Over cast, a cool breeze, the earth itself seemed to sigh with the dreary day blues. For most of the day, Monica had allowed herself to sink into her covers, feeling the embrace of her bed, it seemed to erase any and all frustrations from the week. Her wand lay next to her, on the night stand, mocking her. She had be the unfortunate soul in charms class that was unable to make the ridiculous skeleton move. Not even a twitch!
She turned her back, avoiding looking at her failure head on, but it didn't help, her thoughts were consumed by the lack of ability she had. "Quite the witch I turned out to be."
Shifting her position, she stared up at the ceiling, drowning in contemplation. The way things were she had 2 options, continue to stay wrapped in bed like a sad potato, or she could pull herself together, take her sorry butt outside, and work at the spells.
Both options had its various, weights, in terms of positives and negatives. The fact however, was that Monica wasn't going to get any better sulking in her bed.The only way for improvement, was hard work. And better to do it away from prying eyes.
Lifting herself up, she grasped onto her want, and made her way out to the courtyard.
It was cooler than she had anticipated, but it was too late to turn back now. The bright side to this was that there were not a lot of other people out, so it made finding a secluded spot rather simple.
Monica pulled out a pin that she had from back home, it was a little metal brooch, with a small cat on it, she had boughten it at a pet store, when her very reasonable request to her parents for a kitten were denied.
Placing the brooch on the ground, Monica stood above it, aimed her wand to her target, and ,"Tarantallegra"
Her wand pulsed, with the magic beginning to build, this was it! It was finally.....
Pffs-
The wand sparked and the magic died out.
"Darn it! Why is this impossible!" Unaware that she had totally lost control of her volume, Monica fell down next to her brooch, staring at it, hoping, praying, that her spell worked, and the little cat would start dancing. But nothing. Nothing what so ever happened.

I was talking a walk around Hogwarts, and I spotted my friend Monica, a first year Slytherin, who I had met at the pride decoration. She helped me make an awesome banner covered with rainbows, pride stripes, and most importantly glitter. I also made a few vases of flowers before everyone had to go to back to their dorm rooms.
I began walking over and noticed she was having trouble practicing the Tarantallegra spell. We hadn't learned it yet. I had read about it in a book, but hadn't tried it yet. It looked liked she was really close. She sat on the ground as I stopped behind her.
“Hey Monica, you're really close! Want some help?” I asked her. She agreed, so I helped her up and gave her some pointers on how to hold the wand and we practiced the special motion, and made sure that she said it right. We practiced and practiced. Monica was very determined, and was working very hard. We were at it for so long, the sun began to set. We continued to practice and Monica was losing her confidence very quickly.

"Hey Monica, you're really close! Want some help?" Looking up, and to Monica's surprise, was Cara from the pride decoration day. Standing up, brushing of the ruminants of grass blades from her robe, Monica smiled at a familiar face.
"Cara! Hey, nice to see you again...." Slightly embarrassed having been caught utterly failing at magic, Monica held her head high, but embraces her need for assistance. "Um... yeah, actually I would love the help. For some reason, I can't get this spell to work at all! I don't know if it's my pronunciation, or if I'm hold the wand wrong..." Cara just smiled back, her willingness to jump to Monica's aid was reassuring. Though they had only met one other time, it was clear that there was an immediate connection between the 2 of them, and Monica was more than grateful that if anyone was to have caught her failing at casting, that it was Cara who did.
Monica stood in total attention to the advice given by Cara. It all made perfect sense, and seemed easy in theory, but there was something missing, something that seemed to be blocking Monica's ability to cast the Charm.
Mulling it over, the pronunciation was spot on, and the wand movements were pristine... the only explanation would just be the need for practice. Over and over again, Monica stated the spell and gestured her wand, and again and again, nothing happened....Until
Monica could feel it, the buzz from the wand was growing! At the tip, a small spark, followed by a growing glow of light! Hope flooded Monica's soul, she was getting close!
Looking over to Cara for some reassurance, Monica closed her eyes, and prepared to give it one last go!
"TARANTALLEGRA"
The magic pulsed from her being, traversing through her arm, and gathering at the tip of her wand. Then a flash, and the magic surged out, landing on it's target. However, it still resulted in no such luck. Monica plopped on the ground, giving in to the unsucess of casting.
"I think I am going to call it for today, not sure I have anything left in me." She turned over looking up at Cara, "Have any other plans for the day? I wouldn't mind going on a bit of a walk."

Monica. Was. So. Close. I got more and more exited and was smiling my biggest smile. A small flash happened at the tip of her wand. I felt the warmth from the flash, and smiled even bigger. I thought, This is it! I helped her! But it wasn't. The magic seemed to die as it hit the target and Monica sunk to the ground. She said that she was giving up.
After Monica gave up, I felt a tiny bit of defeat to. Monica suggested they go for a walk and thats what they did. We began to walk around the great lake, Talking.
It reminded me of all the fun times I have had with my best friend Athena. She had been hanging out with other friends, and I hadn't seen her in a while, but we were going to summer camp together, all summer long. I had also been hanging out with new friends, because well, who likes to be alone all the time. I don't at least.
"So... Monica, what have you been up to lately? I mean I just saw you a few days ago but..." I said, trying to make some conversation.

