As the healer worked their magic, literally, Sophia silently stared at her shoes in utter shame and embarrassment.

All she’d wanted was to impress her friends so that maybe they could be as impressed by her as she usually was with them, if only for a day. Instead, she’d made a fool of herself, clumsily overreacting to a harmless prank. The worst part, for her, was the concern from her friends.

She hated being doted on, and she hated attention, but there was a point when she needed help. In this case, that point arrived when an enchanted teacup was latched soundly onto her nose and wouldn’t come off, no matter how hard she pulled.

What really hit Sophia the hardest, though, was how similar this situation was to her muggle life.

Yeah, she’d spent a lot of time at the nurse’s office in elementary school because of her clumsiness. At least this time she wasn’t alone.

Maybe it was because she was comparing the situation to her old muggle life, but the absurdity of the moment dawned on her. She was sitting in the magical equivalent of a nurse’s office with a teacup munching on her nose. When she got over the fear, it was actually pretty funny.

A small giggle bubbled up in her belly, likely frustrating the healer, but they managed to pry to cup off and hand it to her before the giggle erupted into full blown laughter.

Now Sage and Gem really would think she was strange, but even they would have to admit it was funny.

“Kim got me pretty good, didn’t he?” she asked between bursts of laughter.

“I mean, who would expect,” she stopped to breathe, “a teacup that bites them?”

She tried to stop laughing, but every time she looked at the teacup in her hand, the laughter grew worse. Oh well, she’d just have to get him back someday.

“Sorry for the trouble, you guys,” she apologized to Sage and Gem, “It was just so scary, and I freaked out.”

She was still embarrassed, but it could have been worse.

Selim watched as the blockhead's attention immediately honed in on him after he spoke. Good, that had been the intention, getting the obvious thug's attention off the second-year student. The stare of the taller boy was intent, sharp, but Selim didn't falter the slightest bit, instead, he shifted, moving his hands behind his back, chin lifted slightly, confidently. It wasn't the arrogant type of confidence either, it was cold, level, buzzing with experience. This child had nothing on his birth father's ability to intimidate... nothing at all.

He glanced slightly to his once-conversational partner, the direction his face was in not moving an inch, eyes hidden under the shadow of his now slightly-offputting mask. The way he held himself seemed to shift the original novel feeling to something far more unsettling now.

Alec spoke, seeming ready to assist if needed, going by his own body language, but his attention was rather suddenly snapped away. After a few moments, the boy looked back at him with a slightly guilty expression, now he had something else to deal with, Selim merely nodded at his words. This was also better, now he was out of his line of fire, smart teens should be avoiding conflict in this school, confronting it head-on could easily lead to rather terrible fates. Selim, though, was used to terrible fates. Luckily, he knew how to treat injuries... and also knew how to cause them exceptionally well as a result of that useful medical knowledge.

After a little staring contest, the bloke that had caused the little scene seemed to finally process what he'd said. The words that emerged left Selim far from impressed. He actually had to think of a reason? And the reason he came up with was that? Merlin, he really was a brickhead, and apparently a lapdog to 'Yefim', daft boy. The comment about his mask, though, could only elicit a breathy laugh from the doctor garb-clad boy. "Haah...Luck? Me? That's a good joke, little lapdog, but no, I'm the unluckiest person you could meet." He drawled, voice as dry as a desert, still unfaltering. As the boy shifted to take out a wand, he spoke again. "No... masks are just good at hiding eyes, and eyes reveal quite a lot about a person... and about their intentions." His voice was cold as he said that, dark, sharp with warning, cautioning whoever was smart enough to listen that what they were planning was a very bad idea. It dripped with both danger, and disappointment in whoever the idiot opposing him may be.

Sadly, there was no one smart in his current vicinity.

The boy stated the easily-predictable spell.

