It was just after curfew, when every child had to be in their dormitories for at least ten minutes by now. At that time a figure of average height made its way over the corridor of the basement, the Potions classroom his final destination for this beautiful evening. The sun was about to give space for the moon, who would dip the night sky in a gentle light only supported by the stars above their heads.
The figure was wearing black robes with a hood pulled over his head, just in case someone besides the Deputy Headmaster would appear and may be able to identify him. That would end up disastrous. Reaching the Potions Classroom, he reached out for the doorknob, wrapping his thin fingers around it. He could hear a faint clicking sound, after he muttered the password and with a slight smirk he pushed open the door, slipping into the pitch black classroom. He closed the door behind him and only then drew his wand and muttered the familiar "Lumos". He only was professor since a short while, but lived in the castle for way longer, for a few years already. He was barely seen, making people think he maybe was only a guest that came by from time to time, while in reality he barely left the castle at all.

Looking around in the empty classroom, he began to walk through the rows of seats until he reached another door behind the professor's desk. Fainauriel as he was told, since rumours spread fast. He had not talked to the man yet and did not care the slightest to change that. Halting infront of the second door he muttered another pair of words, totally unrelated to the previous ones besides that they were both passwords that would gain him entry to rooms that were normally warded.
Again there was the clicking sound, that indicated another successful entry as he pushed open the door, that lead into a storage room. His eyes quickly got used to only little of light his wand was giving, as he stepped towards the shelves. He left the ingredients alone, only pacing the shelves with various bottled up potions in vials and small flasks. He wandered around until he saw the one he was most familiar with.

Thurston took a glance around the room, his senses on high alert, as he reached out for a vial with a bluish liquid in it. He gently shook the vial to proof the potions viscosity so he would not steal one that was spoiled or stored for too long. Seeing the liquid was perfect in substance and colour, he smirked slightly.

§ It was a quiet evening, painfully insipid even. It was past curfew and I had every intention of turning in for the night, my rest a necessity, if I am to wake in the morning and go through the day with the amount of vim demanded of someone of my high standards. But alas, all my hopes and dreams would become a non-event as my elven ears perked up at the muffled sound of approaching footsteps. Three thoughts came to mind in almost successive fashion, the first being that no student would be brave enough to venture into the dungeons at this time of the night, even if they were daring enough to leave their common rooms after curfew. The second was that it must have been a member of staff or possibly a Prefect on patrol. The third was far more sinister. I didn't have long to consider when I heard a fugacious whisper at the door to my classroom.

§ Quickly, silently, I hid in a particularly dark corner of the unlit classroom. My elven eyes were used to the dark, though perfect vision was not on my regime. I could see enough though to notice the hooded figure that entered, and when they cast the wand-lighting charm I shrank, literally, assuming the form of one of the small female students I taught. This was done in an attempt to undermine my own height and thus, making me a smaller target to see. Veiled in perfect silence, I watched the figure approach my storeroom unremittingly, indicating to me that they were after something particular. The sibilant mutterings did not sit well with me, and the ease with which the stranger was able to circumvent my wards cast suspicion on several shady figures I had seen in passing since arriving at this school.

§ My approach was silent, and I stood in the doorway watching, waiting to see what the figure intended. Once I saw the bottle of purple liquid being pilfered, a quick thought occurred to me, but I refrained from voicing my suspicions just yet, wanting an explanation before all else. "Mayhaps I could interest you in a lesson on phantasmology, thief?" The voice was similar to that of an imperious prepubescent girl demanding a pony for her birthday, but the archaic speech pattern was far beyond her years. "Your wanderlust does not interest me in the least, though I am interested in what exactly you plan to do with that." I pointed lazily at the purple draught. "Ten seconds. That's all the time I'll deign to spend listening to whatever paltry excuse you can come up with." My arms folded and my gaze and breath steady, I started the mental countdown.

Thurston looked at the vial with the potion for a small amount of time, as he continued to gently shake it, until he heard some shuffling of clothes behind him. His heightened senses quickly picking up the sound, that he had only noticed now. He froze, the ingredients in the storage room preventing for him to rely on his sense of scents.

Soon he was able to hear a voice that fitted a teenage girl perfectly, maybe even slightly younger. He vaguely guessed that person had to be either a first or a second year, as the voice sounded immature and squeaky. Surprisingly it seemed as if the girl had swallowed a dictionary as her wording and mellow way speaking made her sound a lot more experienced.

