Milkshakes and Mishaps
It was a relatively warm summer day. With all the excitement of receiving the supply list, Ellie decided to take a trip to Diagon Alley to get prepared. Marcus, Ellie’s twin brother, did not share in the same excitement but knew that he had to go, especially since it was important to his sister. Marcus thought it would be a good idea for them to separate, so that Ellie could have the chance to meet other students (she usually relied on him to do all the talking). Ellie was wearing a mint green summer dress that had a subtle floral design. Due to the heat, she had her crimson curly hair up in a high ponytail.
Ellie’s mom had described Diagon Alley in detail, so Ellie knew what to expect and where to go for what she needed. Naturally she finished her shopping early and found herself beginning to get anxious waiting for her brother. She didn’t want to bother him, so she decided to head over to their meeting place early: Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour. Ellie turned the corner to notice the bright, yellow shop with large windows. Ice-cream sounded delightful in the heat. Ellie waited for a moment before entering, when there weren’t too many students at the door. She didn’t want anyone to see her fumbling with all her supplies to get in.
As she walked in, she noticed that there were small round tables with two to three chairs each. There was a decent amount of students inside and they seemed to all know each other already. Ellie quickly looked over to the menu to distract herself from the crowd. She found it difficult to make a decision on what she wanted, but the line was going fairly quickly and she only had two people left in front of her. It was her turn and she went with the decision that she thought would be the least messy and easiest to handle with all the things she had in her hands: a blueberry milkshake. She quickly stepped to the side after paying to get out of the way. As she waited for her shake, she looked over her supply list again, even though she knew with absolute certainty that she had everything. “Blueberry Milkshake” Her eyes darted up to see the delicious shake topped with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles. It even had fresh fruit on top.
She quickly extended her hand out to grab the drink. Before even taking a sip, she turned to move out of the way again and almost instantly bumped into someone behind her. She was mortified, the moment felt as though it was happening in slow motion; the whip cream, sprinkles and fresh fruit falling over onto the person.
“I…I…I’m so sorry”

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Lillian had decided to head back over to Diagon Alley, figuring she should explore the wizard side of London a little more. Her mother didn't mind, and Lillian had a strange feeling that her mother's presence lingered with her from time to time, but she figured those were just her nerves and nothing more. Spotting an ice cream shop, she grew excited. Did wizard ice cream taste different? Did they have special wizard toppings? She didn't know the answers to those questions, but she was eager to find out.
Hurrying into the shop, she ordered a chocolate milkshake and waited a few steps away from the counter, a little anxiously. Her gaze soon drifted from the counter, but she didn't see anything at all. Instead, once more, her mind was filled with anticipation, nervousness, and dread towards Hogwarts. It was odd how someone could feel all three emotions at the same time, when they were all so vastly different.
The word 'Milkshake' snapped her back to attention, but she was disappointed to see it was a blueberry milkshake for the girl in front of her. The girl stepped up to the counter to grab her milkshake, her arms full with school supplies. Another Hogwarts student! And she seemed like a first year, too! If Lillian was one for conversation, she might've been tempted to introduce herself, but her lack of social skills kept her quiet. As the girl turned around, Lillian had the sudden realization that the girl was about to bump into her. She attempted to sidestep out of the way, but it was too late.
The drink tipped out onto her, the blue staining her deep red shirt and black jeans. Sprinkles, whipped cream, and an assortment of fruits dotted her shirt like final decorations. Lillian heard the girl apologize, but was more focused on saving as much of her clothes as she could. She fished in her pocket for a tissue, before hesitating for a second. Would the wizards around her find it strange that she wasn't going to magic the mess away? Suddenly, she remembered magic was illegal outside of school grounds, and pulled out a wadded up tissue, carefully trying to dab at her clothes. Unfortunately, all she was succeeding in was smudging up the stain more.
