Dear Harper Jordan,

My name is Sage Lilly, a first-year Gryffindor. You may have seen me around - or not. In any case, I'm your Quill Pal for this term. I'm sure we'll get along splendidly.

Now, I'm not sure how much to talk about myself without sounding like a complete arse. I suppose I'll start with the facts. My favourite subject is Charms, but ironically, I perform much better in Transfiguration. I like to think about the magic that keeps the Castle running and I'm amazed all over again. The complexity of such ancient magic

My family lives in Oxfordshire, England. It's a bit of a pain to have Hogwarts Alumni for parents - they're too nosy about school. I have a older brother named August*, or Gus as I like to call him, much to his great displeasure - a seventh-year Ravenclaw*. Again, you may or may not have met him - which is preferable, to be honest. Being compared to him isI can't wait for the bloke to graduate. Turner, my younger brother, is 8 years old and an absolute darling. He likes dragons.

What about you? How are you getting on so far? The first year is always the hardest, as they say. Looking forward to hearing from you. Take care.

Yours truly,

Hello Sage! I'm am so excited to be your Quill Pal and even more excited to get to know you!

As you know my name is Harper Jordan, and since you've decided to share a little bit about yourself I'll share a little bit about myself as well! My favorite subject has always been History, it doesn't matter what history I am studying, I always enjoy it. So, naturally I am finding History of Magic to be super fun! If I had to pick another class I liked, it would probably be Herbology. I didn't think it would be one that I enjoyed either, but it's surprisingly interesting to learn about plants!

I am getting along fine so far. I'm glad to see that there was this Quill Pal program, because I'll admit I was a bit nervous to get to know people. I'm not always the type of witch to go out and make friends with others. However, this will be nice and I too look forward to getting to know you.

Since you had mentioned which classes you liked so far, did you have any class that you haven't liked so far as well? I find Potions to be a bit hard, as I'm the type that likes more straightforward classes.

Sincerely,
Harper Jordan

Dear Harper,

I agree with you, Herbology is surprisingly fun - there are so many interesting plants out there. So far, the class that has given me the most trouble is Astronomy; I have a hard time recognizing patterns so identifying constellations gives me a bit of a headache. I suppose I will get better with more practice.

Honestly, I wrote in for the same reason! Meeting new people makes me nervous, so the idea of a written introduction sits well with me. I hope it makes for less awkward conversations in the future.

I'm sure you've heard about the Hexwizard Tournament. What do you think? It's been years since the last one. I hope we win, without any casualties this time. Have you seen the students from the other schools? The Castle is even more lively now that they're here. Most of them seem friendly enough, I s'pose. Then again, I'm not the sort to just randomly approach anyone.

Anyway, do you have any favourite food or drinks? Favourite colors? Hobbies? Any interesting facts about you?

Yours truly,
Sage

Dear Sage,

I'm glad we both share the surprised love for Herbology. I'm glad to find someone else who also likes it. It seems to be an even mix. All the witches and wizards I have met so far have either really enjoyed it or really disliked it.

I can definitely say that I agree with you on Astronomy! That class is difficult for me as well. It's hard to wrap my head around all the stars and such! It's cool for sure, but much more difficult than I thought it would be. However, I am honestly enjoying the challenge. It's nice to have a challenging class, because then I can push myself to do better. (I'm sort of a nerd like that.)

I'm glad that you decided to write! So far, it's been a thrill to write to you and get to know you! :)

I have heard of the Hexwizard tournament starting again this year. I'll admit I have a bit of mixed emotions about it. I haven't seen any students from other schools yet, but I'll admit I am a bit nervous to meet one of they do approach me. I'm not very good at conversation either. Especially when it comes to talking with someone I am unfamiliar with. I suppose that's a bridge that I need to cross when I get there. It's best not to fret about things that may not even happen, or you'll find yourself worrying an awful lot.

To answer your questions about me, I've grown quite fond of Butterbeer. I got some the other day, and it was amazing. So, right now, I'd say that's my favorite food. My favorite color is pink. Not just any pink though, I like light pink. I don't have many hobbies, I mostly just read and study in my free time. I like to keep my mind sharp. As for an interesting fact I'd say that sometimes I forget to have fun, because I am so focused on my studies that I don't even think about it. How about you? I am interested to see your answers to all of these questions as well.

Sincerely,
Harper Jordan

Dear Harper,

More people should come to like Herbology! Some think it’s gross working with plants but it’s actually quite a rewarding experience. I am naturally biased towards it; I don't think I've told you but my mum's a Herbologist. Haha, if you couldn't tell by my name, already!

