Alchemy 3: A Plantiful Fieldtrip

He turned around to see who had answered his question, and it was none other than Prefect Evelynn Decipio. "Evelynn!" he exclaimed, happy to see another familiar face, especially that of an upperclassman he looked up to. The small boy considered her response and explanation for a moment. So, the Head Alchemist was likely to be a student of their own age? What she was saying seemed to make sense. A professor really had nothing to gain from keeping their identity secret; it wasn't as if Alchemy was a dark art or a superstitious art that could besmirch one's reputation.
In turn, Hunter seemed to agree that the Head Alchemist was a student as well, although he was stuttering a bit more than usual. Perhaps it was a difficult question to answer with complete confidence, even for someone with brains like Hunter. Avery merely shrugged, and didn't have anymore insight to add. He wasn't too hung up on exposing this Head Alchemist, either, and only asked the question conversationally. Because, he was really here for the action and to hang out, and not bust his limited brain cells to solve a mystery of identity. "Well, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled on who's a good candidate for Head Alchemist among the students, then," he said. "He or she might even be with us today."
"Yo, Kim! Glad you could make it," Avery greeted the Gryffindor boy who joined them at the greenhouse entrance. "So, why don't we start heading in?" he asked the group and inched towards the entrance and into the greenhouse. "The note on the door said that we'll be harvesting some grass, slugs, and cabbage, I think. To be honest, I'm pretty excited. Doing some manual work really beats studying at my desk all day."
With that, he headed into the greenhouse, finding Professor Irons sitting on his desk and Nurse Brumby nearby. "Hi Professor Irons, hi Nurse Brumby. How are we going to harvest the plants today?" he greeted both of them and asked. Then, Avery frowned. "Why is Nurse Brumby here?" he whispered nervously to the group of students, or anyone close enough to hear. Was the Head Alchemist expecting them to be hurt? Immediately, Avery's mind went back to the note on the door, which mentioned that the cabbage could chomp on their bones... "Well, if I get hurt today, I'm going to give the Head Alchemist a butt-whooping when I find out who they are," he said decisively.

Open to Interactions | Entering the greenhouseCade Darkbound was quite sure he was running late to his first ever Alchemy event. He'd been so thrilled to get started with it that he'd researched in the library the entirety of the night prior. But unfortunately, that gave way to a rather large problem of snoozing away the hours leading up to the meeting. It was a long way to the greenhouse from the west tower. And Cade's sides were in stitches by the time he made it to the cluster of club members by the door. Sweeping his gaze across, he gathered enough to know he'd made it just in time for the doors to open. Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby were just welcoming in the students. Cade sighed in relief, a sound that was nearly a gasp of exhaustion. It was not easy running down that spiral staircase.
Catching his breath, Cade made his way inside the greenhouse, nodding toward the people that caught his eye. "Er... Hullo, everyone." The young Ravenclaw smiled awkwardly, feeling very out of place. Knowing he was new in the wake of older members was always scary. But he felt better about himself being quite familiar with the greenhouse in general. Quietly, Cade would approach @Jeremiah Irons clearing his throat to gather the professor's attention. "Excuse me, Professor. I just wondered if we would need our protective gloves today? If we do, may I borrow a pair? I'm afraid it slipped my mind. I left mine behind." Cade wanted to kick himself for forgetting. But he'd been so excited about getting an official invitation from this mysterious Head Alchemist he nearly forgot that they'd be working with potentially dangerous plants to harvest their ingredients. To be fair the question was a good one pertaining to all the club members who would be involved. And with a quick glance around he saw nary a glove in sight. But that only dampened the Ravenclaw's resolve. What if it had been a stupid question?