It was so nice to have someone like Cara to help Monica out. Though it was beyond frustrating to not actually complete the spell, but having the moral support of a fellow peer was nice. It had taken more time than Monica had anticipated with making friends, it was hard to find her footing in the world of wizards, witches and magic, but the connection she felt with Cara was instant, like she was an old friend, Monica felt safe around her.
Chatting away while they walked along the shoreline of the great lake, the sky reflecting off the water. There was not a ripple to be had, not a breeze that disturbed the murky depths of the water, it was serial, and peaceful.
"Well other than the fact of not being able to cast that ridiculous charm, I mean, not a whole lot. I have been working hard at getting my grades up, understanding magic, and the function of it. I am really looking forward to summer though, I miss my family dearly. Oh didn't even think of this sooner.... Are you going to summer camp? I am thinking if I want to sign up, and it would be nice if I knew some one else who is also going?"
Continuing on the walk, Monica stopped for a moment, having spotted a perfect plate shaped pebble, she poised it between her fingers, and flicking it across the lake. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6 7, 8 It kept going and going. 14, 15,16,17. Finally it sank to the depths of the ocean.
"Wow, I have never skipped a rock that far before! Want to try?"
Monica quickly scanned around, looking fro another perfect rock for Cara to give it a shot as well.

As we were walking along the shore of the beach, Monica asked me about camp.
“Well… I’m not going to a wizard camp, but I’m going to a muggle camp with some friends. It’s really close to my house and I get to do all the fun summer activities. I kind of wish I was going to the Hogwarts camp though. I luckily have a few free days… but I have a feeling I’m going to be spending those at St. Mungos with my dad.” We continued walking.
Monica picked up a round flat rock, and flicked it across the lake. She asked me If I wanted to try. I scanned the ground looking for the perfect rock. I found one, it was smaller than the on Monica had just use. I bent down to pick it up. I dug in the sandy dirt, trying to pry out the perfect rock. Nope. I thought as I saw the huge bump on the bottom. I found a better rock, that was much smoother, but it had a weird shape. Oh well. I thought as I flicked it across the lake. One, Two, Three, Four. I counted as the rock disappeared. Monica was also skipping rocks and we talked as we skipped.

Tossing rocks along the water, watching them drift farther and farther away, engaging in idle chatter, it was such a peaceful scene. Though it was rather disappointing not successfully casting the spell, the day turned out rather pleasant.
Though it was a let down that Cara wouldn't be at the Hogwarts summer camp, Monica was hoping she would be able to be tent mates with her, but going to a muggle camp still sounded fun. Brought her right back to the summers when she would go away for weeks at a time, no parents, just friends and the joy of outdoor activities, that you wouldn't be able to experience anywhere else. Such as ropes courses, learning to start fires with glasses, and going sailing.
"Well that sounds really fun... Muggle camp? Do you live in the Muggle world? Where abouts? I actually come from Cambridge myself, it would be cool if we lived close together."
Monica picked up another rock, stroking the smooth surface with her thumb, as if searching for a conversation to be inspired by it.
"Well sucks that you'll be gone all summer, but we can always owl each other if ever! And it will be that much more exciting seeing each other next year, and to hear about your summer endeavours."
Monica aimed and released the stone across the lake. It was certain now, Monica had found a very good Friend in Cara.

Monica and I kept skipping rocks along the Great Lake, as we chatted.
“Uhh yeah I live in muggle areas, but across the street is a wizard family, and we hang out sometimes. I live in Manchester, a pretty big city. I don’t exactly know where Cambridge is though…”
I had a feeling Monica was going to the Hogwarts camp, which I wish I was going to.
I had signed up for the muggle camp before I knew about the Hogwarts camp. My mum insisted I do it because I didn’t have a ton of friends.
“There’s a pretty good chance I’ll go to the Hogwarts camp next year though.”
I skipped another rock. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7… I counted in my head.
“I’m sure the muggles probably won’t like the owl, but you could send it to my mum and she knows how to work muggle post so she’s gonna send me mail the muggle way. If you send it to my house she will send it to me. I’ll write the address down.” I pulled out a piece of parchment from my pocket and walked over to my bag of supplies which I had set down by a big rock. I dug out my quill and ink, and scrabbled out my address.
“There.” I said as I handed the scrap of parchment to Monica.
“Well, I should probably get going, I still have to do Defense Against the Dark Arts homework. I’ll see you around!” I said. I waved and went to my dorm room.
I had a bunch of free time today, so that’s why I’m already done (:

Fun to know that some one came from the Muggle world as well, though Manchester was quit far from where Monica's family was. Although in the world of magic, and teleportation, the idea of a distance like that, seemed no different than if they were next door neighbours.
"It is about an hour or so from London, it is a smaller town, but quit a nice place if I do say so. Lots of things to do there, like swimming, and parks, plus my mom's pastry shop is there, best deserts to ever exist!"
It was nice to know that communication over the summer would still be possible with Cara, Monica had to laugh a little, this was the most she felt like an actual witch. "Oh yes, I know of the post systems, that is what I grew up on. Guess I have been here long enough to make owling the common way of communication now." She fiddled with the stone in her hand, it's smooth surface, cool to the touch, bringing much comfort to the lull in conversation as Cara wrote down her address.
"Well, I should probably get going, I still have to do Defense Against the Dark Arts homework. I’ll see you around!"
"Yeah see you! And thanks for the help today, even though I totally botched the spell."
Laughs were had, and with that Cara had left. Monica sat alone at the shore line, staring at herself in the depths of the water. She remained there till the sun set, watching the colours mix and twirl along the water's surface. Sure she was disappointed she didn't get the spell, but no sense casting shame over herself. It seems Cara certainly didn't. So why should Monica.
As the light faded more and more, Monica got up and retreated to her bed for the night.