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with Astronomy as well. As much as I want to ace my studies, I know some subjects will be more difficult than others. Let's do our best, anyway.

My thoughts exactly. It's a mixed bag for me, too. My parents never want to talk about it, and I don’t have the heart to ask any further. Earlier in the week, I'd gotten a Howler from them reminding me not to participate. Ack, I wasn't even planning to!

Not to worry, aside from the language barrier, I think that the students are as wary of us as we are of them. With luck, and many letters later, we'll master the art of socializing.

Wait, how did you get some Butterbeer?? Hogsmeade seems to be off-limits for us first-years. Did you sneak out by chance? Did some older students get it for you? I'm jealous! I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

My favourite colour would be purple, I like the paler shades the most! As for food and drink, my favourites would be banoffee pie and strawberry milk. In my spare time, I like to work with my hands, and while I'm not very artistic, my mum has taught me how to make soaps and candles and flower bookmarks - I think I’m decent at it. I also like to take long walks, and it’s always fun to find new secret hideouts. An interesting fact about me is that I'm really competitive; even my big brother is my rival - I don't think I'm like that with everyone though.

Yours truly,
Sage

Dear Sage,

Oh that's fascinating that your mum is an Herbologist! It does make it clear in my mind as to why you enjoy Herbology!

I agree, though Astronomy is hard, we owe it to ourselves to do our best. We should be proud of our grades no matter what they are as long as we continue to do our best.

My parents haven't spoken to me too much about the tournament. Mostly, my knowledge of it has come from what I've learned from other students. I don't think I will participate either, it's not really my style and I'm not sure my parents would be too fond of the idea if they'd found out I decided to. My father is a wizard, and has previously gone to Hogwarts, be he always focused more on his studies (like I intend to do) and my mother is a muggle who is very much overprotective and she would likely freak if she found out I joined. So, all in all I feel that it's best to stay out of it. But I definitely intend to cheer on my friends and fellow Ravenclaws who do want to join, as that is my part.

I saw some older students try it in the dorms, and the snuck it to me. I was only allowed a small gulp so that no one would get in trouble, but it was magnificent. I cannot wait until I am able to go and get a proper drink of it myself! My father told me about it and it's wonderful goodness, and I am excited to get a proper drink of it. ( Keep this between us though! I do not wish to get anyone in trouble)

I agree that paler tones of all colors are the prettier ones. I don't like bright tones as they often are a bit of an eye-sore to look at. I love strawberry milk as well I think that it's underrated. It is the prefect blend of sweet goodness. Taking walks sounds fun! I think if you are up for it, we should take a walk together sometime! It would be the perfect excuse for me to leave my studies for a moment and get some exercise.

All this talk about home and my parents has admittedly gotten me homesick. So, I do have to ask, what is one thing that you miss about being home?

Looking forward to hearing from you again,
Harper Jordan

Dear Harper,

I suppose that's just how parents are. Worrying is an expression of their love, and I guess we ought to be grateful for their concern.

Yes, I'd rather watch it all unfold. Whoever the champion will be, I believe they'll appreciate being cheered on. Merlin knows how much pressure there is in representing one's school. I hope the Tournament ends on a good note for everyone involved.

Aha, of course, my lips are sealed. When the time comes for which we're allowed to make day trips to Hogsmeade, I'll be sure to go with you! I'm curious about the local fair… and Butterbeer, of course.

I'm happy to know we have similar preferences! Sure, if you feel comfortable enough to meet up one day, we should have that walk along the Great Lake - it’s a lovely view on a sunny day. I heard there's a shaded spot that's perfect for a picnic. It should be quiet enough to do some reading, as well.

Home. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, indeed.

For obvious reasons, I miss my room, and that I don’t have to stick to a schedule. I miss exploring the woods behind our estate and foraging for wild lavender. Also, my youngest brother; he must feel lonely with both of his older siblings away at school.

My father, who works as a historian of some sort (magical artefacts researcher) for the Ministry, has a fair collection of both Muggle and magical items in our study - I like looking at curiosities and figuring out what they do.

When Papa allows me to, I practice writing with that self-inking quill called a pen. It’s fascinating - who knew Muggles could be so creative. But oh, the number of times I've caught myself trying to dip it into an inkwell! I feel so silly now thinking about it.

Ack, I’ve rambled for a bit. It’s your turn - what do you miss about being home?

Yours truly,
Sage
