The Cliff
The sky is a bright blue with clouds floating through effortlessly being strung thin, and patch-worked in the sky. There were few to no animals other than the goats and rams that ran around in the high climate, and birds that flew to and from the barrier around the floating village. Each clump of earth was raised high above the ground. The climate controlled the weather. Barrier that would make sure none of the people would freeze to death from the dropped degrees below.
Looking more closely there's people who had lived on these floating islands for millennial's. Their ancient ancestors having raised the lands after warring had reached too high of a cost. These people had gotten used to the thin air working away farming as if nothing had changed those many years ago. The sound of children cheering can be heard as we take a closer look at a particular little girl, Viv.
Hopping on top of the stones Viv kept her hazel eyes shut tight so she could to resist the urge of looking down at the bottomless sky below. Underneath the smoothed rocks, and to keep true with the dare from the other kids. As she skipped her breath got caught in her throat her bobbed silver hair floated up before hitting down as she walked hopped across the rocks. This continued until she felt grass under her feet. She had let out a sigh as the cheers of the children behind her started.
Viv was deathly afraid of heights, not the best fear to have when your town lives on floating islands. She had to clutch her tanned hands tightly as she took deep breaths in and out. Turning around she saw the other kids walking away still cheering, but at each other now with only one of her friends, Fay, skipping up the rocks over to her. Fay's hair stayed almost completely still as with her dark brown hair held tight to her in a bun.
"I can't believe you went over the rocks like that!" She enthused, her green eyes gleaming in excitement. When she made it to Viv you could see the clear difference in bodies as Fay was much taller and lanky, while Viv's own was more athletic from running around so much.
"I have to be honest I almost had a heart attack after doing that though." Viv was still quite shaken from jumping over backward, but considering Fay's laughter that came soon after she must have taken it as a joke. So Viv went along laughing with her friend, which in turn calmed her nerves from earlier. "Well let's say we go on, I wanna get as far away from the ledges as possible."
"Heh... Well I guess you're right," Agreed Fay as she turned her head looking back behind her seeing the ledge to the almost bottomless sky underneath only a few feet away. "But at the same time we're not even really that close you know."
Walking over closer to the ledge Fay smiled.
"It's not like I'm gonna fall or anything, we've been living near these things for years after all." Looking away from the edge and at her friend She could see that Viv was glued to her spot watching carefully at her friend.
"Hey maybe you should come back over here, we shouldn't-"
"Yeah I know be near the cliffs." Fay cut Viv off, grinning.
"Oh no I'm slipping what am I to do?" Fay mocked pretending to slip closer to the edge of the cliff. Walking up closer now, Viv was over with this game.
"Okay I get it it's not bad, but can we please get home now." Fay turned nodding her head and began walking back. With the second step though her feet slipped back and with a thump Fay had hit the ground. Her legs were dangling over the edge and soon was half her torso. Panicked Fay grabbed at anything she could only being able to grab at the grass. She tore at the grass trying to keep herself from falling any further than she already had. Viv was frozen as she watched her friend try and stay on the ground. Terrified, millions of thoughts traced her mind before taking a deep breath in running over grabbing at her friend's hand to pull her up. The sudden weight from her friend letting go of the grass to hold her hands was too much for her though as she was jolted forward having to let go of one of Fay's hands to keep her on the ground.
Fay swung faintly as she hung in the air from her friend. As Viv began slipping forward Fay grabbed onto the ground above her again and began pushing herself up. Quickly Viv let go of the ground taking her friends arm with both of her hands and throwing her up onto the ground. Both girls breathing heavily lay before scrambling further away from the edge of the land. Standing up Fay and Viv looked to each other with fear stricken in their eyes, before Fay grinned hugging Viv tightly.
"Bottomless sky that could end me...equals bad... Got it." Turning to Viv, Fay gave an odd smile to break the fear that had just enclosed them. Both girls laughed nervously before separating from the hug. "So let's get going then and have a... almost fell to our deaths special treat." With that Fay pushed Viv forward to her house Viv being somewhat of a hero to Fay now with this day never to be spoken with words.
