Everly plucked a leaf from the tree above her as it swayed back and forth from the wind, shivering slightly in her coat. Saturday had been especially cold for some reason, considering it was already mid February. Without classes, Everly was left to her own devices to entertain herself. She could probably be inside, catching up on homework or something, but Everly'd already had enough of homework that day. She'd ended up here, staring up at the sky as the branch came dangerously close to leaving a scratch on her face, with Tzahala was curled up next to her feet.

She folded the leaf twice, before ripping through it, casting it away. Her book had been left unopened, the owner without much motivation to start it. Maybe actually doing something would be more productive than whatever she was at the moment, she supposed, but she didn't have a real reason to do so. After all, it was the weekend, so maybe she should-

A dangerous, life-threatening idea leapt into her head. What if she- maybe- perhaps- talked to someone?

The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. There was, after all, nothing else to do, so it was basically the best option for her at the moment. She wasn’t in dire need (was she?) of more friends, but it wouldn’t hurt anyone if she had some more (unless that friend had some strange aversion to friends, but they’d get over it. everything was going to work out fine), so why not? Friend-hunting was a great waste of her time, and Everly was quite proficient at it (or, she liked to think so).

Everly scoured the grounds around her for her target, her cat still in her arms. Two Hufflepuffs were chatting eagerly by the lake shore- nah, she could do better. And- oh!- a little first year Ravenclaw sat by herself, captivated by their book, and there-

There dwelled her next target.

“Aha! You, perfect! Hello there, nice to meet you! What’s your name? I’m Everly, we’re acquainted now!”

Nicholas was all but asleep, he’d no intention of doing so, it had all occurred as a matter of happenstance really. The weather was positively frigid and usually such iciness would keep the second year awake. Alas, that was not the case that Saturday, and the combination of exhaustion and the comfort of a thick flannel coat served to render him sufficiently drowsy to drift off into a dreamless half-sleep. He was aware of his surroundings, the feeling of falling near constant, but he clung to sleep with all the desperation that his subconscious could muster.

The tree he leant against served to shield his face and eyes from the winter sun, and it had evidently been predestined to assist him further, for the patch of ground upon which he sat was blessedly free of snow.

He could not remember what it was he was thinking of before he drifted to sleep, could barely remember most of the day, the grogginess had made sure of that. The entire morning had been a blur, trudging steps down to breakfast, trudging steps elsewhere, the intervening periods lost to the fabric of time and memory. In truth, it was as if his day had never truly started, the entire solar cycle having been rendered as nothingness.

There would have been a degree of contentment were he to spend the rest of his time doing that, making use of the rather rare taste of rest. Of course, the universe had no such plans for him. A voice brought him out of his doze, his groggy eyes shooting open with a start, the cheery tones of a brunette girl cutting through his slumber like a knife.

“Wha-” Nicholas cut the question off before he could finish it, instead opting to yawn and blink his eyes rapidly, trying to force awakeness upon his fatigued body.

He sat in silence for a moment, sluggish thoughts taking them time to formulate and gestate. Only once the greeting was processed, did he finally reply, “Uh, hey, I’m Nicholas. Nice to meet you, Everly.” The words slurred as he spoke, the sense of familiarity that seemed to paint every one of his thoughts increasing constantly as he continued to look at her. Had they met before? He was too tired to think straight.

“Can I- Did y’need something?” His accent only thickened as his newly awakened state only caused the words to slur further.

Unfortunately, it seemed her new friend was not as energized as Everly was. That was alright, Everly had enough for the both of them. With a small frown, she'd scrutinize the other Gryffindor's face. He looked more familiar up close than he had from a distance, but a name was yet to be remembered. She was sure that she knew it, though, but forgetfulness was a trait that Everly seemed to specialize in. She was bound to remember it. Any time now.

In the meantime, though, Friend (as she'd fondly nicknamed him internally since his real name would remain unknown) needed some waking up. He came to his senses rather slowly, as Everly had woken him from his nice little nap. She did feel rather guilty about that, she was sure it'd been a nice dream, but it was for his own good, after all. He did the work for her, though—Nicholas, his name was. Ah, there was her brain. He was in her year and her house (really, how did she manage to not recognize him? Everly was a miracle), and now she recalled seeing him in some of her classes and around the Gryffindor common room. She didn't think they'd ever really talked before, though, besides in passing, so this was perfect for her to properly introduce herself.

"Yes, hello, nice to meet you," she said breezily, plopping herself down next to his little spot underneath a tree, rather similar to where she'd just been. Perhaps, she pondered, he was simply drowsy because it was Saturday. Saturdays were always quaint for her, a day to relax and sleep in. It was rather late for a nap, though, especially in these cold temperatures. Perhaps she just needed more experience in napping outside. "So," she began, "... What's your favorite color? Mine's pink. Or purple. Or something else, I'm honestly not sure. Oh gosh, do you know when people say their favorite color is 'rainbow' or 'all of them' or something like that? I always feel like they're avoiding something. Like, you can have more than one favorite, but can you really like all colors? There has to be at least one you don't like. For me, that's neon yellow. Like, the color of pee. It's disgusting." She shook her head rapidly at the thought of it.

After all, the first step to becoming friends was to get to know each other better, right?

Nicholas struggled to bring his consciousness to bear, and it was indeed a struggle. He’d been rather comfortably asleep, not that he’d even realised he’d drifted off, and it was fast becoming a genuine battle to shift his mental state from one of comfortable rest to more active engagement with the conversation. Especially when his partner in said conversation was so quick to begin speaking as to colours and their associations. Nicholas could only blink and further adjust his posture, as the rain of words cascaded down upon him. He’d no intention of being rude, not truly, but it was difficult sometimes to maintain his concentration. Especially half of his brain was focused on trying to rapidly shake off the last vestiges of an afternoon nap.

Sluggish thoughts dragging him downward to a clouded mess of confusion or no, he strained to comprehend what Everly was saying. Rainbows bad? Ok, he wasn’t particularly fond of them, truth be told. Although he supposed he always did associate rainbows with pink, they seemed to rather naturally fall on the same spectrum as far as favourite colours went. Neon yellow also bad? He wasn’t really going to argue against that as a point, the girl made a compelling argument. Unfortunately, many of her words were lost on his dazed and confused self, although that was surely not his fault.

Once more he shifted, “Dark red, I s’pose?” The words were punctuated by a yawn, and then a hastily muttered apology, “Sorry.”

“Although, I guess that might be a bit close to blood…” He added, trailing off as he did so, “Maybe like maroon then, or burgundy. Like the uh… what’s it called? You know… like the big ol’ rich lookin’ thing… velvet?”

Another yawn was caught with the back of his hand, “Sorry. Still a bit sleepy.”

Shaking his mess of matted curls, the boy shifted the topic away from his apparent lack of energy, “You look familiar…” He blinked, “Wait, you’re not a Gryffindor are you?”

He prayed she wasn’t, forgetting a housemate would be more than just slightly embarrassing.
