Basic Ballroom Dance Lessons Year 1. Closed

Intruding upon @Harmonia Melodius and @Simon Kincaid

Sophia was leaving the little witch’s room when she heard it. A beautiful waltz was coming from one of the doors a bit down the corridor, and she was feeling nosy.

She crept along the corridor until she reached the door and held her head against the door, listening in. It was beautiful. Did Hogwarts teach music classes?

She quietly opened the door and stepped inside, trying her hardest to avoid interrupting whatever was happening. When the door closed behind her, her mouth dropped.

It wasn’t just music. It was dancing. There were two students, close to Sophia in age if her eyes weren’t mistaken, dancing elegantly in the empty room. It was beautiful. They were the picture of grace, almost belonging in a Fairy Tale.

She almost felt like she was intruding on the other two students. She cringed inwardly at the thought. She was already socially awkward, and now she was watching these students dance?

She considered turning to leave, just to spare herself the embarrassment, but she was interrupted by the end of the music. She peeked over at the two students like a deer in the headlights.

Now that it was quiet, except for their conversation, opening the door would just alert the two dancers, so Sophia had to either leave loudly or go all in.

Bracing herself, Sophia threw on a smile and a false bravado as she began to applaud their dance. It wasn’t like she wasn’t actually impressed, anyway, so she may as well show it.

She walked over to the couple, too far in to escape now.

“That was beautiful, you guys,” she said with the smile still on her face, “You two are so cute. What’s the occasion?”

" Of course, I prefer to fix what I can think of early. Professor Fresnel was kind enough to transfigure dancing shoes into the steel toe boots, I doubt anyone makes them for children." she responded curtsying after their dance concluded." Other then dancing, I can play the piano and the violin."

“That was beautiful, you guys,” A new girl said with the smile on her face, “You two are so cute. What’s the occasion?”. Yet another person who missed the sign on the front door. " Oh hello." she said almost falling into her usual shy self, before recovering and a soft smile formed on her face.

" My name is Harmonia Melodius, its a pleasure to meet you. With the Blossom ball coming up and I know everyone cant afford dance lessons. So I decided to host basic waltz lessons for free. I have a sign outside the door but I assume you were more interested in what was going on inside. " she said suppressing a chuckle, then gestured to Simon. " Simon Kincaid here has volunteered to help with the older student or ones that are too tall for me. And that dance was to see how well he knew it." She finish explaining.

He stepped aside as the new girl came in and smiled to her kindly and looked to Harmonia as she began to talk. This was her lessons and he just the assistant so he let her do the talking. When she said though that the dance was to see how well he knew it, his smile grew a little bigger.

"I rocked it," he said quickly and then paused, glancing to the new girl in front of him and then back to the dancing professor. "I mean...I kind of did." Simon wasn't really conceited, more confident and friendly, and he was saying this is a somewhat joking manner to try and make all there feel at ease.

"But yes, Simon Kincaid. Nice to meet you. And you're name is?" He'd let the other girl do her introductions. Maybe she would want to stay for some dancing as well. He didn't mind if he was the dancing partner or Harmonia was and in reality, she was the dancing expert. "I also play piano. Guitar too. So if you need a piano accompanist while we're here too, just give a shout out," he added quickly to the first Ravenclaw in the room.

Sophia frowned. Every since she was a little muggle girl, she’d loved love stories, so when she’d thought she’d walked in on a romantic waltz, she was amazed. To say it had shattered her perception of the world was overkill, but she was certainly a bit disappointed that she wasn’t witnessing love blossom.

She was far too young and shy to ever step foot into the world of romance, but she loved gushing over others.

Then Harmonia’s words hit her. Waltz lessons? A Ball? How did she miss that?

Admittedly, she wasn’t a morning person. It was possible she had simply slept through the announcement. Yes, the sound of a ‘Blossom Ball’ sounded familiar, but as if she’d heard it through a dream. She did have a tendency to sleep in the Great Hall during meals.

Salvaging her pride, Sophia bluffed, “Ah, right. The Blossom Ball. I’m so excited for it.”

She kicked her feet idly and looked down. She kept a calm face, but she was internally panicking. She’d been to school dances as a muggle, but what were Balls like at Hogwarts? Was attendance required? Was dancing mandatory? She didn’t know what to do. She was too clumsy to dance, and she didn’t know how even if she wasn’t. She didn’t have a date - not that she wanted one anyway - or a dress and she was completely blindsided.