He slowly turned around, after he had pocketed the small vial into his robes, so that the girl would not be able to see it, he raised an eyebrow suspiciously.
"Are you not supposed to be in your dormitories already?" He asked her whilst looking down.
"It would be most easy to tell me your house and name, you should not be in here - I wonder what the professor would say, seeing you here." He added with a confident smirk.

She would not be aware, that he was not allowed to be here either. While he for sure could tell, that a student was not supposed to be in this place at this time or without the professor being present.

§ "What are you going on about you old coot?" I hadn't even noticed that I was still in the form that I had taken moments ago. All it took was a critical glance at his victorious smirk and a subsequent gander at my own miniature stature to recall that who he was currently seeing before him was someone besides the Potions Professor. Deciding to press the mystery further, I maintained this form and began to formulate a professional lie, one that came as easily as my abilities as a top actor allowed. "Then I guess I'm super lucky I'm Professor Valtome's aide huh?" If I was going to maintain the subterfuge, I would have to sound the part of a little girl with regards to verbiage and inflection.

§ "He left me alone to lock up the classroom tonight because he had boring adult stuff to do. But you" I took a confrontational step towards the man, staring up at him with as exasperated an expression as I could manage. "shouldn't. Be. Here. Put back whatever you just took and we'll pretend nothing ever happened. Professor Valtome doesn't like thieves, so I'm doing you a favor old man." I was still firmly in position between the man and the door, barring his exit while I confronted him. Short of violently pushing me out of the way, which would be exceedingly cruel for an adult to do to an eleven-year-old, he would have to do as I say before I allowed him to leave. I could just hope that the man is smarter than he looks and will listen to reason.

Thurston stared at the young girl and again raised an eyebrow in suspicion at the sudden change in behavior. That girl suddenly spoke as if she was her own age, instead of her earlier mature wording, now she had an immature and brattier attitude. Well she had been a brat earlier as well, as she tried to play brave, but now she just sounded like the child she was.
”I highly doubt, that you are the professor’s aide. From what I heard his attitude would prevent him from accepting help by none other but himself.” He stared at the young student. ”And even if you were his aide, that would give you no excuse to wander around after curfew. No matter what, you will be in trouble if you will not let me through.”

Thurston was not impressed at all, when the small girl stepped towards him. She was a lot smaller than him and her delicate figure was not helping her to impress at all. He knew that he could not just walk past her, since he would get in trouble for pushing past a student, even though she was a brat, but he did not want to lose his position for frightening a student.
”Furthermore I do not know, who planted the thought into your mind, that I am a thief, but I have more right to be in this room, at this time, than you do!”

§ The man was a tough nut to crack. Did he simply choose to believe whatever thought came to mind or was he just that slow? Whatever the case may be, nothing he said did anything to assuage my suspicions, and the fact that he was trying to deflect and steer the conversation away from the meat of the matter was more than enough to convince me that this little charade of mine would get me nowhere. Quite frankly, I did not care for the theatrics at this moment either, for if there was one thing I absolutely despised, it was thieves. Dishonorable thieves at that. The kind that didn't have the common decency to own up to what they truly were.

§ "Is that so?" I said after he mentioned having more of a right to be in the Potions Storeroom than I do. I took my time with the transformation, allowing each defining facet of the girl's form to shift one after the other, the final aspect being the eyes. I was now standing before the man in my own glorious form, smirking at him condescendingly. "You were saying?" It couldn't be helped. My natural instinct dictated that I gloat even slightly, but that was neither here nor there. He had still revealed nothing and his silence only served to make me far angrier than I wanted to be, but as was my wont, I didn't show it.

§ "Let us cut to the chase, whoever you are. It is quite axiomatic that you've stolen something from me, and I intend to see it returned in short order." Obviously we could not have a brawl inside the storeroom, as everything in here was far too valuable, but should the stranger wish to test me further then I would have no qualms about defending what was mine. I'm sure Deputy Headmaster Blackburn would love to learn that his school was nowhere near as formidable as everyone thought it was, especially considering that someone had so easily stolen away in the middle of the night to enter the storeroom and take what did not belong to them.