So Selim would just have to act on his nonverbal warning, and defend himself, protect the students around him, and so on and so forth.
[If Selim evades]
Milliseconds after the spell was fired, the boy went from a complete upright stand that betrayed nothing of moving out of the way, and into a sliding crouch. Staying low to the ground he darted around the dog's legs, small size very much to his advantage. Then sliding in a slight semicircle spin, the chopstick he had pulled out during his rush sliced at the boy's Achilles tendons without a hint of remorse. After all, he had to neutralize this new threat before he set the damn ball on fire. He's dealt with more than enough balls being on fire thank you very much. This was a quick, easy way to render an opponent near-immobile, after all, the tendon held their whole calf taunt, if it's cut, the muscles have no support, and will quickly collapse upwards. Rendering that leg useless.

Besides, if the attack hits, he can easily patch them up so they don't bleed all over the polished floor. Just like he did with the half-giant at the festival (Pardon if he doesn't remember his name, he's honestly terrible at remembering much of anything these days). So, with ruthless precision, he'd go on the attack, after all, he was just defending himself. He had been attacked, entirely unprovoked according to any onlooker. After all, he had made his jab only loud enough for him and those immediately near him to hear for a reason.

Even then, physically attacking based on mere words was hardly an excuse, no?

____
[If Selim is hit he'll endure it without much pause and attack pretty much the same way, other than rolling across the ground in a likely-pointless attempt to try and snuff out the fire, and then slide into the attack]

So one of the new members of the group was very forthcoming with her name.

Bailey Glade.

He'd remember that name.

Hiro let his eyes flicker over her, taking in her features and filing those features under the name Bailey inside his mind. The boy looked over at the others, waiting for their responses.

As Bailey spoke, asking about how their night was going, Hiro smiled at her. "It's been going pretty well, I have a goal of meeting everyone at the ball tonight. I'm not sure if I can achieve it but I'll come as close as I can!" He said with a grin and nodded over at the potluck table in the distance. "You guys had any of the food over there yet? Some of it is quite delicious!" Hiro remarked, wondering what these people were like.

He'd been carrying the ever-bashing boomerang inside the outer left pocket of his suit for easy access. Not because he'd wanted to prank someone but because he thought it might come in handy later on. Outside. If he found someone who was lonely or didn't know what to do and didn't look like they were having any fun, Hiro thought playing with a boomerang might cheer them up somehow. But what he didn't expect was for someone to run into him.

And then, someone else ran into that person.

Like a row of dominos, people started to fall over near them.

And they nearly knocked him off his feet in the process. Since he was on the first string for Mahoutokoro's Quidditch team, he had great reflexes and didn't end up falling. But unfortunately, the jostling and near fall had knocked his boomerang out of his pocket and the 'slightly dangerous' object was now launching itself into the air as a result. Well, that couldn't be good. He hadn't intended for something like to happen. What would happen now with it?

Only time would tell.

Finished with his pranks for now, Kim looked around for the trio of girls.

He eventually spotted them.

"Yo! You get the teacup off yet?" Kim asked, letting his eyes flicker over the girls. "Sorry about that, I just wanted to see your reaction to the nose-biting teacup. You were cute on the train with the chocolate frogs. So, I wanted to see how you'd react to another enchanted item." He said with a faint twitch of his lips. "You can hit me if you want if it'll make you feel better! I don't mind!" Kim told the girl.

He glanced over at Sage and then over at Gem and then back over at Sophia again.

Damn, he should have gotten something to eat before.

Kim's stomach growled, reminding him that he hadn't eaten anything yet since he'd been so busy pranking up until now. "Wanna head back to the potluck table when you're done?" He asked, waiting for their responses. Even if they didn't want to go, he'd leave because seriously he didn't want the entire room to hear his stomach. But what to eat? Maybe he'd have a bite of everything at the potluck table. There were so many choices for food there!

Maybe some skewers.

She was pleased to see Maxi return her cheerful greeting. This would be much less fun if he'd only accepted the dare begrudgingly and insisted on being a downer the whole time. As it was, it seemed he was approaching this with the same good-naturedness with which he'd entered his name to the Goblet of Fire at her insistence. "No, not too long," she assured. It was probably a good thing she'd had a minute to take in the spectacle of her surroundings, now able to give him her full attention. "Your timing is acceptable." There was a little sarcasm there; really, it was more than just acceptable.

