Place: Empty Classroom
Date: June 14, 2022
Time: After classes in the afternoon
As the end of the school year drew near, so did tests and final exams. Jack was determined to do his absolute best. Though he made a show of pretending to be lazy and unproductive in class, outside of class was a whole different story. Every week he would spend the weekend prior preparing for each class's next lesson ahead of time so he could slack off during actual class hours and yet still maintain a perfect grade without anyone else knowing. It was the easiest way to avoid academic rivals, he found, as well as kids who used to bully him into doing their work for them just because they thought he was 'smart'.

The tricky part was finding private times and places to practice and study without anyone else around to see him. The Room of Requirement was certainly useful, but there were only so many times one could go there without attracting too much attention to oneself. So, on some days - such as this one - he had to risk using an empty classroom instead.

Books were spread out all across several desks and on the floor, most of them open to particular pages and marked with stickies all over. His tin cauldron bubbled away in one corner as he waited for a potion to heat up, ingredients clumped together in neat little piles around it. At the far end of the room, Jack waved his wand without a word, practicing gestures out of one of his spell books before getting ready to speak the incantation as well. He was particularly confident in the subject of Charms as he had even mastered the spells they were to learn in the coming year.

Since he had been so eager to get a head start on his studies that day, however, Jack had forgotten one very important thing: to lock the door. He'd never needed to lock the door when using the Room of Requirement, after all. It didn't occur to him that the scent of his brewing potion might escape the classroom and attract the attention of someone else. He'd also forgotten that unlike the Room of Requirement, the empty classroom wasn't soundproof and his shouts of spell incantations could carry out into the hall for anyone passing by the room to hear.

Draven's back ached. A week spent curled up over parchment paper tended to do that, to send pains crawling up his hands and a haze over his eyes.

But it was finals. What else was there to do but study, with the quidditch season safely behind them and a bright, unforgiving sun lurking just outside the castle? Down beneath the grounds, in the safety of the Merlin dorm, Draven admired the sun. Shining through the murky green water that sloshed against his windows, sending aquamarine reflections dancing across his floor. It was beautiful, a hypnotic dance that would entrance anyone who dared look at it.

But outside was an entirely different story. It hadn't taken long for the boy's skin to darken, deathly pallor chased away by bronze, only the shadows under his eyes standing as a reminder of how Draven had once looked. The shadows never left. They spread instead, growing more pronounced with each hour Draven spent in the presence of floating candles and quills.

And honestly, he was kind of over it. Which was how he'd ended up roaming the halls rather aimlessly, ignoring the pile of end-of-year assignments gathering on his bed and weighing down his bag. Scrolls could wait for a while. A bit of pacing up and down halls had never hurt anyone after all. Well. Not before today.

For only a little while passed before Draven came upon a classroom. The door had been left open a crack, nearly calling out to all those suicidal enough to go near an unlocked door at Hogwarts. And Draven...well, if he was dead, there would be no Astronomy summative to hand in. Pushing the door open cautiously, Draven stepped inside taking in the monotone desks.

A cauldron was bubbling quietly in the corner of the classroom, low flames licking up its pewter edges, a sharp, biting smell having filled the airless space. Draven held back a cough as he scanned the room, eyes landing on a short boy. A head of red hair and a slender frame, delicate hands and a weirdly musical voice. He shouted spells rather than spoke them, enunciating the syllables as if his very life depended on getting incantations right.

It took Draven a while to notice who the boy actually was, seeing as his back was to him and Mirador didn't spend a lot of time looking at Burnett from behind. Memories of the boy's lips against his surged before his eyes, of the repulsive feeling that had welled up in his chest right after. His fingers ached, wand having slid between them quietly, spruce molding to his skin. But no. The last thing he needed was another detention, let alone one caused by Burnett.

He turned to leave, fingers sliding between the cracked door and pushing it open a smidge. Unfortunately, that was the exact moment Burnett chose to glance in his direction. Draven sighed.

"Periculum!" Jack cried, red sparks shooting from the top of his mayhaw wood wand as he pointed it directly up in the air. "Verdimillious!" he called next, causing green sparks to fountain forth instead. With a thoughtful stance, the young man jotted something down in a nearby notebook a moment later, muttering something to himself about the emphasis on syllables with pronunciation.

He turned then to check the contents of his cauldron, deciding it was probably about time to turn down the heat on it, when a tall figure framed by the doorway caught his attention. Dark eyes immediately met his own and Jack sneered. Wand still in hand, he folded his arms over his chest as he observed the underclassman's own wand held between slender, elegant fingers. Slowly, like a cat stalking its prey, he began to walk toward Draven.

"Well well! If it isn't Mr. Mirador!" he spoke jovially, hazel eyes glittering. "I didn't realize I had an audience. How long have you been watching me?" Though he continued to smile, his last question had an edge to its undertone that suggested he was less than pleased to have caught someone spying on him.

"I knew there was a spark between us, Mirador, but I never would have guessed you would go so far as to stalk me during your idle hours." He stopped when they were inches apart, beaming wryly up at Draven with no evidence that he minded the height disparity between them.
