A band-aid for the past

"Come, there is something you need to know." It was a piece of information long due to divulge on her cousin. With days spent, the two caught up on the few years of what felt like a lifetime ago since she'd last been to the Mirador manor. They both grew, yet Aurelia couldn't see Draven anymore than the chubby little prankster running about the hallways in the large mansion.
"Somewhere more reserved, I'll tell you when we get there." Those were her last words for a short span of a few minutes as she silently lead them up, the pattering of soft footsteps echoing through the stairwell. The silence brought on an air of noticeable tension between the older girl and the younger boy, one that was to be acknowledged very soon.
Turning, they would reach the study room. Aurelia took her seat, gesturing for Draven to do the same. She would break the silence with her tone hushed and words slowed, set for only the dark-haired boy to hear. "Hadrian Zuheir. Is my betrothed. " Finally, the bomb dropped, but by luck, they weren't always to detonate.
Then as if she said something wrong, her voice rose a slight octave higher as if to cover up her mistake. "I assumed my parents would have at least shared it with Abbad- Mr. Mirador, but it makes sense that -" Aurelia swallowed. She was the reason why the Bezuidenhouts never kept in touch with the Miradors, the reason why they ceased contact in the first place when both families had been knit tight. The reason why she couldn't come to Draven's aid in a dreadful time of grief, especially as a young boy, how lonely he must have been.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there." For him, and especially for her. If only they could turn back time, she'd hide them better and the Bezuidenhout matriarch wouldn't have found those letters from Iris. "T-they wouldn't let me." The once assertive voice now wobbled, threatening to spill the sentiments which she thought she had long detached from. Yet the scent she wore, a concoction of lavender, camomile and that so distinct hint of lemongrass that was Iris'. A bottle gifted which she poured little by little into her own, in a hopeless desire that it may never run out.

| ─── | "Oh my god do you hear that?" Draven asked, his fingers digging into Aurelia's arm as he dragged her closer, pulling her down so she could listen. "It's the sound of no one having asked for your opinion." He let go off the shorter girl, swatting the dust out of his robes. It was the third time she'd knocked him over as a greeting, and his patience was slowly growing thinner. If this was a trend that would keep up, he'd be so covered in bruises by the end of the year his mother would grab a harpoon and hunt her down.
Draven wasn't sure why he'd though if he waited long enough, hearing Iris' name would have gotten easier. People told him time healed. But it didn't, not really. It made him bitter. It reminded him that he could have been sitting beside her at the Slytherin table, and snuck into her dorm at night. It reminded him of all the places she'd promises to take him once he arrived at Hogwarts. Of all the foods she'd threatened to forcefeed him, if he didn't try them by himself. Draven took a step back from Aurelia, least he'd send her tumbling in the bowl of punch on the Ravenclaw table, and owe her a new robe. "Well she's not here, now is she" he growled, ignoring the sharp pain he felt building up in his throat, and watching her as she scrawled her name onto a sliver of paper. She had some nerve, signing up right after she'd told him not to. "Who's Hadrian?" A blur of motion followed. Blind accusations and getting strung along, out of the Great Hall and into a forgotten classroom.
At the end of the day, Draven wouldn't be sure why he forgot how to breathe. But sometime within the past three seconds, air had taken on the consistency of plasma, a sharp pain making itself known in the young boy's chest.
Iris was gone. Truly and completely gone. For everyone but him. Draven took a step back from Aurelia. And another. The classroom had fogged over, a gray haze settling over the desks and lectern, over Aurelia's severe features and the blinds drawn over the windows to hide the late spring sunset. He wanted to scream. Wanted rage to replace the wave of grief which had washed over him, wanted the tears he felt to brewing at the corners of his eyes to disappear. But it wasn't about to happen. Dray walked over to the window, pulling the blinds open and letting light spill into the abandoned classroom, illuminating Aurelia standing in the middle of the room, perfectly still, as if she moved, the emotion she didn't want would spill over. Far off into the distance, the great lake shone gold. "You can go ahead and get into the pond," Draven said tightly, throwing his weight against the window and pushing it open. "You know, if you're going to act like a silly goose." He made a wide sweeping gesture towards the window, motioning Aurelia jump. |

