Partner up! It's Potions time!
Galahad was making his way towards potions, having to ask a few students along the way but he shortly found it. The male placed a hand on the wooden door, slowly pushing it open as it let out an groan. Immediately the male was hit with aroma of different spices, herbs, and the others smells that he couldn't quite put his finger on. He stepped into the classroom excitement lacing his eyes as he scanned a few students that had already found their way to Potions. At first he wasn't quite sure where to sit, that was until his gaze fell onto an empty two person desk. The auburn haired male was quick to make his way over to it, taking a seat as his grip was tight on his leather satchel. Maybe it was best to lay low, until someone wanted to interact with him on their own terms. Its not like the Gryffindor didn't want friends, but the gryffindor was already overwhelmed as it is. Not knowing where to start when it came to conversations, or even if anyone even wanted to converse with him.
He watched the door as more students begin to spew in, some in their own little groups and others who were alone just as he was. The male preoccupied himself with counting each different colored, and trying to remember each house name to test his memory from the previous night. "Gryffindor..Ravenclaw..Slytherpuff..? No that's not quite right." He sighed out, a tad annoyed with himself. One would think it would be easy to remember such a simple thing, especially since each house name were repeated multiple times the previous night. If he struggled with remembering simple house names, was he even going to make it through his first year in hogwarts? All this seemed so much information to take in, he began to question why he was even chosen to be a wizard. He rested his head on the desk, trying to keep his mind occupied with a dust bunny. Unaware that someone was willing to give him a chance in this enormous school. Yet to his surprise one girl caught his eye the moment she entered the room, his gaze fixating on her as something about her felt different than most students he had gazed at. The Gryffindor wouldn't mind if she sat next to him, she seemed like a nice girl afterall.

βββββFrom somewhere near her, she heard a girl ask her friend, βDid you know the potions classroom is in the dungeons?!β and the resulting shrieks and laughter. It made Sylvie want to laugh, too. She allowed the crowd of first year Hufflepuffs to carry her away out of the Great Hall, down the staircases, and down the hallways of the basement of Hogwarts. She felt buoyed by the group, by their pushing and laughing.
When they finally reached the potions classroom, Sylvie slowed her pace, taking it in. It gave her the shivers. It smelled. There was a goodness and a badness to the smell. There was something curious about the dried herbs hanging from the ceiling and the jars of ingredients lining the shelves. As she looked around and took it all in her house mates were pairing off at workbenches and finding friends theyβd met on the train.
With a start, she realized she was one of the last Hufflepuffs still standing near the door.
She looked around and noticed a Gryffindor was looking at her from his workbench. There was an empty space beside himβfor one of his pals? His messy auburn hair and dark eyes made him seem a little mysterious, but the look on his face seemed to invite her over.
Taking one last look around, she adjusted her satchel over her shoulder and made her way to the empty space beside him.
βHullo,β she said, dropping her bag on the work bench. She slid brazenly into the seat beside his. βMy nameβs SylvieβSylvie Hawthorne. Are you from a wizarding family? I sort of am. My paβs a wizard, and he does magic at home, but he never took me wizarding places when I was a kid because of something that happened when he my da wereββ she blushed, stopping herself as she realized was going on about personal history this boy probably didnβt even care about. βAnyway, I just mean, I donβt really know much about this stuff. My paβs not a potions type of personβhe likes charms better.β

Galahad sat up a tad on Sylvie had taken a seat next to him, curiosity lingering in his eyes as he listened to her speak. The auburn haired male eyed her up and down, taking note of her brunette hair and sky like eyes. He let out a small yet welcoming smile, trying to show he appreciated her company despite how awkward he was at showing it. "My names Galahad Damaris, it's a pleasure to meet you Sylvie Hawthorne."
With that he extended a hand for her to shake, still listening to her speak as he nodded along. He began to feel his worries slip away as she spoke, even if a bit of it confused him a little. "No I haven't came from a wizarding family, honestly it took me by surprise that such a thing existed if you ask me."
The auburn haired male spoke in a calm tone, trying to keep his cool as to not show his bubbling excitement. Afraid that it would chase her off. This may have been his last chance to make a potential friend, and he was not willing to lose that chance so abruptly.