It didn't go unnoticed, at least for him.
That is, Hunter writing down something in his notebook, directly after he'd said his name.
Was Hunter in charge of the class? Or was he just taking down notes to tell the person in charge of the class who would be coming later on? Evelynn chose to respond to his previous questions and Kim wasn't surprised she didn't offer a counter-introduction. He already knew who she was. The tall boy glanced back over at Hunter, someone he'd taken an interest in right off the bat. Avery had already given him some tips on what their members looked like.
And the boy in front of him now was definitely Hunter. Kim's attention was distracted by Avery when the Slytherin raised his voice and spoke to him. "Mm. Sounds like a plan." He said as Avery suggested they all go inside the greenhouse and spoke about some note's contents. There had been a note? As Avery moved away from the door, Kim saw the note for the first time. So there really had been a note. Harvesting grass, slugs and cabbage? How fun.
No sarcasm intended on his part.
Kim liked being outside and helping the hospital wing out was a good thing in his book.
But he had to admit, he was kind of curious what cabbage had to do with making potions to cure patients. Or maybe it was some kind of salve or something that required some food ingredients. Upon entering the greenhouse, Kim immediately recognized the Herbology professor. He liked Professor Irons and his class, it was one of the ones he felt quite at ease with. Not to mention, it had to do with plants. Charms and Potions also were very fun classes.
Defense Against the Dark Arts was quite intriguing and Kim couldn't wait to see what else they would learn there. History of Magic had been boring at first but had quickly become rather interesting as they started to cover subjects that he didn't know much about. Astronomy was a little confusing for him but he managed alright in the end after doing some research into the subject on his own. That class was also fun as he liked celestial subjects alot.
Flying... well, he wasn't going to go there... or dignify that class with any kind of response. But there was one class that absolutely frustrated Kim more than anything else.
And that was Transfiguration.
For some reason, it gave him more trouble than anything else had so far. Putting in lots of effort for that class did not seem to help at all. Kim's brain tended to spin when he tried to focus in that particular class. He understood the main concept but it was the homework that he tended to have trouble with. Understanding the concept, learning the wand movements and using focus and determination when it came to casting the spells, that he was good at.
But explaining things... Kim shook his head, not wanting to think about it anymore. It was giving him a headache. At least he didn't have to worry about the homework for tomorrow, he'd already done it and was glad it was over. Tomorrow if they had hands-on practice, he was sure he'd excel at it. "Professor Irons. Nurse Brumby." Kim said, inclining his head towards both of them. Like Avery, he was curious to know what they would be doing today.
Or rather, how they would be doing whatever it was.
"Do you think the Head Alchemist will show up today? Or do you think they are already here somewhere?" Kim asked Avery, as he was standing directly next to the boy.

Disclaimer: Due to the previous Disclaimer, students will be slightly god-modded into the greenhouse. If you are uncomfortable with me stating that your character entered the greenhouse with the rest of the group, then please OWL me immediately when possible.
Hunter tucked his journal within his school robes. Even on a Sunday, he was wearing his school robes since it felt rather natural to be in them. He stayed in the back as the small group of smart-minded and willed students began to enter the greenhouse one after another. Some entered early with their own sense of ambition, and not many seemed afraid of what was to occur. To search for knowledge and participate in it required risk. A feeling of excitement overcame Hunter, and he could smell the growing anticipation in the air.
Eventually, everyone entered of their own volition. Hunter approached Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby, giving both a polite greeting before heading back towards the group of other students. The group was very small, but it could still be considered small if all the members of the club had shown up. Nonetheless, there were certainly enough hands to help out in this interactive task. It was now a question of if everyone was prepared or not. Hunter himself had always been outside, but he rarely touched magical plants before coming to Hogwarts. The majority of them were already plucked or handled by his grandmother. He didn't have the experience, but he took a lot of time researching the plants they were going to be dealing with. Hunter hoped his knowledge would be able to suffice. The graceful star grass, the disgusting bubotuber, and the savage (or maybe adorable) chinese chomping cabbage were already in Hunter's head. Afterall, he was the Head Alchemist who helped plan this event. He was very grateful and glad that Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby agreed to keep it a secret.
Now the next issue was whether Hunter should have a partner or not. Typically shy and nervous all the time, Hunter wasn't 100% sure if he should team up with anyone. He already declined Vale's invitation because he wanted to get to know everyone better. Still, though, his anxiety rose a bit in fear of making himself into a fool. With that, Hunter stood and awaited instructions from both Professor Irons and Nurse Brumby. The students knew what plants they were dealing with, but were they actually prepared in harvesting them?
Action: Hunter is awaiting instructions from Nurse Brumby/Professor Irons on the location, cautions, and instructions on how to harvest the plants with the other students.

