The weather was nicer today than it had been all week: the sun had finally come out of its place of hiding behind the sea of clouds that usually covered the skies over the castle, and it wasn’t raining. It wasn’t hot out by any means, but it wasn’t cold either and that seemed to be all Nia could really ask for in this area. She’d take what she could get.

All in all, it seemed like a good time to explore a little bit more of the school grounds, so she’d taken her backpack, filled it with some of her homework in case she decided to be productive, and a sketchbook, in case she didn’t, and started walking towards the Great Lake.

She hadn’t been down there since the boat ride to the castle on her first day, and it looked completely different in the daylight. Its waters glittered with the reflection of the sunlight, a clear bluish green that would be inviting if it didn’t look so cold. The grass was a bright green that danced with every blow of the wind, and the trees provided some much appreciated shade for those students that were more susceptible to sunburns.

It wasn’t Nia’s case. She’d grown up in the sunlight, spending whole days playing in the beach under the Spanish sun, so she knew she didn’t have to worry. She took a seat on a patch of grass near the water and enjoyed the feeling of the sun on her skin as she took out her homework.

Herbology, she decided. The assignment was just too fitting with the setting not to start there.

“Gillyweed, Lakeplants, & the Extinguishing Spell,
by Antonia James Greenwood Go.
Hufflepuff, First year.”

She started writing her assignment on a piece of parchment, cursing the quills she wasn’t used to yet and made her handwriting look positively unreadable, and using her knees as a table.

Everything was going quite smoothly. The words seemed to come out easily, the breeze was nice, the Lake was quiet, and all she could hear was the soft song of the waves and the birds chirping.

Which is why, knowing her luck, Nia should have realised sooner that something was going to go wrong sooner rather than later.

A strong current of wind shook the field suddenly, attacking Nia with a force she wasn’t prepared for. Her short hair flapped all over her face uncontrollably, getting into her eyes and mouth, and impeding her vision for the few seconds the gust of wind lasted. She felt her clothes getting ruffled, and heard the parchment she had over her knees lashing about.

And when the wind stopped and she opened her eyes, her almost finished assignment was gone.
The wind had blown away the piece of parchment from her knees, only to slap it unceremoniously onto an unsuspecting (and now probably very confused) student’s face.

Nia got to her feet immediately and started running towards the student with an apologetic wince, terribly embarrassed.

“I am so, so sorry! Are you okay?” she exclaimed loudly as she got closer to her assignment's victim.

It was Friday afternoon.

Late afternoon. Directly after classes had let out for the week, that is.

Kim was looking forward to spending some time alone for once. Lately, he'd been bombarded by his friends and although he cared for them, sometimes he wanted to have some time for himself. This was why he'd gone outside after classes, with his satchel strap over one shoulder, and headed for the Great Lake. It was a great area to do some sketching and spend some time in the fresh air. Kim walked at a leisurely pace as he looked for some inspiration.

He found it a few seconds later, deciding to sketch the unique waters of the Great Lake from the ground's vantage point. Last time he'd done it from above on top of a small hill. This time he'd do it down below. Kim settled himself onto the ground, facing the lake and placed his satchel beside him. He got out his sketchbook and a quill with an inkwell. And began to sketch his drawing. The tall, blue-eyed, pink haired boy was great when it came to drawing.

But then, he'd been doing it all his life.

Those who saw his works thought he was a professional, although Kim didn't think so.

To him they were just doodles he did when he was bored and wanted to kill some time. He sketched out a brief skeleton of the landscape around the area and then the Great Lake itself. And then, began to fill in details. It was around this time that a gust of wind blew something directly into his face. Kim blinked as his vision was obscured by whiteness. He reached up and took it off his face and looked down at it. The parchment looked like some homework.

Herbology to be exact it seemed and Kim looked up when its owner arrived to claim their homework. The girl apologized and asked if he was alright and the pink haired boy nodded. "Mm. You should keep a better hold of things that are important to you." Kim told her as he handed her parchment back. "It's Herbology, right? What do you think of it?" He asked, curious. It was one of his favorite classes because of the plants and herbs.

Plants were used in everything.

Herbs, well he'd always loved them. Lavender was his absolute favorite of all time.

But rosemary and sage were nice too when lavender wasn't available. "Kim. You are?" Kim asked, waiting for her to introduce herself to him.

When the boy removed the piece of parchment from his face, Nia saw with surprise that his hair was a soft shade of pink that reminded her of cotton candy. She wondered for a second if he had dyed it, or if it was somehow his natural colour. She had met a metamorphmagus before, so she wouldn’t want to assume.

