Time for a new friendship?

Nick made his way casually through the halls of the new school, glancing every once in awhile back at the map of the school that he had with him. No matter how many times he had read about the history of the school prior to coming, nothing prepared him for the labyrinth that was the floor plan. He should have expected it considering how massive the place was but still, did the stairs REALLY need to move, probably not. Nonetheless he made his way to a class he had been looking forward to for a while, transfiguration. A way to make something become what it is not, an interesting idea in the world of today where people are never what they seem most of the time.
That led Nick to thinking of one idea he quite liked about the school so far, that everyone looked similar, there was no incredibly noticeable difference in class based off a simple glance such as at muggle schools, and yet Nick was still dressed nicely. He had on nice black dress shoes that were shining underneath his robes, slacks and a nice white shirt underneath. The only visible difference being the simple but nice silver necklace his mother had given him and a nice silver watch that his father had given him as well that he would occasionally glance at to make sure he would be on time.
And he was, early in fact. Walking into class he saw that many of the students had arrived early, which was expected considering it was the first day many would be worried. Yet a lot of seats were empty as well, students that had undoubtedly lost their way or were simply not used to the size of the castle and may end up late. Nick glanced around the room and found the nearest open seat to the front of the room, next to a girl. He made his way over and sat next to her, taking care to not startle the girl by being too loud. He placed his books on the desk and checked his watch again, a few minutes still left before class would start.
Nick looked next to him at the girl, she was pale but with dark features. The first part that jumped out to Nick however was the style of hair she had, seemingly as though every strand was a different length, it was quite interesting to Nick. Not something one would see every day, and uniqueness was something Nick respected, ironic considering how “normal” his look was. Nicked huffed to himself “Come on Nick your goal was to make friends”. He was ecstatic to be able to learn something from one of the classes he looked forward to, but he had also promised himself that he would make new friends at Hogwarts. This was his first chance!
“Hey, I like your hair, it's got a unique look to it.” Nick said to the girl in a warm and inviting tone hoping she would acknowledge him back. “It really fits with the hat and robes and such” he said with a smile as he sort of nervously messed with his watch, rotating it back and forth on his wrist.

Time for a new friendship?
Thursday, September 2, 2021 - Third Period
Transfiguration was her third class of the day, having already completed Charms and Potions. Lunch had just finished up, her belly was full and she was feeling a bit tired as she may have eaten too much. There were so many choices, she felt she needed to get a taste of everything.
She did leave the Great Hall after lunch a little bit early, to give herself some time to find the Transfiguration class. Mireia had a great fear of being late and running in when the Professor was speaking. This happened to her a couple times in muggle school - before Hogwarts - and she was not a fan.
Mireia was not the first to arrive in class, but she was certainly not the last. Plenty of seats were still empty and so she chose a desk near the front. Not AT the front - she did not want to seem too eager, she simply wanted to get a good view - she figured that was probably a good idea in Transfiguration class.
She had about enough time to grab her note scroll and quill from her bag and set them up on her table when someone sat down at the desk next to her.
She glanced over and saw a boy, from Gryffindor she believed, had taken the seat. He was normal looking, brown hair, dressed in the school robes. His robes were similar to her own that she wore, but Mireia's had blue accents, to show her House of Ravenclaw. She tried to match the colors on the very first day of school, wear the blue with pride. While it was a shock to be out in to Ravenclaw, she did find herself being proud that she could be called clever and hardworking. To match, today, she had worn blue netted fingerless gloves on her hands. They extended just past her wrist, not even halfway to her elbow. Along with that she chose to wear a bit of makeup today, mostly a heavy black eyeshadow, but paired it with bright blue eyeliner on both top and bottom, and blue mascara. She wore her robes wrapped around her pretty closely as she found herself getting cold in this huge castle, but if one could glance underneath she wore a simple short sleeves black collared shirt, black knee length skirt and her black boots with plain legs, no tights today. And of course she donned her witches hat for the first day of school.
It wasn't long before the boy spoke to her. In fact she had just glanced away after looking over when he spoke to her. She tensed at his first sentence, unique he said, about her hair. She was not sure if it was an insult. Until, of course, his second sentence. And then she felt foolish, he was just being friendly.
A smile lit up her face rather quickly. "Thanks!" She said excitedly, and stick out her hand for a shake, "I'm Mireia, are you excited for Transfiguration class? I wonder what we will be changing. How long do you think it'll take before we can successfully transform something?"

