"I'm sure they're used to it! Mum told me, when I first started elementary back home, that if I didn't know someone's name, I should just call them Sir or Ma'am, because apparently older people really like that. Makes them feel... uh... extinguished, or something?"
Rubbing the back of her neck, she shrugged, "Some of them are right scary, though. I guess you have to be, with the subjects they're trying to teach us. I'm not sure I half understand most of them, but that's why I borrow so much from the library."
Glancing over, her expression softened and she nodded, "Way I see it, if she doesn't write back, she's missing out, because you seem pretty cool, Constantine... and I think if she knew that, she wouldn't be avoiding you." But then, Maisy was also deliriously optimistic, or so she had been told a time or two. She often saw the world from a perspective so few did, and most of the time she was, unfortunately, more naive than right, but it had never driven her to change. She preferred it, really... seeing the good in everyone and everything.
"Oh, no. I have tons. My brother Charlie, he's the oldest. He's almost done school now, and he'll probably work with my dad at the shop, after. Then there's Auggie and Henley, they're twins. And Mary, she's the one in that picture you found, she's just above me. They're all pretty great. And Pringle, of course."

Constantine shuddered - he'd met a few Professors, and it was safe to say they were a lot different than the ones at his old school. Some were kinder than others, however he'd say the majority of them were rather strict. He understood why, in the potentially dangerous classes teachers had the right to be, however said Professors didn't seem all too worried about student safety. "I can manage Herbology fairly well, however History of Magic is an entirely different story." He replied. Compared to the rest of the classes, it was quite boring, and anything that didn't hold his attention wasn't likely to stay in his head.
The Hufflepuff laughed, rather bashfully. "I'm...quite happy that you see me that way." He bubbled. Maisy's optimism was definitely appreciated, and rather refreshing. It was nice to hear kind words from a Slytherin, because you could know they meant it - whilst in Hufflepuff, everyone was just unconditionally nice to each other.
"The shop? Where does your Dad work?" He questioned, curious. Maisy did have a lot more siblings than he'd anticipated, however it wasn't a bad thing. She seemed to genuinely adore her family, he could see it in the way she talked. "Do any of them attend Hogwarts?" Constantine asked.

"Oof... Yes. He is a bit intimidating, isn't he? No one scares me more than Transfiguration. But they all seem so intense... I suppose it's just part of the job. Who knows, maybe some day I'll become a professor and then I can see what it's all like..." Ambition, decidedly, was not a quality that Maisy, even as a Slytherin, was particularly comfortable with, but the idea of teaching magic was almost too good to pass up.
"It's funny though, I really rather liked History of Magic. Maybe because I don't really know anything about the Wizarding World. I just find the history so thrilling..." She had been pouring through it, book after book, and had yet to find anything that wasn't as fascinating as the last thing she studied...
"Of course!" She smiled, when he acknowledged the complement, "You found my picture, and returned it, and it's funny, I don't feel so homesick, now that I've been talking about it. I guess maybe just the thought's enough." And that, really, was a relief, because there was quite a bit of time before she would see anyone from home again.
"Ah. Dad? He's a carpenter. That's a Muggle job, if you haven't heard of it. He fixes things... like cabinets and tables... and builds stuff out of wood. He's really good, and the shop's been around since his great great grandfather." Chuckling, she shook her head at the following question, "I'm the only witch in my family, since my great Gran. There was an uncle, but no one likes to talk about him much. He wasn't very good at magic, and apparently he wasn't very nice..."

"A Professor? What subject would you pick?" Constantine mused. There were lots of interesting subjects at Hogwarts to choose from, so picking one for a career would possibly be quite hard if you didn't have one in mind. Furthermore, the Hufflepuff wasn't cut out to be a Professor - he didn't like being stuck inside near enough all day, and having to put up with troubling students would be too bothersome for him. Then again, it'd be nice to pass down knowledge from one generation to the other, if they were willing to listen.
"I guess it's because it's rather long winded? I'm not really sure, as I do like to read in my spare time. I'm more of a hands-on person when it comes to lessons, though." Constantine explained. When there were so many things to do in classes like Transfiguration and Defence Against the Dark Arts, learning about the History of Magic tended to be put on the back burner.
"It's nothing, really. Anyone could've returned it, it just happened to be me." He smiled. After all, it had landed near the Hufflepuff table, and Maisy was quite fortunate for that. Constantine wasn't sure if the Ravenclaw table was as friendly, and God forbid the photo fall into the hands of an uncaring brute. "I'm glad you're feeling better, homesickness really is the worst."
"I haven't really heard of it, to be honest. We kind of just...fix things with magic. Constantine had never thought about it before, but there were a lot of muggle jobs that were practically nonexistent in the Wizarding world. Luckily, there was a surplus of magical professions, so no one really struggled to find jobs either. "Oh, wow! If only you could use magic outside of Hogwarts, I'd totally annoy my siblings with it!" It'd be no fun annoying Montgomery with magic, as he knew quite a lot more spells than Constantine did.

