The Courtyard, as usual, was bustling with students as free time began to encompass the entire school for the day. It was currently 16:20, and Hunter was already within the courtyard, ahead of many other students, having enjoyed the quiet sound of a few students chattering, and the gentle cool breeze of fall. He was sitting crisscrossed with his back against one of the stone pillars within the courtyard, minding his own business. He had a stack of books with him that was all of his own that he bought from Flourish and Blotts before having come to Hogwarts; however, there was one book that didn't fall under being his own possession. It was a book he selected from his common room's library that intrigued him greatly. The book went into descriptions and records of wands owned by significant figures throughout the history of the wizarding world. He had this book laid wide open, accompanied by three other opened books, all arced in front of him. The number of words from all four books on each page could cause some students to have a headache from just the sight, but others like Hunter found ease and comfort when reading each sentence found in them. The other three books Hunter had laid open were: "Fantastic Beast and Where to Find them," "A History of Magic," and "Hogwarts, A History." He believed that these books could give him some more thought experiments on what the magical animal cores of wands could mean, and that the history of wizards and who they were could also bring insight on similar traits between similar wands.
Other students across the courtyard were enjoying their loud conversations, playing a few games of gobstones, or were studying for any classes they were to have the very next day. Many of these activities were of course done between people, thus Hunter being rather alone in the courtyard made him seem like a bit of an oddball out. Classes were over, and he decided to spend the time reading and understanding more about the new world he was brought into. At the start of the school year, he originally had doubted if he was correctly sorted into the right house; however, within a short amount of time, he no longer began to question the choices of the Sorting Hat and enjoyed his time within the house of Ravenclaw. Although, now that Hunter had time to think, he began to doubt if his very wand was also a right choice for him. He removed his wand from his robe, and placed it beneath the middle book. A 21-centimeter aspen wood with a snallygaster heartstring, an odd combination, or perhaps it was the perfect combination; Hunter was unsure. He remembers the shopkeeper at Ollivander who gave him this wand, stating something along the lines that wands choose their wizards, and rambling on as if wands were sentient. It sounded crazy and nonsensical to Hunter, but lately, his practice of spells in Charms and other classes has been rather difficult for him as of lately. His doubt over his wand has seemed to start his spells to become rather hard to cast. He assumed it was just a confidence issue, and thought if he could find a bit about wands, he could then boost his self-confidence.
"Okay... Let's see... Merlin, the most famous wizard of all time. He's even mentioned in some stories by Muggles, but most seem to be of just fantasy to them... Alright, Mr. Prince of Enchanters, what did you have?" Hunter began reading and flipping through the text of each book, using the index as a guide for mentions of Merlin: "Apart of King Arthurs Court...Formed the Order of Merlin to help protect Muggle kind... sorted into House Slytherin?!.. Wait, Aha! 'Unfortunately, since Merlin's grave could not be found, it cannot be confirmed what wand wood or core he utilized. However, many have speculated that his wand was of English Oak.'" Hunter quoted from the lines of the books he was reading, and would read and say his thoughts out loudly since he tended to be alone most of the time when studying. "Speculation isn't really helpful. It seems you're also the Prince of Mystery," Hunter stated. He soon found himself focusing on each word and page that mentioned wands throughout these books. He had already done this before a bit in the common room, but now his full attention was towards reading. His own thoughts and voice began to be the only thing he could hear, as the conversations of other surrounding students soon began to be drowned out by them. (WC 765).

There had been a lot of things that Enrico was meant to be taking care of, be it from the numerous amount of homework he was supposed to be doing, to more personal things that required his attention and genuine interest to take care of. But the Hufflepuff was more interested in wasting his own time by doing anything but what was required of him. Only a few days ago he got in trouble for not completing a task during Transfiguration. There was no denying that he found the subject far too complex to understand, and the fact that his wand seemed to not want to work didn't help either.
That was one of the many things he needed to find more about, but truth be told he wasn't particularly keen or aware of who to talk to. The idea of approaching a Professor about his wand scared him for all the right reasons; he hadn't been the most behaving student and he feared that they wouldn't appreciate him trying to waste their time. Regardless of how mischievous Enrico was, he was still aware of how problematic he could be. But that was the best part of it. As long as he was self-aware, everything was right in the world.
