A round of repetition and surprises - Galton was beginning to see the duelists’ favorites.

Robert would go for another Rictusempra; if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And Robert would try. The cast was methodical like the last, you could see the practiced technique as his wand moved with the incantation. But like last round, his target would find a split second to move a hair out of the way. His spell would putter off.

Mars however, seemed to have awakened a fire in their heart after the whirlwind of last round. And that flame would move from heart to wand, a potent Incedio Duo shooting out and towards Ileen. Unlike with Robert’s spell, Ileen would be caught by the burning magic, engulfed in the wicked flames.

Ileen had her own favorite spell, Ventus, for Robert though. The two seemed to be locked onto one another, stuck in a loop. This time though, Robert would not be able to escape some of the wind. While there was no split, Robert would take the full torrent, trapped further in the chaotic air’s stream.

To make matters worse, Bridget would add an extra bit of damage to the lad. A flipendo would crash into the boy. It seemed leaving Bridget to focus without much danger improved her aim significantly.

Robert and Ileen were looking a bit worse for wear when the magic cleared. Both stuck in their own elemental hell. Would they be able to escape?

Thanks to Ileen's Ventus, wind swirled around Robert, resisting his movements. Bridget shifted her stance to take advantage of that, her simple Flipendo striking true alongside another Wind Jinx from Ileen. They were doing well, chipping away at their opponents, and this was probably the most consistently Bridget had ever landed hits.

Granted, this might just be the least attention she'd ever had in a duel. Last year, she drew the majority of the spells, and while that had meant rarely having the time she needed to aim well, especially as she was getting experience duelling, she hadn't really minded; spells coming at her meant spells not coming at Santario, who was excellent at taking out the opposition. The bigger threat, really, in Bridget's opinion. But since the dawn of this year, it had been much the reverse, only a few spells intended to keep her out the way coming in her direction while the rest looked to take out her teammates. Casting uninterrupted was simultaneously nice and odd after so much practice being quick on her feet.

She grimaced as Mars lit Ileen on fire; many things in duelling hurt, but there was something extra torturous about flames eating at your clothes, your skin. "Alright?" Though they lacked the time to coddle wounds, knowing how her teammate was doing was pertinent. Besides, she would offer whatever support she could, even if it was only verbal encouragement and a quickly flashed smile; Ileen did not have to suffer against the burning unacknowledged.

Finally. Finally! The awful tickling charm was finally over and she could catch her breath again. And not a moment too soon. Just a second later another of those evil spells came her way, but this time she saw it coming and stepped out of the way.
In the same movement she carefully aimed, squinting her eyes and shooting another ventus. This time, the boy who was already struggling with the wind was not fast enough and she landed a full hit. “Hah!”
But she celebrated too early. Ileen wasn’t used to being the only target on the stage. Mostly her opponents had given them equally much attention. Not this time.
Mars, the Ravenclaw from her own year, sent something her way. Ileen saw it, she tried to step out of the way, but just as Robert, she wasn’t fast enough this time. Her robes immediately caught fire and the familiar and hated biting pain shot through her body where the flames were licking her skin.
The young girl gritted her teeth, fighting back a painful moan that just came out as a silent hiss. Her misery was noticed by her co-captain and team partner, but Ileen tried to put her mind at ease. Although she had taken some hits, it looked good for them and this little fire would not bring them down. She would not allow it to distract them. Yet, she was glad that Bridget cared for her. “I’m okay, it’s nothing.” She straightened her back, ready for her next move.

Robert was not doing too great. On one hand, he knew that if he’d taken this much damage a year ago, he would have been peacefully unaware of anything happening around him by now. On the other hand, he hated the fact that he was still slow enough to take this much damage in the first place. To make matters worse, he wasn’t even awarded the feeling that his presence was positively affecting his team’s performance.

Then Robert realized. This was that unavoidable part of the duel where he started questioning things. This logical admittance to himself helped surprisingly much. Suddenly, he wasn’t thinking about all his horrible decisions which led him to this stage of this life, he was thinking about why he was choosing this time to reflect on these things. Interesting, he thought to himself. This was something he would have to explore when he wasn’t under brutal attack. Carefully shelving the train of thought and putting a bright sticky note next to it labeled “Important,” the boy turned his attention back to the duel.

Mars let out a whoop of joy as the flames hit home, their wand sparking happily in their palm.

"You did it," they whispered, maybe slightly delirious from the couple of spells they'd taken. Mars spun it around, feeling as though it shook vibrantly as they did.

The sound of the spell hitting Robert was not the greatest though. Mars winced, stopping their small jubilee. Right, still in the middle of a duel. Right, still definitely not in the greatest place.

But they'd hit, at least, and fire too. Not all hope was lost, in theory.

Mars grinned over at Aristaeas, where the snake had flattened down as far as it could go. It looked very dangerously like it want to strike. They waved, waggingly their fingers.

Then, Mars turned back to the duel.

