So far so good, right?

The obstacles of this race were not as harsh right off the bat compared to the first race of the season. But, for whatever cosmic reason, Ari still managed to hug a few trees. What was it with him and trees? He was starting to dislike them more and more, but he couldn't really stay mad at a tree, could he? After all, they gave him oxygen, so they deserved some appreciation.

He'd just have to find a way to stop running into them. Then he and the trees would be on good terms.

Well, he was aching, bleeding, and crimson stains on his hands were barely fading with the pouring rain. Those wounds were repeatedly renewed by a bash into a branch or entanglement in a thorny patch, small injuries that rendered greater scratches to his ego and knuckles immortal. His teeth were clenched, hands slipping on the handle of his broom but latched for hopefully minutes to come. One hand slid to his wet hair, gliding it over his head where it dangled to block vision, and with squinted eyes and a glance to the opponent beside him, Levi pressed on.

RAVENCLAW v GRYFFINDOR
ROUND TWO
At this point in time there were two leads that stood out ahead of the pack, that of Bloom Silverton from Ravenclaw and Levi Drakos from Gryffindor. These two were pushing their brooms as fast as they could go, and gaining that ground could give either team a win, but with so much more of the course left it was anyone's game right now. The rest of the teams were starting a unit behind, but all of them were certainly still in competition for the lead.

Levi Drakos and Bloom Silverton begin the round here.
The trees were beginning to thin back out again, so there were relatively few injuries. Hugh Lowe managed to bonk his head against a branch in what was quite a spectacular amount of misjudged spacing, and Lin Evanvleck flew a tiny bit too low and managed to scrape their ankle on the thorns that were spread across the unit, their leg now bleeding. Bloom and Levi started off their race here, very slightly ahead of the pack.
UNIT SEVEN
It was pretty clear sailing through the next few units, although one Hugh Lowe would fly close to the ground and swiftly pick up a large rock. Gripping it tightly, he would take a moment to wind up before throwing the rock in Bloom Silverton's direction.

Bloom's Evasion: [d20: 8] + 9 - 5 - 1 = 11

Hugh's aim struck true, as the rock he had selected hit Bloom directly in the back, no doubt causing her quite a bit of pain. It would take more than that to get the Ravenclaw down for good.
Hugh Lowe ends the round here.
UNIT EIGHT
UNIT NINE
After quite the forested area, the racers would hit a similar stretch of calm open fields, although this time many of them were nursing various injuries. Hopefully none of them were too bad, as there were even more obstacles ready to attempt to slow them down once again.

This waterfall proved difficult for many of the racers. With water crashing down as heavy as it was, Della Barfield, Xailah Alptraum, Ari Gwild, & Judith Cohen would slowly loose the grip they held on their brooms, falling and crashing down in the water below. Nicholas McCowan, Levi Drakos, Clair Fernandez, Lin Evanvleck, & Bloom Silverton all managed to make it through unscathed, with Levi and Bloom still fighting for the lead, both pressing onward.
Della Barfield, Xailah Alptraum, Ari Gwild, & Judith Cohen are KOB.
Nicholas McCowan, Clair Fernandez, Lin Evanvleck end the round here.
UNIT ELEVEN
As Bloom & Levi entered the next unit, there almost seemed to be a chill in the air. Something certainly wasn't right here.
BOGGART
Who does the boggart attempt to affect first?
[t!choose Bloom | Levi]
Wisdom DC: 25
Levi: [d20: 2] + 7 = 9

How many rounds is Levi affected?
[d3:1] 1 round
The two could feel the chill in the air as they entered the narrow passageway, however, only one would be considered a true target by the boggart. Levi would quickly fall under the boggarts spell, quickly making a u-turn back into the prior unit, the boggart following closely behind him. He did realize that wasn't the way he was supposed to be going, right? (See 'Unit Ten (Again)' for Levi's next moves)

Bloom seemed unaffected, and so she continued onward.
BLOOM
NARROW PASSAGEWAY [DC = 12]
AF [d10: 7] | [d20: 6] + 13 - 5 = 14
Damage = 0
Bloom made it through the passage behind the waterfall unscathed, leaving what probably felt like a nice break from the rain back into the horrible downpour.
UNIT TWELVE
Looking behind her, Bloom would notice that she was all alone racing through an open field. She would count herself lucky the boggart decided to attack the Gryffindor and not herself, but would she be able to maintain this lead?
Bloom ends the round here.
UNIT TEN (AGAIN)
With Levi making a U-turn racing the wrong way away from his deepest fear, that meant he would have to contend once again with the waterfall.
LEVI
WATERFALL [DC = 20]
[d20: 13] + 5 = 18
KOB
And as Levi raced away from the boggart, back through the waterfall he went, this time with much less precision, now falling down alongside quite a few of his peers into the pool beneath the waterfall below. Luckily this would most likely last the boggart would care for him. Unluckily for everyone else, the boggart would be quite enthralled with its new set of targets all sitting at the bottom of the waterfall.
Levi ends in Unit 10, KOB.
Boggart moved to Unit 10, will select a new target next round.