With a sigh, she began picking up the toppings by hand and placing them on her tissue. The milkshake wasn't going anywhere, that was for sure. She looked up, annoyed at the girl, but when she finally spoke, her voice was more defeated than anything, accepting that her clothes were now ruined. "I suppose there's no use apologizing after the deed's been done. I can't exactly solve this," she said, indicating her shirt, trying to cover up her saltiness with a dry laugh.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Ellie felt absolutely terrible. This plan to separate from her brother was supposed to help her to make new friends and here she was doing the opposite. She definitely didn’t want to start the school year with enemies. The girl seemed very upset and her outfit was definitely ruined. The anxiousness was overwhelming. Her mind went into hyperdrive. Not only was this a bad first impression, she could feel other students in the shop beginning to notice what happened.
Ellie took a moment to breathe. She couldn’t just walk away without helping and she definitely didn’t want to leave with this being the first impression. She quickly turned around to ask the server if they a had wet cloth, but they were too busy trying to prepare all the orders.
Turning back around, Ellie noticed the girl still trying to salvage her shirt. She handed over a napkin that she had in her pocket. When she reached into her pocket, she remembered that she had a tide pen. Ellie always had to be prepared and sadly accidents like this happened more often than she liked to admit.
With a half smile, she held out her hand with the pen.
“I know we aren’t allowed to use magic, but maybe this can help with your shirt.”

Milkshakes and Mishaps
The girl was at least trying to make things better, so Lillian gave her a small grateful smile. She knew she shouldn't be annoyed; accidents happened. She accepted the tide pen and found that it did have some effect on her shirt. "Thank you. Sorry about that. I was a bit annoyed but no harm done, really. Mistakes happen." She rushed through the statement, a bit nervously, unsure why she was apologizing when she had done nothing wrong.
Lillian was often a bit of a people pleaser, so her apologetic behavior wasn't all that surprising when she was a little anxious. With a sigh, she gave up and handed the pen back to the girl. "I should've been quicker in moving out of the way. Or maybe not have stood here to begin with," she added with a slight laugh. She was about to offer to buy another milkshake for the girl, but then clamped her mouth shut. Nope, not doing that. Wasn't my fault, she told herself although she did feel a little bit guilty and responsible.
It was usually difficult for her to stand up for herself, and she was having a tough time not turning this around and making it her own fault. Somehow, she could always find a way to do that.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Ellie felt a bit of relief that the girl accepted her gesture. The tide pen made the stain on her shirt a little less obvious. Ellie held the cup of her blueberry milkshake in her hand, it was only about half now. Ellie still wanted to finish her drink, to see what her mother always raved about and she wouldn’t dare ask for a replacement for her mistake. Ellie knew that it would be some time before Marcus would be there to meet her. He hated shopping and she knew he wasn’t all that eager to do it quickly.
Ellie noticed that one of the tables opened up. She could sit at the table alone, but the thought of doing that in a full shop seemed pathetic. Normally, this wouldn’t even be something she would worry about or notice because her brother would be with her, but given her little accident and the fact that he wasn’t there, she struggled with keeping herself sorted. She decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to make a friend.
“So…my name is Ellie. I am waiting for my brother. Would you like to share a table while we enjoy our milkshakes?”
Time felt like it was going incredibly slowly as she waited in anticipation for her answer.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Lillian raised an eyebrow at the girl's words, before letting out a laugh. "That has to be one of the weirdest requests ever made. First you drop your drink on me, then you wanna hang out. But, sure, I'll take it." The odd interaction somewhat lifted her spirits and she got her own chocolate milkshake from the counter, before turning around and walking back to the girl, careful not to spill.
"I'm Lillian. I'm not all that familiar with the wizarding world, so I was just exploring Diagon Alley. Don't really have anywhere to be right now." The words slipped out, and she hoped the girl wouldn't judge her for not knowing anything about the magical world. It didn't really seem like she was that kind of person, though.
Beginning to make her way over to a table in the corner, Lillian looked back to check if the girl was following. "So, fellow Hogwarts student? I start my first year in September," she said over her shoulder. "Again, I'm sorry for bumping into you," she said with a sheepish look, deciding that she deserved at least some of the blame. It was her fault for standing so close to the counter, and the girl's fault for turning so quickly and not keeping track of her surroundings.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Ellie went flush from embarrassment. Her attempt at a friendly gesture was perceived to be weird. It took her back for a moment. The girl picked up her milkshake and was making her way to the table.
