This day was just too much. First the explosion during elixirs lesson (yes it hurts, no I'll be fine and definitely need no hospital wing, thank you), then she lost in the long-awaited chess mini-tourney. She was tired, but headed to the Owlery anyway. It was dark already... Maybe noone will notice her missing a bit late.

It was very quiet, only some delicate rustling was to be heard. Aware, glowing eyes looked at her. She felt the familiar excitement and comfort. Even the awful smell was somehow pleasant and soothing.

Her owl was nowhere to be seen. She went somewhere to prey, the ambitious little thing wouldn't settle with what the school was feeding her. Good for her. Hopefully she'll be back before Angela finishes her letters. She sat on some cleanest step and started to write.

Dear Anastasia,

I'm so glad you're improving with your clarinet practice. I'm great too! This week we've seen a fwooper. It was silenced, of course, but was making some weird sounds anyway. Its plumage is absolutely gorgeous. The professor even let us pick up some of his feathers! I'd send you one, but it seems I already lost it... I hope there'll be some other occasion.

I'm dying to know how are Apricot's children. Because they already hatched, right? Are they as pretty as her? I bet they are. Please give her something delicious from me.

A sudden sound interrupted her. What's this? Was it something outside?

It had been a rough beginning to Miles beginning term at Hogwarts. Being in father's house was both a blessing and a curse it seemed, because it seemed that every which way he went, he was developing into quiet the klutz. The only saving grace was that one subject he had been anxious for was potions and it seemed that was a class that he was off to a decent start in... plus flying lessons would pick up soon enough and hopefully things get better from there. When he left the platform, he did promise his father to send an owl when he got settled in, but life was so busy at the moment that the time never really came.

His messy brown hair was a little shaggier then usual and his clothes were not as organized as they usually would be.Its been a long day, I have to give myself a break. He didn't even notice the short blond hair girl that was in the owlry as well. There was a letter that he has been meaning to write for a little while since the sorting hat was put on his head. As he was getting closer to the owls, he unwrapped his letter to his Aunt once again to make sure he didn't miss anything.

Dear Aunt Felicity

I know that you probably have a lot better things to do than to read an owl from your nephew, but the start of term has already caught my brain in a knot. Ever since the sorting hat decided my house, its been a conflict inside me whether you were right that our families house doesn't necessarily have to be my house. How did you feel comfortable being put into Gryffindor? Were you confident it was the right choice or did you want something else?

Its just been bothering me that is all. Its not that I don't mind my house, its that my parents always told me to face the truth and question it. Your the most different witch or wizard I know so if you could get back to me.

Thank you,
Miles

Miles felt confident that was all that he intended to write at the moment. He felt very distracted since the start of term and being able to talk with someone about his fears really helped. As he went to tie his letter to the owls leg he spooked the owl. He didn't have one personally and Miles only seen how to do this properly once or twice. Hey owl, I am trying here. He was startled when he heard something and looked around.

"Hello, is anyone here?" The unkempt, brown hair boy said with a bit of a squeak.

Oh wow, so there was someone here too, at this hour? How come she didn't notice him? She got up, looking around. There was so dark, and the moon's light that helped her write the letter reached only a few places. But yeah, there he was! Standing there with an owl.

Hello, yeah, I'm here! I'm Angela. I'm from Slytherin. Are you new too?, she said, coming closer. I didn't expect anyone to be here this late.... Before looking at his face, she glanced at the owl, beautiful barn owl that he was trying to tie his letter to. It looked really irritated by his clumsy handling.

Um, do you need some help with this? Maybe you hold him and I tie this to his leg? You know, would be easier with more hands.

But before she could do anything, the owl decided it was fed up with all of this, menacingly snapped its beak and flew away to sit on the highest perch. The boy looked so startled she almost burst into laughter. Oh... you know, some owls are like this. Don't worry, there's a lot of more friendly ones. She looked into his eyes. Is that some important letter?

There was some creaks in the darkness and the owl he was pissing off was having none of it. The owl squawked at me when i heard a voice coming from his right. At first glance with the reflection from the moonlight, the girl looked like a ghost or sprite.A funny expression came over Mile's face, a curiosity overcame him and he almost asked if the girl was a ghost. The girl introduced herself as Angela from Slytherin as she got closer, but the moonlight played well against her features.

