Dragons are Dumb

Time: 2:00 pm in the afternoon
Jack was bored and in a foul mood. Those were often a bad combination resulting in some disaster or another, but the boy couldn't help himself. He needed to let off some steam. The question was, how? And how to do so without getting into trouble?
Instigating a fight sounded like a bad idea and Jack didn't fancy the idea of getting hit anyway, so he decided eventually to take a trip to the library in the hopes of reading something and cooling his head. Unfortunately, once he was there, he didn't know what to read. There were so many books to check out.
Eventually, the boy grabbed a couple of his favorite history books from the history section of the library and sat down to study them when he noticed the girl at the table reading a book on dragons of all things. He made a face. Dragons? Why those?
It reminded him of his days at muggle school where that seemed to be everyone's favorite mythical creature. Jack, on the other hand, thought they were quite overrated, especially when compared to the dragons of muggle lore. Real dragons in the wizarding world couldn't even talk.
Going over to the girl, he tapped her lightly on the shoulder and asked, "Excuse me, but what are you reading up on dragons for? Do you have some sort of assignment due on them?" Surely she couldn't have been reading about them just for fun.

The Ravenclaw had browsed the shelves until she came across the dragons section and an idea struck her. It was honestly quite odd that she had never bothered to read up on dragons, considering that her father was a Dragonologist and he was always very enthusiastic when talking about them. Adelaide would love to be able to engage in a conversation with dragons when she next saw her father, so she had grabbed a book on dragons and sat down at one of the tables to begin reading.
She wasn't sure how long she had sat there for, thoroughly engrossed in the book (which was a lot more interesting that she originally thought it would be) until someone tapped her shoulder. The light tap still managed to make her jump slightly, the blonde hadn't even realized anyone was near her. She looked up, quirking an eyebrow at the boy that she didn't recognize. "No, I don't have an assignment due on dragons. I'm just reading up on them because they're fascinating creatures. Why? Do you want the book? You can have it once I'm done reading, though there are plenty of more books on dragons over there." She pointed in the direction of the dragons section before turning her attention back to the book, hoping the boy would leave her alone.

"'Fascinating creatures'?" Jack repeated, his disbelief evident. "Lethifolds are fascinating creatures. Merfolk and centaurs are fascinating creatures. Dragons are just giant lizards who fly and breathe fire. What's so fascinating about that?"
He shook his head and ignored her when she pointed in the direction of the other dragon books, seating himself at her table with the history books he had grabbed. Looking for one in particular, he opened it up and pointed to a passage about wizard involvement in the first world war.
"Did you know that in World War I, they tried to utilize dragons in wizard warfare, but the dragons were too dumb to listen to anyone but Newt Scamander? They had to scrap the idea because the creatures couldn't be trained properly. Muggle stories make them out to be intelligent, majestic creatures but in real life, they can't even talk. Do you know how disappointing that is?"
He sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Centaurs and Merfolk have languages and culture. They're far more interesting than some silly dragons. Centaurs are capable of human speech and one even taught at Hogwarts for a time. They're gifted in divination. Merfolk domesticate other creatures like Grindylow, Hippocampus, and Lobalug. But dragons? There are only ten known species and none are as cool as the ones in muggle stories."

