The midday sun shone lazily through the windows of the Charms classroom. Gemima stretched out in her seat, and idly twirled her wand over her fingers. After the Midspring Celebration, and the departure of the foreign schools, things were finally settling back down at Hogwarts.

Gem absentmindedly ran her finger over the wand's spiral-cut wood as she turned her attention back to the front of the class. It was times like these when she was thankful for her ability to intently focus on things. Otherwise, who knew how much information she'd miss out on learning! Just the mere thought of falling behind in class made her shudder.

Charms had quickly become one of her favorite classes at Hogwarts. Partly because it was one that permitted the use of magic within lessons, but also because casting the simple spells were essential to every day life. They were useful, and she looked forward to learning and improving further.

She leaned forward, just barely in risk of toppling out of her chair. She continued to fidget with her wand; just as a way to put the part of her brain that wasn't listening to the professor to use. Suddenly, the wand jumped in her palm, and shot several bright blue sparks at the person who had the misfortune of sitting to her right.

Gemima's eyes widened. She shoved the wand back into her school bag, and turned to the girl next to her.
"Merlin, I'm so sorry!" she whisper-shouted. "I should have been paying more attention to what I was doing... Are you all right?"

Spring was properly coming to Hogwarts at last. The rise in temperature in the classroom made it a lot more comfortable than during the frigid winter months, but it also consequently made Zelda a lot sleepier in class. Charms was usually a class she enjoyed being in and tried very hard to be good at, but she also enjoyed it a lot more when there were more practical exercises for them to do rather than simply going over theoretical grounds as they were today. The heavy lunch she had just had was also not doing her any favours.

Zelda tried everything – pinching herself, taking down copious amounts of notes, sitting up straighter in her chair – but nothing worked. Her eyelids would start drooping and her quill was beginning to scratch jagged lines on her parchment instead of words.

An explosion of small sharp stings on her arm jerked Zelda rudely awake. She nearly leaped out of her chair but managed to keep her seat with some effort, rubbing her arm and looked around blearily. In the first instance, Zelda had been terrified that Professor Fresnel had caught her sleeping and had been behind that weird explosion. When she stared around a bit more, she saw that Professor Fresnel was still at the front of the classroom and no one was looking in her direction except her neighbour who was looking at her as if thunderstruck. Before Zelda could say anything, the other Ravenclaw girl had quickly apologised – so that strange needle-like feeling had been from her then?

Oh, uhhh, don’t worry about it, Zelda said, still a little shaken from having been awoken in that manner. She rolled up her robe sleeve and inspected her arm – it looked just a little red but otherwise looked pretty normal. The pain had dissipated and Zelda was only left with that odd feeling pain often left behind once it had gone. Was that your wand then? I’m sorry, I was drowsing off and just got awoken by that sharp pain. Thank goodness it was just you and not Professor Fresnel.

The girl next to her was another Ravenclaw first year that Zelda hadn’t had the chance to talk to yet, but since they had been in the same classes for almost the whole year, she knew the girl to be Gemima from when her name was called in classes. It’s Gemima, right? I’m Zelda, I’m sure we’ve seen each other around before now. What happened with your wand? Does it do that often?

The girl seemed to have jolted awake due to the sparks, which made Gemima feel even worse.
"Thank goodness it was just you, and not Professor Fresnel." Her classmate remarked, rolling up her sleeve to inspect the damage.
Gemima released the breath she'd been holding. It really didn't look all that bad.

"Thank goodness you're not too hurt," She parroted. “I thought I had permanently scarred you."

That was certainly an interesting event! She did know that wands could form special connections with their owners, and that they often had personalities of their own, but she didn't really know why it had sparked up like that. There's something to research later in the library!

"Oh, and yes, my name's Gemima. I think we've had some other classes together. I'm sorry we had to meet like this, though." She was momentarily surprised at how easily the words came to her. It was a small feat, but one to be proud of all the same. It was proof of how far she'd come in just a couple of months since coming to Hogwarts.

Gem peered curiously at the girl's--no, Zelda's-- eyes. They were a dazzlingly vivid shade of green, unlike anything she'd seen before. They were beautiful, and she decided to come out and say it."I love your eye color. It's gorgeous.”

“And, uh, no, it doesn’t do that often,” she giggled softly. “I guess I was just made a wish that we were doing magic right now, and my wand granted it!”

The other girl, Gemima, seemed as surprised as Zelda was at the fireworks that had burst forth spontaneously from her wand, and also genuinely apologetic. Zelda wasn’t quick to anger in general but Gemima’s sincere apologies dissipated all her initial flash of annoyance.

It did sting a bit at first but it’s pretty much all gone now! Zelda flashed a reassuring smile at her. Gemima had the halting eagerness of someone who wasn’t used to conversation but who enjoyed them all the same, a feeling that Zelda could empathise with strongly. She felt an affinity already with Gemima and hoped to put her at her ease.

Gemima staring at her eyes caught Zelda a little by surprise and immediately made her a little self-conscious. Unbidden, her mind began ringing with the mocking sing-song phrase Zelda Lime-eyes as some of the meaner kids at her previous Muggle school had called her at a much younger age. She flushed a little at Gemma’s comment.

Thank you, I’ve always been a little embarrassed by them though. I wish they were just a few shades less bright than they are, Zelda confessed. It was still going to take some work before she could fully embrace her own eye colour, no matter how many people gave her positive comments about it.

Gemma apparently had no idea how the wand explosion had happened, and confessed that it seemed to be in response to a wish that they were doing magic at the moment. I didn’t know wands could do that, to be honest, Zelda said, eyes widening momentarily. Could wands hear their thoughts or were they somehow attuned to their desires then? Could they act upon them with some kind of will of their own? This seemingly small incident seemed to open up a whole field of inquiries. I do enjoy the practical parts of Charms lessons more than the theory bits too. Do you do a lot of magic at home? My mom’s a witch but she kept it a secret from us until when I got my Hogwarts letter so I haven’t been close to magic at all my whole life.

Zelda seemed just as intrigued by the prospect of wand sentience. Gemima smiled slightly and nodded. If they weren't in class right this minute, she'd be very open to having a discussion about the topic. But she had to keep at least some of her attention on the material being taught! She didn't want to fail a class; that'd be horrible.

Instead, she settled for quietly listening to what her new acquaintance had to say.
"Yes, both of my parents are wizards, so naturally, my sister and I can do magic, too." Gem replied. Her brow furrowed a bit. Why would someone keep their magic a secret? It seemed really strange to her, since after all, magic was such a wonderful, useful thing. But then again, perhaps there was a reason behind Zelda's mother's decision. She opted not to press further, despite her growing curiosity. She didn't want to come off as too nosy.

"Well, don't be afraid to ask me any questions about magic! My family is also familiar with muggle ways of life, since we live in such a large city." Gemima rested her chin on her fists, and blew a stray hair out of her eyes. "I wasn't allowed to do any actual magic until after I started at Hogwarts, so I spent a lot more time reading and researching stuff on the computer in the living room. So I'm sort of new to all this, too."

Gem allowed herself a quick glance back to the front of the classroom, but it seemed she wasn't missing anything that she couldn't remember later.
She turned back to Zelda. This conversation was shaping up to be more interesting than today's lesson, and that was a first for her! "I love the more practical and hands-on lessons as well, but I think that learning about the more theoretical parts of magic is quite important, too. I just wish it wasn't so monotonous." She sighed and shifted in her seat. She'd normally be more interested in such subjects, but not today. Maybe it was the wand explosion that had set her off. She felt restless all of a sudden.