"Oh boy, looks like this class may be tedious for the both us then." He let out a small laugh, hoping it would ease some tension. Hoping he wouldn't drag the her down. "I have read a bit of Magical drafts and potions on the ride here however, as well as a few other books as well. I hope I can be at least of some assistance." He tried to think of anything more to say, resting his chin on his hand as he lightly tapped his foot. Leaning down a tad as he placed his satchel next to his feet, not wanting it to get in the way of any students or the professor.
"Tell me more about yourself, you seem like an interesting person. What's it like having a parent that's a wizard? This is all so new to me, I'd like to see what your life is like." He smiled starting to open up a bit more as he spoke more and more, folding his hands on the desk as he tilted his head slightly. Maybe he could learn a bit more about all this wizarding world concept, it would be useful especially how lost he was with all of this."I apologize if I'm asking one too many questions, I just want to learn about all of this. It's all so exciting!"

βββββSylvie took his offered hand and shook it warmly. What a cute smile! She felt warmed by his calm and interested demeanor. She hadnβt met anyone from Gryffindor yetβnot really. Sheβd stood silently beside some in Herbology and across from some in Charms, but this was different.
Sylvieβs eyes widened when she realized that heβd been surprised by wizarding families. So he was a muggle! How strange everything must be to him. Hogwarts was strange to her and she was used to things flying across the house and books that talked and pictures that moved. Sylvie wondered what she should say in return. It felt rude to say something like, so youβre a muggle? even if it was the truth. Even if she was more like him than like the purebloods whizzing around on brooms like they flew out of their momβs hoo-ha on one.
βHogwarts must be a big adjustment, then!β she finally said. βI feel like every time I get used to something here something new pop upsβa ghost ranting at teatime, a class in a dungeon, having to write with quills. My pa should have prepared me better!β
She laughed when he said that the class might be tedious for them both. βWeβll have to help each other limp to the finish line!β she joked.
Sylvie was pleased when he asked her about herself. She smiled at him and leaned in, stretching out her arms on the top of the work bench. βI grew up in Wheldrakeβitβs a small village near York. Where are you from? My other da is a muggle, so he doesnβt have anything to do with magic, and he runs a tight ship at home, so he doesnβt let my pa do too much βnonsenseβ as he calls it. Thereβs all kinds of trouble you can get into with magic, even as an adult. Sometimes spells donβt go as planned! Plus our neighbours would talk if they saw something strange and my paβ¦β She hesitated, not knowing how much to say. Her pa was scared off magic when he was younger and it took him a long time to come back to it. Thatβs what heβd told her. But was it right to tell other people all about it?
βMy life was pretty normal, I think. I spent more time doing homework and riding my pony and practicing music than I did with anything magic. Magic children arenβt allowed to do magic at homeβwhen we go home this summer we wonβt be able to do any of the spells we learned! Itβs illegal! I think it should be illegal to stop us!β She laughed, eyes almost crinkling into crescent moons. βThink of all the fun we could have turning rocks into chocolate and making our room clean itself!β
βI donβt think youβre asking too many questions,β she said, calming and leaning forward even more. Her braids draped forward and her eyes sparkled. βI like talking, so you can ask away.β

Galahad felt any worries slip away the moment she shook his hand in return, glad his attempt at socializing went well. Beaming from ear to ear as he didn't feel so alone now if that made any sense. It was hard to start conversations in previous classes, whether it be through group work or even just a single person. Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing, and when he did interact with someone it was only for a brief amount of time. In addition to getting to know a little more about each class as he attended them, he also gained a little bit more insight into the Wizarding world. One sport, for example, involved flying brooms.
βDid you know there was a sport in which you would have to catch balls, on a flying broom?β He let out a quiet laugh as he contemplated the discovery he had made."It sounds fun and dangerous." He remarked. "Let's make the best of our situation now, if one falters, the other will assist." He got a little excited about their current situation, despite knowing they might not get a decent grade as he wouldβve liked. It didnβt matter to him, after all, they were all fairly new. Surely the professor would understand that?
Having just made a new acquaintance, Galahad listened intently, trying to gain as much information as possible about him. Her life sounded rather interesting, something he was not accustomed to in his day-to-day life. "I couldn't imagine why they would bar us from using magic outside of school! It would make life so much easier in my opinion! I'd have to agree, it should be illegal to stop us!" He hesitated briefly. "You have a pony? Oh my, I know this must be the cutest one in the world!" He shook his head slightly. "What's their name?" He asked, his fingers quivering in excitement. Something about those small versions of horses always intrigued Galahad, he always considered them rather cute creatures.
Galahad was excited, owning a pony was not something youβd hear every day. It seemed as if he had more questions to ask, trying not to overwhelm her with too many questions. "What kind of music do you sing or play, I'd love to hear you play someday, you must be so talented!" He looked like he was much more energized by the time she had entered the classroom. As any kid would be at this stage in their lives, he was thrilled to sit with someone as delightful as her.
While shaking his head, the auburn-haired male placed a hand on his chest. "I don't know anything about myself that makes me stand out, but if you need gardening advice or even if you want to know anything about crocheting, I'm always available. Having those kinds of hobbies is a great way to relax when one feels too stressed. My mother taught me almost everything about them growing up." He smiled and rubbed the back of his head, slumping in his seat a bit as he let out a small laugh. "It's even a good thing I brought my crocheting supplies, just in case I need them." He laughed a little, forcing himself not to reveal too much about himself. How could he? There were a few things about himself that confused him, it would take him a long time to discover them. βHave you considered joining one of the clubs offered at this school? If so, which ones?β