†-----------------†--------------「 Wood to Ash 」-----------------†--------------†@.Liana Kerr†-----------------†--------------「 Fire 」-----------------†--------------†----Hearing Hunter's rejection, Vale's mood turned sour. When he offered Avery as her partner instead, she had a burning recall of Avery hurrying over to dear ol' Maggie at the Valentine's Day Tea Party.
"I don't think he'd be all that interested..."
It was a soft mutter from Vale, which would soon be proven wrong when Avery popped in willingly to take her as a partner. "Well, if you're fine with it, Avery." She quietly spoke, wondering how Maggie and Avery's relationship was going after what happened at the party.
She would blink when the discussion was changed to the appearance of the Head Alchemist's, remembering quite vividly that she did indeed sign up to meet with the Head Alchemist as discussions went around about the appearance of the Head Alchemist. Even Hui Ming's girlfriend was getting into it as well.
Well, she'll be meeting them at some point. She'll keep assumptions to herself until then.
It probably wouldn't look that great either if it was figured out she signed up just to see who the Head Alchemist was. Not like Vale cared too much about appearances. Obtaining any form of knowledge was always such a riveting task for the young Ashwood.
Like meeting someone new now.
"Welcome to Alchemy! Vale Ashwood at your service! May all your enemies melt away in acid as you watch!" She greeted Kim Sato, bowing down to him like her words didn't harbor some form of malice of their own.
But hearing Hunter practically clattering his teeth put Vale on observation duty, making a smile as she tapped his arm. "Aw, Hunter! No need to be shy, you got an upperhand among us all anyway on this stuff, right?" It was her way of comforting her long lost cousin, taking notice of his meek behavior only when around people. And she certainly didn't feel wrong in her regards, as Hunter seems to always be one step ahead of her when it came to potioneering.
Vale would stop her poor way of comforting when she notice the Herbology professor rushing on by. Was it time then? Without much else, Vale grabbed the back of Hunter's collar and attempted to drag him along into the greenhouse with her.
"Look guys, we can go in now." Vale's name should be Captain Obvious instead.
Once inside, Vale was tempted to explore the entire complex of the greenhouse. But she knew better than to be doing that, not when it would be easy for her to get caught in the first place. She'll take to sniffing the area around her instead then, listening in on everyone's conversations while doing so.

Alchemy 3: A Plantiful Fieldtrip

Kels would laugh when he saw Tuesday arriving late, though not at the man's expense. Life came at one so fast, it was easy to miss things. Kels himself was always going down one rabbit hole or another. Or sometimes a weasel hole that he dug himself, those were the best kinds of holes. For the two of them, these plants were ones they were very knowledgeable about and comfortable around. There was nothing to fear but the chance that the kids would be brats. "Plant time, bro."
As one kid after another came in, Kels giving his happy acknowledgment, he would hear a question or two thrown out. He was less winded than his professorial counterpart, so he jumped in with his thrumming, elastic energy, bouncing in place a bit. "Yop we got gloves. Use th'spares fer class." Kels would point to the place that most of the tools meant for regular Herbology lessons were kept. They weren't better than one's own gloves, but they performed their purpose. "As fer how, I'll jes' tell y'what each plant do, an' how t'harvest them. Or Mardi will. This isn't a class, really, yer all doin' work fer us."
Seeing that the note the Hunter kid left on the door was the means by which he was trying to mysteriously communicate, Kels would offer a better explanation, "We need these ingredients fer our hospital wing potions. T'seasons is changin', so they're ready t'go. Let me jes' start an' show you guys what I mean."
There were three dimensions, not including the fourth (that being the door outside.) On the left, talk white stocks of almost furry looking herb in long dried piles on a table. Behind Tuesday and the desk were black, wet-looking blooms in individual pots, heavy with leaves. They might recognize the pots as the same ones they use in their own class projects. On the right wall, a crate sat with Chinese labels printed along the side. Anyone able to read Chinese would see they were about magical international shipping from China. It was secured tightly. It was pretty obvious what was in them.
Moving to the left, Kels would pick up one stock, the buds bouncing but still well attached. "This is star grass fer Star Grass Salve. Suuuuuper, super useful, heals up cuts an' bruises. We get bushels in from America, where it grows in big, open prairies. Even muggles used to use 'em fer treatin' colic." Kels leaned back, looking at Tuesday, hoping he'd have some kind of fun anecdote about the prairies back home, but whether he chimed in on any other Star Grass facts, Kels would then continue. "I need paste, as much as you can make. Take them capsules off the stem an' grind them in that mortar an' pestle. You all know how t'do that by now, right?"
This plant wasn't going to attack them in any way, it was just a plant with healing properties. If they were ever in America, they could pluck them out of the ground and make an emergency salve for survival purposes. Obviously that was a hyper-specific example of a thing that probably wouldn't happen, but it was still an important ingredient to recognize for as useful as the salve was. Kels himself used to carry that or some Butterfly Weed Balm everywhere he went.

