The Hogwarts Express ride home
@adelaide barlowe
For the first day of July, the weather was rather quite miserable; thick grey stormclouds
masked the sun like a thick grey blanket and glassy raindrops were beginning to fall from the sky. Despite the poor weather, the excitement in the Hogwarts express was tangible. From inside her compartment, Maisie could hear the eager chatter from all around. Many students were saying their final goodbyes to friends, sharing final laughs and creating memories before the school year officially ended. Sure, Maisie was glad the school year was over; there would now be no more homework, no more curfew, and most importantly, no more school robes. However, part of her would miss her dormitory and the delicious food served in the Great Hall. She sure would miss that apple pie. She sighed deeply, causing the glass window to fog up. Quickly, she wiped it away with the sleeve of her robes.

“Maisie, did you want some?” Her dreams of apple pie were disrupted by her brother, Dio
loudly setting down the chocolate frog tin on the plush seat next to him.“What? Oh. I’m alright,” He wiped his chocolate covered fingers on his black robes, leaving hazel streaks down the front. “That’s absolutely disgusting,” She frowned, as he rolled his eyes and reached into his dirty robes to grab yet another chocolate frog tin. “I’m going to find somewhere where I can read in peace without your food hopping around everywhere. I’ll see you when the train stops.” Maisie sighed and picked up her book. She could feel her brother rolling his eyes behind her and quickly shut the compartment door before he could open the tin.

She headed towards the back of the train, a place where she knew would not be too busy due to
quite a large number of students dealing with motion sickness. She slid the door to one of the compartments open and smiled. It was empty; a rare sight especially midway through the train ride. Immediately, she lied down on the velvet red seat and opened the book on her face. Between the sound of the rain outside and the quiet compartment, it was the perfect place for a nap.

"Eloise! Hey! Eloise!" Adelaide yelled as she saw her sister walk past her compartment. Of course, the brunette ignored her and continued walking. The Ravenclaw internally cursed her before sliding the door of her empty compartment open to follow her. Adelaide had thankfully found a compartment that was empty, so she figured it was safe leaving her trunk and her cat, Nina, there temporarily whilst she went to find her sister. She caught up to her, grabbing her hand.

The older girl narrowed her eyes, "What do you want? I'm not going to sit with you, if you're on your own,"

"I'm not asking you to sit with me," Adelaide scoffed, "I don't care about that. I'm just telling you to make sure you don't linger around when the train arrives at the station, I don't want to wait hours while you say bye to this friend and that friend, okay?" The past few years Adelaide had went with her parents to pick her sister up from the station, since she obviously wasn't at Hogwarts yet, Eloise always took literal years to say goodbye. This time - since Adelaide technically had a say in the matter since her parents were picking both of them up now - the soon to be second year was not in the mood to wait around today, she just wanted to get home.

Eloise rolled her eyes, "Yeah, whatever," she tugged her arm out of Adelaide's grasp and turned on her heel, heading back to whatever compartment she was going to. Sticking her middle finger up at her sister's retreating back, she too turned to head back to her compartment. Adelaide had definitely changed over the school year, usually she never swore or even stuck her middle finger up at anyone no matter how angry she was, but she had met a lot of frankly annoying and aggravating people this year, so naturally she had just changed to be a... less tolerating person, perhaps.

To her dismay, when she arrived back to her once empty compartment, apparently a trio of students decided to make this their compartment. Despite her trunk and kitten still in there. At least Nina was enjoying the attention and pets from the three students. She swung the compartment door open, "What are you doing in here? Move, this is my compartment,"

One of them shrugged, "Ours now,"

She didn't have the energy to deal with this. Sighing angrily, shooting each student angry glances, she scooped Nina up into her arm and used the other arm to drag her trunk out of the compartment. The blonde decided to move to the end of the train, since it was usually less populated. She spotted one with only one other person in it, a girl she didn't recognize, lying down on the seat and reading a book. It'd have to do. Putting her trunk down temporarily, she opened the compartment door, "Can I sit here? Some twats stole my last compartment." She didn't bother waiting for the girl's response as she set Nina down on the free seat and heaved her trunk in. She set down, stretched out her legs and sighed. People could be really annoying sometimes. Usually a lot of the time.

The sudden arrival of new guests caused Maisie to sit up and set her book aside. She shifted over to make more room for the new girl and her cat, who stretched and lay her tiny body down on the seat. The little paw prints from where she was walking left dark indents on the red velvet. Instinctively, Maisie leaned over and stroked the cats forehead before quickly withdrawing her hand. "I'm so sorry, I should have asked before petting your cat. I’ve spent almost the entire last month at school in my dormitory studying so I don’t forget anything over the summer it seems my manners have left," She smiled, attention shifting to the girl who now sat down besides the cat.

She looked around Maisie’s age, although Maisie didn’t recognize her from any of her classes. If anything, maybe she was a year older. "My name is Maisie, I’m a first year Slytherin. Are you a first year as well? I don’t think I’ve see-"she was interrupted by the compartment door sliding open. The trolley witch stood there, cart full of assorted candies and pastries for purchase. “Anything from the trolley dears?”"Oh, I’ll take one acid pop please," Maisie pulled out a few silver coins and handed them to the trolley witch. In exchange, she received a lollipop the color of a bright green apple. Carefully, she removed the crinkly wrapper. "Apologies, it’s hard to resist a good acid pop. They’re my favorite. I don’t recall seeing you around school, but then again, I haven’t paid much attention to much besides a few in my house. By the way, would you like anything from the trolley? It’ll be my treat.”

