Charm The Eyeglass Repair Charm, First Year

Aida, a quiet albino child from Scotland, sat in the back of the classroom by the door. Certainly Aida’s fine vision did not require glasses, but the young mage had only recently become able to cast spells intentionally. As something of a late bloomer, Aida was eager to have an easy target to practice on. The walls seemed to press in as claustrophobia swooned through the young mage's head, but even still, Aida’s ability to observe the professor prevailed.

“OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh,” intoned the little white glow of a child in the corner of the room, practicing as the professor had instructed before attempting a full spellcast. Repeating a few times in an effort to exactly mimic Professor Zahid, Aida began to calm down a little as the swollen claustrophobia subsided.

With a sigh, Aida then retrieved the black swamp stick wand that lived in an inner pocket of a long white coat. In unison with the crisply enunciated words, “OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh,” Aida tapped the wand gently onto the rim of a shattered pair of purple wireframe glasses. Instantly, the glass of the lenses knit itself back together into a once-again gleaming, perfectly transparent surface. Having gotten the spell right on the first attempt, Aida nodded and concluded that it had been good advice to practice the incantation in isolation before attempting the full spell.

Professor Edit: Noting that they had mended their glasses successfully, Zahid gave the Ravenclaw a nod and a "Well done, Mx. Ellwood.", before leaving them to practice some more.

History of Magic was one of the few classes in which Sophia actually wore her prescribed glasses, the other being Potions. They were classes that involved intensive reading or measurements, and she couldn’t get by with her farsightedness.

Today was a particularly fitting lesson because of that. The ‘Eyeglass Repair Charm’ was one that Sophia would get a lot of use out of if she actually wore them as intended.

She watched Professor Zahid’s lesson intently, eager once she learned that there was no complicated wand movement for this charm. Now she just had to battle with her American accent butchering the incantation.

She lightly tapped a pair of imaginary sunglasses beside the real ones, practicing the incantation.

“Ock-you-LISS Reh-PAH-roh!”

She knew she was wrong before it even left her mouth. She’d nailed ‘Reparo’ - due to plenty of practice in Charms - but the word ‘Oculus’ was foreign on her American tongue, not to mention botched emphasis on the tail of the word. Sophia groaned.

“Ock-you-LISS!”

“Ock-you-LESS!”

“Gah! Ock-you-LISS!”

She stopped to take a breath. Getting flustered wouldn’t help anyone. She struggled with actual spell-casting, and she knew this. Accepting it was the first step to improvement. She readied her wand over the sunglasses.

“Ock-you-liss Reh-pah-roh,” she whispered to herself, before clearing her throat.

Sophia tapped the sunglasses with her wand, and made a real attempt at last!

“OCK-you-liss Reh-PAH-roh!” she said forcefully. To her surprise, and her joy, the sunglasses were suddenly whole once more.

Sophia bounced excitedly in her seat. Normally she’d have struggled far more in learning a new spell, but she’d gotten this one after minutes. It helped that it was derivative of a spell she’d already learned.

Deciding to take Professor Zahid’s other instructions to heart, she held her History textbook high above her head and slammed it on the sunglasses once more. It was almost satisfying, breaking something on purpose for once.

She giggled and readied her wand once more.

“OCK-you-liss Reh-PAH-roh!” she said more confidently than before, tapping the shattered frames with her wand. She squealed in joy at another successful cast.

Then, what was probably a bad idea worked its way into Sophia’s mind. She knew it was a terrible thought, but she was riding on the confidence of two successful spell casts, and she was feeling brave.

She took her normal glasses off of her face, placing them on the table. With a confident nod to herself, she held her book high in the air once more, preparing to slam it down on her prescription lenses.

Oh, this was going to be a fun spell.

Professor Edit: While it was heartening to see the students enjoying new spells, he would have preferred if certain students practiced a bit more before trying their own glasses. Alas, it was an easy enough spell and an easy fix even if it had not worked... No need to caution in this case then, he supposed. "Well done, Miss Nelson."