Kim had brought his protective gloves with him.
After all, he'd heard from Avery that they'd be meeting at the greenhouse.
It stood to reason that they would be doing something inside. Therefore, just in case, Kim had brought his protective gloves with him. It was a good thing he'd done so.
As he glanced around, Kim noticed some herbs, pots and crates around the greenhouse. The crates had some Chinese characters on them. They told him that they had been shipped internationally from China, using their magical service. He wondered if anyone else had been able to read the labels. Well, besides the professor and the nurse. Or did they even know what the labels meant? Kim's attention was drawn back to Nurse Brumby as he started to explain.
So the first thing they would be harvesting was the star grass.
Nice.
He picked up a mortar and pestle as that was an essential part of what they would be doing inside. After all, you couldn't grind the grass without these two tools.
Kim let his eyes flicker over the people inside. He wasn't the sort to be overly friendly towards others if he didn't know them. Even Avery had been the one to initiate conversation the first time they'd met. Yes, Kim had spoken first, but Avery had been the one to keep the conversation going back then. Still, Kim didn't think it would be wise to not have a partner for this gathering of plants. Avery was taken and he was the only one Kim really knew here.
The best possible option... ah! Yes, he'd choose the prefect.
After all, she was a Gryffindor prefect and he belonged to Gryffindor House.
It was a perfect match.
He made eye contact with her, waiting until she'd acknowledged him. "Evelynn. You want to be my partner?" Kim asked as he waited for her response.

Lips pursed the moment Argentum had tucked away his journal. How sly. The moment she had really gotten close enough to peak at it, it had disappeared. Her gaze would linger on the back of his head for a moment, the machinations of her mind quick at work to solve the new wonder at what lay hidden within the depths of those pages. Unfortunately, it was a riddle that would have to remain obscured until another time as the group was quickly ushered into the greenhouse.
She moved along with her rest, posture erect on gliding feet. Given the age difference and the accelerated growth of girls compared to boys, she really did seem to tower over most of them. In an environment where she was quite accustomed to older and taller students, it was an odd experience. Good day Professor, Nurse Brumby," came the confident greeting for pair of adults. Never did a sense of seniority settle onto her shoulders like it did in that moment as the settled around in wait of instruction.
Hands folded one over the other against her lap, she listened attentively to the instructions. Naturally, her curiosity would lead her gaze to wander, peering curiously to the crate with the Chinese characters and the potted plants behind the desk; but they would return swiftly to the piles of what almost looked like blooming wheat soon enough. It seemed their tasks would come step-wise. Unfortunate. The grinding of the pods was menial work she would rather have skipped in favour of something a bit more intellectually stimulating. Or at least interesting..
The sound of her given name elicited a twitch at the corner of her mouth, an irritating reminder of the tendency of Hogwarts students to be far too familiar. Careful to keep the annoyance contained, however, she would swivel her attention in his direction, her expression polite. "Decipio," she corrected him gently, emphasizing her surname. "And certainly, if you like," she continued, addressing his request while stepping alongside him where he stood with mortar and pestle. "I imagine it would go rather faster if we worked together."
Leading the two over to a table, she would collect a pile of the tall stalks and separate out some space for them to work. "I suppose, since you have the pestle already in waiting, I could separate the capsules and deposit them into the mortar for you to grind?"
The offer delivered itself smoothly and logically given the situation, but even Evelynn couldn't deny the convenient solution to her initial dismay. Already her hands would get to working even before he had replied as though the decision were already made. Of course, if he objected, the notion of making a scene was even more distasteful than the reality of having to be the one to do the grinding and she would graciously concede the decapsulating. Either way, she would get started, hands working nimble and efficiently in whichever task she was afforded. She was three years in at this point. It was practiced movements and she would make quick work of it.
"I could very well be mistaken," she would chime up, intent to fill the silence with the opportunity for conversation, "but I do not believe we have really spoken at length prior to now." They hadn't. She wasn't mistaken. But it always seemed more polite to open this way. "You are in first year, if I'm not mistaken?" Again, she knew the answer already, recognizing him from among those she had led from the Great Hall and guided to their dorms at the beginning of this year. "How have you found your experience at Hogwarts? What is the most shocking discovery that you have made?"

