Shanelle was hunched over the book, busy reading away. She had been reading about Uric the Oddball, and doodling with her hand. She was reading out loud the paragraph.

He was considered to be one of the most unconventional and weirdest wizards in- She was about to continue reading, but she felt something tickle her feet. She looked down, and frowned. Nothing was there. She shrugged, that might have just been her imagination. She went back to reading, but spotted what was tickling her just now. It was a rat. It wasn’t big, but it was a rat.

Not that Shanelle was particularly scared of rats, she almost screamed when she saw it. She only barely kept the scream in when she remembered she was in a library. She held the scream in, and when she took another look at the rat.

“Awwww.” She said, The rat was actually kind of cute. Its owner must have taken good care of it. She mustered up all her courage and picked up the rat, just in time to hear someone whispering, “Rascal.” Shanelle turned around and saw a boy. She remembered him, Simon, from the Rehearsal Room. She held the rat in the palm of her hands and held it in front of her. “Hey, is this your rat?” She asked.

Shanelle put the rat in Simon’s outstretched palms as he spoke. She could tell he wasn’t very happy with his pet at that moment. “Having to take care of a pet isn’t easy, especially when you’re doing it alone.” She said softly. While she had never owned a pet before, she could see how busy someone would be if they had a pet, it is quite some work. “How long have you had him for?” She said, then realising that he was standing, and she was still sitting. She quickly motioned for him to sit down next to her, to avoid awkwardness.


“Sometimes I wish I had a pet, then I’d always have someone with me. But I also don’t want to have a pet, because I would be so sad when it passes away after we bond. And I don’t think my parents would trust me with a pet so soon.” She laughed. As much as she wanted a pet, she didn’t think she would be able to take good care of it. Simon was such a responsible person, yet he cannot be in control at all times. It must be a tricky job.

“It’s alright, pets do run around a lot of times.” She smiled in memory of pets running around the school with their owners chasing after them. “So don’t worry about it.”

Shanelle nodded solemnly, understanding the seriousness of the situation. “I’m so sorry to hear about that, it must have been hard.” She said, serious and gentle. She hadn’t been through much pain, but she did get the feeling of loss.

“That was very brave of her, rescuing Rascal. I’m sorry for your loss.” She felt sadness overwhelm her, as it always had when she learns about the death of others. “Alexa was so young, there was so much she could have done.” She whispered, more to herself than to Simon.

“I think Rascal looks perfectly happy with you.” She said, smiling sweetly at the rat. She gave Simon a look before reaching out to pat the fur of the little creature. She let the rat go when it moved out of her hands towards the Hufflepuff scarf that Simon put on one of the chairs. She watched with a lingering smile as the little rat climbed around before relaxing and snoozed.

“He’s just like a little baby. Enthusiastic the moment, and asleep the next. Pets, kids, babies are just like that, unpredictable.” Shanelle said, feeling mature and wise after she said that. For a moment, she felt like a parent. But the moment passed, and she returned to being the 12 year old who just started her first year at Hogwarts.

“Of course! And it sure had been a while.” Shanelle said, while packing away the books on her table. “I’ve been pretty good so far, I feel like Hogwarts is the right place for me.” She said cheerfully, eager to share.

Shanelle nodded along, agreeing with what Simon said. “That is true, I don’t think I have ever heard about a negative experience here, everyone I’ve asked had had an amazing journey here. This place is truly magical.” She joked. But she did mean it, everyone she had met so far had thought that this place was amazing, and it was. Shanelle knew for sure that Gryffindor was the place she was suppose to be in, it was a place filled with like-minded people. The Gryffindors were brave, enthusiastic and passionate, just like the young girl.

“Gryffindor is definitely the right fit for me. It feels like a home for me now. Everyone around me is like me, I think I fit in.” She explained. She hadn’t really talked about this before to someone else, but now that she had said it, and felt like she indeed belonged. “That’s cool! My mother was a Hufflepuff too, and my father a Gryffindor. So I guess I would be in Hufflepuff if I wasn’t a Gryffindor.” She wasn’t sure why Simon seemed distinct for that moment, but she knew he did. He must not want to talk about it, which is why Shanelle pretended not to notice anything about it.

“I’ve been great so far, nothing has really changed, still kind of lonely and trying to give up with my school work.” She said, sighing after feeling like she didn’t really do much since the last time they had met. “What have you been up to? Anything fun?” She returned the question, trying to catch up.