It was unusual to Adelaide to walk into a History of Magic classroom to find that they were going to be learning a new spell today, but Adelaide certainly wasn't upset or annoyed by that realization - she thoroughly enjoyed practical classes. The excitement that bubbled in Adelaide was evident as her face lit up, learning new spells was one of Adelaide's favorite things to do and she couldn't wait to practice it herself.

The Ravenclaw listened intently to Professor Zahid as he explained the spell they were going to learn today, the Eyeglass Repair Charm. Adelaide did not have glasses herself, so the spell wasn't entirely useful to her, but she definitely could appreciate the usefulness for people who did wear glasses. Once Professor Zahid had finished explaining, and Adelaide had written down the wand movement and pronunciation of the incantation so she could refer to it in the future if needed, she started to practice pronouncing the spell before attempting it, "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh, OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh," she said, putting emphasis on the 'ock' and 'pah' each time.

She repeated the incantation a few more times, making sure that she was pronouncing it correctly before she felt that she was ready to try the actual spell. She had to make sure she was saying it perfectly so that the spell would work. Adelaide picked up the broken sunglasses from her desk and pointed her wand at them. Tapping the glasses with her wand, she said loud and clear, "Oculus Reparo!"

Professor Edit: Observing as the Ravenclaw practiced the pronunciation, Zahid noted that it paid off as her first real attempt at casting the spell was an immediate success. "Well done, Miss Barlowe."

Damii was again in the History of Magic class with Professor Zahid. He looked at him as he heard what the Professor was saying. He wanted to learn more about it. He wanted to learn as much as he could. He was making notes as he noticed the broken glasses. They were going to learn about how to repair them. He was happy that he was learning something about something that would be useful.

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh."

He said as he heard what the professor was saying. He wanted to get a hang of he charm. He wanted to get to know it better before he would go about casting the charm. He wanted to do well so his parents and friends would be proud of him.

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh."

He spoke the spell again. He seemed to have the charm's incantation right. He wanted to try it again with his wand this time. Just tap the glasses with his wand. That was easy. He taped the glasses with his wand and said "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh." He didn't see anything happen. Oh no! He sighed as the spell seemed to not work. He was not disappointed but he was going to try it again.

He tapped the glasses with his wand and said the spell out loud. "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh." He said. Did it work this time?

Professor Edit: The Ravenclaw seemed a bit hesitant to Zahid when it came to his spell casting. Not that he hesitated in actually trying to cast the spell, more that his heart did not seem to be in it. Hopefully with more practice the boy would grow more confident in his ability. "Well done, Mr. White."

It was a bright and hot summer day. Allison had just finished her other classes of the day and headed to her last class of the day which was History of Magic. While history isn't her favorite thing to learn about, she did get excited when she found out that today's class would involve learning a new spell and actually getting to cast it. She was jumping out of her skin with the upmost excitement and anticipation. Allison had a thirst for knowledge and loved learning new things. She couldn't wait to get started.

While she was sitting at her desk, she listened carefully as Professor Zahid went over the new spell they were going to learn today (the eyeglass repair charm). Allison did not own a pair of actual eyeglasses but she did own a pair of sunglasses (because she does not like being outside without sunglasses). "This spell will really come in handy if my sunglasses ever break" she said. Allison made sure to copy down all the instructions for casting the spell in her notebook. Allison had a reputation of being forgetful so she knew that if she didn't write it down, she'd forget about it later on. Once the professor had finished talking about how to properly cast the spell, Allison thought it would be a good idea to practice it a few times without her wand first to prevent any backfires from happening.

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh" she said hesitantly. "Alright, that wasn't my best attempt but I need to try again if I want to cast this spell successfully. Let's try again" she said to herself.

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh" she said with more confidence. "That was a better attempt. I think I better try one more time before casting the spell with my wand just to be on the safe side."

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh" she said with full confidence. She remembered to put emphasis on the 'ock' and 'pah' each time so she now felt better about casting the actual spell. Alright. I think I'm ready to cast the spell with my wand now.


