Every one of the times that me and Allison have met up, I was always the one who has there last. This time though, for once, I turned up at the Courtyard first.
I frequently go to the library for my own quiet time and the Great Hall for socialisation, but never really to the Courtyard. I only usually come if I need to or am passing by; today though, I'm there at my own will to meet up with Allison. She was going to be telling me about what it was like growing up in a Muggle household.
I settled down next to a pillar in the courtyard, where I was quite far from other people. After a few minutes, Allison turned up.
"Hey Allison!" I waved at her.
"I have so many questions for you," I immediately exclaimed, "What was it like growing up without magic? How did you do the dishes and stuff? What did you do in your leisure time? Where did your parents-" I cut myself off, worrying that I was a bit too energetic today, and that I was getting a bit too personal.
"Sorry. I ate a whole box of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans this morning, so as you can see, I'm pretty high on sugar," I said.

Usually, as a student, I am never late for anything but as I checked my pocket watch, I noticed I was running a bit behind schedule. I was going to meet my friend in the courtyard and I was going to tell her about what it was like to growing up without magic in a Muggle household. I turned the corner quickly and finally made it to the Courtyard.

"Hi Ebony! I am so sorry I am late. I was catching up on some last minute Herbology homework. I finally got my grade back and I got an O on my first assignment for the class. I am usually never late for anything." I said. She then proceeded to ask me questions about what it was like growing up in a Muggle household.

"I have so many questions for you" she said. I said "go for it and I will try to answer them in the best of my ability." I replied. She asked "What was it like growing up without magic? How did you do the dishes and house chores? What did you do in your leisure time? Where did your parents-" and she cut herself off.

"Honestly, Ebony, I had always wished I was born magical because I always had this idea that using magic would make my chores and everything else so much simpler. To do the dishes, I am not sure if you have this in your house (you probably do) but we use a helpful invention called a dishwasher. You open it up and you can put plates, cups, and silverware and even cooking utensils in there for cleaning. You have to use dish detergent to get them clean and it cleans it for you. I also would hand-wash certain dishes that weren't dishwasher safe." I said.

"To answer your second question, since I grew up in the suburbs in London, I don't live too far from the London Underground (which is the subway in London) but I never really use it that much because our family has a car. In my leisure time, I really like watching television, spending time with my friends and family, and I even like going into the city to check out the latest events. I had a deck of cards that I would always play with but sadly, I burned them when I discovered I had magical abilities and I had to get a whole new deck of cards. In Muggle currency in London, we use currency called pounds. " I said.

Ebony then proceeded to tell me that she ate a whole box of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans this morning. "Don't feel guilty. We all have to treat ourselves to something sweet every once in a while. I love candy so much. I wish I could get wizarding world candy where I live. They don't have it in the supermarkets/grocery stores so I can't buy them. When we are both old enough and are higher up in our academics, I'll be elated when we will finally get to go to Hogsmeade and try that candy you've been telling me about. What was that question you wanted to ask me about my parents?" I said in curiosity.

Dish detergent? Dishwasher? Those products sounded something like Doxy Spray, expect Muggles use it to clean dishes. "That sounds so interesting! Is it fun, cleaning dishes? My mother would use household spells, and it's no fun at all, watching her. Oh, and is it a spray, like Doxy spray?" I exclaimed, smiling, and then continued, "so you can't wash all dishes with a dishwasher?"
"To answer your second question, since I grew up in the suburbs in London, I don't live too far from the London Underground (which is the subway in London) but I never really use it that much because our family has a car. I nodded sympathetically about the playing cards- many young witches and wizards destroyed stuff before they learnt how to control their magic. Luckily for me, I didn't really destroy anything.
"I've heard about Muggles transporting with car before. But... pounds? Are they something like Galleons?" I wondered. I had never learnt about, or even heard of, the Muggle currency before, so I was really curious. At this rate, I felt as though I needn't take Muggle Studies in the future... I can always just ask Allison! I laughed at myself inside. Were there different values, like Sickles and Knuts? I really wonder. I wish I could see one in real life.
Allison asked what I was going to ask her about her parents. I hesitated to tell her.
"I was just wondering... where did your parents work and what were their jobs?" I asked.