§ "I am not an unforgiving soul. Tell me who you are, why it is that you need that particular potion, and how it was that you managed to get past my wards. Obviously, you must have had some help. All I ask for is a name." As I said this, I took the few backward steps that brought me back to the main classroom and out of the Potions Storeroom that doubled as my office. I didn't allow enough room for the stranger to try and slip past me, but I wanted him out of there so that if he did try anything I was free to do whatever I could to defend myself. As of now, I had yet to even catch so much as a glimpse of his face, but there was something off about him. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on.

He could see that the girl grew more and more frustrated with every second that passed while he refused to give her his reasoning. He just wanted her to vanish, but knew he would get in trouble for it afterwards. He still remained calm though as he tried to figure out the small girl. Why was she here and demanded answers of him? There was no way at all that she really was the side of the current Potions professor, as he clearly heard rumours of that guy, who thought of himself no less than perfect. He would never let someone help him with his job, his pride would not allow him to do so.

It took him by surprise when after the question was asked, the girl's body began to change. It seemed to stretch itself in length and adapted the build until it fit the one of a young man. A young man with pointed ears and a clearly unamused expression. It just took mere seconds for Thurston to figure out, whom he was standing infront of and when he did, he just stared at the half elf for a short period of time, before he sighed, getting annoyed himself by now.

For the first, it clearly annoyed him that he had not saw through the Potions professor's abilities, as he was distracted by the surrounding of many potions and potion ingredients. But he was also annoyed, because the professor would clearly not let him go before he either got the vial with the potion back, or got a good enough explanation as to why he took it.

Without any further comment he pulled down his hood and revealed his face to the unknowing professor and stared blankly at him.
"Even though you may not know about this, I do have the permission to enter this room. Not only by the previous Potioneer that worked here, but also because of someone else." He stared at the professor for a while, trying to judge his reaction.

Just wanted to annoy the man a bit further, he raised an eyebrow again. This time in an amused gestic.
"Is it really necessary to ask why I took this potion? I am sure you saw it and as a Potioneer, well if you are a good one, you should be able to know it's purpose at first glance." he gave a slight smirk.

§ As soon as the man reached for his cloak and made a move to pull it away, the anticipation in my eyes could no longer be masked. I maintained a sharp gaze as I waited for the big reveal, only to find that I was just as unamused as I was before I saw the shock of russet hair and the youthful face it belonged to. Talk about anticlimactic. Some part of me had been expecting a known figure that I could declare my schadenfreude at catching them in the act of grand theft. How utterly pedestrian this non-turn of events was.

§ At the manchild's remark revealing the truth behind these 'permissions' that he had been granted by not one, but two figures, my head started to spin and my substantial impulse to offer a riposte was being held onto by a measly thread. Instead, I held the man's gaze uncomfortably, eyeing him as I would an ant; like he was lower than the dirt beneath my shoes. Raising my eyebrows and looking skyward, I placed a slender finger to my lips and tapped gently, seemingly lost in thought. "The last Potioneer? You mean to tell me that my forerunner actually allowed such speck to enter her sanctum sanctorum, unannounced in likeness to a thief in the night?" I entertained the thought for a moment and shook my head, my thoughts unfettered.

§ "A mighty fine good thing it is that they enlisted me when they did. A while longer and she might have further sanctioned the meteoric declivity of this Potions classroom to infamy." That is to say, for all those to whom my locutions may flummox, I'm happy they got rid of her when they did. "I don't suppose you're feeling very...telling at the moment so as to regale me of who this other shadowy figure with the power to grant such permissions may be?" Whether he told me or not, I would find out eventually. It was only a matter of time. Now onto things of actual importance; the potion that he had stolen along with his chutzpah in doubting my skill as a Potioneer.

§ If he wanted me to postulate then I would happily oblige. "Wolfsbane. Your proficiency in circumventing the magical wards. Your direct path to the storeroom and the exact location of the potion; nary a glance at anything else. Your revelatory statement as to the two permissive forces that have given you this all-access pass at wee hours of the night to come and steal...no. Borrow said Wolfsbane. Not to mention the fact that you've clearly done this before." Did I cover everything? I dare say I did. All of it brought me to one conclusion, and it was one deduction that had me swallowing worry, a slight semblance of it, as I said the word. "Werewolf." It was not so farfetched to believe that there was a werewolf present at Hogwarts. After all, I was an elf, well, half-elf at the least, and here I was teaching an entire class.