"Oh, gosh. That's a good question. I'm not really sure, to be honest. As scary as he is, Transfiguration is pretty exciting... being able to turn something into something else! But I really Charms, and I guess I did well on my first lesson, seeing as I got a pretty good grade. I'm not a fan of Potions or Herbology, and I wouldn't want to teach Defense Against Dark Arts... It seems terrifying, having to learn all that. Being around people who are just... horrid."
Shaking her head, she put the question out of her mind for the moment. It was a long ways off, and she didn't need to make any choices, now... "It's definitely long winded. It would probably be a terrible class if you were tired!" Chuckling, she shrugged, "If you ever fall asleep in class, let me know! I've already got half a notebook filled with notes!"
Shaking her head, she waved off his words, "I'm glad it was you, anyway. You seem like a pretty good friend to have, and I don't think we'd have met, otherwise, you know?" She had wondered as well, what might've happened if it hadn't landed near his table, but it didn't do to dwell on that sort of unfortunate line of thinking.
"It's funny how that works! My dad would absolutely flip if he knew all you had to do was wave a wand and it's put a cabinet together! Wild..." Her grin grew as he went on and she nodded, "I could just picture it... Not that I'd ever do it, really. I'd feel terrible, using magic for the wrong reasons. I can't imagine that there are wizards out there who want to take over the world and stuff. It's really kind of scary to think about."

"Transfiguration is interesting, however I'm quite anxious I'll mess it up." He laughed. He hadn't heard of an incident where it had went wrong, yet, though Constantine was certain he'd become this example. "I mean, I don't like the fact we have to learn it for defence purposes, but it makes me feel slightly safer with all this magic around." Even though he grew up in a Wizarding household, he was still frightened by the potential that it could be used for bad purposes.
Constantine hummed appreciatively, "That's true, you don't usually hear of Slytherin and Hufflepuff students becoming friends, or at least from what I've heard." He commented. Constantine then remembered that his siblings had been friends, each from rival houses, so perhaps it wasn't too uncommon. "That's probably an old fashioned thing to say of me, isn't it? There aren't as bad house divides as there were in my brother's time, at least."
Constantine's 'abuse' of magic wasn't particularly serious, all considering that he'd most probably use it to play a few practical jokes on someone. Namely, Monty. Though, he grew slightly more serious at Maisy's next words. "I agree, it's scary that the next Dark Wizard could come from anyone we've seen at Hogwarts - our own year, even." Constantine responded, nodding his head.

"Oh, I'm certain I'll mess it up!" She said with a small laugh, "The first time I tried anything with my wand, it flew clear out of my hand and across the room. It was a disaster. I'm glad it happened in Charms, though. Anywhere else, and I might've been in big trouble." Some of the professors, decidedly, were considerably less patient than others.
"You're right though, defense is important. I learned that watching Auggie's rugby games. You have to be able to protect yourself, or you'll just end up losing." Making a face, she shrugged. It wasn't a subject she was particularly keen to thin about, long term.
"I wouldn't know if it's old fashioned or not, to be honest... but I really do hope so. It seems sad to me that there's such a divide. We're all the same, right? Even if we have different things we're good at, inside, there's the same stuff. But even if it is still true, I'm alright with making a difference. And I'd like to be your friend."
A warm smile formed, but faded as he went on, and biting the edge of her cheek, she nodded, "...Let's just hope for the best... That we don't end up with any of the bad sort in our class."

Constantine nodded along, agreeing with every word Maisy said. It seemed that a lot of their opinions and hobbies were shared, so she would no doubt be easy to get along with. Similarities aside, she also knew a lot that the Hufflepuff didn't know, like about these 'carpenters', and this so called 'Pokemon'. With their combined knowledge, Constantine's being of the Wizarding world, it appeared that they'd both make quite good friends.
"I'd like to be friends, too!" Constantine crowed triumphantly, as if he'd just won his first game of Wizard's Chess all over again. Hm. Wizard's Chess... "Bother!" Constantine cursed, scratching the back of his head. "I'm really sorry, but I've got to run." He explained, "I've heard that someone in my dorm got sent Wizard's Chess, and I'd really like to play it! I was supposed to head there after breakfast, but I forgot." He laughed sheepishly, flashing Maisy a wide grin. "It's all good though, I'm still glad I was able to meet you! I'll catch you later?" He questioned, possibly unsure of himself. With a brisk wave, he'd all but dashed back down the stairs that they'd walked up, narrowly avoiding slipping down them himself in his haste.

Friends. It was a novel concept, and one that she hadn't truthfully given much mind upon first arriving at Hogwarts. Sure, she expected she would get to know other people, but the idea of actually making friends with anyone was one that had come with a great deal of anxiety... She knew her worth, and she had heard from others that she was a good friend, but these were strangers... on so many levels, strangers. And getting to know them had felt like such an overwhelming feat.
Yet here she was, and she could not have been happier. Yvaine and Constantine... Fiona and Cynthian, John Johns, Liz and Khris... All of them. They were all so different, but all so wonderful, and she could think of nothing better than spending the next several months getting to know them.
Maisy laughed at his exuberance, and even more so at his sudden outburst. She, too, had gotten distracted and if she didn't hurry (or managed to get lost, which was all too likely, still) she was bound to be late for her next class. Giving him a wave as he turned to run, she called out after him.
"Have fun! I'll see you around, Constantine!"