"Yes. You cannot wash all dishes with a dishwasher. This is because sometimes, for example, certain items like fine china or knives can be damaged if they go in the dishwasher. They can still be washed but they just need to be washed by hand so they don't get ruined. Honestly, I do not mind doing the dishes but there are other chores I enjoy doing more. Doing the dishes is not one of my favorite chores" I said. Continuing on, she then asked me about cars and Muggle transport and Muggle currency.

"Riding around in a Muggle car is interesting. Unlike America, we drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Instead of driving on the right side of the road in America, we drive on the left side of the road." It just seems odd to me to always drive on the left side of the road. I am not sure if getting my permit/driver's license in London is something I'm looking forward to to be honest" I said. "Also, yes. Pounds are very similar to Galleons. I always thought the name for Muggle currency in England is a bit odd. Since I grew up using pounds my whole life so far, I am not familiar with using wizarding world currency since I came from a Muggle household." I replied.

"Lastly, but not least, my parents are quite successful in their jobs. My father works for a computer company in the city (he loves computers and technology is his thing) and my mom works as an elementary school teacher at a primary school in the city as well. My mom loves being around children as she loves brightening young students' days". I forgot to mention that I have a younger sister as well. She is a year younger than me. I also have a dog in my house that I love to play with. I love animals and I a firm believer in animal rights and against animal cruelty and injustice. I said. "What else would you like to know about me? Now that I am getting to know you better, I can confidently say that you are becoming a very close friend of mine.. heck I even think more like a sister. Sometimes, I don't like being alone in my dorm with no one to talk to". I said shakily.

I raised my eyebrows. "That's really interesting... let's say, if you broke a piece of china in a... what was it, dishwasher? Is there any way to mend it? I mean, like, without magic?" I asked. I was curious about how Muggles fared if they broke something. They obviously couldn't just Reparo it.
Allison then proceeded to tell me all the details about Muggle cars and driving licenses. I didn't know that in the Muggle world, you needed a license to own a car. Aren't they like brooms? You just have to learn how to fly them, and then all you need to do is to buy a broom... not a license as well!
Allison said that when driving, you have to be on a specific side of a road. "That makes sense, actually... otherwise you would crash into each other, right?" I inquired, half to myself.
Allison then moved on to say that she had used pounds and weren't familiar with Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts.
"That's understandable. I don't really understand Muggle money, either... I mean, it's so tiny!" I commented.

My lip wobbled and I noticed tears trying to come out of my eyes. Usually, once they get to know me, people don't want to be friends with me. But... this is the first time I've made a real friend. "That's so sweet of you, Allison... you're like a sister to me too," I choked out. I didn't know what else to say.

"That's really interesting... let's say, if you broke a piece of china in a... what was it, dishwasher? Is there any way to mend it? I mean, like, without magic?" Ebony asked.

"So, yes. There is a way to mend it. You will need a special type of glue called epoxy. It has a resin and hardener. When they are mixed together and applied to the cracks of the china, it will glue it back together. It is very durable and of excellent quality. It is a very useful thing to have in any household. I said.

"Believe it or not, I grew up not having very many friends. I try to see the good in everyone because I believe people have very good intentions. I would never judge anyone without getting to know them first. You can always come to me about anything and you can always send an owl to my window if you want to chat. No matter what happens, we are in this together. You will not have to worry about me ditching you because I am a very loyal person." I said.

As the day moved on, I noticed that the days were getting warmer and the plants and flowers were just beginning to bloom. "I don't think we'll be needing coats and scarves anymore. It looks like spring has just arrived." I said. "What is your favorite season? I love summer but I also love fall too. I am not much of a cold weather kind of gal even though I grew up living in coldish weather. I said.

I reached into my bag and ate some more jellybeans. "I should probably stop eating these jellybeans so that I don't spoil my appetite for dinner in the Great Hall. I have no idea what we're eating tonight but I hope it is something good! I said excitedly.

