Secret Breakfast Plans
early october 2021 / with @edmund dempsie
With a slight yawn, Amber set herself down at the Gryffindor table. She had stayed up late, for once, reading a book! Shocker to anyone who knew her, but she had overheard an older student talking about secret passageways so she tried to investigate them herself. She thought reading Hogwarts, A History would have been a good place to start.
Well, to be honest, she didn't get far before falling asleep, so her efforts were wasted.
Ladling some porridge into a bowl and adding honey, she quickly realized that Edmund was sitting opposite her. She nudged him under the table with her foot and gave him a cheeky smile, "Morning sleepyhead." Amber greeted him with a cheeky smile. She waited a moment for her porridge to cool and took the opportunity to braid her hair into the twin plaits she was known for.
Amber wondered if Edmund knew any cool secrets about the castle. After all, he knew a lot about flying so maybe his da had told him something. Picking up her spoon, she gave her porridge a stir before leaning in a bit. When she spoke next she had dropped her voice to a whisper, "Hey, Edmund. Do you know any cool secrets about the castle?"
If there was anyone who she could convince to go exploring with her later today, it would be Edmund. She was fairly certain he wouldn't even mind going at nighttime - which, in Amber's eyes, was definitely the best time to explore a spooky, old, magical castle.

Secret Breakfast Plans
@Amber BullhornOblivious to whatever happened around him, Edmund chugged down his cauldron cake, corners of his mouth dirty as he read Granny's newest letter, where she complained about being unable to celebrate his upcoming 12th anniversary with him, and that she hoped he wasn't alone. He would need to write at least a full page to convince her he wasn't dying of loneliness.
He put the letter down once he was nudged under the table, eyes going up to find Amber, braiding her hair, which made her look even younger. Edmund cleaned his face, flashing her a small smile, before taking a sip of his orange juice. She looked tired, and he wondered if she had gotten a proper amount of his sleep. He wasn't one to talk because he often slept for about 3 to 4 hours in the boys' dormitory, before walking down to the common room and napping by the couch.
At her unexpected question, he beamed, glad that she would ask him of all people. He tilted his head, rambling a bit, "Cool secrets? I think all of Hogwarts' secrets have been discovered, haven't they? I heard about some secret passages, the Room of Requirement, the Chamber of Secrets, the ghosts," He corrected himself with a pause. "Well, the House ghosts aren't really secrets, but Moaning Myrtle could be considered a secret, right? Do you know her? I heard she cries and whines in the girl's bathroom all the time,"

She giggled at the look Edmund gave her when she finally got his attention. She wanted to ask what his letter was about but her Ma had always warned her about being too nosy and letting people have their privacy.
"Eh?! Secret passages? Room of Requirement?! Chamber of WHAT?!" Amber realized belatedly she was getting too loud and she ducked her head down. She ate some of her porridge and hoped students around them weren't going to pay any attention to a first year shouting about something a lot of students already knew about - apparently. She felt completely out of the loop.
Amber let out a huff, "I swear, my Ma and Da have told me nothing about this school!" Luckily she had Edmund here and he was going to be her ticket to all the cool things about this school she wanted to see or discover for herself. "Moaning Myrtle?" She thought about it, tilting her head which meant one braid almost ended up in her porridge.
Fishing the braid out, she looked at Edmund, "There's no ghost in the bathrooms I've used..." Did that mean there was some kind of forbidden bathroom or one that the girl's all avoided? She giggled at the idea of them two of them exploring a girl's bathroom, "Are you sure you're man enough to go into the girl's bathroom with me?" She teased Edmund. Not that she would tease him too much.
If he changed his mind about exploring with her, Amber would be mad at herself.

@Amber BullhornAmber's reaction told him all he needed to know - she didn't know. Anything. This was a magical school, of course, there would be secret passages and new places to discover. Edmund snickered like a fox at her comment on her parents, hoping no one else had heard them talk about that, especially the Prefects.
"You have to read Hogwarts, a History," He said, shaking his head as he feigned disappointment. He went on to explain who Moaning Myrtle was, based on what his cousins and his father had told him, "Yeah. She was a student, just like us, and she was murdered by a sinister creature in the girl's bathroom," He pulled his robe and covered his face, wiggling his hands like a dementor trying to steal Amber's happiness. "She's in the abandoned toiles, on the second floor, or so they say,"
Though his cousins said they had never seen or heard Myrtle, his father confirmed her existence. She was more than silly tales to scare first years students. He hadn't given much thought to her, because he didn't want to enter the girl's bathroom. But given they were abandoned and a girl was going with him, it wouldn't be a problem, would it?
Confident, Edmund shrugged, reaching out to pat Amber's shoulder, teasing, "I'll go. Don't worry. I'll protect you from whatever got Myrtle if they try and take you with them,"

"I tried..." She whined quietly, pouting a little. She didn't want to admit to falling asleep last night while trying to read the book. Amber didn't even know if she had made it past the introduction. Thinking about it, the words were a blur. Nothing had gone into her head. It was, to her, a boring book and not one Amber was going to be able to finish any time soon. How did some people do it? She needed to know their secrets!
Amber's eyes grew wide as Edmund explained about the ghost, "Woah, murdered?! At school?!" Was that something she had to worry about now? Amber didn't like the idea of fighting for her life when she was already having a hard time learning how to brew potions or star charts. "Is the sinister monster dead or is it still in the school...?" Great, not she was going to have nightmares about something big and bad coming after her, chasing her through the corridors.
Still, Edmund was willing to explore with her so Amber was going to jump on that chance, "How about tonight?" She asks in an excited whisper, her worries about whatever evil creature was stalking the halls, already forgotten. Her thoughts were now focused on planning their escape from the common room and the best way to get down to the second floor without getting caught.

@Amber Bullhorn"Murdered," Edmund stated with a nod like it happened every other day in wizarding school.
In an attempt to further scare Amber about the supposed alive and mysterious creature, he looked around and whispered, in a worried tone, as if asking her to keep a secret about this, "We don't know for sure. It might still be alive and looking for food. It hid in the walls and would whisper things to his future victims, so if you're alone and you hear something calling for you, close your eyes,"
Edmund held back the urge to laugh at his own joke, finishing his cauldron cake and shoving Granny's letter in his pocket. Tonight? It sounded perfect. He had always wanted to explore Hogwarts at night, but doing it on his own seemed boring. But now he had someone excited to go along for the ride with him.
They could find a new secret passage or meet Moaning Myrtle. The possibilities were endless - this was Hogwarts, after all. And if they didn't find anything exciting by 2 am, he could try and scare Amber after they entered the toilets.
A sneaky smile made its way onto his face, and his eyes glimmered with mischief, "Deal. I'll see you outside of the abandoned toilets tonight - midnight,"