Should I follow her? Ellie thought as she stood by the counter.
This was a very different experience than the one she had earlier at Flourish and Blotts. She definitely felt uneasy and the only thing keeping her to reality was knowing that her brother should, hopefully, be done with his shopping soon. She was getting far too worried about where this interaction was going and if the other students in the shop were paying attention.
Even though it was her suggestion in the first place, she reluctantly moved forward to follow the girl to the table.
“You shouldn’t apologize, it was my fault.” Ellie tried to say as sincerely as possible. She was very confused by the girl, who now apologized twice for something that wasn’t her fault. Also, because her demeanor gave off the impression she didn’t want to be there.
Either way, Ellie took the opportunity to try and redeem herself. “And yes, I’ll be starting my first year in September too. I was just getting a head start on shopping for my school supplies.” As she took the seat opposite her newest acquaintance.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Lillian decided to let it go. She couldn't do much about her clothes now, and Ellie had tried to make up for it as best she could. "Oh, me too! I just got my books from Flourish and Blotts the other day, and now I'm still staying in London for a while for some last minute things. My mother insisted," Lillian said, her voice fluctuating the same way her emotions did. She had been excited at first, finding out Ellie was another first year, and she wasn't the only one getting her school supplies early, and then had reminded herself of the fact that she was still stuck in London, causing the end of her statement to sound a little salty.
Suddenly realizing that she might've offended Ellie with that, she hastily continued. "No offense if you live here. I'm just not quite used to a large, bustling city like this. There's way too many people here for my taste," she said, shaking her head.
Done with her little mini-rant, she took her first sip of her milkshake and was surprised to find how good it tasted. Wizards probably had their own secrets about making drinks, and she had expected it to taste a bit different, but not better than Muggle milkshakes. Her mother had tried her hardest to convince Lillian that wizards weren't all that bad, and a lot of the things they did were amazing to be part of. Ordinarily, she thought wizards were really cool, but unfortunately, being dragged off to London because of Hogwarts and then being signed up for the summer camp had severely soured her attitude towards the magical world.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
As Ellie sat down, she looked at her half milkshake in her hand. In her head, she tried to justify that she didn’t really like whip cream anyway. Then, thought to herself she was being silly. She took a sip of it and it was everything she hoped it would be, which in turn made her sad she had so little of it. As Lillian opened up, Ellie couldn’t help but to agree.
“No offense taken! I’m actually from Scotland. I’m not a big fan of the city either. Hence my anxiousness in a semi-crowded ice shop.” She let out a little giggle, hoping it wasn’t too soon to make fun of her mishap.
Ellie was beginning to feel more at ease now that she was sitting down and not struggling with all the things she bought. The milkshake was also very refreshing on a hot summer day. After another sip, she felt more comfortable continuing the conversation.
“Will you also be taking part in the upcoming summer camp? My parents strongly encouraged me to sign up to try to meet people before the school year started.” Even though this was true, Ellie was indeed excited to start taking part in magical activities.

Milkshakes and Mishaps
Lillian scowled at the mention of the summer camp, but quickly changed her expression, nodding slowly. "Yep, I'll be joining the summer camp. My parents are making me go. They say make some friends before school starts so I won't be entirely alone. I'd rather stay home, in Queenborough." She decided to tell the truth and not put on a front, as if she liked the idea of camp. Muggle summer camps were the most annoying things, and she was guessing wizard summer camps would be, too. They had magic, but she didn't know how to use it, so she was expecting herself to be more left out than in Muggle summer camps. She didn't mind being alone, but, knowing that was all that awaited her, she wasn't looking forward to it.
"They're holding it in the Quidditch stadium. When I think summer camp, a Quidditch Stadium in the middle of London isn't what comes to mind," she added, shaking her head. She didn't usually talk this much, but she had a lot to say right now. Realizing other people might hear her dislike of Hogwarts, she glanced around furtively. Thankfully, everyone seemed to be engrossed in their own conversations, not paying any attention to the pair of twelve-year-olds.