I looked at Allison in awe. "It's like Muggles literally have magic as well!" I exclaimed, grinning, "being a Muggle really isn't too bad, is it?"
"Believe it or not, I grew up not having very many friends. I try to see the good in everyone because I believe people have very good intentions. I smiled and a rare warm feeling filled my chest and I swallowed. "Thanks, Allison. I'll never ditch you, either," I said, smiling.
I looked at the ground of the Courtyard under my feet. The crunching pebbles and bricks were covered with stalks of grass and growing moss. Allison asked me what my favourite season was. "That's right, winter clothings are officially ditched!" I grinned. Allison said she liked fall and summer. "I love fall as well!" I exclaimed, "but I don't really fancy summer; it's so hot. I would rather winter, the cold season. Like, a lot more. I love the snow and winter activities."
Allison reached into her bag and ate a couple more jellybeans. I thought she was going to stop... but no, she kept on eating. "I should probably stop eating these jellybeans so that I don't spoil my appetite for dinner in the Great Hall. I have no idea what we're eating tonight but I hope it is something good!" Allison said excitedly.
I laughed. "Yeah, definitely. I really shouldn't be doing this but..."
I pulled out a packet of Drooble's Best Blowing Gum and popped a piece into my mouth. I chewed and blew a bubble; it popped onto my nose. I grinned.

It's like Muggles literally have magic as well!" I exclaimed, grinning, "being a Muggle really isn't too bad, is it?" Ebony asked.

"I have never really thought of it that way but that's an interesting perspective. You have such a unique way of viewing the world. That's so creative and I admire that about you. I said.

Thanks, Allison. I'll never ditch you, either," I said, smiling. Hearing these words come out of my friend's mouth was so satisfying to me. "Hey Ebony. I am going to let you in on a little secret of mine that no one else knows about me. Believe it or not, I grew up as an outsider. I always got teased for being the shy girl and I didn't really have any friends or barely any friends and because of what people have done to me in the past, I find it hard to trust/open up to people. I may be introverted but once I'm comfortable with someone, I will let my walls down with them. I can confidently say that I can trust you and I don't usually let people in or trust them easily. I said.

Moving further along, I noticed that while we were sitting in the courtyard, I caught a glimpse of Ebony looking at the grass and moss growing beneath our feet. It was indeed spring. "Fall is wonderful because I love bringing out my scarves and sweaters, boots, drinking hot apple cider, and even getting cozy by the fireplace with a nice blanket while I sit by the fire in my living room at home. My favorite part of winter is watching the snow fall and I love sledding! It is so much fun! What kind of winter activities do you like doing?" I asked while Ebony pulled out another piece of Drooble's gum and put it in her mouth and started chewing it.

Allison said that she was an outsider when she grew up as well. I smiled and I felt myself glow. I couldn't believe me and my best friend had so much in common, and I felt so grateful that she trusted me enough to tell me this. So I was going to trust her too.
"Thank you for telling me, Alli," I exclaimed somewhat gently, grinning at myself for the new nickname I gave her, "you know... I was a loner too. Just some freak girl who loves black. I used to be bullied, and I had no friends. But I'm really glad I have you now, really... thank you for helping me open myself up and for being such a good friend."
I could feel my nose turning red and my eyes starting to blur, so I blinked a few times to clear them. It had been a long time since I had felt like this.
"Hey... you know what? It's kind of late, I think we should head for dinner in the hall soon. I want to see you again soon, though. Where do you want to meet next time?" I prompted, looking at Allison enquiringly. I already had a few ideas, but since I suggested the Courtyard last time, I wanted Allison to decide.

"Thank you for telling me, Alli," Ebony said. "It is not a problem. I am always here to lend a listening ear. It's what friends are for. You're more than welcome to call me Allison, Alli, or anything that makes it easier for you to remember my name" I said. Ebony went on to tell me about her life and I couldn't help but notice we shared some similarities. She went on to tell me how she was a loner and used to be bullied as well. I felt so bad for her because I knew exactly how she felt because I've been in her shoes and it is painful. I'm really glad I have you now, really... thank you for helping me open myself up and for being such a good friend." she said. "I am really glad that I have you as a friend too. I find it hard to open up to people and I usually stay fenced in and keep my guard up but I only let it down if I know I can really trust the person and after I've gotten to know them." I said. "Hey... you know what? It's kind of late, I think we should head for dinner in the hall soon. I want to see you again soon, though. Where do you want to meet next time?" she said. "No wonder it's so late. We lost track of time. Now that you mention dinner, I am quite hungry myself. I don't want to to walk in the dark. I would also like to see you again soon. We should take a trip to Leaky Cauldron and get some Butterbeer (without the alcohol of course) if you fancy that" I said. We packed up our things and headed straight to the Great Hall for dinner.
