Colin left the Great Hall a little early one evening. He'd finished as much dinner as he wanted, but there was little sense in sitting alone at the end of the table, so he decided to check out the Courtyard. The cobble stones and the huge fountain with its grand carvings were interesting, but it was the arcade around the edges that drew him most. Tall viney plants and open archways invited exploration! He hopped up into one the empty arches and tried to reach the apex --- "Maybe in two years!" he said to himself. He tried again, this time on tip toes, but the apex of the arch seemed to be even farther away this time! "That's rubbish!"

Then he leapt down and with a cry of pure joy ran across the cobbles and leapt up onto the stone bench at the fountain's side. With his left hand he flung the hem of his robes back and pulled his wand out of his pocket and clinging desperately to his gryffin companion shouted spell after spell as the mighty hordes of Werewolfian warriors and the Sluagh na Marbh attacked their stronghold, all led by the dreaded Liche King himself, Edward the Unconfessed!

"Maravo! Marovo!" he shouted, slashing his wand this way and that as the host of the dead fell in great swathes before him. Colin jumped across the corner of the fountain to the rampart of his castle, High and Gateless and from there rained terror upon the Werewolfians with shouts of "Vailo! Vailo do marovo!"

At last, destruction befell the armies of the Liche King and Colin leapt down off his high ramparts and with the light of battle in his eyes charged the king of the dead! He ducked and parried, barely escaping the king's mighty blows! Until at last, he jabbed his wand into the king's stern face and with a triumphant cry of "Jangamanda!" Colin destroyed at last the power of the Liche King.

As he bid farewell to his castle, High and Gateless, something caught his eye scurrying along in the dusk near the far wall of the Courtyard. Colin crouched down low, fell silent, watching. Observing. It was a slight and furtive motion accompanied by a hesitant and faint scuffling noise. Shhhp, shhhp, the gentle sound of leaves and detritus being disturbed by something small.

Slowly he tucked his wand back into his pocket. He never took his eyes off the faint motion. It began near one of the peristyle gateways and slowly made its way towards into the direction of the corner where a tall vine-like plant stood. His mouth opened a little and he steadied his breathing. He licked his lips.

His heart began to race and he jumped up with a suddenness and ran pell mell across the Courtyard! He leapt at the last second and crashed to the ground next to one of the ancient trees! He dove in among the leaves and twigs that mulched the ancient roots. His fingers grasped here and there, seeking! But that which Colin sought was always a half inch ahead! Colin was undeterred and unfazed.

His breath quickened and he quickened his creeping through underbrush as his quarry neared the corner. Drat! The little bugger hopped in behind the vine where Colin couldn't follow, skinny as he was. But he shoved his arm in behind the vine and, pressing his face to the rough wood scrabbled around behind.

"Gotcha! Owoo!" he cried out in triumph.

It wasn't what Bea was expecting having just walked out of the Great Hall from dinner. Which was a boy with messy black hair crawling around in between the vines that ran along on of the archways. It was perhaps a little weird...and slightly curious. Which meant Bea had to investigate. "What are you doing?" Beatrice couldn't keep the slightly condescending tone from her voice. Although Bea herself didn't mind rolling in dirt and getting muddy, this was taking it to a whole new level! The vines themselves seemed to take over the whole left side of the gateway, the wood and tendrils seeming to have a life of their own. The boy had his whole body basically plastered to the wood...

Pursing her lips into some thin expression, Bea knelt down next to the boy, the cold stone seeping through her skirt and into her black stockings. She shivered. Perhaps she should have dressed warmer. Although it was stone and was perpetually cold anyway. Especially this late in the day. She glanced at the boy. He looked like a first year, perhaps a second year? She took in his robes, noticing the house crest. Slytherin Which was surprising since she was sure it would be Gryffindor being this silly just as dinner was happening.

It was then though she heard the squeak coming from the boys hands. "What is it?!" The judgement from earlier forgotten, Beatrice's eyes darting to find what animal the boy had discovered eclipsing all thoughts about how stupid rolling around in dirt could be.

Colin heard a voice. Questioning. A Scottish voice! "What are you doing?"