She grinned at the extended lily brought out from behind his back. An exchange of flowers was typical at balls, and it felt only appropriate for how they'd met, under a ceiling of forever-falling petals. The offering was accepted gently, though perhaps not quite as carefully as Maxi had been, for flowers were delicate things and she would hate to ruin it. Granted, that would probably be the case by the end of the night, Phyllis being much more inclined to carrying herself like an athlete than a perfect pureblooded lady. The flower did a little twirl, stem pushed between her fingers, before she reached up to tuck it among the sections of hair tied back. "Thanks. And you, too." He looked nice in a suit.

She had teased when Theo offered her and Karilyna his arm last year's Blossom Ball, but that wasn't quite the same as this. For one, Theo was one of her best friends and she enjoyed being a mild pest to him on the regular. She had yet to reach the point where it felt appropriate to bombard Maxi with nicknames and jesting jabs. For another, Maxi was approaching this ball business in a fairly proper matter, different than just a group of friends going together, likely the result of their upbringings, though he was proving himself to not be so uptight. She had accepted Theo's arm, and she accepted now, though with considerably more grace. "Yes, let's," she agreed. "Before there's some chaos you can point out and claim as victory." She was totally not very subtly positioning herself between him and where she'd seen that food fight earlier. It wasn't like she genuinely had anything on the line, but it was much too early to lose.

They reached a cluster of students, and it seemed that in much the same way she was covering up the little messes already springing up to buy some time, Maxi was actively seeking out ways to prove her wrong. Ah, games. He seemed very pleased with his find, and with her own glance at the titles, she would mentally admit he had possibly found a jackpot. Merlin, again, what was it with this school and fire? At the same time, a giddiness was taking shape in the way only the realm of the skies could get it to. Flying Torch Tag actually sounded really fun. As for his claim that the games' danger proved his point, she had a retort, shot back with an amused grin. "Are broom sports different in France? Danger is just the name of the game." Granted, neither sport allowed the use of fire, but she'd just ignore that part. It was, uh, just for lighting as the sun went down.

Anyway, if she was going to lose the bet, this was the best possible way to do it. Not from him pointing out some fight, but in a game that was right up her alley. Phyllis had been flying since she could walk, practically (though that early toy broom just could not compare to the things she flew now), and she was curious how Maxi was on a broom. "You're on." With no hesitation, she scribbled down her name right after his.

Well, that was done. They would just have to wait until the games began; there was quite a lot of that waiting thing tonight, with the games and the Goblet of Fire announcement, but at least she had Maxi to escape antsiness with. Ah yes, the question of what to do. Frankly, she had a fairly poor opinion of balls, having been to far too many during her childhood. She still got dragged to some from time to time, but being at school saved her from it being a year-round thing. Food was a good option, depending on the offerings. Sometimes those offerings were just stuffy and unappealing. His suggestion of dancing was also a fairly good bet. Music choice mattered a lot, because she'd never found slow dancing much fun, but even the slowest of dances could be made bearable by an engaging conversation partner, and this was a school dance, so maybe the song choice would be faster?

"Dancing sounds good." It was movement, and that sounded nicer than standing around. They needed to warm up for that broom game, anyway! "We might have to reconsider if it's too slow, though." She made a little face at the dragged-out word. Setting sights on an open area that appeared to be the dance floor, she walked with him that way. It seemed that she was in luck, whatever band the planners had chosen sounding out something decently upbeat. "You can lead, it's been a little while since I've done partner dancing."

Louca smiled, happy that Haley seemed to enjoy the compliment, and amused by the spin. It was cute and Louca enjoyed the joy that Haley seemed to be feeling. He always enjoyed when others were happy and it seemed that some of his nerves had settled now that Haley had arrived and they were at least somewhat conversing. It took some of the pressure off. “Well, your grandmother has excellent taste.” Louca added.