βββββSylvieβs eyes widened at the mention of a sport on brooms. That sounded exciting! Like polo? But how would it work? Her pa wasnβt really a sporty person, so heβd never mentioned anything like it.
βIt sounds fun!β she agreed. βI canβt wait for broom flying lessons! Though I donβt know if Iβll ever feel confident enough on one to try catching balls on it.β
She saluted him when he said they should assist each other. From what sheβd heard from upper year students, brewing potions sounded difficult.
At the mention of her pony, Sylvieβs eyes lit up and she clasped her hands together. βHis name is Jeremiah, but I call him Baby J! Heβs the sweetest pony in the whole wide world. My pa calls him βJerβ, but Baby J doesnβt like thatβhe gives him such a glare! Iβve had him for years now, I hardly remember life without him. Poor thing,β she suddenly went melancholy, and after resting her elbow on the top of the workbench leaned on her hand. βHeβs probably going off his feed from missing me! Or maybe he doesnβt even notice Iβm gone! I donβt know which is worse.β
She brightened at the mention of music. βI play lute, violin, and harpβbut Iβm rubbish at the harp and donβt play it as much as the other two. My pa is a lutenistβsomeone that plays the luteβso he taught me everything. I have a tutor that teaches me violin. I stopped taking harp lessons because it was too much! And I suppose now Iβll have to stop taking lessons altogether, since I havenβt seen any music lessons being taught at Hogwarts. Maybe wizards get magic to play instruments?β
Sylvie took a deep breath. She smiled sheepishly. βSorry, am I talking too much?β
As if sheβd never offered to stop speaking, she moved on to the next topic: βYou garden! And crochet! I donβt know anything about either of those. My da keeps a bit of a garden, but he doesnβt care about it, not really. He just likes the taste of homegrown carrots better. Baby J likes them better, too. Your mom sounds really nice!β
βI havenβt thought about any clubs. What about you? Were you part of clubs in your old school? Are you going to join one here?β

Upon observing she was interested, Galahad's gaze brightened as he nodded as he continued to explain the new sport. Though he knew little about it, he was already interested in trying it out. Whenever he thought of flying on brooms, he felt a chill run down his spine. The auburn-haired male found it strangely enticing but did not mind too much. Regardless, it was an interesting subject to discuss, even if he didn't know much about it.
"I believe if you get the hang of it, that confidence will grow. It seems like riding a bike in some bizarre sense. I hear most people do it for the thrill, but I might try out for it, if I get the hang of it. Do you think it's similar to riding a bike?"He asked, his smile now as he showed off those canines. Continuing forward with the conversation, he showed her his full attention. It hadnβt faltered even for a second, glad that it seemed like she was still interested in talking to him.
A chuckle escaped Galahad's lips as he let out an excited squeak at the name of the animal. "Baby J! What an adorable name, and it must suit them!"He paused noticing her change in tone, growing concerned as he quickly went to comfort her. βSurely Baby J misses you terribly, but no worries, our holiday will be here as soon as possible, so maybe you can give him something when you get back?"He quickly decided to offer her something, thinking it might soothe her troubles. "I can help you make a little blanket, do you think that'll work? I'd love to use my crocheting skills, and I've been looking for new projects. I hope it will hold him off until the holidays come around."
He was awed by the list of instruments she played, all of which were beautiful in their own right. His lips curled into a chuckle as he pondered the last question. "I'm not quite sure myself, I haven't heard of self-playing instruments before. I imagine it wouldn't compare to a person learning the skill over time, however, but if I come across one, I'll let you know."
"Oh no! Please go on, you are really fascinating!"After his mother spoke, the heat in his face increased, causing a laugh to escape his lips as he rubbed the back of his neck. "She is a great Mother, maybe one day I can bring him some fresh carrots. If you don't mind, of course?"He asked, tapping his desk as he hummed softly. "I used to be a member of a lot of clubs in my old school. I've heard there are a few here, but none of them really appeal to me."

