backdate. Christmas break.

Saying that Edmund wasn't in a good mood was an understatement.

This was the first time he spent Christmas by himself and it hadn't been on his plans in the first place. He was counting on going home, seeing Granny and his father, and the rest of the family - maybe even his mother, but it would be too perfect, wouldn't it? Yeah.

His father had practice and an important game in Spain, so he wouldn't be home for the holiday, choosing to celebrate with his teammates. Granny couldn't be alone, so she went to France to stay with Aunt Persephone and her new boyfriend, Jeanluc. They didn't have house-elves anymore, thanks to his mother's liberal influence over them, so even if he insisted on going home and, for some reason, Granny allowed it, he still experience the same heart-wrenching loneliness and bitterness as now.

At least, some of his friends were still at Hogwarts, so Edmund wasn't wandering an empty Gryffindor common room most of the time.

After breakfast, he decided to go to the Library and study. The place felt dead at the moment, and awfully cold too. It could be considered boring by most, but he genuinely had fun studying now. He lost focus and had to reread pages over and over again, but it was time-consuming, and for someone with as much free time as him, it was perfect. He found a thick book on Castelobruxo, the South American wizarding school, and made his way back to the tables.

However, as he had opened the book and began reading the introduction, he accidentally. bumped into someone.

"Watch it," He grumbled under his breath, before scoffing at them. Edmund didn't have the time, nor patience to be nice to others today. If he was meant to be alone for Christmas, he'd made sure to stay that way.

a splash of cold water to her face—a spot of zero in the tumultuous flood of magical activity that drowned her year in its current. Now it was the winter holidays and it was her mother's fault. It was because of her mother. It was because of her mother that Mari had to stay behind, had to spend her first Christmas away from home... to study. Mari's mother had her stay at Hogwarts to study and if Mari was any other kid she would have felt upset, or abandon but she wasn't any other kid and she knew her mother. Her mother was a strict woman.

Christmas wasn't something special to her or something that she looked forwards to, and it wasn't because of some religious beliefs, or anything that had to do with her culture. It was because her celebrating Christmas meant that she met her mother's expectations, and since she did well so far she should expect some kind of art supplies to be delivered to her.

Mari had ditched her gold-rimed glasses, she was getting tired of them fogging up due to the chilled air, leaving them in her dorm room, and opted to wear her contact lenses. It was strange to be in Hogwarts and not cringe from the loudness of other students, it was strange walking down the empty halls and only seeing one or two students lingering in some corner, talking amongst themselves.

Mari buried her face into the bright red scarf around her neck. she was always more susceptible to the cold than others. Her fragility to the cold was one of the reasons why she left her freezing dorm, and she had some books that need to be returned to the library. It was a struggle walking to the library with an arm full of heavy textbooks.

It was warm in the library. Mari left the stack of books on the librarian's counter, she walked over to the bookshelves, she already had three books in one arm and a few scrolls in the other. Mari stumbled forwards, letting out a surprised yelp. The books falling from her arms and the scrolls crumbling in her attempt at acting them.

“ Watch It.” She heard a boy sneer. Mari looked up at the retreating boys back. He bumped into her! That boy had the nerve, she want in his way, he was in hers. Mari's mind was moving too fast and too slow all at the same time. mother was right, she thought. Her mother was right people would always look down on her even if they don't know her. she was angry, she felt her brown freckled face skin get hot. Anger burned in light gray eyes.

“ I guess your parents didn't teach you about manners.” Mari spat, jumping up to her feet and stepping over the books that were still on the floor with the now-forgotten and slightly crinkled scrolls. she grabbed onto the boy's wrist “ Apologise now.” She demanded.

The girl's books fell to the floor, and he had no intention to help her out. Edmund wanted to go back to his common room and stay there, cuddling near the fireplace, accompanied by the comforting sound of fire and the pages he flipped. Before he could leave the Library, paying no mind to the girl's comments about his parents, however, she grabbed his wrist, keeping him in place.

He stopped, face cold, not in the mood. Usually, he loved physical contact - he was always finding ways to get closer to people he cared about. He'd run to Granny's arms all the time, or poke his father's ribs to get his attention, rest his chin on Olivia's shoulder, taking advantage of his height. Right now, though, he didn't want any of that.