Louca blushed slightly at Haley’s comment, chuckling as he did so. “But then I’d look less formal, don’t you think? But I’m definitely thinking I’ll be removing it a bit later. That way I don’t have to deal with it all night.” Now that Haley had suggested its removal, he definitely could see himself doing that. It would certainly help with the whole comfort thing.

He was struggling to think of something to add after Haley said she didn’t have a plan. He wasn’t sure what all would be expected at a ball like this, never having been to one before. Obviously there was dancing, but admittedly he likely would be very awkward at least until he figured it out. Though really it can’t have been that hard? “Why don’t we eat and then head out to the Courtyard? If that’s fine by you?” All of Louca’s confidence seemed to have evaporated and some of the nerves had come back. He stuffed his hands into his pockets, unsure what to do with them.

Grinning, Louca said, “Oh excellent! And you know I’m always up for flying, but any preference you have?” Louca didn’t want to make the wrong decision and have Haley dislike it but go through with it anyway.

Louca swallowed slightly nervously and said, “Of course. Dancing sounds like fun.” Louca held out his hand, doing his best to non-chalently pay attention to the others that were already on the dance floor and what they were doing. He definitely could do this. After all, he regularly defied gravity so how hard could dancing be?

Feeling a slight reprieve when he heard a voice, he turned to see that the person was talking to them. “Yes, it’s definitely interesting. What about you? Having fun so far?” Looking at Haley, Louca raised his left eyebrow, silently asking if she’d like to join the group that seemed to be gathering close to the person.

Waiting for Haley to make a decision, he just said “Hi Hiro, I’m Louca, and this is Haley.” He tilted his head in Haley’s direction. Louca was pleased that he recognized Bailey at least among the group. Enthusiastically he greeted her, “Hi Bailey! How are things going?”

Answering Hiro’s question, he said “Not yet. Anything you recommend?” But then shortly afterward, it seemed like several people were falling, and then something was flying around. He couldn’t get quite a good look, and just made sure to dodge it as it flew too near his head, making sure that it wasn’t going to hit him.

"Don't worry, you don't have to look formal and more importantly you have to be comfortable!" Haley tried to encourage Louca not to worry about that, it didn't matter what others thought about his outfit as long as he was happy and Haley didn't care if he was standing next to her with or without a bow tie.

"That sounds like a good idea!" agreed Haley to him, she didn't know what else to do either. Haley noticed the change in Louca's posture and it reassured her a little that it didn't just seem like she was a little nervous. Smiling, she reached around his arm and slowly pulled him with her to the tables with all the food. She took something on a plate and thought about his question. "I'm not sure either, let's let chance decide. Say one or two." She prompted him and depending on his choice, it would be one of the activities. But which activity was which number she kept to herself of course.

Haley noticed immediately that Louca was not really convinced about dancing, or at least not as confident as she was. Hesitantly, she grabbed his hand, not sure if she should really do this to him when he wasn't really the dancing type at all. But the decision was taken for both of them and before they even got to dance, they were both distracted by a shout. Haley caught sight of the boy and the face was not unfamiliar, she had run into him in the Courtyard a few days ago. What a Haley thing to do.

"Hey Hiro! Nice to see you again, this time with no accident." She giggled and was still a little embarrassed that she had just run into him without actually running him over, because it had been her who ended up on the floor. "I think we will go to the Courtyard now?" she said, asking Louca at the same time. She looked at him questioningly, if he wanted to stay it would be okay with her, if he agreed she would leave the great hall with him towards the Courtyard.

Marshal Walker stood in front of the bathroom mirror, turning this way and that. He tugged absently at a stray thread along the bottom of the suit's jacket, frowning at the disappointing quality. It would have to do.

The Blossom Ball having just arrived upon Hogwarts, he was ecstatic, yet terribly nervous. Large events and parties as such were not quite Marshal's style. He preferred cosy reading nooks, empty seats in the middle of a cafe or library. Although, before arriving at Hogwarts, he swore to himself he would try to... branch out. And so here he was, picking at stray strings on a suit jacket and attempting to manage his ever-disobedient hair.

