Use The Pointy End
Not only had I been summoned from the arduous nothing that I had been doing down in the dungeons, but I had also been asked to oversee a bunch of first years as they went about their first wave of duel practices. It was a strong possibility that I was underestimating them, but as I entered with enough time to catch the last few moments of the duel between the Gryffindor Prefect and her Ravenclaw counterpart, all doubt fled my mind. This would be a practice in patience rather than spells, but one that I would undertake with as much aplomb as I did everything else in life.
After the duel had ended and the Professors were free to choose those students they wished to entertain, I walked forward and cast a feline-sharp gaze into the crowd. "You." [Alexander Varellion] Another quick glance. "You two." [Amadea Campbell] [Gabriel Mattix] That made three so far, which meant I had an equal amount left to choose. None of them looked even remotely capable, but I would be remiss in revealing my thoughts, so I continued among the crowd and spotted the last three [Blaze Flyte] [Aurianna Aspen] [Jake Grimstone], ushering them over with a gesture. The moment all the little monsters were gathered in one place I lead them away from the crowd and to a designated section in the large room where we could commence.
Delicately brushing a few stray strands of hair from my face, I gave them a second to gather themselves, a literal second mind you, before I dove right into the meat of the matter. "As you can see, this is the Duelling Club, and this is to be the stage where you practice casting spells that you know with the intention of causing harm to your opponent." A flourish of my hand would bring their attention to the platform. There was no need for further pomp on the matter. I signalled to them in pairs and directed them where to stand. [Alexander Varellion] and [Amadea Campbell]. "These will be the pairs that face off against each other in the first round. Good luck. And remember; use the pointy end. Take to the platform."
As soon as they did so I waited quietly for them to observe the formal etiquette when entering an official duel, which included bowing and the general show of respect to the contender. As soon as this was done I gave them a short while longer to steel their nerves for what was to come next. Without further hesitation, I said simply "begin."

I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but I was wondering if it is allowed to used the Curse of the Bogies in duelling? In the rules it says it is an acceptable spell to use, however in the DADA homework it says not to use it outside of class, so I was wondering if we are allowed to use it or not.Β
Amadea tentatively stepped forward as her name was called by the new professor of potions. She glanced around at the other students called her in group, hoping to find a friendly face, but to no avail. Everyone was a stranger, which scared her more than it should. Meeting on the terms of a duel probably wasn't the best way to make any long lasting relationships, she thought. Then again, she wasn't here to make friends. She was here to better her dueling skills to learn how to properly defend herself and better her skills as a witch in the process.Β
She watched as Professor Valtome swept his arm across the stage of the dueling stage, somehow making it seem much more grand that it actually was. Soon enough, she had been paired off with a Slytherin whom she did not know. She edged herself closer to her partner, sizing him up. He looked like any other normal student to Amadea.Β
She stepped up onto the platform, mind racing through the very short list of spells she knew. She always paid attention during class, but retaining information and performing spells correctly required a much different skillset that she wasn't sure she possessed. Amadea wondered how seriously this duel was going to be taken. She had never dueled before and she really didn't want to die anytime soon. She was sure no one was going to die today, but standing up on the platform facing the other Hufflepuff made it seem otherwise. Despite her competitive spirit, her Hufflepuff loyalty was fighting against it, telling her not to hurt anyone. But she couldn't show any weakness or sympathy. This is a duel, she reminded herself.Β
She ran through the routine bowing and saluting before readying herself. She looked down at her wand, slim and sleek in her hand. Taking the professor's advice, she made sure the pointy part was pointing away from her. She wished he had given them a little more advice or instruction, but he hadn't and Amadea was going to have to learn as she went. She had no strategy except to just go for it, so that's what she did. Maybe she would catch her opponent off guard if she started out forcefully. She whipped up her wand and exclaimed, "Periculum!"Β

Alexander felt excitement bubble up as he was called up onto the stage. To go and battle another student, Amadea Campbell. He had not met him before so he assumed that this so called Amadea was probaply from one of the other hourses.
As he made his way forwards Alex began to sum up all the spells he knew. It was not much and the spell he could have really used now had not been taught by the teacher yet so he could not use it. He would need some other kind of defensie spell to use to distract his opponent. Β He could use either Incendio or Periculum for this. Periculum was a nice spell if it hit but it would need to hit perfectly, indendio in contrast was able to be used with greater leniency though it wuld prove a greater threat for himself if he made a mistake.
Still incendio seemed like the better option of the two so he decided to use it. Still he would use a defensive tactic for now, to dodge his opponent's shot before capitalising on any mistakes he had made and hopefully have distracted his opponent for a time.
When he arrived on the platform he bowed to his opponents before walking a few paces backwards. Before he cast his spell Alexander wipped out his wand from his wrist holder and would cast "Incendio"

