Dear Mr. Hawthorne,
I’ve written this letter to you nearly a hundred times before. Once it was sent, only to come back by Royal Mail marked address unknown. I found myself at the Royal Mail West End Delivery Office, where I brushed my hand against Post Office Box 14040, a box that I believe you were once familiar with; a box that you have visited before; and the box that let me down in trying to contact you. This was the forwarding address given at the Delivery Office and it is my hope that this letter finally reaches you.
I initially got the first address from some letters found within a box that you unintentionally left at my doorstep in South Kensington on the night of July 14, 2021. If you’re still reading at this point, something tells me you’re beginning to understand the direction in which this letter is heading.
I imagine I know who you are and I am quite certain that you know who I am.
And yet - This is a subject that I feel would be better addressed in person, as I always seem to fall short to put into words what I’d like to say in writing. Hundreds of crumpled up pieces of parchment would bear proof to such failure.
This is a conversation to be had that has been a long time coming; nearly thirteen years in the making. I have recently returned to school from just having Winter Holiday but perhaps we can meet over my Spring Holiday or even out towards Summer.
If this letter reaches you, and you feel the inclination to return my correspondence, I do ask that you please use the alias of Professor Nicholas McKay. He is the Director of the London College of Music and I believe that my aunt will most certainly forward any mail from him to me in an expeditious manner.
Hoping this letter finds you well as we enter into the new year,
S.E. Kincaid

S. E. Kincaid,
One can scarcely fathom what an insurmountable task your correspondence must have been for someone at the youthful age of thirteen. This response is overdue but do realize that time is needed for the written word to be absorbed wholly at the convenience of the reader. The reader must correctly interpret each nuance as to elucidate the message so that one can begin to clarify and deliver a response. It is then, and only then, that the written word can transcend from mind to parchment, physically revealing itself to the world.
Ink across the page to deliver a message, yes? Your words explored the prospect of a meeting and it only seems appropriate that such an introduction should take place. The written word can be one of the best mediums of communication because it gives one time to reflect, allows one to choose precise words, and yet the written word's message can be muddled in the course of interpretation. Your request to meet seems both reasonable and logical.
A trip to London is predestined.
There is much to convey concerning your future,
Professor Nicholas McKay

Dear Mr. Hawthorne,
You stated that a trip to London was predestined but in order for it to be absolute we must have a time and a place. On a small notecard enclosed with this letter, I've sent the address to a restaurant called the Duck & Waffle, located on the 40th Floor of the Heron Tower in London. It is open 24 hours and I'll also add on that notecard three different dates and times in which I will be there. They call it the highest restaurant in London. I'll ensure that reservations are made. They follow a strict 'smart casual dress code' which means they do not allow flip flops, jeans, or sportswear. The closest metro station is the Liverpool Street Underground Station.
If our meeting goes well, we can arrange another time and place for additional ones but my hope is that this letter will reach you in time that you'll discover one of the times to your convenience. I hope that one of the times will suffice and am eager to meet you. I'm certain we both have a lot of questions for each other.
Once again hopeful that this letter finds you well,
S.E. Kincaid

Dear Mr. Hawthorne,
You strike me as an intelligent man.
If I, at the age of twelve, could conclude that, you, the man on my doorstep last Summer was most likely my father based on physical appearance and reaction to my mother's passing, I'm pretty sure that you would have deducted the correct conclusion about me as well - from resemblance, the correct age, and having stated that Arabella Kincaid was my mother.
It was I who communicated to you that fact on July 14, 2021.
It was I who took such information and took action. I found you. I wrote you. I reached out to you. I waited.
I came to the restaurant in London over this past Summer to meet with you - once without your presence; twice without your presence.
Then, finally a third time, I came to the restaurant in London to meet with you and you graced me with your presence. Well, you at least showed up. In that meeting, it was I who began the conversation; if you could call it such. It was I who broke the silence, anyway. I said the first words. I introduced myself. I stated our connection. What I was met with was one word responses and a statement about a random news event about a lightning storm that occurred 4,240 miles away from London, England when I was ten.
That told me absolutely nothing about you; nothing about your relationship with my mother; nothing about what I am; nothing about the nature of what our relationship might be.
You, Sir, have graced me with your silence and yet it is you who parted ways stating "written communication should be maintained." Well, Mr. Hawthorne - here it is. Here is a letter from me to you. The burden is now on you to take initiative if there is to be anything more than blood relation between us. I have done all I can one-sided.

Master Simon Kincaid,
First and foremost: keep this, past, and all future correspondence to your own self. Understand that trust is difficult but in silence the truth will never be revealed and bonds will never be established. As previously stated, communication should be maintained and with proper protocols in place, transmission of information can be achieved.
Are you familiar with Luke 15 and the Parable of the Prodigal Son? It is a telling of coming together; a telling of reconciliation of father and son. In this reading, we follow the Prodigal Son's falling into sin, his realization of his own sinfulness, his road to repentance, and finally reconciliation. He is united at the end with his father, who welcomes him despite his wrongdoings. Your wrongdoings, as absent or plentiful as they may be currently rest unknown, but just as Jesus Christ himself would grant any the opportunity to prove themselves, the situation is as such with this current relationship at hand.
While it wasn't known that you were lost, or any sort of reality, you are as the Prodigal Son in the sense that "he was lost, but now he has been found!" (Luke 15:24) They celebrated. Perhaps this current relationship that has now been established can blossom and develop and one day there will be a celebration and more than letters and awkward meetings.
There could be more. There could be moments spent together, conversations held, customs shared.
Trust is one of life's most difficult tasks but one must trust and believe in people or life becomes impossible. Let us meet at Christmas time at the Lightopia, an illuminating winter light festival at Crystal Palace Park. You needn't make the reservations this time and will find, enclosed with this letter, a ticket with the date and time. It should be when school should be on holiday.
Until then,
Adrian Hawthorne
