xxxxxxxxDefense Against the Dark Arts. Not Maggie's best class. It wasn't terrible. It wasn't amazing. It was just in the middle, Switzerland, a class that Maggie had to take for graduation. Maybe if she could choose, she'd pick this one just for fun, or something. Spell-casting was awful fun, yes, and Maggie did love it, but she much preferred the gentle and easy incantations of charms class. Dark magic was cool and all, yeah, but did Maggie really need to learn all about it? She wasn't going to use any dark magic, so what was the point in learning about it?

Maybe that's why she sat at her desk, blowing hair from her face, swinging her legs under the tabletop, and hitting the legs with her feet. The paper that had been sat in front of her following their lesson looked like a blank space that she hadn't the slightest idea of how to fill. How was she to be expected? The teacher lectured, and they answered questions. Maybe a demonstration or two if they were lucky. How was Maggie expected to know everything about whatever it even was they were learning about? It was simply unheard of. Utterly ridiculous. Boring. All of the above.

With a sigh, heavy and loud, Maggie surveyed the wand next to her. It lay beside her right hand, just out of reach. If she stretched up slightly, she could reach it with a finger, and pull it down into her palm. It would give her something to fidget with, which was the only thing that could possibly keep her from going ballistic. It would be good for the whole class, surely.

So Maggie did just that. Her pointer finger stretched up to make contact with the handle of the wand, curling around it and gently dragging it down the wooden desk with little noise, save for the soft slide of wood-against-wood. Then, with the wand fully secured in the palm of her hand, she fidgeted. Worked it into the position that would best work, and adjusted her own arm so that the elbow lay against the edge of the table. Again scanning the parchment, empty besides an open Defense Against the Dark Arts textbook, Maggie began to tap the tip of her wand against the tabletop.

Over. And over. And over. The sound was calming to her, the repetitive motion and noise.

Tap, tap, tap.

Mei woke up early to her cat taking a seat on her chest while she slept. He had swayed his tail over her face repeatedly. She sat up slightly and moved the cat off of her. She turned over and tried to go back to sleep. The animal let out a quiet meow into her ear and Mei sat up once again. She opened a can of cat food and placed it on the floor for him. He leaped down and ate meowing contently once he was finished. Mei decided to just get ready for class.

She'd be one of the first ones there. That was not her usual but there was no way her cat would let her go back to sleep. She looked over to see her cat sleeping soundly on the corner of the bed. She shook her head and walked to the lavatory and brushed her teeth and then combed her forever messy hair. She walked back to the dorms and put on a pair of baggy jeans and a band tee shirt which she tied back and tucked in behind her. She placed her robes over top and pulled on a pair of black ankle boots and walked out.

She made her way down to the class making sure everything was in her bag. She walked in to the class for Defense Against the Dark Arts or DADA as everyone had shortened it to. She took her seat and laid her head down. She slept while waiting for everyone else to arrive. Soon enough she heard the trample of kids feet and sat up. She wiped the sleep from her eyes and watched as the class filled in.

Soon enough everyone was there along with the teacher. Mei took her quill and parchment and began to take notes as the professor lectured. Maybe today they would strike gold and get a demonstration.

Mei looked over at the girl who sat next to her who had sighed loudly. Mei rolled her eyes. Drama Queen. Mei continued to take notes and glanced back over at the girl when she noticed movement. The girl grabbed her wand and began to tap it against the desk. Mei tried to ignore it and continued taking notes. Eventually the tapping got to her too much and she snapped.

She turned to the girl and in a hushed whisper she irritatedly said "Oi! Quit that! It's damn annoying" Mei looked at the girl with her eyebrows furrowed and her lips pursed together tightly.

xxxxxxxxThe girl beside her was far more engaged in the lesson than Maggie was. Which was, at its core, incredibly irritating and altogether annoying, because that meant she might be a stickler. Which meant she might get mad about something as simple and small as tapping a wand to focus.

Maggie was correct. Mei Hagikura was already on her tail about tapping the wand, even though it wasn't even a big deal. At all. Whatsoever. She huffed again and glanced to her right, where Mei was currently complaining and making a big stink.

Would it be easy to just stop tapping and apologize? Yes, it would. Was Maggie spiteful and rude? Most definitely. So, instead of taking the easy (coward!) way out, she began tapping again. Louder this time. Faster. "Mind your business," she returned. "You're damn annoying. I'm not doing anything."

From how this girl looked, and the crowd that Maggie had seen her hanging around ordinarily, she was an upper-year. Not first, for sure. Maybe second. Maybe even third. Which just made Maggie feel infinitely cooler, the fact that she'd just talked back to someone older than her. Take that! Glowing with pride, Maggie turned back to the front of the classroom, wand still tapping away.

It wasn't a big deal. It wasn't something to start a fight over, yes, Maggie knew that. Plus, when it really did come to fighting, Maggie preferred to stay out of it in favor of tucking her tail between her legs and skidding off. But there was no chance that they'd really get into a fight in the middle of a Defense Against the Dark Arts class, where their classmates huddled over their tables attempting to take notes and their professor attempted to teach his unwilling subjects, little ants scurrying around beneath him.