Time for a new friendship?

He was glad to see his remark landed well with the girl he had chosen as his neighbor for class, his first friend at the new school maybe? He calmed himself, he didn't wanna get ahead of himself and ruin what could become something good. Nick leaned over and stuck out his right hand to meet the girls for a shake, making sure it was firm but not too much, something his father said he had to do when meeting anyone even if Nick felt it odd.
"My names Nick, and I am super excited. I dont know what we will be changing, id love to change myself personally but I dont think thats gonna be it" Nick said with a chuckle, he really did wanna learn how to change himself into an animal of some kind, but figured it was far harder than he would be able to manage right now. "Honestly anything would be amazing though, after all would be the first changing of something into another I have ever done! Hopefully its a one lesson kind of thing though!" Nick said with a determined face that was accompanied by a smile.
The boy had hopes that he would be learning to do spells as soon as his teacher started trying to teach them, but he also knew that in middle school the first days were always taken up by ice breakers and information, rarely actual teaching so while he was hopeful he also was aware it may not be the case.
"How about you? I wonder if the teacher will give some cool display, maybe change a rock into a cat or something, that would be cool!" Nick exclaimed getting overly excited.

Time for a new friendship?
She had realized soon after she had stopped talking that she had probably said too much too quickly once again. She was talkative, and it wasn't a treat that she disliked about herself, but it was one she knew could overwhelm people sometimes. She didn't do much to try and change this, again she liked this part of herself, but she did recognize that it would be too much for some people, and so she looked for people who could handle it.
But this boy seemed to be one of the ones who could handle it, he addressed everything she said without hesitation. She grinned at him and listened as he spoke. The class filled with students around them she was sure the Bell was going to ring soon. So she launched into her response as soon as his lips closed.
"Oh I'm sure we won't be doing human transformation anytime soon. Probably not even this year!" She exclaimed. Although, to be honest, she wasn't sure about anything for this class. Her parents did not practice Transfiguration all that often. The most common thing she saw her parents do was conjuring, rarely any switching or transformations. And so her own experience was rather lacking. So in all actuality, she didn't know if human transformation was actually the easiest type of transfiguration, although common sense told her it probably was one of the harder ones.
"I don't know what we will do today. Do you think we'll get right into a spell? I'd love to learn a spell today. How long do you think it takes to learn as well? My parents say it takes a while but how hard can it really be we've been watching them do it forever." She rambled. "But I'm pretty sure we won't be transforming anything ali-"
Just then the bell chimed to signal class had started and she was cut off. She grimaced at the boy - also now realized she had forgotten his name - and looked towards the Professor. She would have to wait now before she could learn it. She had a terrible habit of immediately forgetting a strangers name the first time they told it to her. Maybe there would be some sort of classwide introduction like at muggle schools. She hated those but it did help with remembering faces and names.