That being said, during a Charms class a while ago, Enrico and his classmates were asked to perform a spell after weeks of careful practice and co-ordination, and it came to no one's surprise when rather than sending the object into a still and calm levitation, it instead flew out of the window to never be seen again. On another occasion, he set a table on fire, and a while back turned a housemate's robes to a bright pink - but that was intentional, and that was probably the weirdest part of it all, that he had managed to get his wand to work once throughout all this entire time. Out of all the many occasions it had to work, it only did when Enrico was asking to get in trouble. It almost felt as if the wand is stimulated to encourage chaos and mischief... odd.
Whilst taking a walk in the coldness of the courtyard, and thinking about his many mishappenings, Enrico couldn't help but smirk and cackle to himself about it all. It was almost satisfying to know that he had managed to do so many things using magic, regardless of how many times he actually failed, or how many times he yelled at his wand to get it to work. It was a hideous thing - his wand - not the most formal or petite of wooden objects. It was rough and bulky, it had an oddity to it and the fact that it was green out of all the natural colours, made it even eerier.
As he observed his wand and tried to look all professional and fancy while staring at it - as if he was a professional of some sort - Enrico's focus gazed upon a particular boy doing things one would usually do in the library, not in the courtyard. Rico lowered his wand and tucked it away, he didn't want to come off hostile while approaching the stranger. Didn't do anyone any good, especially for first encounters.
"Why you readin' out here?" He asked bluntly, as if it was any of his business. But there was no denying that it was a rather weird choice of location to study in - that was until Enrico took a good look around him and noticed a couple more students doing the same exact thing. Maybe he was just not good enough of a student to understand or be able to relate. He oh'd to himself in silence.
"And what are you reading anyway?" He asked curiously, trying to cover up the fact that his first, original question was stupid. As he tried his best to read the words off the books laying in front of him, but his sight, even with the help of his glasses, didn't particularly help. Everything he looked at looked like a clash of jumbling letters dancing to a popular song.
"I heard you say something about mystery and prince. Is that the title of the book?" He finally took a seat down as if he had just been invited to do so, placing his own back against a pillar facing forward the new acquaintance.
"I'm Enrico, but if you wanna do introductions formally, I'm Enrico Gathorne." He said, whilst offering his left (because Enrico didn't know basic etiquette) hand for a shake.

Hunter's focus was more elevated than usual. He tuned out most of the surrounding sounds, and dedicated most of his mind's attention towards the books he had in front of him. Hunter was a boy of study, he excelled within his classes and dedicated most of his time to knowing the new world he lived in. He read through each page at a rather extreme pace. He soon found himself lost within the words, they began to fly through his head and became stuck: "Thunderbird feather...Troll whisker...Dragon Heartstring...Jackelope Antler...Ashwood...Che-". It must have been a couple of minutes, seconds, or hours? But it definitely took Hunter a bit to notice the other student sitting across from him.@Enrico Gathorne
The young wizard across from Hunter had dark-colored hair, and wide eyes that just read "curiosity" behind a pair of glasses. A few freckles and skin that only appeared yellow since Hunter had his glasses on like usual. Hunter was rather focused on his reading, and had no clue who this boy was, nor what he wanted. He sat across from Hunter with an expression as if he was waiting for a response. Hunter lifted his yellow-tinted glasses slightly, and saw the yellow colors on the other boy's robes. "A Hufflepuff?," Hunter thought. Due to his glasses (which are for fashion, not prescribed), he tended to have an issue knowing the houses of other students, but it only took a quick glance for him to fix that. During the whole interaction, Hunter avoided eye contact with the boy. His anxiety from speaking with other students wasn't as bad as it was before, but he really couldn't deal with making eye contact with others. There was something about the eyes of other students that felt off to Hunter. He couldn't pinpoint it, but he tried his best to avoid it at all. He already noticed the boy's hand, how long had it been out? Nonetheless, Hunter lifted his hand and shook the boy's left hand.
Hunter faced towards his books again, and decide to lift his wand in a horizontal way to avoid pointing it at himself or the other student: "21-centimeter, aspen wood with a snallygaster heartstring. Snallygasters are reptilian-bird hybrid creatures. Supposedly they have bullet-proof hides and steel fangs that can destroy almost anything. Aspen wood on the other hand seems to have been recorded by some rather powerful duelist, theirs even records of a dueling club known as 'The Silver Spears.'"Hunter was rambling some nonsense, but it sounded smart. Hunter's wand was as he stated, a length of 21 centimeters, and it had a rather adequate ivory design. It almost resembled stone more than wood, and looked rather sturdy as well. "Wands, a wizard's best friend as some might say-... S-sorry, my manners. I'm Hunter, Hunter Argentum," Hunter felt the boy already revealed his name, and felt too afraid to ask him. "My wand, it... it just isn't working like I feel it should. Like I said, snallygaster heartstring and aspen wood, clearly a wand perfect for dueling, but..." Hunter spoke out loud, again trailing a bit off in thought. Hunter placed his wand down, he felt stumped. He was having trouble in believing his wand was truly meant for him. No mess occurred when he received it back at Ollivanders, and he was able to cast a couple of spells already; however, now it seemed like it wouldn't work. "How about your wand? A Hufflepuff like yourself must certainly have an interesting wand, right? Perhaps the wood or core is similar to some of the most powerful wizards in history or most " Hunter never had a chance to look at another student's wand, the thought of it piqued his interest. His head was still faced down, overall still looking over the books he had laid out, waiting for a response.