Marshal looked over his own suit in the mirror once more. One might not call it a suit, really, but more of a shirt and jacket. The translucent-looking cream undershirt was tucked into dark ankle-length pants, a matte and dull black. The suit jacket, hung over his slight shoulders, reached down to only just the middle of his hips. Personally, he didn't think the black matched his blond hair well, but it certainly made his fair skin stand out exceedingly.

Turning to leave the bathroom, his unpolished dress shoes clicked against the tiled floor. He tugged open the handle, and quickly made his way to the Great Hall. Orange sunlight was beginning to filter through the panes of the arched windows along the walls, casting a heavenly glow across the large room. Flowers seemed to dot every nook and cranny of the space, filling it with a perfumed aroma.

Continuing cautiously through the archway entrance, Marshal set a hand on the rough wall, scanning the filled room. He wasn’t sure what exactly he was looking for, but maybe he’d know when
he saw it.

And then he did.

It wasn’t an it, but rather a her. He noticed her apart from the crowd because of her unique dress. It stood apart, in a way, and he wasn’t sure why. Was it the appearance? The bright colours seemed to glimmer in the fading sunlight.
Marshal abandoned his post by the wall, and weaved in and out of the crowd towards the girl in the shining dress. He mumbled a few “excuse me”’s and “pardon”’s before he made it to a few feet behind his target.

Marshal opened his mouth to speak, and then promptly shut it once more. He wrung his hands, mind zipping between things to say. He didn’t want to come off as offensive or creepy. A simple greeting would do.

Death, grief, and general sadness was not something that Galton was familiar with. Perhaps a sort of twisted coping method had been developed by the teen's brain that kept his thoughts wired in an eternal "glass-half-full" mindset. These rose tinted glasses that he inevitably and unknowingly lived his life through were keeping him from dealing with any of the depressing events one might encounter or experience at Hogwarts. Sure, he knew he'd been stabbed by his dear friend, the same friend that was standing in front of him now, and he was angry about it, but his mind found every excuse not to think about it. For the past half year, trying to process the betrayal of a friend? No, it's time for breakfast! Confused you're missing the dude who stabbed you? Dueling practice is in 15 minutes, go get ready!

The cycle seemed to repeat itself, trapping Galton in a bright and sunny world. But face to face it was harder to avoid. Face to face with a boy he hated, yet liked so much - faced with that boy's supposed plight - Galton's mind couldn't just turn to the sweets he'd put on his plate and stop caring. There was such a flood of information he could barely process it all. Not that he was normally able to keep up with conversation, but now more than ever.

Jürgen was sorry. And leading with that fact set Galton at ease. Those rose-tinted glasses of his quickly moving to accept his friend back into his heart. People always mean it when they apologies, right? An apology was definitely enough for attempted murder. But as Hess's story continued, Galton felt more and more like his mouth was full of sticky caramel - keeping it sealed and the boy speechless.

How does one respond to someone who had a death in the family? Even more so when you're fifteen year old with the emotional maturity of a puppy. Surely "I'm so sorry" wouldn't cut it. A piece of pocket candy may also be too little.

He was overthinking it. An awkward silence had taken hold of him and their conversation. He needed to make a move, say something to his not-ex-friend. But he couldn't find anything to say. The gears that had been turning had jammed, grinding against each other as he struggled with anger, sorrow and pity.

So he wouldn't say anything. Not at first at least. He could just (or try to) wrap Jürgen in a hug. It was almost automatic. His small arms would reach around and embrace the troubled teen. Maybe he could steal some of the pain away. If Galton had successfully entangled his friend, Hess would not be able to wiggle his way out, short of forcefully shoving the grubby teen off of him.