Then, an idea struck her.

“Tell me more about the lessons!” she requested, looking between Harmonia and Simon with a smile.

Noticing her faux pas, she added,“I’m Sophia, by the way!”

Harmonia could tell by the girls face falling to a frown that Sophia thought she walked onto something more, but regardless she held her soft smile, sadly she can't have something more with anyone." Well it will only be a basic waltz, just to give everyone legs to dance on." she said.

" Despite how much wizards wish to isolate ourselves from muggles, many classical pieces and dances made by muggles are even used by purebloods, such as myself." it was strange that they've had two wizarding civil wars over muggle blood and ideas coming into the wizarding world and yet they still dance, muggle dances to muggle music. She maybe a witch, but the wizarding world doesn't make sense to her.

" I'll be teaching the box waltz, a simple six step waltz that when finish you and your partner will trace out a box shape." She held her hand out to Simon." If you would like to learn either of us would be happy to, you may pick who to dance with. Though I say Simon and I should show it without the quarter turn first." she finish, the last part directed more towards Simon.

"It's nice to meet you, Sophia," he said with a kind smile. He didn't realize that the red haired girl was hoping for some kind of storybook romance here and if she was wanting a fairy tale, Simon Kincaid was the last place to look. Right now, his love life was more a current tragedy than anything. He had been in a solid relationship, with a girl that he loved, and one that he enjoyed his time with and uplifted him and accepted him for who he was. He was her secret keeper and would do anything for - until Summer came and she stopped trusting him with her secrets. The silence stretched out and turned into feelings of betrayal and the two never quite got back what they once had. Then, a new school year started, and in came a new girl that began to fill his thoughts. Come that past Valentine's Day, he had broken up with the one girl and not only broke hearts that night, but received a broken nose. He had since asked the other girl out but was awaiting on her acceptance to be his girlfriend. Lots of stress, lots of drama, lots of heartache.

That's why, currently, moments like this were nice. He could come to the Rehearsal Room and just leave all that behind for a bit: take a moment to breathe.

"Let the demonstration commence," he said, getting into position and assuming the lead. Now, maybe that could have been wrong, but at least historically the male usually lead and he knew the dance well enough to do so.

"Watch and take notes, and prepare to be impressed," he said jokingly to Sophia and gave her a smile before looking to Harmonia and began their series of steps.

Sophia watched Harmonia and Simon begin their demonstration, but she wasn't able to focus on the grace and elegance as she had before.

No, now she was watching as a student, and with that new perspective came new duties. She was watching and trying to memorize the steps even as they were simply offering a demonstration. The biggest problem was that Sophia knew how clumsy she was. For every step the two instructors took, Sophia didn't see a step, but instead an opportunity to trip and land on her face.

She could learn the technical side of the dancing from these two, but she wouldn't be able to inherit their elegance from these lessons. She would just have to practice and hope for the best.

Not that she planned on dancing, anyway. She was more than likely just going to people watch and maybe chat up some of her friends at the Ball, and even that wasn't guaranteed since she hadn't known it was even happening until today. But she still wanted to learn how to waltz. It could only be a useful skill, after all.

She might not be dancing with a partner this year, but next year was a new opportunity, and it might even improve her general coordination.

So she kept watching, focused on the steps and movements of the two instructors' feet and legs. Her eyes were glued on their every motion.

Simon began to follow Harmonia's lead as the two began the demonstration intended for their Ravenclaw pupil. It was an easy dance, starting off simple, and surely Sophia would get the pattern down by like their second go of it. He demonstrated with her a couple more times and then smiled to Harmonia before stepping back. "Go on, Sophia, you cut in. Come and try it out and I'll go over the piano and provide some accompaniment."

He would allow the two Ravenclaws to work at it. Harmonia was the instructor here and Sophia was the student. Besides, he could place his talents elsewhere. Simon smiled to them both and then went to the piano, not minding this at all. Sitting at a piano was one of his favorite places to be.

"You two going to the Ball? If you see me there, be sure to say hello," he added. Simon, above anything, liked making new friends. Hopefully the girls didn't mind talking while they danced. Plus, they were both Ravenclaws and for whatever reason, Simon always seemed to jive quite well with them. Those and Hufflepuffs seemed to be at the top of his friendships, not that he ranked them. He loved them all.