As Clair went zoomy her mind cleared of any thoughts, and of the guilt she had felt for not being there to see Simon's Race, she still had no idea how it had gone, she hoped Simon was still alive and in one piece. As she zoomed under the waterfall she felt the water hit her head, it made no difference because her outfit (but with longer sleeves) was already soaked, she would just have to zoom on, and try to win this game.

Mentions @Levi Drakos
The rule of the game is to never turn back. But that does stop Bloom? Of course not. Bloom looked back only to see Levi at the same unit as her. Levi was catching up and Bloom felt as though she was slowing down by looking behind. They were now at the same speed with each other. "Come on," Bloom whispered to herself, looking at Levi and then back at what is ahead of her. Luckily, Bloom was too focused on the path that she did not get tempted by the Boggart that was nearby.

As Bloom raced on, little did she know that a rock was going to strike at her back. When the rock struck, she screamed out loud from the pain and looked back to see that it was Hugh Lowe who had most likely made the rock attack her. "REALLY? A FUCKING ROCK?" she screamed back at him. Now Bloom had bruises and a plethora of scrapes from this race and she wondered if all of this was worth it.

Bloom took a deep breath and continued to focus the best she could. She was already in this mess, and she was going to finish it one way or another.

Cat's Grace || Blindvision
The woods were the least of the racers troubles. Most endured a firm thrashing here and there, nothing severe enough to knock them off their brooms. Passing through the conglomeration of plant life was a facile task. It was reasonable to figure, no one had been expecting what lay in wait for them. All the racers would find themselves hovering in front of a roaring mass of... water, water, and more water. They were practically drowning in the stuff. If it wasn't clear; the racers had come upon a waterfall- yes the tall, rumbling, Niagra falls kind- and the only way around it was to go through the thing.

Levi and the girl he was neck and neck with were the first to pass through; which they did so successfully. The same could not be said for some of the students following them. The sheer pressure of the falls was enough to send a majority of the racers plummeting to the muddy ground. Because of the rain, Xailah already lacked a sense for how slick everything had become. To her, everything just felt weird, and wet, and slippery. Flying underneath; she could feel the water from the torrent forcing her fingers away from their place on the broom shaft. It ran fast and cool; slithering between, and underneath her paws, and absorbing into her gloves; effectively loosening her grip.

The next thing she knew, she was on the ground; wading with a few other racers in a mixture of mud, grass, and water. Xailah looked around quickly, her eyes scanning the ground for her broom. She spotted the slender, red stick not too far from where she had landed. A few of the faces with her, caught her eye. Della was noticed nearly immediately, and was hastily approached. "Della?" The elder lioness called to the girl, her voice gentle, and a little warm. It wasn't widely known, but Xailah had a habit of being protective of some of the younger girls she encountered. She had a little sister attending Beauxbatons. So her reaction, while a bit knee jerk, was natural. "Oh dear," the metamorph emitted a flat hum, which was shortly followed by light worry: "are you alright? Nothing broken?" The nursing intern in her immediately began searching for signs of serious injury. Xailahs metallic hues flickered over the smaller girl, giving her a once-over. No bones sticking out- that was a good sign. Nothing was twisted in a way it wasn't meant to be. She deduced that Della looked normal enough, and was therefore most probably alright.

Concern passed over, and dissipated, like a gentle overcast. Xailah took it upon herself to rally her fellow lioness. Did the little lady need it? Probably not. The girl was co-captain after all. "Come on." Xailah waved to the snow-haired child. "If we are swift, we may be able to make up for lost time." She then lugged her own broom out of a shallow pool of water, and shook it off. It was not too long after recovering, she spied a small form flying over head. When it got closer, she was able to recognize it as her teammate Levi. But he had flown through the fall, hadn't he? Yes, that was correct. It would appear that sometime afterwards he had a change of mind, on the direction he was going. Xailah could only stare in bewilderment at the boy. "What is he doing?" Going the wrong way. Obviously. Oh this is just great.