They wouldn't fight. Mei wasn't that dumb. With luck, Maggie would leave this classroom today with a heightened sense of confidence, a smile on her face, and absolutely no repercussions for her actions.

Mei watched furiously as the girl began to tap her wand again. She tapped it louder. Tapping it faster. Mei sneered at the wretched girl. How obnoxious could she possibly be. "Mind your business" "Excuse me. Who do-" "You're damn annoying. I'm not doing anything.". Mei's eyes widened in anger. She furrowed her eyebrows more. Her lips that naturally turned up making her look like she was slightly smiling turned into a deep frown. Whoever this girl was, she had another thing coming.

Mei looked at her with eyes of hatred. "Who do you think you're talking to? And I was minding my own business however you are doing something and that something is tapping your wand. It's gotten rather annoying so cut it out." Mei looked at the girl as she put her quill down. She'd catch up on any notes she missed from arguing with this girl from one of her friends.

Mei raised and eyebrow at the girl and waited for her to stop tapping her wand. If she decided to stop tapping her wand. Mei was not trying to start a fight. She was trying to be nice but she wasn't the best at being nice. Saying rude things was more her kind of thing. But she did not want to serve a detention for arguing over a simple thing that could easily be stopped.

Dear @Mei Hagikura,

xxxxxxxxOh, at this point, it was just funny. Quite funny. It felt funny that Maggie was in a fight with an upper-year (at least, older than Maggie was). Over tapping her wand, much less. It was silly and ridiculous and maybe Maggie was making it a million times worse by not just backing down now, but her pride hung in the balance. Now, she couldn't possibly allow herself to lose. She couldn't possibly back down now, because backing down would mean letting Mei Hagikura win this little argument. Which Maggie really, really did not want to happen. Like, whatsoever. There was really nothing that she'd like less.

"I dunno. I don't even know who you are, so I'm really not sure who I think I'm talking to," Maggie hummed, laying the wand down on the tabletop and rolling it beneath her palm. Oh, Yes, right. No rolling. Tapping only. So, Maggie grabbed the wand again, tapping it with a newfound fervor against the tabletop. Just sheer spite was making her do this. The only thing that had Maggie acting this way, acting up, was spite. "Probably talking to an annoying drama queen right now, though, I think."

Wooh! That felt good! Felt real good!

Maggie turned that attention back to the front of the classroom, continuing to tap her wand. Grinning. The right corner of her mouth was turned up, quite proud about the fact that she was standing up to an older student.

"I don't know why you don't know my name. We are in the same class dumbass." She watched as the girl began to roll her wand underneath her palm. Finally. Mei turned to start back on her notes. Luckily they were still up on the board. She picked up her quill, dipped it in her jar of ink and began to scribble the notes down again. Then the tapping started again. Mei groaned under her breath.

She attempted to ignore the tapping. She continued on the notes. Tap tap tap. She glanced over. Tap tap tap. She rolled her eyes. "Drama queen? Did you just call me a drama queen? I'm not being a drama queen you are just being an annoying little piece of shit. I'm sure there are other people who would have told you to stop tapping your wand if you were in any other class." Mei watched the girl speaking a little louder than her normal talking voice. She was sure there were other people who found the tapping annoying. They were obviously just too cowardly to say anything.

Mei was not afraid to call her out in the middle of class. "Because you know. I'm just trying to take my notes and all I hear next to me is this." Mei grabbed her own wand and began tapping it just the way the girl was doing. She sat it back on the desk. "Trust me, If you were trying to take notes and someone else wouldn't stop tapping their pencil or wand in this case you would get annoyed as well."

Dear @Mei Hagikura,
May 13, 2022
xxxxxxxxMaggie rolled her eyes again. God, this was just the worst. Mei was irritating. Mei was dramatic and ridiculous and she couldn't possibly expect everyone to bend to her every whim and beck.

It was ridiculous.

Really, though, if you asked anyone else, they would probably agree that Maggie was being a little extreme. They would probably say that yes, Maggie had no reason to be going too hard against Mei, and she had no reason to insist upon making an issue when there really was none. There were no issues with simply agreeing to stop tapping her wand, there was no problem when it came to just saying sorry. But Maggie was stubborn and held a grudge and refused to back down from a fight. So Maggie shook her head and tapped harder. Louder. More. Tap-tap-tap-tap, off and on, off and on.

"Come off it. Get down off your high horse and admit that you're a drama queen with nothing better to do!" They were getting loud. The two of them were yelling, practically, going back and forth in a stupid argument that didn't mean anything and wouldn't matter in the long run. "It's pathetic. You're pathetic."

And Maggie didn't know why she did what she ended up doing next. It was stupid, she knew, and she didn't even know the rationale behind it, seeing as it wasn't going to be casting any jinxes or hexes on Mei Hagikura. Regardless of her reasoning, Maggie held the want aloft between Mei's eyes. As if she were going to do anything.