Whatever the answer may be, she had to recognize that the colour suited him well. His pale complexion and blue eyes seemed to complement the shade perfectly, and it made him glow. Nia had always toyed with the idea of dying her own hair, but in the end she didn’t think any colours would suit her better than her natural brown.

“I think the things that are important to me don’t think as highly of me as I do of them.” She joked, rolling her eyes to herself and accepting back her homework from the boy’s hand, very glad to find that the ink hadn’t smudged. “I swear, they just run away from me!”

The boy asked her about Herbology, and she pondered the question for a second before answering with a smile and a nod.

“Yup. It’s honestly quite nice”, she said with a smile, sitting down on the floor a few feet away from him so as to not bother him too much. “It’s the perfect mix of a theoretical and practical class, in my opinion, and most of the plants I had never seen before in my life! I wonder if they’d let me take some Moly for my garden back home, it’s so pretty.”

Her house’s garden obviously didn’t have any plants with magical properties, but her nanay1, her sister and herself had managed to grow quite the colourful collection of flowers, from roses (her nanay’s favourites) to tulips (her own) and everything in between. Introducing some magical plants shouldn’t be too hard, right?

When the boy introduced himself as Kim, Nia thought the name suited him.

“I’m Nia. Nice to meet you. Sorry it was under these circumstances, though”, she smirked, still a bit embarrassed. She noticed the sketchbook on Kim’s hands, and it piqued her curiosity. “Oh, were you drawing?”

The girl's response was rather amusing to him.

She obviously had a flair for jokes, which made him see her in a positive light.

Kim watched as she took a seat nearby but not extremely close to him, which was very nice. Most people wouldn't tend to do so. He liked her even more now. The girl went on to speak about a specific type of plant and mentioned something about wanting to take some for her garden back home. "Mm. You'd have to ask Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby about that, as they're in charge of the plants." Kim told her. It was definitely possible.

But not without permission. If she got permission from both, it would 100% be possible. Kim inclined his head when Nia introduced herself to him. "I think you're the first Nia I've come across." He remarked, knowing his own name was very popular in Asia. In fact, as a surname, he actually thought it was one of the most popular in Korea. It was around this time that the girl drew Kim's attention back down to the open sketchbook on his lap. "Ah, yes..."

He picked it up and offered it to her.

"Just some sketches. Landscape." Kim said with a shrug of his shoulders.

Nia would see a rough sketch of the Great Lake, the trees and the surrounding backgrounds. They wouldn't be completely filled in but the outline was very well done.

“Piece of cake!” Nia exclaimed when Kim mentioned the Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures professors. They both seemed to be the type of laidback teachers that would be glad to help you with anything as long as you showed some interest in their subjects. “They’re both really cool. I’m sure they’d be okay with me taking a cutting or three.” Nia was used to getting her way most of the time, and that meant she was also used to having to convince adults to… collaborate with her. Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby seemed to be at level 2 difficulty at most. “Do you garden?”

Kim surprised her by commenting on her name. It had been a while since anyone had brought up the subject. It had been a common discussion when she lived in Spain, where people were more prone to blurting out whatever came to their minds without much filter, but few people had asked about it ever since she moved to England.
“It’s actually short for Antonia, if you can believe it”, she explained with a grimace of disgust. She had never liked her name. “And my second name? James! Sometimes I wonder if my parents hated me when I was born”, she joked. Her nanay would try and convince her that Antonia was actually a lovely name and that it meant things like priceless and beautiful, but Nia just couldn’t get behind it. “I tried to make my friends call me A.J for a while in primary school, but my parents made me cut it out, they loathed it”, she laughed, remembering the argument they’d had about it. It seemed silly now, but at the time she’d been so mad, she'd gone into her room to sulk for hours and refused to talk to her parents during dinner. “It’s okay, though, I think Nia suits me better anyway.”

When Kim offered his sketchbook, Nia stretched across the patch of grass between them to take a closer look. The cream colored pages were decorated with fast and confident ink lines that curved and intersected to form the shape of the Great Lake with uncanny likeness. Nia could tell the sketch wasn’t finished, but she could recognize the shape of the hills and the curve of the shore with no problem, and the dynamic lines made it feel alive and full of emotion. She could almost imagine the Giant Squid’s tentacles breaking the surface of the drawing’s waters.

“Blimey, those are brilliant!” She exclaimed, impressed. She took her eyes off the page to look at Kim with a smile. “You’re really good. Have you ever studied arts, or are you just blessed with natural talent?”

Nia's question made his lips twitch.

"Not really but I'm into plants and herbs in general." Kim told her with a little nod.

"Herbology is actually my favorite class. Charms is my second favorite." He said and let his blue eyes flicker over her for a moment. "You said you have a garden at home. What kind?" Back home, was she from a muggle family? He'd met so many muggles at Hogwarts so far, much more than he'd originally expected to find at the castle. By now he'd started to wonder if the majority of new students were all muggles. Hopefully, not.