After repeating the incantation, she felt she was ready to cast the actual spell and with her wand this time. On her desk in front of her, Allison saw a pair of broken sunglasses that she needed to mend back together. "Alright, here goes nothing" she said. She picked up her wand and pointed it at the sunglasses on the desk and said "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh" with boldness and confidence. Soon before her eyes, her broken sunglasses repaired themselves and were fixed.

Professor Edit: Zahid noted that the Gryffindor seemed very confident in her ability to cast the spell - and she was not wrong to be so, as she succeed on her first attempt. "Well done, Miss Krug."

Colin had no idea when he'd ever get a chance to use the eyeglass mending charm, since he didn't wear glasses, but the sight of the poor pair of sunglasses lying all twisted and broken on his desk got him to thinking that the charm might come in handy on someone else's glasses!

Colin listened as Professor Zahid explained the charm and how to cast it. Colin wondered if there was a charm for breaking eyeglasses, or did the professor bring a hammer to the classroom? He perked up when the teacher recited the charm's pronunciation --- OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh --- and informed them that they only had to tap the glasses and speak the incantation.

Sounds easy enough, thought Colin. But the proof shall be in the pudding! All he'd have to do is practice the incantation a few times until it sounded like Professor Zahid's pronunciation, then give it a go on the broken sunglasses! Colin's eyes opened wide as the professor actually gave them permission to smash the sunglasses and repair them over and over again! "Whoa, this is going to be fun!!" he said.

Colin cleared his throat and recited the incantation several times, until he got it right: "OCK-you-luss ree-PAH-roh --- OCK-you-less reh-PAH-roh --- no! --- OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh! That's it! OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh!"

"Well lad, there's nothing for it but ti give it a go!" Saying that, Colin picked up the glasses with his right hand, tapped them with his wand and said: "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh! Yess!" He pumped his fists in the air as he watched the sunglasses being repaired by the charm's magic!

A big smile came across his face as Colin set the glasses down on the desk and took off one of his shoes. Holding the scuffed toe in both hands, he lifted his shoe up over his head and brought thick heel of his Doc Martens down smartly onto the sunglasses.

BANG!!!

One lens shot out to the side, bounced off the student next to him's shoulder before landing on the bench; but the rest of the sunglasses lay in a crumpled mess of twisted plastic and metal! Colin dropped the wayward lens on top of the heap and tapped it with his wand. "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh!" He watched as the fragments of plastic lens were reassembled and the metal and plastic of the frame unfolded and returned to their original shape.

"Wicked!" he whispered. Slightly louder, Colin said: "I wonder if this charm will work on a broken telescope as well? It's got lenses and all!"

Professor Edit: For a moment Zahid thought someone had messed up the spell horribly with suh a loud bang, but no, it was simply someone being really enthusiastic about breaking their practice glasses. He walked over to observe the boy's next attempt. "Well done, Mr. McCoire."

Whispers were that this class had something to do with mirrors. Or was it glass? Either way Beatrice was excited. There would be objects to play with in this class. And by play, she definitely meant use appropriately.

Walking into the classroom, she giggled to herself. Definitely glass, or should she say glasses. Bea wondered if they would be performing the eye-glass repair charm. Her Nan always performed it with her mother, both of them wearing glasses. Bea internally patted herself on the back when the Professor announced they would be performing the exact charm Bea thought. Thanks Ma and Nan.

At her desk in front of her there were a pair of thin, wire framed reading glasses. The bridge in the middle had been snapped in two, making the pair look like two misshapen monocles. All the need were a chain and the would be perfect. Never-mind the bits of wire sticking out at the sides. Bea smiled. This class was extra amusing to her for some reason today.

Having already seen the incantation being done at home, Bea felt confident that she would be able to do it. Practicing the spell to get a feel of it on her tongue, she made sure to pronounce it right. "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh." She took a deep breath, saying it again, but this time tapping her wand at the same time she pronounced the incantation. "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh." At the tap of her wand, the wire magically stitched itself back together, creating a perfect pair of glasses.

Professor Edit: Making his way down the rows of desks, Zahid checked on his students' progress. Stopping next to one of his Ravenclaws, he watched her attempt the spell. "Well done, Miss Langstreth."
