Shared Tears
@Danaë Corentin-Devereux
Wearing an old tweed coat and some wrinkled robes, Willa walked towards the Great Lake. The water shimmered under the moonlight, creating an eerie reflection of the trees around her as if the lake wanted to swallow her up and eat her whole. She had left the West Tower barefoot. She had always loved the feeling of squishy Earth beneath her feet, and her shoes would've just gotten mud on them, so she didn't mind that she had forgotten them. The mud squished beneath her feet. She really didn't mind detention, although it scared her if it meant she could spend some time at her favorite spot staring at the stars and letting out any negative emotions. Normally she would just be careless and sit in the mud, but she didn't feel like getting dirty that night, so she decided to sit on an old wooden pier that looked like it could fall apart at any moment. There was a little rowboat tied to it. As she spread a plaid shirt that she had taken with her to Hogwarts onto the pier to sit on, she sighed.
It seemed like there were billions of stars right above her for her to stare in awestricken wonder at. At home, in the muggle world, she would always climb out of the window with a backpack of supplies, take her father's telescope with her, and hike out to the faraway hills and stare at the stars all night, charting their locations and dreaming many dreams about her future and her fantasy worlds, before hiking back. She had always managed to get back before her parents woke up, never getting in trouble. One or both of them was gone for business trips most of the time, anyway, so it's not like they'd notice.
The stars had always been a point of interest for her. She had wanted to be a muggle astronomer before coming to Hogwarts, but her dreams were crushed and she became a part of the magical world.
She thought the magical world was awesome, regardless of her previous dreams.
She dipped her toes into the water, thinking deeply. She watched the little waves her feet created, distorting the reflection of the trees and the moon.
It's funny that my last name is literally Moon and I want to study the moon, she thought. It was quite cold, colder than it should've been in April. She liked the cold, actually-- it was comforting in a way to her. The wind reached out to her as if in a hug, comforting her.
After a few minutes of deep thought whilst staring at the vast array of stars above her, identifying constellations and phenomena that she would take notes on later, she couldn't resist the sadness that wafted over her.
She had tried to lie to herself, to avoid thinking about it, but she had felt broken lately. She was angry. She was sad. She was terrified. She didn't even know why. So many things had been thrown at her at once, and she didn't know what to do. Her trauma from when she was back at home combined with being sent to Hogwarts, not knowing anyone, had turned her into a nervous, depressed wreck.
It wasn't long before the sadness that was resting on her shoulders caused her to crack. She stopped holding in her tears and let out bitter sobs full of anger and pain, staring at her hands through blurred eyes. She screamed angrily, letting it all out. She kept crying, not planning to stop for a while.

─────This was fine. This was perfectly fine, no reason to freak out or anything because it wasn't as though she had poured her heart into this letter to her mother, it wasn't as though she had realized everything she truly felt, and certainly wasn't as though she was eleven, scared, terrified, abandoned, and alone in this school. But she was perfectly fine. Right?
She wasn't. She absolutely wasn't, because tears were streaming down her face, and Dany was stumbling, tripping, down the stairs from the owlery. Sconces flickered as she passed by (and maybe the ambience might have been comforting had she been in the right frame of mind).
She was fine. She was fine. She was fine. That comforting mantra running through her head was the only thing holding back the sobs that threatened to wrack her entire body and send her to the ground.
Merlin, she didn't even know where she was going. Opening a door, shoes clacking on a cobbled path until it turned to dirt, robes drawn close to her body as if protecting her from the cold or the things in her own mind that sought to destroy her, hair pulled back, eyes red.
Until finally, she collapsed. Nails digging into wet ground, tears turning into sobs, turning into something horrible, great gasping heaves that threatened to upend her innards. Because she couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't do anything but cry and sob and dig her nails into the ground because this, this, was all she had left.
And then she heard the scream, and she broke. No- she shattered, completely, horribly, and at that moment even the stars seemed to despair. And she looked up, up at that sky that held so much- so much pain, and suffering, and love, because maybe they held the heavens in there and her mother- oh gods- this was why she was hurting.
And the sobs didn't stop, and she heard the other girl. And for the love of everything, couldn't she just have a breakdown in peace at a lake that was lapping at her hands? No? Then she would leave. Except she couldn't. Not that she wouldn't. She couldn't. And she keened. And that was the beginning of her end.