Uh, yea hi I'm Miles from Ravenclaw. Ohh I am most definitely new to most things around here. Miles spotted that the closer Angela became the more noticeable what could only be scratch marks. That meant she was already familar with more animals then myself, all he ever had was a black tabby cat named Furball. Yes, I didn't want to bother anyone, so I choose to try to send my letter at night. During the introductions, the irritated owl kept snapping at my fingers to get on with it.

When Angela offered help, Miles was much relieved at the offer. He never had any owls running around the house like it seemed many people had growing up. Miles quickly replied, Yes please, you would be a lifesaver but as he set down the letter and moved to hold onto the owl, it left off for the highest perch. Miles couldn't help to add words to the frustration staring up at the owl. Fine be that way, I didn't see you helping any!

When he turned to Angela next to him, he could tell she was holding back laughter, but honestly it was pretty comical how something easy as tying a letter to an owl could go awry. It is great that there are more friendly owls in here, though given my luck this one will come back to cause some trouble. She mentioned his letter to my aunt and it completely phased through him as to why he came up here in the first place.

This letter Miles pointing at the letter he set on the ledge. Yes you could say that. Its mostly about making sure I got in the right house for the right reasons. The chaos since start of term has really startled me, there is so much pressure to be great you know. He glanced over at Angela and realized that he had been blabbering as he leaned against the ledge by the owls.

What. What. What about you? What brings someone so late to the owlery? He just then blabbed out what he had thought earlier Your not a ghost are you to haunt for the owls are you?. He is usually not this nervous but the place kind of gave off that dark spooky vibe.

This guy was so sweet and funny. Even if he seemed nervous, he still behaved considerate. It was nice to meet him here, to be with him and the owls here in the quiet tower. Angela felt pretty amused and relaxed, until he mentioned his house assignment. Her sunny mood darkened.

But there was no point to discuss this any further. She won't go around complaining about unfair Tiara's treatment. She won't. It's done. And there's a chance Tiara was right - right? Can ancient magic hat really be wrong about something? Surely so far Slytherin felt way better than she expected. She envied Miles anyway. He got to Ravenclaw, isn't this a house for smart people or something? It's good to be around smart people when you're in a SCHOOL, isn't it?

She realized that Miles probably is a smart person. And a fun person. And it would be good to be around him.

But now what to do to cheer up a little? His question gave her an answer.

Yeah, I'm a ghost, boOoOoOo!, she howled, raising her hands up. I seek those who disturb the owls and rip their hearts ouuuut! She started laughing. Ok, chill out... I'm joking!

Over the course of the introductions Miles came to realize the atmosphere of the Owlery that seemed to had alluded him till then. Sure the place smelled like a really unclean playpen, but everything seemed to shift in the moonlight. The fluttering of wings as owls were waking up to the noise and the night, the cast of the moonlight shadows on the perches down to the two students sharing a moment of peace. Peace. That was what had been alluding him since the start of the sorting ceremony, so much rushing around to enjoy the moments that could be had.

Until the moonlight cast just the right amount of light when Angela was doing her spooky ghost voice. AHH, oh would you stop that, its creepy enough as it is in here. He tried to act reproachful to the disturbly, charming girl next to him but all that came out was a hearty laugh. The laugh was probably the first one that he had in days. Miles might not be the smartest person when it came to actually hearing what comes out of his mouth, but even he could tell he hit a nerve when it came to the discussion of my letter.

He hefted himself onto the ledge that Miles was already leaning against and offered a hand up. Well it seems that we both will most likely be in trouble for being out after darkness has set in, might as well enjoy the time. I don't think I have anything important to do at the moment, you know you still haven't answered what has brought you up to the Owlery. Hmm? Miles said this with the realization that he probably would get in trouble if caught, but it simply didn't matter at the moment.

She accepted his reached out hand and got on the ledge. She almost lost her balance, but thanks to his strong grip managed not to fall and safely sit next to him. Thanks, she smiled.

Hm... Why come to owlery?

I'm here to send letters to my family, she pointed at a half-written letter, now rolled up in her pocket. I come here because... uh... my parents have an owlery. I like owls. I feel at home here. She paused for a moment. Gentle moonlight was making the entire place look serene.