After a good second or two the words would come. Two million things to say bubbled up all at once, ready to explode out of his mouth. "You will - We have a lot of time for you to make it up, it'll be okay. I think I forgive you? Probably... Yeah I do. Don't worry it didn't scar. The stab. Magic and all" He'd pause for a breath, look to Erin and back to Hess.

"YOU TWO CAN JOIN OUR DATE!" It was a genius idea. Hess would have plenty of time to make it up to both Galton and Erin if they spent the whole night together. And technically, the pair were part of the ball buddies already. While they may have been oppositely aligned last ball, they had still all spent the ball together. "It's gonna be great. We're gonna walk on fire - we're gonna dance, I have special shoes just for it... We're gonna eat a bunch. And no slugs this time." He'd smile up at his friend from the hug that he still had the teen locked in (unless he'd been shoved away) and then turn the smile to Erin. He was sure that Serena and Hugh wouldn't mind.

They were already making out? Bullshit, the self-assured teen thought to himself. The mention of a kiss between them incurred a sense of rightful jealousy of course, but knowledge that such a short time had passed since, there was no way that they went from enemies to lovers? His eyes flickered towards the disgraced redhead. Her face as red as her hair, he expected to hear a denial, some rant prompted by his blatant lie. That was not what happened, rather she simply said Levi's name empathetically, as if he had admitted that they had stolen a snack before their dinner meal.

If anything that felt like a punch to the gut that would cause him to buckle over. "Seriously?" He muttered, his own deluded image of the relationship that could have been a bit damaged. He thought she would wait. That she had a sense of fidelity. That she loved him or something rather close to love in any case. That what they were was more than the sum of their parts. That was why he... never mind, he was being foolish, perhaps even a bit romantic. He was acting like his stupid and very dead cousin Vladimir Athanatos. The boy had followed a pretty girl into hell and got to stay there full-time before he even graduated from school. Mathias knew that he had an incredible opportunity, the veritable lottery of lives and yet he was wasting his potential on her.

His grip tightened around his wand, his knuckles as white as his teeth which were now visible. His visage contorted into something terrible and ugly.

Mathias was a cruel young man, Winnie had been the victim of such cruelty but it was never done out of malice for her. Out of necessity or want, perhaps. Never malice. Yet he felt something, a fire in the pit of his stomach, an indolent rage. It was mixed with a sorrow of some sort, was it disappointment? He was uncertain, he had never felt that one before. It was an asinine belief that whatever it was between himself and Winnie was more than a useful tool, but he could not shake that sense of disappointment.

Winnie would cast a disarming spell on Levi and threaten Pride. The girl could throw a punch, not sling a spell. "Don't bother threatening me," he announced. "I never had the sense to run from danger," as she well knew. His wand was still in his hand, his target was never Winnie but she would suffer all the same. "You already made up your mind, moved on so get on with your damned date with that," he swallowed hard as he gestured towards Levi. It did not take long to be replaced, and the choice being a particular needle in his opinion. While there was no actual history between himself and Levi, it was the commonly held belief that there was something between the boys that went sour about a year ago.

There was nothing really left for him to do here, embarrass Levi. Antagonize Winnie. Share more than he was willing to with his fellow Mahoutokoro students. Knowledge was a weapon that if wielded properly made even the most useless foe a force to be reckoned with. Thankfully most of his peers, at both Hogwarts and abroad were unarmed in every regard but even an infant can shoot straight in error if handed a loaded gun.

He used his wand, contrary to the warnings. He was beneath it all, the dashing good looks, the brains, the height... still a petty teenage boy. The flick of his wrist, a familiar incantation: Flipendo aimed at the potluck table of all places. He never did travel far did he, from a site of uncontestable utility, be it a consumable or a projectile. He chose now the later. The aim was the table, not the contents which would be thrown by the force of his devastating efforts unless the table develops an evasive skill that would leave him embarrassed and of course perturbed.
Action: Cast Flipendo at the potluck table, yes the whole table, his aim is to cover everyone but Levi was a hopeful victim. As for the spread of the table contents, the distance it travels and how effectively it coats, skewers, or scalds is up to the moderation party.