§ "I didn't quite catch your name." It was best to know who he was at the very least. "Explain. I wish to know the meaning of this." I would not let him leave until I understood why he was here. Not in the classroom committing theft, but the school itself. Surely the previous Potions Master must have known of the danger such a beast presented to the students, and yet she had kept his secret, even abetted his many ventures into the storeroom to retrieve the Wolfsbane Potion. There was far more to the story than I knew.

Thurston stared at the elven boy in front of him, well elven man. It secretly bugged him that he towered over him, looking down at him figuratively and literally. It was just by a couple of inches, but it probably still was enough to give that elf some kind of satisfaction. It also annoyed him, that he was treated as if he was not good enough to be in that guys presence. He hid his feeling well though, he always did. Always keeping his seemingly bored expression, whenever there was no sky involved.

In return he took some satisfaction in the potioneers shock that he was allowed to enter his holy space and even was allowed to take the potion without having to ask for his permission first. ”Were you not supposed to brew a batch of this potion each month? Seems you now know why that is so” he said with a bored out voice. He wanted this to be done with. He would not need this man to steal more of his time than necessary.
He listened closely to the other as he gathered his information and finally came to the right conclusion. He could not help a slightly pained smile that tugged on his lips; it was small but probably still noticeable in the dim light his wand was giving. He did not give an answer though, but no answer should be enough answer for the person in front of him. A thought rushed through his mind, to shove past the one trapping him inside the storeroom and leaving him behind. He quickly forgot his thoughts as this would just make it worse.

”Barclay. Professor Barclay…” he muttered. He raised an eyebrow at the command to explain the situation. ”Why don’t you find out yourself? I am on patrol duty today, so if you would kindly let me go?” he said with a hint of amusement. He could not keep him here knowing, that he had a duty to fulfill. Right? That it was a lie, would not be noticed.

§Silence, by all means, was to be taken as consent, and the man's silence was practically screaming at me as he refused to give any kind of affirmative response to my assumption. I must say that it all made a lot more sense now that I gave it some thought myself. Either he himself was the creature I had named, or he was on the hunt for someone else with the affliction. Whatever the case might have been, the fact remained that I had not been informed of it, and now I had to suffer the embarrassment of seeming like an unlearned simpleton before a colleague, one that obviously knew me, but that I had not yet had the displeasure of meeting before now. Maybe it was time to venture out into the school and say 'hi' to some of these people that I am to work with...

§ Just as he had decided that mum's the word upon my assumption, I too remained tight-lipped upon his chiding remark about being told to prepare a batch of the potion each month. Since we were keeping secrets and all, he'd learn that I was not someone to contend with. Deciding then and there that I would say as little as possible to the man, I weighed my words against my thoughts and decided carefully on what I would say from what would remain only a notion. The man's semblance of an introduction, late as it may be, and his subsequent jest claiming to be on patrol made me wish beyond wishes that he would at least have the common decency to not lie to me with regard to something so inconsequential. The truth, after all, was all I asked for. How sad it must be to have to lie about what you truly were, especially when you turn into something so ghastly once a month.

§ "Mr. Barclay...," as he would now and forever be known, "do take care next time you enter this segment of the castle. I am a stickler for first impressions, and I must say your level of decorum this eventide was found...wanting." I rendered him a hard stare as I allowed my words to sink in. If his plan was to make an enemy of me then I must say he was gaining ground in that regard rather quickly. I would not be made a fool of inside my own classroom, nor anywhere else for that matter. Mr. Barclay could rest assured that I would be getting to the bottom of this, with or without his help. Mr. Blackburn himself was at fault in this instance as well, for I had been given the aforementioned directive, but never enlightened as to why, though it only took some basic guesswork to arrive at the conclusion.

§ Even now I found myself casting much suspicion on Ms. Ethel as I considered the state of affairs. There was so much that needed to be questioned. Satisfied just enough in the thought that my warning had gotten through to the man with the russet coloured hair, I took one long step aside and gestured with a flair and a delicate bow toward the exit, wishing for the man to leave my presence. It had become an exhausting chore engaging in such pointless banter, and should I never see this man again it would be far too soon. "Do have yourself a wonderful evening, Mr. Barclay. And remember that we are neither animals nor barbarians." I was sure to place extra emphasis on the animals. "Send word beforehand or even knock the next time you wish to take from me. I will be more than happy to oblige." A good day to you.