There was a certain oddity to the boy, as he spoke to himself while Enrico remained in his place, mostly confused by the fact that it took him a while to realize that he was even there in the first place. Though the Hufflepuff was often impatient and found receiving attention a satisfying way to boost his esteem, he had enough in him to wait for Hunter’s response. It was admirable to see him go off about wands and the latter. Enrico was intrigued by the subject, except he didn’t particularly know anything about it. Knowing that he owned a wand that barely worked was more than enough for his feeble, little brain.
And then everyone’s quickest assumption rolled in and soon Enrico found another hot topic to jump into and express all of his opinions about.
“That I am!” He responded with a clear sight of enthusiasm. Every time anyone assumed the House he was sorted in, Enrico felt the urge to ask how’d they guessed so. But the answer to such question was at often times too obvious, and so he never bothered. Truth be told, even if he did intend on opening up about his house, and possibly that of Hunter’s, he would have been quickly gotten interrupted by another series of muttering. It was becoming weird to a certain extent, but not weird enough to throw Enrico off. His nose turned red as he held his laughter in, not wanting to make it look as if Rico was making fun of the boy.
Enrico had the decency to let him go on about it until he snapped back into reality and introduced himself. Hunter was a predatorial name in its own right, and had the short lad not been living in the magical world for a few months - living with people who had five names - he would have been creeped out. Nothing came as a surprise anymore.
Had it not already been obvious already, alas, Enrico learned that Hunter was reading about wands. An interesting topic at best, except he the Hufflepuff was having trouble with his own, and so automatically, he hated everything and anything that had to do with it, solely because it was not pleasing him in any manner. He had been having trouble with it ever since he got to showcase his skills… if one could call them that. So it came as quite a shock to hear that somebody else could relate. Enrico genuinely thought that he was the only person failing miserably and getting his wand to work, especially, when he needed it the most.
“You too?!” He yelled with excitement, surprised that he was not alone. “I hate to admit it, but same. Every time I get to cast a spell during a lesson, for instance, it just doesn’t work, or pulls a completely different spell! It’s wild, really, but frustrating.”
Maybe Hunter could help? Not in a way where he’d completely fix the problem within minutes, but seeing as they both seemed to share the same problem, it seemed like the stars had aligned for them to come across each other. A shame Enrico couldn’t remember the details about his wand. Naturally, that would have been a great starting point.
“Uhhh… to be honest? I can’t recall the core… or the wood… was it goblin? No… can’t be… goat-eater… yes, yes! Troll whisker! Can’t believe I just remembered but I’m sure it was troll whisker. Now that I think about it, that’s pretty disgusting, not that I know how a troll looks like, but do you think that could be why it ain’t working? Maybe the core is just not good?”

Hunter was caught a bit aback by the other boy's excitement, and his slight remarks about core wands and woods. It took Hunter a few seconds to place his wand back down, and go back to flipping through pages upon pages of books. The amount of wording from the history of names was rather overwhelming. It took Hunter a few more minutes, at times he was caught off a bit by the more interesting text that he found. However, he eventually found a small mention of Troll-Whisker and began to read it out louder for himself and the other student:
"Troll whisker..." Hunter started at first. However, the mention of such an odd core made Hunter think a little oddly at first. He looked up at the other student and removed his glasses, "Troll..." he said again. Hunter was slightly examining the other boy, if anything he could have made comments about how the other boy looked and what key features he had that did or didn't resemble that to a troll. The sort of thoughts one should keep to themselves and would end up describing someone like an object rather than a person. Hunter let out a slight smirk as he looked at the other student's large curious eyes, but eventually looked back down at his books: "Unfortunaetly the only other wizard I can find is Sir Cadogan, a wizard well known for his bravery. So brave he was placed into Gryffindor and is sometimes called insane for the brave acts he committed.
