For one moment, the lizard owner seemed to take the bait as he asked the Hufflepuff not-so-nicely why George would want a spa. Marius was tempted to answer the question just because he wanted to be sassy to that kid, and at the same time he braced for the older boy's anger since it might get physical, but the black-haired boy was cooling down in all sudden. All right, maybe he was still kind of heated, but not that much. Instead, he merely asked Marius and the redhead to stay away from his lizard.

Was it the end of it? The Hufflepuff was so ready to leave with some feeling of victory inside, all he was waiting was for the lizard owner to turn away first to swell his pride even more (since it would look like that the older student backed away from a fight he himself had initiated).

At that time, a voice rang out, urging the two boys to fight. Marius turned his head to its source and saw that it came from the mouth of a short, ginger-haired girl. As if fuelling them, she told the older kid that Marius deliberately attempted to drown George, and told the first year that the other boy was bullying him.

At her words, Marius halted. Suddenly, he felt embarrassed. Even though the second year had not been very nice to either him or the redhead, that kid certainly did not bully them. If there was any bully in this argument, the Hufflepuff might as well be one - he had insulted George's owner on purpose.

Was he going to apologise, though? Absolutely not! It would hurt his pride. He was willing to drop this argument and let everything go, but to say sorry was another matter, and Marius was not going to do it.

His brown eyes turned back to the boy and studied his reaction upon hearing the short girl's words. Would he eat the bait this time, and believe her lie?

In his frustration, it took a moment for Nicholas longer than he would have otherwise liked to register the voice of yet another interloper. However, whereas the other redheaded first year had attempted to defuse the situation, this one seemed intent on pushing it further. Her calls for a fight, as well as her appeals to each of Nicholas and the other boy, did not go unnoticed. The second year's grimaced, his desire to not appear weak just about driving him to doing something foolish. Fortunately, such a foolhardy desire was quietened somewhat when he turned his attention toward the girl herself. He didn't recognise her by name, but he could place the face, a rather boisterous and annoying first year who'd taken it upon herself to waylay a birthday party. The memory was somewhat hazy, the exact details lost in the murk of youth, but Nicholas was certainly familiar with just how annoyed he'd been at the girl and her companion on the day. If she were the type of person calling for the altercation to expand in its scope, perhaps that wasn't for the best.

"Shut it," Nicholas hissed at the girl, and his attention returned to that of those students who'd decided to involve themselves in the rather mundane life of a bearded dragon.

The beginnings of a headache were starting to form, but even so, Nicholas found himself rather unenthused by the idea of adding any more fuel to the fire. He was angry, yes, but he'd no intention of becoming a dancing monkey, performing for the amusement of a peanut galley. More importantly, he'd no idea what he'd do with George. Effectively, he'd been hamstrung by his own decision to break with tradition and bring the lizard down to breakfast. That same decision that had formed the very impetus for the argument in the first place.

He groaned, the sound halfway between a growl and sigh, before he spoke to the boy, "Just be careful."

There was no point pushing for an apology, his sole desire was to forget the events of the morning and drown out such unpleasantness with whatever passed for fun at the rather dreary school. Preferably away from other people.

Sophia let out a short squeak at the harsh tone of the second year before sighing in relief.

Duelling was fine and dandy, and so was masculine roughhousing, but there was a time and place for fighting. The Great Hall on a weekend morning was not it.

Thankfully both boys proved reluctant to take the situation any further. As the situation calmed, Sophia stepped forward and pointed at the small lizard, calling out to the older boy.

“He’s very cute, by the way,” she said with a smile. She didn’t normally prefer lizards as a cute pet, but when the intensity of the situation had died down, she could finally appreciate the tiny creature.

Besides, this boy clearly loved his lizard, so maybe complimenting the little guy could help relieve some of the tension in his shoulders.

“I’m normally an owl person, but I can appreciate his adorable little eyes and tail,” she added as she hesitantly reached out a hand, silently asking permission to pet the little reptilian scallywag.

She glanced to the other two in the group, hoping they’d take the hint and join in on the peace offering.

Either way, she truly did adore the little guy, so it was worth a try for the chance to admire a cute pet.

As the lizard's owner told the ginger-haired girl to be quiet and seemed to retreat, Marius secretly felt quite glad. He was not afraid to get into a physical fight per se, but he did not want to get into trouble with the teachers, at least not today. Even though initially determined to let the older boy push him or slap his face, the first year now realised that if he was punched, he definitely would attack the lizard's owner back; and this would make both of them in the wrong.

However, when the black-haired boy turned his attention back to him and warned Marius to be careful in a way the Hufflepuff considered threatening, the eleven-year-old failed to stop himself from hissing, "Be careful about what?" His tone could not be mistaken as expressing ignorance or curiosity; it was clearly one of I'm-not-afraid-of-your-threat. It did not matter whether the other boy heard him or not, if he decided to pay Marius' speech some attention or not; for the first year, the only thing mattered was that he had said it.

The nice-looking redhead, on the other hand, still gave her best attempt to clear up the situation. Marius could hear her telling the black-haired boy of how cute his lizard actually was, and he could not help but wonder if she honestly meant it or if she simply tried to cool down the owner's temper.

“I-” Nicholas didn’t know how to react. His temper had been fading, the relative ridiculousness of his reaction had slowly dawned upon him, and in turn so too had that reaction faded. He was aware of the scene he’d created, granted, not alone, but the small boy who’d chucked George across the room was hardly relevant at the moment. But whereas the two boys had been all but set to tear eachother apart, the calmer redheaded girl seemed to take it upon herself to continue to settle the argument before it could come to anything approaching blows.

As far as approaches went, complementing his lizard was certainly the way to go about it. The second year was taken aback, so much so that he almost unconsciously removed the lizard from his shoulder and held it out for her to pet it.

That didn’t mean he forgave the brunette, but he was at least somewhat cognisant of his own role in what had come to be the altercation. Even if the boy insisted on being the largest git in sight.

“Careful you don’t throw someone else’s pet across the room, you moron,” Nicholas all but spat back.

He’d have clenched a fist but, alas, his hands were preoccupied with holding his lizard out for the attention of the peacekeeper. The whole conversation was getting nowhere, he’d get no apology, and he’d not achieve anything by continuing to trade verbal barbs with someone so inconsiderate.

“Y’know what? Don’t worry about it,” He half-spat half-drawled, snatching George back to his shoulder as he did so.

And then he was off, storming out of the Great Hall and back toward the common room. The absolute bloody never of some people.

Angrily, Marius smashed the goblet he was holding on the floor, cocoa spilled all over. Normally he was not interested in doing silly or negative things that would draw attention to himself, even reluctant. But things were different today; he would not even care if the entire school would gossip about what he did for a whole month to come.

"Ignoramus!" he shouted at the Gryffindor's missing back, without caring the slightest bit whether the older student could hear him and start another argument or if he could not and thus the shout was all in vain. The only important thing was that Marius had shouted what he wanted to.

What a crackbrained moron, the first year told himself. But what can you expect from a person who keeps a disgusting lizard for his pet? Nothing! These kind of people clearly have zero common sense of what is cute or pretty! They can't be trusted to make a good judgment in small stuff, so how can you expect them to be rational in important matters?

Crossing the room, the Hufflepuff plunged out of the Great Hall. Boy, he would slam the doors if only they were light and easy to move.
