History of Magic Lesson One
Why was every professor at Hogwarts a stern, barking, teacher? Syrah was pretty used to this type of attitude by now, she simply did not understand why each and every Professor started out every class acting like they hated the students. Were the students really just that bad historically? Or did the teacher simply not give them a chance? Either way this professor started out class by yelling and silencing the students.
At least he got on with the lesson rather quickly. Instead of wasting time dwelling on the punishments of losing house points or death and demise and injury. She figured, though, that this class was pretty safe. It was history after all. Zaira was pretty decent at the subject, it was relatively easy overall. She was sure this class wouldn't be too much different. History was generally pretty easy, and even easier when the event being taught was rather interesting. However, she knew they probably wouldn't be learning any spells or anything here. That kind of bummed her out.
Cazarez started by talking about the Gargoyle Strike. Syrah had not heard of it, but she did admit to hearing and even using the phrases associated with Gargoyles before. Although she did think they were kind of cheesy. She thought, too, that she knew what a Gargoyle was. Well the castle certainly had many of its own, each looking different from the last. Syrah's own home had two, it was a rather old home that had been renovated numerous times to look new. But her father kept the statues. They used to frighten her when she was younger.
It did not surprise her to hear that some gargoyles had a function. Hers at home did not have a function. They were simply at static. But she have certainly seen some, like at the Ministry of Magic, that were used to direct water like her professor said. The professor continued, and he almost offhandedly mentioned sentience in the Gargoyles. Surely this had something to do with the event they would be learning about.
She also didn't know about the old, ancient roots of the word Gargoyle. She quickly scratched them down on some paper, knowing that this was the exact kind of thing that would be on a test or homework later. However the roots did confuse her. What did the word gargoyle have to do with the throat or the gurgling sound of water. They didn't seem to have anything to do with either of those. Her question wasn't answered, either, in the lecture. Perhaps it was just one of those things that one had to accept rather than understand.

Her suspicions were proved correct, when the professor continued on and talked about Windilow castle and their sentient Gargoyle guards. At the mention of this, Syrah was sure that the Gargoyles around Hogwarts Castle where most certainly semi-sentient. Hogwarts was big about security, and she was sure they would do everything they could to beef it up. She would have to look next time she passed one and see if it was always sentient, or if it was triggered.
She did wonder, though, why the Gargoyles were only used as alarms. Why couldn't they do other things like fight? Or even something like chores? She guessed, by Cazarez's wording, that the stone statues went very good at moving around. That made sense, she decided. Oh, and apparently is was illegal to use them as other things. That's what they would be learning today. Ok, she was pleased with that. That question would have burned on her mind, but good thing it seemed to be the very topic they would be discussing today.
The Gargoyle Strike of 1911, she quickly took note of the date. It seemed rather recent to her. Most thistoic event took place hundred of year ago, at least in her experience. Perhaps wizarding history was more recent? That didn't seem to make sense. If abything Syrah would think it would be even older than muggle history. Maybe the class was simply going out of order...
As he lectured Syrah began to understand a bit more. Yes, pure sentience objects would almost certainly cause some sort of to bless somewhere down the line. If she, an eleven year old student, could figure that out, how did an entire castle of mature wizards not realize that?
Anyway the story ended up just how Syrah would have guessed. Humans being humans and therefore being very mean to their poor servants, kind of like House Elves, if she was being honest. Then of course they got angry and rebelled, which she felt like everyone could see coming. What shocked her is that the Windilow Castle couldn't clean up their own mess. That was simply not respectable. Instead the Ministry had to get involved and they finished destroying the Gargoyles. Apparently some wizards died, which in the wizarding world is a huge deal, but, according to Syrah, they deserved it for being so incompetent.
She remembered back to the beginning of the lesson what Cazarez mentioned that he did not agree with the Ministry. It came up again now when he taught about the law that was passed after the incident. How come Cazarez didn't agree with the law? It seemed solid enough. The law wasn't outright banning the creation of sentient creatures, it was simply controlling it. Which, to her, made a lot of sense. She wondered if that was a question she could also her teacher, or was it too impolite and personal?

History of Magic Lesson One
It was classic of Hogwarts, Syrah was finding out, to have homework after every single lesson. And the homework was hard. One would think after the very first lesson of a history class that the homework would be rather simple. But as she looked over it, she saw that was not so. The questions were relatively easy, but the requirements were what made that assignment hard. Cazarez required a fifty word minimum for almost every question and the questions were pretty straight forward. They did not need fifty words to accurately answer them.
Syrah sighed. Her father had warned her that Hogwarts was gruelling. She didn't think much of it at the time, parents always say stuff like that to get their children to work harder. It was just difficult for Syrah to ever get perfect points on assignments like these. She almost always missed something small or stupid... She looked up at the tapestries lining the walls and with those she could garner some idea of what her future lessons would be like. She knew they would end up with homework just like this. The small girl was certainly in for a long, difficult year a the school of witchcraft and wizardry.