"Oh I'm sure we won't be doing human transformation anytime soon. Probably not even this year!"
Nick was disappointed at this remark, but new it probably to be true, after all it was probable that changing something living to something else was probably a lot harder, what with all the complicated parts of being alive, DNA, organs and what not was probably a lot harder to change than just a blob of mass. Nonetheless his dismay was quickly out the window as he listened to the girl continue talking. Nick had to hand it to her, she could carry a conversation on her own if she wanted most likely, seemingly able to talk in chains of thoughts with ease. It was something Nick liked in friends, talkers, because he loved to listen and learn from others after all.
Nick thought it may be likely that the two would get to learn a spell, it made sense in the end that one of the ways to get kids interested the first day of class was to have them try to actually do magic. Hopefully it wouldn't end up taking to long to learn though but he wouldn’t know yet or be able to answer any of Mireia’s questions as the bell rang, cutting off his neighbor. Nick leaned over just before the professor began his lesson and responded to the last part at least before she got cut off.
“I don't think we will either, sadly.” He whispered.
The lesson carried on, an introduction to transfiguration, as was explained. It went through about how transfiguration was magic that was based “on the alteration of the form or appearance of an object” particularly on a molecular structure level. The way it was explained was interesting to Nick, because he was pretty sure molecular structures were not something muggle kids ever really heard about until at least highschool. But they weren't muggles anymore, they were all wizards and in the end it meant they probably were in a whole different ball field now. It was mentioned that Transfiguration was also one of the more”scientific” fields of magic, which was an interesting idea, the thought that magic could at all be scientific was in itself very ironic. Nonetheless Nick sat listening very intently on the lecture before the class was eventually given their first task, to turn a whistle into a watch.
They were allowed to work together it seemed so Nick turned back to Mireia. “Well I guess that answers your question, don't know how easy it will be but the opportunity was given at least. Wanna try to learn it together?” Nick asked, glancing around seeing others working in pairs or groups as well, and a few students seemingly also trying it alone. Nick didn’t exactly mind working alone, having done it many times in muggle school, but his goal now was to make friends, and unlike normal muggle knowledge where Nick seemingly had an advantage to many, wizard knowledge was far different, and he was like a fish out of water.

Time for a new friendship?
Learning and practicing a spell on the first day of the first year of wizarding school? This was only Mireia's third period - ever - but she still thought that was fairly outragish. Shouldn't they get at least a week before diving into casting actual magic.
This was the day she had always been acting for, finally allowed to use magic, purposeful magic. This whistle to watch spell would be the first ever spell she would cast, and maybe the first spell she ever mastered. She was suddenly nervous. She always thought she would be excited and ready right away. But now she only felt scared and unsure.
She was brought out of her worried stupor by the boy next to her - his name she had still not remembered - as he began to speak to her again. She tried to calm her face as she looked over to him.
Immediately she felt like her answer was yes, and she spewed it out of her mouth quick enough, before her thoughts quickly turned back to fear. What if this boy had no trouble whatsoever and Mireia couldnt cast it at all? That would be humiliating. But she had already agreed.
"Sure!"
Too late now. She grabbed the whistle that had been put on her desk by a rather handy hovering spell that she mentally out in her list to learn at some point. Gripping the edge of her little desk she scooted it around so that it was slightly facing her neighbors. She placed the whistle in the middle of her desk and brought out her wand.
In the air she practiced the wand movement a few times, but never said the incantation aloud. She was still feeling rather nervous. She especially did not want to go first.
"You want to give it a shot?" She asked her neighbor hopefully.

Nick was glad to see the girl next to him was willing to work together, he was never one to really want to work in groups or pairs in muggle school, but this was far different. Something about the thought of using magic made Nick wonder if those shows that always made remarks about power being innate was a real thing. Maybe there was a chance that he would never be as good at magic as he wanted to be, and that was already a high enough bar to try and reach considering how badly he wanted to become a great duelist. But here he was, worried to try the very first spell ever offered to him. Worried, not afraid though. When his partner asked if he wanted to try it out, and try it out first between the two of them he didn't mind. Why not right?
Nick said the incantation while moving his wand in what he hoped was the proper way. Nothing...
"Well that didn't seem to work." Nick said with a smile. He wasn't exactly surprised which in the end resulted in him not being embarrassed either. He was disappointed of course, he would always to have loved to been successful his very first attempt, but for someone who had no experience it was only to be expected.
He looked back at Mireia, maybe she would have better luck. "Your turn I guess, cant do any worse than that." the boy finished with a chuckling attempting to lighten up the mood hopefully.