Because his parents would most likely hear about this. It would be easier to hide his relationship with them if there were halfbloods, wizard-borns and purebloods too. But then again, his parents hated halfboods too. Kim's mother was more of a halfblood hater and his father was more of a muggle hater. Although, both of them didn't like either one. Wizard-borns were acceptable because they couldn't control their family's history line. Such a shame.

But purebloods were the top of the food chain.

They were also the type that his family recommended interacting with over anyone else.

Kim raised a brow when Nia informed him that it was short for her full name. "I see. Well, Antonia sounds pretty too. For some reason the name reminds me of Amortentia." He said with a faint smirk. The girl spoke about her second name being James. She seemed to find it distasteful, just like his own situation. Kim's second name, or rather his surname, was Sato. And Kim didn't like anyone using it either, for various reasons.

"I don't like anyone using my second name either. So I understand your feelings." He told her with a nod and listened as Nia went on to chatter about her past to him. It was nice to listen and not say much at all in response and he nodded when she said she thought Nia suited her better. Kim liked either one, Antonia or Nia. But he wasn't too keen on AJ. That one didn't seem to fit her at all, even though he barely knew her right now.

As Nia took his sketchbook, Kim moved a little closer.

Not too close but enough so that they wouldn't need to stretch too far between them.

Kim raised a brow at Nia's comment about his sketches. "It's alright, I suppose. But it's not really that good, at least I don't think so." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. "It's also not complete yet, so it might not be too good at the moment." When Nia asked if he had studied arts, he shook his head. "Nah, I did a ton of stuff as a kid but art wasn't one of them. I just randomly doodle from time to time." Kim told Antonia.

"So how come you're doing homework out here?" Kim asked, curious. "You just want some fresh air?" That was understandable. He tended to do so all the time too.

“Herbology is up there for me too, but Charms just takes the cake: Professor Fresnel is an absolute sweetheart, and getting to learn spells really makes me feel like a witch. Like, an actual, real life witch. she commented in agreement to Kim’s ranking of classes, realising with a few seconds of delay just how stupid what she had said sounded. “Which technically I am, I guess, but how crazy is that?”

She laughed to herself. She just wasn’t used to the idea of magic yet! Kim’s questions felt natural and easy, and it was just spontaneous for her to go back to her “muggle mentality” whenever she had these types of interactions. That was especially true when he asked about her garden, as she loved to talk about her home and family.

“It’s just a random flower garden. We just plant everything we like, so we have a bit of everything. My favourites are the orange tulips, though.” She admitted, and noticed that she was rambling as usual. She didn’t stop herself, though. “You have a favourite flower?”

She guessed he would, if he had an affinity to plants. Maybe it wouldn't be a flower, but a herb or a root. Maybe a vegetable?

She looked around the fields in search of any flowers that caught her eyes. Apart from some wildflowers that grew randomly in a pretty consistent fashion, she couldn't spot many major flowers.

As Kim smirked and gave his opinions on her name, Nia put her hands over her heart with a smile.
“That is actually a lovely way to see it! I’d never thought about it like that.” She couldn’t say she had suddenly started loving her name, but Kim’s comment had definitely made a positive impact on her way of viewing it. “Why don’t you like your second name?” She asked, before realising just how intrusive that question could be for someone you’d just met. “Wait, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to”, she backpedalled, before smiling and raising an eyebrow in his direction “but I am kinda curious now, not gonna lie. You shouldn’t have told me.”

She hoped Kim’s reason for not liking his name wasn’t too terrible. She enjoyed drama and gossip like no other, but she’d never want to make people uncomfortable. Especially not now that Kim seemed to approach her a little bit, sitting a tad closer to see his own sketchbook. That was a sign he didn’t find her too annoying, and was maybe even enjoying the conversation.

Although, now that she thought about it, maybe that type of reading of body language was more accurate to cats than it was to humans.

“I think these are pretty darn good for “random doodles”, darling, you shouldn’t undersell yourself!” she said, rocking on her side so that her shoulder gently pushed his in a reassuring gesture. She slapped the pages of the sketchbook with the back of her hand with confidence, as she had seen car dealers do with the cars they were trying to sell, and looked at Kim with a completely straight face before saying: “I’d charge people for seeing these, you know. A galleon or two, even.”

And it was only partly a joke, as she really, genuinely thought the sketches were good. For someone his age? Pretty exceptional, no matter how modest Kim seemed to be about them.