Be it by skill or by the gradual thinning of the woods, Nicholas found himself darting between branches and thorns without fear of being snagged. In time, the Gryffindor broke free from the woods, barely the worse for wear. Levi and Bloom had escaped from the tree line first, and Nicholas could see their forms, one blue and one red, disappear into the waterfall ahead. Gritting his teeth, the captain pushed his broom forward, desperately trying to catch the leaders. Unfortunately, he could not break free from the pack, as almost every racer hit that same waterfall at once. Only Lowe had laid back, once more an improvised projectile in hand.

The thought of the part-giant lobbing that weapon forward caused Nicholas's face to twist into a wolfish smirk. The third year had strength to spare, and that meant that he could deal a significant amount of damage to the unfortunate bird who would be on the receiving end of his blow. Confidence slowly crept into Nicholas's spine as he pushed through the torrent of water.

That confidence evaporated as quickly as it had come when he found himself the only lion to come out the other side. Della and Xailah were nowhere to be seen, only two of the Ravenclaw first years joining him on the other side of the obstacle. The loss of his teammates was a blow, but not an insurmountable one. It was the sight of Levi's panickily flying back into the waterfall that sent Nicholas's stomach plummeting. As the metamorph was cast off his broom, and fell to the water below, Nicholas felt his core join his fellow racer.

All at once, Gryffindor's chances at winning seemingly evaporated. Only Nicholas sat anywhere near the Ravenclaw front runners, alone and outnumbered. Shit.

Della learned her lesson in the forest—her head was still throbbing from that branch—and she expertly avoided any further bumps and bruises. Even better, she missed the sharp thorns hidden at the end of the forest, too.

In the open stretch between the forest and the waterfall, Della kept her eyes on Levi. He successfully passed through the downpour and disappeared. Next, it was her turn, along with her fellow lions, Nick and Xailah. They were neck and neck with a few eagles as well. She braced herself for the weight and wetness to push her down, but something went wrong. She felt her grip slip, and suddenly she was on the ground. She was soaked and disappointed, but her landing was a soft cannonball into the water below, so at least no further bruises.

Della's first instinct was to find her broom. She found Xailah first—great, both of them had fallen! The older girl began to dote over her, making sure Della was in one piece. She blushed with appreciation, "Thanks Xailah, are you good too?" The older lioness seemed equally soaked but still race-ready and unharmed. At least Levi and Nick had made it through the difficult waterfall.

Wait, wasn't that Levi? In the air above them? What was he doing? He was going backward. "Hey, Levi, other way!" Della tried to point him in the right direction, but his expression caught her off guard—did the usually coolheaded boy look scared? Before Della could be certain of what she saw, he hit the waterfall awkwardly, plummeting to the ground next to them with a splash. Della quickly waded over to him. "Levi! Are you alright?"

What made him turn around? Was Nick okay? Hopefully, the remaining airborne lions, their captain and their giant, could make something of this race, but it wasn't going well from where Della was standing.

Lin Evanvleck ✯ First Year
9th April 2021
A short summary of what had just happened. Confident, Lin had flown a little too low and her ankles were bleeding. Not the best thing to happen. Then there was some kind of field. Because of the speed, the first year's scrapes were burning her. When she saw the waterfall, Lin climbed up to make sure she didn't make the same mistake as a few minutes before. Five people were still on their broomsticks and Lin was fortunately one of them.

He'd been a fool to inwardly complain of the heavy rain, the minute burden it put in the dips of his shoulders. Brushing through the waterfall the first time had been both a taste of the weather times a thousand, and a sense of peace. For a second, the crowd and the rest of the world were muffled by crashing water, fogged vision and slipping hands, clean of blood. It passed too quickly. All at once, that deep, soothing note was again replaced with the discordant drops of rain clicking on the handle of his broom, but Levi still pushed forward.

Until, well, he didn't. Dread set in, a familiar feeling that rippled through his veins, so similar to his back pressed against the dungeon wall, a teasing but prickly touch threatening the pristine surface of his skin. He went back, trapped in that grasp again. Merged with the rain were beads of sweat on his forehead despite the cool air and icy water. The stages of grief washed over the brunet again in rapid succession, mourning the loss of something greater than a girl. He was barely conscious when he'd turned and raced back toward the only taste of serenity he'd had in the past months, and he plummeted into its crystal blue abyss without so much as a scream.