It seemed that whatever spirit, god or ghoul that ruled over the domain of dueling wanted to cause mischief. There was something in the air, it must have made focusing harder. Maybe fatigue was setting in?

The first, and worst effected, was Mars. Their own wand would spit their magic back at them - which happened to be flames. It was a horrific site, self-engulfing flames that consumed the poor Raven. When the first of the flames died down, Mars was left with a small portion for their own, to keep them warm.

Then Bridget was caught in whatever cruel mishaps that blew in. If it wasn't for dutiful studies (or maybe talent) and a plethora of experience, she too would have had her own magic turned on her. But sadly for Robert, she had those things. Her aim would not waiver, even with Robert's spry movement that he had dedicated himself to, he would feel a flipendo crash into him.

Ileen would copy her teammate, aiming the same spell towards Robert. This time though, Robert would get himself out of the way of the haphazardly cast spell. Lucky, as he didn't seem like he could take another hit like Bridget's.

The tide had turned towards the Snakes. Even as the flames burned and dissipated from Ileen, the Ravens were left in poor shape. Would they be able to stand any more of the snake's venom? Would they be able to Soar high enough to evade?!

Bridget had felt it coming on, of course. Even someone who had never experienced a backfire could tell something was off and have just enough time to wonder what before it hit them. The fourth year had backfired on herself many times in the past, so rather than that split-second realization, she knew almost right away, and she had practiced for this, hours poured into eliminating such mistakes. That mostly meant drilling incantations and wand motions and focus until she didn't mess them up, but in moments like this where she did, she knew how to grit her teeth, quell the swelling, wrong magic, and direct it out of the right end of her wand.

Why exactly she'd nearly backfired she didn't know, too busy wrestling with her magic to process that. Perhaps it had been the distraction of Mars' backfire across the stage, or maybe her concentration was fatiguing as the duel drew on and she settled into a rhythm, not so aware of every little detail of her casts. Whatever the case, the Flipendo left her wand and flew true, if a little shakily at first, straight into Robert. The only evidence of the near-disaster was a handful of weak sparks that she quickly blinked out of her vision.

The mental struggle had left her tense and tunnel-visioned; she sighed and rolled her shoulders back, surveying the platform. Ileen had missed, which was fine. Mars was on fire. Opponents though they were, Bridget felt a pang of sympathy, knowing firsthand how awful backfires were. For it to be an Incendio made it even worse, though she would say she was glad those flames weren't adding to the burns left by the just gone-out Incendio of the cast before.

The biting flames on her robe drew all of Ileen’s attention although she tried to stay in the game. It’s hard to ignore pain, no matter how much you want to push harder. What actually saved her was the adrenaline - she was in battle and it rushed through her veins, blurring out the worst. She didn’t even see Mars’ spell backfire - she was too much in her own world, focused on herself and her target. Everything that didn’t enter that circle was blocked out by her mind being in the tunnel vision.
With a last flickering light, the flames went out and left Ileen’s robes smoking. The relief was as numbed as the pain - not capable of going to the place with all the feelings her eyes were fixed on her target - the Ravenclaw boy Robert who just had suffered another hit from her teammate. “Nice aim!” She really was highly impressed by her Co-Captain. She had landed almost every spell so far, remaining untouched herself. Hopefully, she herself would get there someday.
Her own spell was sent only a second later, but although he was obviously doing bad, the boy managed to dodge it.
Ileen fought down the urge to heal him. It was the wrong place to do that, she probably could help in the Hospital Wing later.
Her own breath was heavy and she felt that her own body was fighting. But she didn’t go there. It wasn’t over just yet.

Ah. It was hopeless now. Mars felt it--right as they cast the spell, they could feel it bubble and spark, ballooning out like a wart just waiting to burst. Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t. Too late to take it back, too late to throw it away. Too late to not have joined the duel, and way, way too late to have never become a wix at all. Sometimes, they really wished they weren't a wix at all.

Mars winced as the flames licked at their chest.

"Look, I get you're angry but did you have to do that?" they chided, shaking their wand lightly. It seemed to droop, and Mars sighed, stroking it lightly. "Well, either way,"--Mars fixed their gaze at the Snakes across the piste--"It'll be over soon."

Robert wasn't doing so hot either. Mars sighed, and rolled their neck over their shoulders. So fire, on the verge of death, and horribly bad luck. Not the worst they'd experience.

"Might as well go out with a bang," they said, flipping their wand up again.

It anyways felt odd to give up a chance to attack in a duel, but in this case, Robert had a sneaking suspicion that at this point, it was the best thing he could do for the team. His aim was obviously off today, and especially while he was off balance from the wind, it wouldn’t hurt to give some extra focus to dodging. In the end, it seemed to pay off. Even if he wasn’t able to get out of Bridget’s way, at least he managed to evade Ileen’s spell, which felt like the best he could have done in this situation. Robert sighed, and settled back into his dueling stance.