“Ah, just looking to catch some rays” she sighed at his question, looking up at the sky with her eyes closed. She opened one of them to look at Kim when she noticed it wasn’t even bright enough to justify having them closed. “Don’t get much sun here, do we? I think I’m past looking pale, I’m feeling pale too!”, she complained, missing her tan complexion. Usually, she'd go back to Gran Canaria for a month or so during summer, to see her family there, but this year it seemed unlikely, so she was already grieving the loss. “What about you? I hope you weren’t looking for some peace and quiet, because I think I might have ruined that for you.”

Kim listened as Nia spoke.

She gushed about the Charms professor and Kim couldn't help but agree with her.

After all, what kind of professor gave their students pieces of cake in class? That alone had made Kim love her, as he was considered to be the Prince of Sweets. Nia's words about this made him come to the conclusion that the girl was a muggle. After all, if she'd been a pureblood, why would she have spoken about feeling like a real life witch? Magic was a natural occurrence for them. He supposed she could be a half-blood but that was pushing it.

He was going to go with muggle. Unless she stated otherwise. But from the things she was saying, Kim was almost positive she wasn't one of them. At least not until now.

The pink haired boy nodded as Nia went on to talk about her flower garden. When she asked what his favorite flower was, Kim's lips twitched. "I like purple ones." He told her and a faint smile came to his lips. "Lavender is my favorite. I also love vanilla. It's the fruit from an orchid plant, did you know that?" He asked, giving Nia a bit of trivia there. "Sage, rosemary, mint and thyme are also herbs I like." Kim said with a bit of a nod.

"Most are more herbs than flowers but yeah." As Nia thought about his words regarding her full name, Kim's lips twitched again. It was almost as if he was trying not to smile. But in reality, he didn't realize he was doing anything with his lips. And then, she asked for the reason as to why he didn't like his second name. "Eh, I've been burned back in the past. So I don't like anyone knowing about it now." The pink haired boy said.

There.

He'd given her a reason, without actually telling her the reason. It was good enough.

Kim smirked at her words about how he shouldn't have told her about it if he didn't want her to know. True. He hadn't really been thinking at the time. When his mind was on sketching, sometimes he didn't quite think things through. It was why he tended to sketch alone, to avoid saying things he normally wouldn't have. Kim's pocket moved suddenly and he looked down at it. He'd brought Puffie with him this time. But he had hidden him inside his pocket.

To avoid any potential crowds that might want to gather around him and gush about how adorable and cute he was. Puffie, not Kim. Keeping him inside his pocket was the best choice and Puffie was very well behaved when it came to travel. Not so much when he saw people. It was one of the reasons why Kim didn't want to take him everywhere with him. The moment Puffie saw people, he'd roll over to them and bug them. Puffie was worse than a little toddler.

At least with a toddler, you could see them easily.

But with Puffie, he was so small it was hard to tell where he was if he was rolling around.

It did help that the ball of fluff was pink colored though, it made him stand out a bit more. So far, only a select few had seen Kim with Puffie and they weren't people he was familiar with. Therefore, they didn't feel right coming over and bothering him with Puffie, which was relieving for him. But he knew that eventually he'd need to introduce his new pet to his friends. Or they might wonder if he had a reason for not doing so. But he also didn't want to.

Why was that? Kim wasn't sure why he felt that way about Puffie. He didn't want to see Puffie cuddle up to others. Maybe he just wanted to keep him to himself. The pink haired boy shook his head and banished his thoughts. His pocket moved again and a faint squeak could be heard from within. A sigh escaped Kim's lips. Puffie might be well behaved during travel time but that all went out the window once he knew they'd reached their destination. Like now.

The reason he'd brought him was simple.

Kim had wanted to spend some time outside with him and had thought he'd be alone.

But he'd ended up meeting a new girl. However, Nia didn't seem like the type who would get all excited over Puffie, so maybe it was alright to let him out for a time. Kim knew Puffie would come back when he called for him. And no one he knew seemed to be around right now. It was the perfect time to release him for a bit. Kim looked over at Nia as she spoke about how his drawings were pretty good and raised a brow at the girl. "Really?" Seriously?

She thought an incomplete drawing like this was worth money? As Nia spoke further about this and said he should charge a galleon or two for those who wanted to see them, Kim smirked. "I see. Well then, would you care to give me that money for these drawings?" He asked with an arched brow and waited for her response. Puffie squeaked from inside his pocket and a tuft of pink hair could now be seen near the top of Kim's pocket.

The Satos are a very powerful and well connected family and are very high up in the inner circle of purebloods. Purebloods all want to make connections with them. Halfbloods seek out their favor to gain better status.

Even some muggles who are aware of the workings of purebloods try to make a connection to get into a better position in the wizarding world. This is why he keeps his last name secret most of the time, to protect himself.