It had begun. Amadea seemed particularly gung-ho, stepping aggressively up to the plate and casting periculum in a manner as such that I had never seen before. Her attempt caused me to open my eyes a bit wider as I watched the red spark shoot forth from the wand on its way to Alexander, but the boy had come prepared for anything, quickly assuming a defensive stance as he fired flames of his own, one of far more deadly force than hers.
The flame and the spark passed each other midflight on their way to opposite ends of the platform, but something seemed quite off about the girl's spell. The sparks seemed to have a mind of their own as the ball swerved to the side just enough that it passed harmlessly by the boy, only to burst loudly into much smaller sparks, leaving him unharmed but startled by the explosion not far behind. Meanwhile, the boy's aim was true. The fire caught Amadea's outstretched wand hand and spread for a quick second as it burned her with enough intensity so as to cause her to drop her wand. "Pick it up and continue." I remained passive, watching and waiting for them to keep going. The duel was not over yet.

Amadea watched as the colors of both of their spells flew through the air. Unfortunately, her aim had been a bit off and her spell only startled the other boy. Even more unfortunately, his flames had deadly aim, landing on Amadea's hand. She bit back to urge to shriek and dropped her wand. Once the shock had worn away, Amadea brushed herself off, picking up her wand again. She ignored the flashes of memories that seared her brain. Burning was something she never wanted to experience again. Her opponent had been very forthcoming in his spell. Amadea decided she needed to change it up a bit.Β
She ran through the still small list of spells she had learned that she hadn't used yet. There was Incendio, the spell Alexander had used on her. Even though she felt confident in the spell, she couldn't bring herself to use it after her experiences of being on fire. She was still scarred, both physically and mentally, from the experience and couldn't bring herself to set someone else on fire. That left only one other spell that she could use, the Curse of the Bogies.Β
She repositioned herself on the stage, pointing her wand toward the boy before carefully and slowly saying, "MucusΒ ad Nauseam!" She waved her wand in the teardrop shape kind of motion and hoped for the best.Β

Alex had a concentrated look on his face as his phoenix feather wand send a wave of fire at his opponent. He was met with the satisfaction of seeing it hit his opponent but he frowned when it was immediately extinguished and when his opponent seemed to have an intense reaction to the burn she had gotten. Alexander tried to analyze her briefly and saw what looked a bit like shock and fear.
So concentrated was he on his observations that he almost missed the sigh of the periculum coming at him only for it to luckily swerve away from him. But he was startled when the spell exploded behind him creating quite a bit of noise. Alex looked behind him briefly to see if there had been no physical reaction which seemed there wasn't any. But when he looked back he was alarmed when he saw his opponent start to cast the curse of the boogeys. He most assuredly did not want to get hit by that and find out what it was so he took the best defensive stance that he could.Β
Then he thought of how he could further defend himself, maybe, just maybe. A thought suddenly entered Alexander's head. What if he could levitate Amadea's wand. Or if he did not hit it precisely just her hand. Off balance her and throw of her aim
Alexander then did the tradition flick and swidsh and incanctated. "Wingardium Leviosa" Whilst doing the traditional flick and swish

Another round of spells and attempts saw the two trying new things to incapacitate the other, and it seemed the girl's earlier periculum cast, though it had been a miss, saw some useful results after the fact. The boy, having been startled by the sound the explosive spell made behind him, had lost focus and turned to look back as if ascertaining whether the spell had actually done something or not. The girl had wasted no time casting the curse of the bogies at the boy while he, quite late, attempted to cast the levitation charm as a counter.
What he was planning seemed obvious, which was to interrupt her cast enough while either disarming her or taking hold of her clothes to magically move her. He failed, however, the curse of the bogies having hit him mere moments before he could cast his own spell, dampening his concentration and nullifying whatever effects he might have hoped for. Meanwhile, the boy would find himself afflicted by one of the worst head colds ever, marked with sneezing, a sudden headache, and the signature runny nose that was the spell's main effect. The onrush of snot would be so persistent that one of two options were available to him. He could either apply his efforts into casting the counter-curse, assuming he even knew it, or he could try to fight his way through the cold and cast one last spell in an attempt to defeat the girl before her spell defeated him.
Whatever he decided, the next turn was his last if the curse lasted without treatment, and the girl was free to do as she pleased seeing as the boy had failed to properly cast his own spell. This was quick thinking on her part, and I found myself rather impressed by her use of the spell. In all honesty, I thought the boy would have emerged as the victor since he had burned her before and had had the upper hand. There was another round to decide, and anything was possible.

