never play any instruments but she was... very talented. When she was 13 she and her friends started this band. I... I probably annoyed her, hanging out at her practices, following her around. I adored her.

His face went from wistful back to stony as he steeled himself for the moment. He had to tell it, had to. George was one of the few people that might understand. He couldn't carry the burden alone - the burden it had been his fault that she was gone. We only moved to Ireland when I had just turned six. My dad was a politician back home, so he'd been trying to find a job in politics over here. It was now or never, he was on the cusp, he felt himself starting to lock up again so he just started to talk. He realized that he was starting to sweat, he had a bitter taste in his mouth, and his throat was dry.

He cleared his throat and started to speak, Three years ago. my dad got offered a job managing the district office for our representative. So he and my mom went into Dublin to celebrate. They left me and Joanie at home, She was 14 by then so... he shrugged as a shiver went down his spine They thought it was safe to leave me home alone with her. His face glazed over he looked past George, back at another memory, It was a fun night, I remember we had dinner and watched some cartoons and - and then at about 8 we decided to watch the newest Spiderman movie. He took another deep breath and looked down at his feet, trying to find the courage to continue, he looked back up and forced himself to look George straight in the eyes.

We had some things of jiffy pop we had brought from the States. I - I don't know if they sell it here. It's popcorn but instead of using the microwave, you move it over a burner on the stove to pop it. He took another deep breath, he was downright clammy now but he powered through, he was almost there. She started popping the jiffy pop and I had gone to the bathroom. I got excited to go help so I was running down the hall. We had hardwood floors and I had socks on. I slid and fell, went headfirst into the wall.

It was getting harder and harder to press on but he forced himself. He was soaked in a cold sweat, he continued to speak but his voice went in and out, and it was barely a whisper. We never figured out quite what happened. We think Joanie - we think she heard me and came to check on me and there was... a spark... or maybe... maybe the popcorn burned and the aluminum melted... but... His voice trailed off, he was now ghostly white, it took all the energy he had to continue, but he did. I woke up and felt... an indescribable heat. I smelled smoke. I was coughing but it felt like I couldn't get any air to my lungs. I crawled down the hall and managed to open the front door. I got to the sidewalk and... I must've passed out again.

I woke up in an ambulance. They'd put an oxygen mask on me. My dad said afterward that they sedated me. He paused, having no more energy to give. I - I woke up in the hospital and... and they said... He trailed off, there was nothing left to say. He was hoping he'd feel some weight lifted from telling someone but right now, he did not. He took some more deep breaths. He fought with what little strength he had left not to get pulled back in the moment again. He knew it wasn't real but in his own mind, he could feel the heat and smell the smoke from that day. He looked back up at George, hoping he would say something, anything, and not just hate him for the terrible thing he'd done.

Six years older... if he was eight, that would put her at George's age. The Hufflepuff felt a chill run down his back, but he remained stoic. A stiff upper lip. George could not help but picture that girl, though. He pictured his brother. He stopped his mind before he could picture the fire. Like plucking the needle off of a record and replacing it with another. Replaced with a record that did not make any noise, and only listened.

His fingers squeezed the cold wood of the chair in front of him. He pulled at it and tilted it back on its hind legs, struggling to keep himself quiet. The urge to comfort Bubba was silenced, swallowed down as it tried to urge its way out of his mouth. Stupid sympathy. It never did anyone as much good as being sat down and listened to properly.

The look in Bubba's eyes was haunting. George could recognize it. He wasn't down here in the dungeons at Hogwarts anymore. It as all happening again for him, and all George could do was sit helplessly, determined to let him suffer through it until he had finally finished speaking. It was painful. Wizards could turn teapots into weasels, but it seemed that there were never any quick-fix charms for the problems that really nagged him. George's fingers turned pale as he gripped the arch of the chair's back, shutting his eyes in a double-long blink as he held back his tears.

The time to speak had finally come. George began softly.

"I know what they said," he murmured. The rest of the students were in the great hall, feasting on drumsticks and pudding. There was not a soul down here to be hear. If there were any mice lurking in the dungeons, they waited in their holes in quiet reverence for the moment to pass before they dared squeak or even breathe. There were so many sympathies on his mind, but he could hardly summon the words forward. Just a handful spilled out clumsily. "I'm sorry."

He looked down at the boy across from him until he couldn't bear to look any longer, turning his head away to count stones in the wall. Did Bubba feel the same way he had? How could he? None of this had been his fault at all. He wasn't even conscious. There weren't any mistakes to mistake for heroics like Alan had, nor victims, like the poor students stuck down under the floor. Down here in the dungeons. George turned the other way and looked out the door, feeling his hands cold and his heart pounding in his chest.

"Uh, when... when... when my thing happened, I spent a long time thinking about what I should have done," he said. Professor Henry did not seem to be as comfortable sharing his wisdom today as he had in his detention. He turned away, holding on tight to the chair, then turned back, sort of rocking to and fro as if the chair were the only anchor keeping him from sprinting out the door. "And thinking that... maybe if I had done... I don't know, something. Maybe there was a right answer and I missed it."

His own memories came back to him like a camera flash. It was all seared on his brain in familiar patterns. Get Jake. Run down. Someone else is going to fall, but not if I fix it. George's arms tensed, leading him to lean over the chair, pausing for a few deep breaths. He wanted to break the chair over his head if only to have something to distract him from his memories. "I don't think... it's... you can't do that. And if... if it makes you feel any better... I don't see anything you could have done differently. And I can think of a lot of stuff I could have done differently."