Hunter was unsure if this was the sort of information the other student would like to hear, but it was something Hunter could analyze and ponder about. The only mentioned wizard of Troll-Whisker is claimed to be an incredibly brave person. However, another student in front of Hunter who wasn't Gryffindor wielded Troll-whisker. Perhaps the other boy was just as brave as any other Gryffindor, or perhaps he got the wrong wand as Hunter might suspect with his own. Hunter pondered a bit more, and looked at the boy trying to figure out if he was missing something. Eventually, Hunter decided to try a sort of experiment. He left his books open, but moved his wand to where the base was pointing at him, and the end tip was pointing at the other student. Hunter placed his hand over the back end of the wand, but didn't raise it from the ground just yet: "I'm going to cast a curse at you now. If you can't recall, curses are the worst of dark spells. So I suggest you do something quickly." This, of course, was a bluff. Hunter didn't make too many flaunty or fast actions in order to not draw too much attention. Was the other boy brave, Hunter wondered? Or perhaps he was more on the emphasis of insane, such as how Sir Cadogan was considered "Insanely brave." Perhaps strong emotions were what made Troll-whisker a fascinating core. It mostly depended on what the other boy was bound to do next. Or perhaps he was bound to notice Hunter's bluff and call him out on it. Hunter was pretty much relaxed, and didn't give off feelings of malice or focus based on posture and facial expression. Although, was the other boy willing to take that risk? (WC 526)

The mention of a brave knight gave Enrico the jingles and the shakes. He had always been an enthusiast of knights, heroes and brave warriors who saved princesses from their captors and tall towers, who rode white horses into battle and worse shiny silver armour with golden embroidery of thorns and roses. A helm with the most extravagant feather with the colours of a peacock's train. For a second or two - or perhaps ten - Enrico lost himself in thought and emerged himself in a fantastical world that only existed in his head. Hunter was now a princess in a pink satin dress that glittered and sent anyone who looked at it for far too long blind. But that train of thought was soon terminated when the idea of a boy like Hunter started weeping and begging for help.
He lost his words and stuttered his way back, “In- insane?! I can see why anyone would think he lost his mind if his wand behaved as mine does.” Enrico confessed, disappointed by how much of an imperfect knight he would be. The Hufflepuff knew he wasn’t the bravest boy to ever exist, there were goals and objectives that drove him to be a protector of sorts, however, cowardice and delusion often got the best of him. However, he was not willing to be honest about it. The last thing he wanted was to be considered a coward by any of his peers. No no, he was strong and fierce, a defender of nature and the flowers he plucked, the grass he stepped on and the trees he climbed.
However, before he could even allow Hunter to be impressed by the many great achievements of his lifetime, the boy found himself in quite the pickle. The book enthusiast had let Enrico in on his plan. He had told him, quite frankly, everything Enrico needed to know, except why. His cheeks flushed a tomato red and boiled so hot he felt his ears letting off steam. His now-sweaty hands panicked and reached for every part of his body to find where his wand was hiding away. The boy seemed to have forgotten that he was probably the only student in the school who tucked his wand inside his socks, against his bare ankle, and then he had the audacity to wonder why he tripped so often.
He swiftly bent down for it, “wait! Hold on! No!” His voice squeaked in panic, his hands grabbing his green sharp wand from its hilt but were quick to accidentally let it slip away. The tip of the wand hit the gound first, and a spark emerged from the contact between the ground and the wand. Enrico didn’t understand science nor magic if he had to be humble about it, but he could swear that that bounce set the wand straight up and from its tip - now aiming at him - sparked another glimmer that shot a wave of blue light that sent his body in a shivering cold and a spark of electricity, both at once.
Enrico was dazed, his tongue hanging out, glasses sitting awkwardly leaning vertically, and somehow found himself sitting with his legs spread across the ground.
“Iz this enaff evidenz?” He tried hard to ask.

Hunter was rather surprised to see the rather unique Enrico begin to act a bit wild and confused. His first reaction was to search for his wand, rather than run. Hunter took note, but he was confused in his analysis of the boy as Enrico couldn't find his wand at first. Then, when the odd boy did find his wand, it fell to the ground and had gone to the worse situation possible. Hunter took out a journal and wrote in large letters: 'Enrico Gathorne, Murphy's Law?'