Then, the girl demanded he apologized, and he pressed his lips together to restrain a laugh. Apologizing wasn't in his vocabulary, even when he was wrong. It was true he had bumped into her and should have been more careful, but she could have been paying attention, too, you know.

"No," said Edmund, twisting his wrists and yanking it out of the girl's gasp, with another scoff. "Just watch where you're going next time,"

“ Me? Watch where I'm going?” Mariposa almost laughed at the audacity that the boy had. Just who does he thinks that he is? He bumped into her, and he had the nerve to play the victim. He was probably some arrogant boy who always had gotten his way. Not this time Mari thought.

“ And unless you think that I can grow eyes in the back of my head, you need to apologize.” Mari stepped in front of the boy she wasn't going to let him leave until she got him to apologize. She got a good look at his face and she noticed that he didn't look like any of the Slytherin first years- or any Slytherin for that matter. Mari was good with remembering faces, it was names that she had difficulty remembering.

The boy looked to be a first-year like her but she didn't care, whoever this boy was she knew that he wasn't in her house.

Mari noticed the book the boy was holding, and her giving into impulsive thoughts, took it. What she did was very unladylike and her mother if was here to witness what her daughter did the women would be furious, but Mari's mother wasn't here. So Mari snatched the heavy book from the boy with more force than needed. she read the tilted of the book she stole, Castelobruxo, the wizarding school in South America. An idea popped in her head and she smiled brightly.

“ This is the book I needed for my studies!” Mari lied she read this book days before, it was a good read.

“You're such a sweetheart, even though you're parents must be so busy that they never taught you basic manners.” Mari pouted holding the book close to her chest, faking a sad look. She shook her head and whipped the corners of her eyes, drying tears that were never there, to begin with. She was putting on a show of concern, she was mocking the boy in the only way she know-how to, with sweet smiles and faux tears.

“It's such a pity to see lonely children such as yourself, misbehave because they didn't get enough love.” She made a sound of disappointment and shook her head, Mariposa walked over to the abandoned pile of books, she bend down started to pick them up. Once Mari rose to her feet the books weighed heavy in her arms, she turned to the boy, giving him a closed-eyed smile.

“ I'm lucky to have a mom I can go home to anytime I want,”
Mari said softly. It was a lie if she went home her mother would be angry with her and she'll spend the rest of Christmas break locked in her room, studying.

“But I guess you won't know anything about that, huh? ” She added with a sickly sweet smile. It was obvious that she was mocking the boy, she -for a brief moment wondered if he was smart enough to notice.

Edmund took a second to absorb all that girl had said to him. She had mentioned his mother; his parents - all because he didn't feel like apologizing to her. It irked him that someone would dare to spew things they didn't understand or had the minimum knowledge of about someone else to make themselves feel superior to them.

This girl made his blood boil - with her acting, her mocking smile, her gall. Talking about his mother was a privilege only a few people he knew had. She knew nothing! This girl didn't know him, or his parents, or his past for her to think of something like that. A cold expression covered his face. She was lucky they weren't from the same House, cause if he saw her around the Gryffindor common room, the two of them would be locked up in the detention until the end of their first year.

A sarcastic smirk crept its way into his face, and he tilted his head, yanking the book from her grasp, uncaring if she got hurt or not. It was his. Not hers. He wasn't going to let her leave all confident like that - not when she had touched a nerve.

Edmund shoved his hands in his pockets and walked up to her, using his height to his advantage. At any retaliation that dared to mention his parents again, he knew he'd start crying. He wasn't as strong as he hoped to be, but he could at least pretend. For now.

Nodding, he said, sweet and polite, posh accent making it all better, "Ah, yes, so lucky to have your mommy that you're spending Christmas here, and not with her, huh? Clearly, she doesn't feel lucky to have you," He laughed. "I mean, why would she? You say she taught you basic manners, but because someone didn't do what you want, you bring up their family, which you know nothing about, just to act superior. Wow. Congratulations. Really. If that's basic manners, I'm glad my parents didn't teach me that,"

He took a step back, still smiling - still looking at her like she was the nicest person he had ever met. His expression closed off again and he did a fake bow, playing with the book in his hands, before making his leave.

"Merry Christmas," He told her, bumping their shoulders together again.
Edmund left.