βββββWould riding a broom be like riding a bike? Sylvie wondered about that, and was quiet for a moment. She supposed it would beβyou had to balance yourself, and there was a lot less to hold on to than there was with a horse or pony. But there were no pedals, no reinsβ¦ How did you tell the broom what you wanted it to do?
βIf you try out for it, I hope you make the team!β Sylvie said, eyes bright. βI think it could be like riding a bike, but I wonder how you control it?β
Her pony was always an agreeable topic, and she lit up like the sun while Galahad enthused about how cute a name Baby J had, and how he must be missing her, and how she could see him over holidays soon enough. His offer to help crochet a blanket was so sweet, too!
βOh, thatβd be so sweet! A crochet blanket? I donβt know if it could handle the wear and tear of a stable, but if you donβt mind thatβ¦ Iβm sure he would love it! And look so sweet in it! Iβll take a picture for you when I go homeβmy da has a muggle camera I can use. Though I suppose Iβll have to print out the picture!β
Sylvie nodded along at his speculation regarding self-playing instruments, and was gratified to hear that he thought a real musician would be better! He seemed so kind and generousβoffering to make a blanket, urging her to continue speaking, the way he spoke so kindly of his mother. She felt a rush of warmth for him, and hoped they could be friends going forward.
βOf course I donβt mind!β she said when he offered to feed Baby J a carrot. βBut where are you from? It might be quite the journey to visit me and Baby J, especially if you canβt use magic! Though maybe you could use Floo Powder? Sometimes my pa travels that way.β
βWhat kind of clubs were you in? I was so busy with music I didnβt really join any. My da thought the band at my school was a waste of time, so I didnβt join it. I suppose itβs a mean thing to say, but he didnβt think the other children were serious about music, so I was better off spending my time practicing in a more focused way.β

Galahad began to wonder how one would be able to control a broom, maybe shouting some sort of incantation of some sorts? It made him think long and hard about it, finally deciding he may be able to learn in another class."Why thank you! I'm sure we'll be instructed on how to ride one, at some point in the day."
Galahad couldn't help but smile once he had seen her brighten up, glad he was able to cheer up even by a little bit. Understanding how hard it must be to miss a certain person or creature, especially with how far they were from home. He didn't personally know baby J, but he quickly assumed the girl was attached to her pony more than anything."I don't mind if it gets dirty or even torn up, I can always make more after all.He brightened up at the thought of seeing a pony wearing one of his blankets, grinning from ear to ear."I'd love to see it if you ever do take a picture? I'm sure Baby J will be absolutely adorable!"
Galahad wouldn't mind starting a bond with her, he enjoyed speaking with her and she was absolutely kind throughout their conversation. After all, there was always a charm to Hufflepuffs, from his experience with her and another friend of his they were just marvelous to talk to.
"I'm from Dover, England. What about you? You have mentioned we can't use magic out of school, so maybe Floo Powder doesn't count as magic? I wouldn't mind giving it another whirl, in my experience, it was a fun way to travel. You should've seen my mother's reaction however, she looked like she was going to faint once she had stepped out of that fireplace."He let out a small laugh at the thought, finding it humorous as he can still picture it rather clearly.
"As for clubs, I was once in a gardening club. It helped provide some fruits and vegetables for the school lunches, and it was quite fun to garden in a school setting. They always had the best apple trees and even different varieties of vegetables. I don't think my own garden was as big as the schools, oh how I yearn to have a garden such as that one. Maybe when I grow up and own my own home, I would be able to."
Galahad was curious about her fathers, wondering if he was on good terms to ask about them. He wasn't disgusted by how two men were together but instead intrigued. He rarely heard about the concept around his parents and was too scared to ask them about it."What do your fathers do for a living? They sound absolutely brilliant, especially with how fondly you speak of them."