"Urk!" he managed to reply. He didn't want to get caught hunting. Again! He twisted himself about so he could face whatever foe was coming at him --- *crackk!* --- Colin felt the snap of dead wood and found himself wedged firmly between the thick vine, the tree, and the stone wall. His right arm stuck out from the leaves and a wee green tail or something stuck out between his fingers and waggled at him.

She knelt down to watch him. He couldn't very well tell her he was hunting a mouse! "Ummm --- I was just, you know --- evading capture? I mean, what with the Liche King attacking the castle and all, and it's it just me and my gryffin warriors over yonder," he nodded towards the fountain and its big stone statues; "and it was all I could do to escape! There were so many of them, the Hosts of the Dead! You can help me fight them if you like?"

Colin tried to shift his position. "But, um, I'm a bit stuck. One of the Liche King's evil warlocks put a spell on me and trapped me in this forest!" He nodded around at the dense network of trees and vines in the corner of the Courtyard.

"And then I --- " Colin let out a squeak as the thing in his hand tickled his palm! A wee greenish and blue birdie emerged from the clutches of his fingers. It turned its head about to regard Colin's predicament and the girl's observation. Colin drew a surprised breath! The blue tit rolled its eyes and squeaked at Colin! Students! it seemed to say.

It hopped up onto Colin's knuckle where he could no longer reach it, then again up into his hair! There it sat chittering into Colin's ear, poking him with its beak, as if scolding him to hunt somewhere else!

Colin laughed! "A blue tit! Those are wonderful wee folk!"

It was all Bea could do to not flinch when she heard the crack of wood. It seemed the tough vines weren't as tough as the boy thought!

Bea's face pinched in concern. "Ur ye hurt? " It would would be just her luck to see go to the infirmary and find Mister Brumby, or really any Professor. She had yet to actually visit the infirmary at this point in the year. It would be easy enough to do though, she mused, as most Professors would be at dinner in the Great Hall.

The boy was sputtering nonsense about the Lich King and gryffins and the like. Bea really had no idea what he was on about! Maybe it was a muggle thing? Her parents didn't really talk about muggle things like this boy was doing. She didn't think even Nan would know what he was on about, and she had married a muggle!

Confusion even more evident, she huffed out a breath. "Fit ur ye on aboot? Ur talkin' nonsense..." She shook her head, reaching for the boys arm and trying to find a way to pull his arm out. It was wedged good and proper and she bit her lip. Maybe she should go get one of the Professors...

It was then, as the boy wiggled is hand that she saw a flash of green. "Urghh!" Bea stumbled back, landing on her bottom. Eyes wide as the creature hopped from the boys hand, up his arm to his shoulders, all the whilst chittering on to the two humans as if to say, find another place to play your games! Bea let out a laugh!

It was then she heard her companion laugh and tell her it was a some type of bird. With that, she turned to the boy again, getting up to sit on her haunches. "Av niver sin yin so close!" She marveled at the tiny creature, imagining it would spit and shake its head at them any minute now for disturbing its peace. She knew it couldn't but still, a funny image to be sure.

In wonder she reached out a hand to touch the creature. It apparently didn't like that, whipping its sharp baeak in front of her hand, warning her off. Bea made a noise something to that of astonishment and disappointment mixed in one, withdrawing her hand at the last minute. She looked to the boy. "Looks lek ye made a new freend." She smiled. "Am Beatrice."

Colin thought about moaning and carrying on dramatically in the throes of agony --- but even from the weird angle he was looking up from, he could see that this girl would abide no nonsense of any kind.

"No. Am awrite, lass. Unngh." He had to try one wee groan!

And then she started in about what he was talking about! "Nonsense? Whisht thoo --- whit nonsense ---?" And then she tried yanking his arm off. "Lass! Gie us a yank o the foot; ma airm is stickit fest!" And that's when the bowtruckled decided to climb out of his hand, and the girl let go, which sent him sliding back towards the wall --- but at least she'd gotten him unstuck!

She seemed fascinated by the tiny bird, saying she'd never seen one before. Colin had seen them plenty of times before! Not that he was looking for blue tits or anything, but, well, a young hunter is bound to come across some interesting creatures while searching for a tasty snack! The birdie seemed happier now that Colin was lying still. It scampered up onto his brow and looked into his eye. "Thoo're a brawlike wee bridie!" It poked his eyebrow curiously.