When I was little, I sneaked out to visit them at night. One time I even fell asleep there. My parents found me in the morning, leaning against the wall, all covered in feathers and stuff, she admitted merrily. I don't know owls here, but honestly they are all similar. I want to come here from time to time and maybe get to know them better. You know, owls can live very long and make great friends, they're smart and loyal. Some of those here don't have any owner, they are school owls... They don't really need human companionship, but maybe would like some anyway. She spent a short moment of silence deep in thought.

Do you like animals?, she asked, looking back at him.

It was pretty clear that Angela liked it in here and he simply smiled when she almost fell. He knew from personal experience that it doesn't take much to be embarrassed when anything doesn't go as planned. He probably turned a deeper shade of red, but thankfully it was hard to see in the moonlight.

Hearing her talk made him take a longer look at the owlery and soak in the serenity of hearing her words, fluttering of owls, and there soft hoo-ing. She then looks back and asks, " Do you like animals?

At that moment the irritated own turns on his perch and drops a load on Mile's blue button down shirt. Miles looks up and gives it a irritated look that said nice timing. He turns back to Angela and says quiet pointedly,I honestly don't know the answer to your question. I have no problems with animals in general, but it seems they have a problem with me. I haven't really ever grown close to one and obviously being a townie there isn't much room for them at home. We had a tabby cat but that was the extent of my animal knowledge. Miles slows down towards the end and gives a little smirk to her. I have seven years it seems to try to befriend animals and hopefully owls... cause really i don't have many to spare to droppings. Not the popular fashion statement I imagine.

He clasps his hands together against his knees and found his palms strangely cold. You come here for an escape don't you? To find something familiar and clearly have a passion for. Your family must miss you around home and the owelry, right?

Angela was pretty impressed. Not many people tried to be insightful with owl dung on them. Of course she didn't mind getting a bit dirty, but this boy seemed way more neat than this. Point for Ravenclaw.

Hm... Escape, I guess you could say that. It's relaxing, she admitted. And my family... I think they miss me. They send me letters. Family owls visit me when they do, it's really sweet. She smiled thinking about Pepper's enthusiasm when he proudly delivered the last letter. I miss them too... But it's important for me to be in Hogwarts and get education and all. I want to become a good witch. There's so many interesting things going on here. I can't wrap my head around this castle, it's so big and fascinating! Thinking about Hogwarts and her family, Angela automatically added: My sister Elizabeth will join me in two years, I wonder if she also gets to Slytherin... I didn't really expect that. Ah, not this.

Hey. Enough about me, Miles, she said warmly, with a gentle nudge to his shoulder. He was a nice listener, but she didn't want to blabber about herself all night long. Do you like it at Hogwarts? What is your family like? Asking him back was a polite thing to do, but she also was feeling genuinely curious about him.

When it came to the owl dung, he just let it go, Miles was pretty sure in this fiesta of owls that it was only natural to get some on yourself. Though, he thought, it was probably not the best to piss off the owls in the first place. He listened with rapt attention. Angela seemed to get lost in the memories and she seemed rather proud to be here. This wondrous place was amazing, but there is so much that he didn't know.

She got uncomfortable talking about her family and asked, Do you like it at Hogwarts? What is your family like? Those were easy questions but kind of hard to describe them into words. Well, Hogwarts is rather amazing in that we all have a place to learn. We are from all over the islands and we join a place that is both spectacular and rather scary. Everything from the owls, as Miles looks up, to the wands, and to the people we meet are special. That last part he glances more at Angela. All his fellow dorm mates and classmates come from different places and have different experiences.

Miles grasps the letter that he was still holding addressed to his aunt. Well, the simple answer is that I am what I have learned is a half-blood. My father is a wizard and my mother wishes she were a witch but is a muggle instead, he says with a bit of a laugh. My fathers side of the family have been wizards for many generations at going back almost three have all been Ravenclaws. I am the fourth generation and my fathers best friends in school were my uncle Harold which was a fellow Ravenclaw. Also, my Aunt Felicity, which was chosen to be in Gryffindor house. Miles takes a steadying breath as he finishes on his Aunt.

As the moonlight settles down, he can tell that he hasn't lost his audience on taking a stroll through memory lane. My aunt is someone I am rather close to, because she is so different then the other witches and wizards in my family. She was the one that told me to follow my own path and not necessarily my parents. I still got chose to be in Ravenclaw obviously, but its that nagging doubt that I probably could have been in a different house, you know? He muttered something under his breath in confused remembrance from his father, The choices we make are what define us.