Alchemy 3: A Plantiful Fieldtrip
It only made sense for the first plant to be picked to be the most mundane and easiest of their three choices. It was a good way for everyone to at least be in a more awake and more active mood. Hunter gave a slight frown on the comment from Nurse Brumby about this being free manual labor. It almost sounded like he was glad to get some free child labor, and almost as if no one had a chance to do so. Hunter decided to let it pass since there wasn't much reason to make a scene against such a comment.
Some of the students might not have been too excited about the stargrass, but there were still some beneficial factors on the plant that Hunter could pinpoint already. For starters, even muggles were familiar with that plant. That meant one could utilize the plant and the paste from it around them. Hunter actually hadn't learned that many or rather any useful un-magical methods could be used outside the lives of wizards and within the lives of muggles. He found it interesting and decided to get straight to it right away.
However, Hunter stopped himself, and still wanted to meet and interact with a new member of the club when possible. He was unsure of who to ask, but he decided that asking a fellow housemate would be the best option. "Birds of prey, never stray," was once a phrase Hunter wrote on a broom racing/ quidditch banner, and it certainly made sense to him to work with someone close to his age and house: "M-Mr. D-Darkbound, correct? Would you prefer to work together? I'm more familiar with a mortar and pestle, would you mind decapsulating the stargrass? I-I'm Hunter."

Kim regarded the prefect before him.
She seemed a little miffed by his words. But from what he wasn't sure of right now.
However, judging from the way her lips tightened ever so slightly, something he'd said had set her off. Kim quickly ran over the words he'd said inside his mind, trying to figure it out.
He'd asked her to be his partner. But there was nothing weird about that, it had been a simple question relating to the task at hand, therefore it most likely wasn't this. However, she'd also said her last name. Ah, that must be it. She didn't like anyone using her first name, unlike most students at Hogwarts. "Mm. Decipio." Kim would remember this from now on. He actually hadn't remembered her last name until now. The girl then agreed to be his partner.
As Evelynn led them towards one of the tables, Kim followed her. He was content to let her lead and take charge, unlike other boys his age might have done. Most would probably have tried to negotiate with her or gone off on their own, expecting her to follow them. Evelynn spread some stalks out on a table and told him he could grind the capsules into mortar. Kim nodded and as the first capsules went into the mortar, he started to grind them into powder.
It was around this time that she started to speak again.
Kim was content to simply work in silence, it wasn't really awkward for him in the least.
But he knew that most people didn't like to be quiet when doing things with a partner, which he could completely understand. As Evelynn spoke, Kim listened to her words. "Mm. This is my first year and it's going quite well I think." He replied, his answer short and concise. Kim didn't like beating around the bush, he literally said what he thought or felt like at the time. Unless it was about sweets or chocolate, then he could get a little wordy. Ok, a lot.
Evelynn's next questions made Kim think for a short time. "Hm... I think the classes are really interesting, you can gain a lot of knowledge just from one class. The first History of Magic class was a bit boring for me because my parents had already talked with me about the topic. But all the ones after that were actually pretty interesting. As for the other classes, I'm learning a lot from them at Hogwarts."
It was true.
"The only thing I really have trouble with is the Transfiguration homework."
"I can do the spells really well in class but describing theory in words is hard for me." Kim said with a shrug of his shoulders. He continued to grind the capsules into powder as Evelynn continued to put more into the small area. The tall boy didn't mention his worst subject, Flying, because he didn't consider it to be a class. That or he was trying to ignore the fact that such a class even existed at Hogwarts. He paused to quickly glance over at Evelynn.
Did she really want to know answers to her questions? Or had she only been trying to make small talk? Kim didn't like answering questions people didn't want to know the answers to. Most people tended to ask questions like this just to fill the silence or to be considered polite. But they really had no desire to hear the answer to their questions. Those were the type of things Kim hated to answer the most because why ask a question you didn't care about at all?
Were you that starved for human communication?
Since he didn't really know Evelynn that well, Kim couldn't tell what kind of person she was.
Not yet at least. Kim decided not to reply to her other question until he'd figured out if she'd just been asking questions to fill the silence and be polite, or if she truly wanted to know. "What about you? How do you feel being a higher year? Is it any different from being a first year? Do you still feel the same about Hogwarts as you did when you first came?" Kim asked, curious. After all, a lot of impressions changed over time.
"Do you find first years annoying on a regular basis?" Kim asked, curious. What did a higher year think of the lower years? Especially when it came to first years.