Then the bird looked up beyond Colin's head, scampered over towards Colin's ear and started poking and pulling on it! "Ow! Hes yankin ma ear off o ma heid!" What with this crazy girl yanking him one way before and now the blue tit pulling him back the other way, Colin found himself in a right pickle!

And then he saw them! Two eyes reflecting in the dim under the thick leaves. "Oh, lassie! I ken the bather een nou! Gleik thare awey! Some ither body's roant cat oot huntin fer wee bridies!" He nodded in the direction of the undergrowth. Colin reached the finger of his free left hand up to stroke the bird. "Alright, lad, we'll take care of that mean old tomcat!"

Colin stared into the cat's eyes and said: "Rrrrrrl! Yauf! Yauf!" And the tomcat nearly leapt out of its skin for pure indignation! Never before had a human growled and chuffed at it like some wild canine! It hissed at Colin, mostly, he thought, just to save face, but it turned and scampered out from the undergrowth and dashed across the Courtyard before seeking some way to get back to the safety of its owner's cosy dorm. "A howp that wisna thines cattie, lass!"

The girl tried to reach over to the bird to touch it, but the creature wouldn't have any of it and it pecked at her outstretched hand. She seemed disappointed, but said that he'd gotten himself a new friend.

It was with some difficulty that Colin was able to extricate himself from the clutches of the Liche King's bonds, and with Beatrice pulling on one of his legs they made short work of it.

Colin sat back against the stone wall. His robe had a tear and his shirt and kilt were grubby and had bits of leaf and twig all over. There was a bit of vine sticking out of one shoe and his hair was full of leaves. Apparently he'd disturbed a nest of ants, for his head was now crawling with the little buggers. As Colin tried to itch, the blue tit kept flicking his fingers away. It seemed to like Colin's fresh ant carry-out service! As he sat, two more birds leapt down onto his head to help their branchmate feast on the ants.

The girl had introduced herself as Beatrice. Colin couldn't help but laugh at his predicament: "Am Colin! Am from the northwest Highlands. Whit aboot thoo? And whits this 'nonsense' thoos bletherin aboot thereanent?"

The boy, who even with all her pulling and helping, seemed to be stuck. The vines had a tight grasp on the boys arm. Luckily for him, the bird really didn't seem to mind, flying up and over the boys arm to his head. It seemed to like the resting place, until it pulled on human ears! "Ooh, stop it!" She tried shooing the creature from the boys head.

Rolling her eyes at the nonsense comment, it was then she noticed the glaring eyes of the cat that the boy pointed out. Now that creature definitely didn't seem friendly! No wonder the mouse seemed to like the boy! The boy hissed at the cat, and the returning hiss made Bea think of two animals getting ready to fight. She bit her lip, hoping it wouldn't come to that. "Nae, that isna ma kitty. Guid job!" She smiled as the cat ran across the courtyard into the castle.

It was then though as the adrenaline high from the cat-scapade came down that she noticed the boy was still stuck. Grabbing the boys leg as instructed before, she yanked, setting him free. Propping him and herself against the wall, she looked down at them both. The boy was an absolute mess as her Ma would say. Dirt and leaves stuck to him everywhere. He even had a piece of vine sticking out of his shoe! She wasn't much better. She grimaced. Her skirt and jumper had dirt smeared all over from kneeling in the dirt and pulling the boy free. Her stockings had a slight hole in them too. She sighed. The house elves were going to be busy tomorrow. Dusting her brown, dirt-smeared hands off, she smiled slightly at the boy.

It was in that instant more birds arrived. It seemed that the still unnamed boy had gotten something in his hair, and all three creature found it interesting. "Ooh!" Bea let out a cry of astonishment. This day kept getting better and better! The boy laughed at the situation and Bea couldn't help but join in. "Nice tae meet ye Colin! A'm frae 'e North East, near Ellon." She glanced at his head again, the birds seeming to finish of whatever was on Colin's head and disappearing back into the vines, if only for the time being. "A'm talkin aboot the blether on Liche Kings and gryffin warriors...Are you playin' a gemm or just daft...?" She really wasn't sure. Maybe it was a muggle thing?