Adelaide shook her head, smiling fondly at her cat, "It's fine, she loves attention from anyone, pet her all you want," she couldn't help but laugh at what the girl said, "I think we've all spent a lot of June, and even May, studying, so I can't blame you." Even though Adelaide loved studying and learning, she too had to admit that the amount of studying she done for the end of year exams had left her mentally exhausted, and she couldn't be more grateful that it was summer now. At least she would be able to have a well deserved break and focus more on her ballet and piano, possibly even pick up a new skill if she was in the mood for it.

She hummed, nodding, "I am a first year, and it's nice to meet you Maisie. I'm Adelaide Barlowe and I'm in Ravenclaw." The duo were interrupted by the trolley witch. As Adelaide watched Maisie buy an acid pop, she was about to look through her trunk for some sickles before Maisie offered to pay for her, "Oh? Really? That's really sweet. I'll have a chocolate frog then, if that's alright," she smiled a genuine smile at Maisie, touched by the small gesture from a girl she barely knew, "acid pops are nice too," she said, "but my absolute favorites are chocolate frogs. Some might think they're a bit plain or boring, but I love them. I haven't saw you around school either," Adelaide regarded, "but it is quite a big school, so we probably missed each other."

Honestly, Adelaide's first year had mostly been made up of making enemies, which is slightly concerning. Obviously, she had made friends and had even reconnected with old friends, but when she thought about it, most of the people in Hogwarts seemed to gravely annoy her. Which was probably a given considering they had to basically live with each other for majority of the year.

The rain had begun to slow down it’s tempo from an aggressive dance to a mellow waltz. The sun’s rays peeked through he cloud, filling the train compartment up with light. “Oh wow, it got bright fast. The stick from the pop bobbed in Maisie’s mouth as she talked. She lifted her hand up to block the sun. “Chocolate frogs are delicious, however, I don’t really like the idea of my food scampering around whenever I try to eat it. In fact, that’s how I ended up in a cabin of my own. My brother was making an absolute mess with the frogs he bought in Hogsmeade earlier on this month and so I left the compartment I was sharing with him.

Although Maisie would never admit it out loud, she was a bit of an extreme perfectionist. Her brother would often make fun of her for it, calling her a control freak. She never really minded it, maybe because a part of her deep down knew that it was true. Her mindset was simple, at least to her: in order to be successful it’s important to be tidy, careful, and clean. Subjects like potions and herbology were difficult for Maisie, as she often finds herself focusing on keeping things clean instead of the task at hand.

“Older siblings, am I right?” She shrugged, removing the pop from her mouth revealing a large hole in her tongue, burnt away but the acid. Either way, I’m glad I’m getting to know you. Hopefully, we’ll share some classes with each other this upcoming year. Are you doing anything over the summer, or at least looking forward to doing anything in particular? I know I’m looking forward to catching up on Quidditch and not having to worry about Potions homework.”

"Huh?" She turned her head to look out the window and the rain that had been pelting down earlier was surprisingly starting to clear up, "Oh yeah, it has. Hopefully it stays that way for the rest of the day." While she noticed Maisie putting her hand up to cover her face from the sun, Adelaide didn't much mind the rays shining on her. It was a nice bit of warmth that she savored as she leaned back in her seat, taking a bite of her chocolate frog and checking what card she had got. Albus Dumbledore, a repeat. She wasn't a big collector of the cards or anything so she wasn't that disappointed about getting a repeat, but she did have a pile of them in her room back at home.

She nodded along as Maisie spoke, "Yeah, I get that," Adelaide said, "I usually just try to put it into my mouth really quickly or just hold it tight so it doesn't run away," she let out a chuckle at the mention of Maisie's brother, "that's funny, and understandable. I can see why you'd leave for some peace and quiet."

"Oh, yeah. Older siblings,"
Adelaide let out an exasperated breath at that, leaning her head back to stare up at the ceiling. She knows about older siblings all right, and how they somehow know just how to get under your skin and poke at all of your buttons. The way they annoy you so much and you hate them for it even though deep down you still can't help but admire them and look up to them even though they want absolutely nothing to do with you but you didn't even do anything except be born. She didn't say any of that to Maisie, though. She just settled for, "I have an older sister, too. She is incredibly annoying and we just can't get along at all, no matter how many times our parents try to force us to be civil with each other. It just won't work." Adelaide was secretly envious towards people who had good relationships with their siblings. The world would end before Adelaide and Eloise were ever civil with each other.

"Yeah," she nodded, "hopefully we are in the same classes. And yeah, my friend Ivy is staying over at mine for the first week. She'll be meeting me at King's Cross once the train stops. Then I think I'm going to America with my family in the middle of July to meet my aunt, uncle and cousin who we haven't saw in a while and then obviously there's the summer camp in August. What about you? Any other plans?"