Amadea did a silent victory dance inside of her head. Her spell had worked! And, as a bonus, she got to see the effects of the Curse of the Bogies live and up close instead of just reading about it in class. She fought the urge to smile as she watched her opponent's nose begin dripping snot...and more snot. To be honest, it was actually a bit disgusting.Β
Amadea reeled in her thoughts. The duel wasn't over yet and she needed to stay focused. Even though her spell had worked, she still had lost the first round. Either of them could win. She wondered what spell to use next. Despite her reservations about casting the fire charm, she decided there was no other spell that she felt confident enough to use. It was a powerful spell that had knocked the wind out of her. Even though she had reservations about making someone literally be on fire, she was willing to sacrifice her feelings to win the duel.Β
In all honesty, she did feel a little bad for Alexander. He hadn't even known what was about to hit him. And from what Amadea could remember, those splitting headaches weren't something anyone would envy. But this was a duel, and she had to do what she had to do to win.Β
She cleared her mind, concentrating on the spell as she waved her wand and spoke. "Incendio!"Β

When he was distracted Alexander got hit by the spell and immediately got a splitting headache that was just terrible. He also got a runny nose and all in all he felt terrible. Alexander knew he had a choice to make. To cast the counter curse or to attack in one desperate attempt. Fortunately or unfortunately you could say Alex had not had much practice with the counter spell and he doubted whether or not it would be effective thus he was left with only one choice. To attack
Alexander then focused as much as he could on hitting miss Campbell. He needed to hit her at all costs or he would lose the duel. If he was very lucky he could still win and if he was a bit lucky this would end in a draw. Regardless he would need to hit her first so he focused purely on offensive and not a bit on defense. As such he used the wand movement necessary for such a spell. Making a movement looking like a flame with his wand. Making sure the angles were as accurate as possible as he tried to make it as perfect as possible from his lessons.
Furthermore he said the words needed in the spell. Regardless of his physical state and said with as much intent and determination as he could gather. Hoping that it would aid him in defeating his opponent. "Incendio !"

It had all boiled down to this final moment. Both contenders decided that they would fight with no holds barred; fire with fire. Literally. No more casts of the levitation charm or the curse of bogies in a play of finesse. This time they decided they would end it with one of the most aggressive spells in any first year's arsenal. Both their spells proved successful but in different ways. Amadea's was more paced, her relaxed yet assertive cast of the spell conjuring the flames with more control than I could ever imagine a first year would be capable of. The fire did not travel from the tip of her wand through the air, but rather engulfed her enemy quickly where he stood, washing him in a blaze of red and orange before it died away, surely leaving him with a few burn marks here and there. Nothing truly caught fire though, so there were no remnant sparks to douse.
His spell, on the other hand, was more frantic. He had thrown caution to the wind, no doubt as a result of his prior affliction of the curse of bogies. Whether he found it hard to focus or not was not the issue. He was tightly wound and wanted to try his luck in ending this before the curse took its full hold. The fire had quickly shot from his wand just as Amadea's had swallowed him, and his retaliative flame met her wand hand for the second time, scorching it all the way to the wrist. She would no doubt drop her wand again, and the pain this time would be unbearable, erasing any thought she might have of continuing. This was not something she would have to worry about, however, for a glance in her opponent's direction would find the boy collapsed on the ground, no doubt having lost consciousness from both her conjured flames and her curse.
"That's enough." I rushed to the platform and cast my attention first to Mr. Varellion, my wand in hand and silently casting the counterspell to the curse of bogies. I would do the best I could for the time being, but he would be just fine. All he would require was a visit to the infirmary and a good night's sleep. He would regain consciousness momentarily. As for Ms. Campbell, I waved my wand again and conjured one of the many jars of burn-healing pastes that I had in my storeroom. "Let me see." I quickly applied the paste to the injured areas as gingerly as I could. "Please accompany Mr. Varellion to the Hospital Wing. You will both be just fine." With that I got to my feet and started walking away, but stopped and turned back to the girl with a smile. "And congratulations, Ms. Campbell. Truly superb spellcasting."

Β§ Amadea's conjuration of flames engulfs Alexander in a blaze of burning glory before quickly dying down, leaving not even an ember behind, just a few scorch marks here and there. Alexander falls unconscious.