He closed the rest of his books and placed them in a stack. Hunter then walked over to the daze Enrico to check on the lad. He felt sorry the boy just went through probably the most improbable attempt at taking out one's own wand. What's more, Hunter was again hit with a bit of confusion at the realization that Enrico had his wand sheathed within his own socks. That was the deal-breaker. Certainly brave, and a bit hardy from taking a hit like that, but Hunter determined that "insane" seemed a lot more fitting for the lad. Now the question was what kind of insanity did Enrico have? Was he Insanely brave, Insanely creative, perhaps insanely strong or emotional? Hunter wanted to know, and then perhaps he could figure out the issue that Enrico and he are having with their wands.
Still, how far was Hunter willing to go? How far was he going to push Enrico in this study? So far it wasn't going well, and Hunter wanted to make sure Enrico was at least alright. Walking over towards Enrico, Hunter held up four fingers, "You alright Enrico? How many fingers am I holding up? Answer right or you'll be cursed." Again, another bluff at a curse.

The boy’s tongue started to feel as if it was being pinched at every second. The entirety of his body, on the other hand, had become numb, yet his skin was sending waves of electrifying shock, almost as if it intended on releasing the energy he had got shot at with back. Every single string of hair on his head was now striking upwards, just like how a lunatic scientist would be depicted in a children’s book. One could say that he was struck by lightning, and quite literally so.
It took him a while to get himself all back together. Even his own voices sounded so hollowing to himself, and Hunter’s was just as eerie. What he asked wasn’t even clear, but when the other boy raised his hand and showed up four fingers, Enrico could only assume what he was actually asking. He twitched his eyes and tried his hardest to get a clear view, his glasses still standing in an awkward position as the Hufflepuff didn’t even realize that they were sitting so on his face. He imagined that if he tried to touch his face, then he’d send another electrifying bolt from his fingers. And if any further blasting energy went through him, then he was certain he’d explode.
“Twelve fingers?” Enrico answered - with his lisp more evident than ever - not realizing that such a number of fingers was quite frankly impossible. But everything he was viewing had tripled, so no one could really blame the poor boy. That didn’t excuse him from being absolutely terrible at mathematics, however. The day he learned that that was not actually a subject taught at Hogwarts was the greatest day of his entire life. Or maybe second best, the first one was that one time when he was four and accidentally watered on his aunt’s wedding dress.
“You see what I mean now?” Enrico now asked desperately as he was slowly coming back to reality, shaking his head from left to right.
“I don’t know what I’m gonna do about it. Do you think I can change it? I’m pretty sure it’ll be the end of me.” He offered his hand to Hunter to pull him up, hoping that he won’t also electrify him in the process.
“Or maybe I could find someone to talk to, someone who would understand. But who?”

Hunter's robes began to act up a bit. They began to attract and levitate a bit towards Enrico, most likely a reaction to his new static nature. Hunter lifted himself up and took one small step back in fear that either Enrico was going to be shocked again, or Hunter was going to be shocked as well. Hunter found it rather intriguing how Enrico's wand was acting up in such an erratic way. For Hunter, his wand merely just didn't act at all. It didn't roar, speak, or breathe lightning as a failed attempt in casting a spell. His wand didn't listen and rather just ignored him. As for Enrico's wand, it had more of a violent response when Enrico attempted to use it at all.
Hunter sighed as Enrico responded with the term "12," not because it was the wrong term but rather because it meant they had to be a lot more careful going on. Hunter noticed Enrico's hand and decided to help lift him up. It didn't seem like Enrico was any closer to solving his wand problem than Hunter was. Perhaps insanity was the answer. Enrico seemed a little insane in appearance and personality, and the core of his wand was utilized by another crazy knight in the past. Maybe a new turn on the events is what they needed. Perhaps Enrico's wand was just as insane as him and needed a bit of reasoning.
Hunter thought a bit, but he couldn't quite wrap his mind around acting insane. Anything he did that could be considered "insane" was most likely just due to a mistake on his part. Also, could a person act insane on purpose? It seemed more like an unconscious trait that people had and couldn't always control. He thought back to the gentle owner of Ollivanders and took note of how he spoke as if the wands themselves were alive. Hunter still wouldn't strongly believe in such a thing, but perhaps it could work. It was worth a try, right? "Have you tried... talking to your wand, Mr. Gathorne? Perhaps its upset with you or something. I don't think its someone, but rather something you should speak with." Hunter wasn't confident in his answer, but he assumed that an insane individual like Enrico would be willing enough to try such an idea. If it worked, then they were getting somewhere. If not, then they'll have to try something else. Hopefully neither will result in another shock to Enrico.