What was the point in turning a whistle in to a watch anyway? A watch was certainly more useful than a whistle, but when did anyone ever have a whistle? Why was the spell so specific? Could this same incantation and wand movement turn any small thing in to a watch? Or did every single transfiguration have a different set of rules? Mireia couldn't fathom that that was right, there would be too many. How would anyone be able to remember the right one at the right time?
She sighed a bit in relief and started to calm a bit down when her partner failed miserably at his first attempt. He was right, though, you really can't do worse then that.
She smiled and gave a small laugh out loud. "That was really bad!" She exclaimed, but her tone was clearly playful, and chuckled again in relief. "Ok, my turn." She stated more confidently.
The pointed her wand at the whistle before her and took a deep breath. She thought about the wand movement carefully in her head before she repeated the movement physically, tracing the pattern in the air with the tip of her wand. Then she stated the incantation, but immediately as it left her mouth she knew the pronunciation was off.
The whistle on her desk did react to her spell to Mireia's delight. It did not transfigure, but it shook terribly on itself for only a second, jingling upon the desk. She grinned in accomplishment. That was not terrible for her very first purposeful act of magic!
"Did you see that?" She exclaimed to her partner, "I was close, yeah?" She giggled. "Ok, ok, you're turn. You can do even better I bet!" She would use the time between her turn to practice the incantation in her head. She was especially interested to hear her partners attempt, if he pronounced it correctly or not.

Nicked was slightly embarrassed at the girl playfully messing with him, he deserved it for the pitiful attempt, but he quickly forgot about it, more hopefully now that the girl would be able to do it herself. He watched as she made her attempt and managed to do well more than Nick himself had done. But one thing Nick noticed was a slightly different movement of the wand than Nick had done. He knew his pronunciation had been fine which meant that it must of been the wand moving that was off.
"Well I was right, definitely wasn't worse" Nick said in response with a slight chuckle again. "I don't know if better is the right word, but no harm in trying right?" Nick said this and immediately rethought it in his head. He had remembered hearing how possible it was for their to actually be harm when magic was done poorly, whether it was the spell doing something unintended or even firing back on the caster, harm was always possible.
Nonetheless he made sure this time to follow the correct movements, making them directly as his partner had. He focused on reciting the words as best he could as well, making sure to annunciate as well as he could. He watched as the whistle began to slowly distort, moving his face slowly away half expecting it to explode. Instead it "Transfigured" into a watch, one that looked exactly the same as the one on his wrist. It was after all the major image that he had of a watch in his mind while casting the spell.
The watch could be seen for only a second however, a single tick of the second hand before it quickly distorted right back into the watch it had been only a moment before. Nick was full of delight, it was by no means a perfect success, but he had at least managed to make the image in his head come to life. "Well....that went better than expected!" Nick Exclaimed. "Now if only I could actually make it stay that way hunh. I realized after watching you my wand movements were off and it really made a difference!." Nick finished happily. "Your turn again!"

Time for a new friendship?
Oh! Well that was exciting, Mireia thought. "You totally did it!" She exclaimed as she witnessed the whistle blink into a watch and blink back again. Her mind briefly flared with a bit of jealousy, but it was gone quicker than the watch as the excitment was too great.
Of course she had seen magic before, countless times every day at home. But it was something about seeing a fellow 11-year old be successful so quickly that really got her going. If he could do it - so could she and so she was that much closer to completing her first spell.
Of course, she knew it would be a while before she mastered the spell and would be able to 100% successfully cast it every single time. But everyone had to start somewhere.
Mireia was flattered that her classmates observance of her attempt taught him more on how to complete the spell. But she also scolded herself, she should have been paying more attention to him, when she was actually staring intently at the whistle as to not miss anything.
Well, hopefully she could take notes from herself and her prior attempts. She took a deep breath as her partner reliquished his turn to her. She raised her wand again at the now still whistle and thought deeply about the incantation and wand movement for a solid few moments before casting.
Her eyes stared at the whistle as she casted, trying to focus deeply. She did not want to miss a single wiggle. And wiggle it did. But, unfortunately, that was all it did. The whistle clattered against the desk momentarily but then fell still. Mireia thought, perhaps, she had seen the base of the whistle, which was already somewhat round, widen as if it was trying to form the face of a watch. But she couldn't be sure, it was all over so quickly. She sighed audibly in disappointment.
"Alright." She said wearily, "Your turn, and I'll do better paying attention to your cast." And she meant it, she would pay less attention to the whistle itself and more to the actions of her partner, of whom she still did not know his name. This was always so embarrassing to her. How would she figure it out before class ended?