A band-aid for the past
Draven did not take well to the new information, throwing the window open, insisting she left. All understandably so. The sudden presence of light was momentarily blinding. Hand lifted to shield her gaze from the golden rays that flooded into the room. Before she spread her wings, shortly taking on form and perching on the windowsill. But Aurelia would not fly just yet, instead, her large yellow eyes met Draven's darker sherry ones. She couldn't leave him again. She wasn't there for him when Iris passed, and now reliving some of those memories, it was cruel if she flew off into the horizons.
Draven was in disbelief, maybe even denial, but he deserved to know the full truth. Human again, Aurelia leaned against the window, face solemn. "I loved Iris. And when they found out about us..." It was hard to make of the words. Sentiments she truly hadn't come to fully face. "They tried to erase her away just like Raphael. To forget." It had been so long since she said his name ever since Heinrich seemed to have filled the hole he left.
"I wouldn't let them. Eventually, they played my own gullibility letting me keep her only if I remained a compliant child. So I did... for a while." Her word slowed, maintaining her composure, barely grasping on to her own emotions. "Even when they told me I couldn't go. I didn't want them to rob those memories, I didn't want to truly lose her." There was only much now resentment towards her parents over all other feelings. The longing to be rid of them that may only be possible with a betrothal. Sure, she liked Hadrian and the idea of marriage, but she resented her parents more. "I'm sorry, Draven, that you had to hear this only now. If you want to be left alone, I understand."

| ─── | Draven's mouth was filled with bile, Aurelia's words coming to him as if through a glass wall. A second passed. Two. He couldn't breathe. The tears were still there, threatening to spill, eyes glinting in the silvery light coming through the window. "So now you're off," he said very slowly, his voice coming out much quieter and smaller than he'd intended it to, "Playing Mary Magdalene."
He wanted to throw something at her. Wanted to hurt her. Wanted to... Draven shook his head, swallowing hard past the knot in his throat. He needed to leave. Needed to go. Somewhere. Anywhere but there, where Aurelia was standing before him, calmly and politely informing him that Iris was just a passing thought. She hadn't been worth fighting for, hadn't been worth standing up to her mommy. Draven pressed his lips into a thin white line. If he as much as breathed in, he'd fall apart before her, years of missing his sister suddenly very, very present and pressing down on his throat. "Congrats to the happy couple," he said quietly, "....well" Draven laughed bitterly, straightening his tie. It had become a nervous gesture more than anything else. "... I guess you're one of those things." He didn't shove past her on the way out. Didn't say all the words that had piled up at the back of his throat, didn't scream all the accusations he wanted to. He simply left. Walked out the door, walked out the room, walked away from Aurelia. And straight to his dorm.

A band-aid for the past
Draven didn't understand, or rather, he portrayed such. It was an appropriate, natural reaction. Draven was upset, but so was Aurelia. Having to recollect those memories and make of those words for Draven, was very, very strenuous emotionally. And Draven's reaction, sarcasm dripping like venom was the tipping point that illicit a harsher response than necessary.
It was the final tap, the pressure finally cracking the seemingly impenetrable facade of a young woman who always seemed to be in control, calm and collected. "I was TEN! I WAS JUST A CHILD!" The tone of her voice was shrill, propelled by strong, raw emotions. A honest mistake, but nevertheless, one that would push Draven away from her.
No, Draven. Don't leave. I'm sorry. She wanted to call out so desperately, to run up and pull him in a hug. Yet her feet remained planted as the taller boy made his exit. She hated that she didn't, but it was for the best and mature thing to do, for both of them to calm down. Sentiments far too high for a proper conversation. And the last thing she wanted was to hurt him again - at least emotionally.
The second he stepped through the threshold did the emotions finally overwhelm her entirely. Like a hard wave crashing into her and dragging her into the violent depths. In a broken sob, the tears spilled. The hatred roared towards, against her own parents but towards herself mostly. There wasn't a point in her life where she felt such a strong hate for her own self. Iris deserved better. She should have fought. But were the rebellion of a ten year old any match for a simple memory erasing wave of skilled wizards?
Tears. It was quite a relief actually. Draining her off an emotional burden.