She raised an eyebrow as the boy pointed to a passage in his book, "Well, they are dangerous and volatile creatures. They're not necessarily meant to be trained or used by humans. Although, since my father is a Dragonologist, I can't say much on that. He trains them, though he does say they're extremely dangerous and volatile, as I just said. Muggle stories make a lot of stuff up; that's the point of them. They believe magic isn't real when clearly," she gestured all around them, "it is. I'm not really seeing your point." For someone who seemed to dislike dragons, the boy surely knew a lot about them.
The blonde also leaned back in her chair, mirroring the boy's movements. She crossed her arms over her chest, feigning a dramatic yawn as the boy spoke. "Wow, that's fascinating," she replied, her tone clearly sarcastic, "I definitely asked you to tell me that. Just because you think this magical creature or that magical creature is more interesting than dragons, doesn't mean that's true. Unfortunately for you, your opinion isn't golden. Or needed at all, really. I know that must be hard to hear," her face was a mask of mock sympathy, "but the truth hurts. Every creature acts differently, and some are more territorial than others. Dragons are highly territorial, it's said that no more than three dragons share the same territory. Also, did you know that with the Chinese Fireball, the females are generally larger and dominant over the males? But if you think dragons aren't 'cool' or are 'disappointing', how about you go stand next to one? I'd love to see how long it takes for you to wet yourself in fear." She smiled innocently at the boy.

Jack made a derisive sound at the girl's rebuttal. "What's so cool about being able to breathe fire? And 'their scales are beautiful'? How shallow can you be?" he asked, rolling his eyes. "What could be so admirable or fascinating about a creature you wouldn't even dare to venture near?"
He blinked when she pointed to a passage in his own book, then frowned. "I don't get it. if they're so volatile and dangerous, why even bother trying to work with them at all?" His mouth twisted when she brought up muggle stories. "Ever heard of the story Dragonheart? If dragons were like the one in that movie, I'd like them a lot better. But they arn't, so I don't see what the big deal is. Clearly you just think they're all that because your father works with them."
His brows shot up as the girl dared to fake a yawn. 'The truth hurts' was what he was often telling other people. He might have laughed if he wasn't so irritated.
"I still have yet to hear anything that makes dragons any more special than any other creature," Jack grumbled, shutting his history book closed. "They're just dumb animals, same as all the rest. Who cares if the females are larger and more dominant? And I said they're disappointing, not safe. Being dangerous doesn't make them cool. Why on Earth would I want to go near one of those brutes?"

She shrugged, "Some people like to attempt to train and tame volatile creatures. My father has just always been interested in dragons, and so obviously wanted to pursue a career and work with them. He says he loves it and it's a very fulfilling career," she blinked in confusion as the boy mentioned a Muggle story she had never heard of, and a weird word 'movie' that she had also never heard of, "No, I haven't heard of Dragonheart nor do I know what a 'movie' is. Is it the Muggle word for book? What are dragons like in Dragonheart, then, if they interest you so much? And no, I don't think dragons are 'all that' because my father works with them. Granted, he is the reason I've been researching them, but I originally started researching them to be able to talk to him about dragons and have since found them to be quite interesting."
She smirked in satisfaction as the boy's eyebrows shot up, likely in surprise or irritation. "They're just dumb animals just like all the rest?" she repeated in surprise, "I thought you were trying to say that dragons are lame compared to every other magical creature, not that every animal is dumb and lame," she raised an eyebrow at him in question, "and I mentioned that females are more dominant than the males because with humans it's usually the opposite, even though that's stupid if I do say so myself. Though it's interesting to see how other creatures act. Plus, saying they're 'disappointing' is basically saying they're lame and not dangerous or scary, which is basically saying they're safe. So go ahead, stand next to one if you think they're so disappointing. I bet you wouldn't."

"The fact that you think the looks of dragons or their scales matter at all is what makes you shallow in my book," Jack answered back. "Appearances don't matter to me."
The Slytherin made a face when the girl began talking about her father. "Well, those 'some people' who like to attemtp to train and tame volatile creatures are fools who are likely to get themselves killed. It doesn't even sound like your father knows why he's interested in dragons."
When the younger student admitted she didn't know what Dragonheart or even what a 'movie' was, Jack blinked. It took him a moment to realize why. "...You're a pureblood, aren't you?" he commented at last. Then he laughed. "No wonder you're so naive. A movie is a story told by a recording of people acting," he explained. "And the movie Dragonheart is about a dragon who gives his life to save the life of a human. No real dragon would ever bother doing anything like that."
He backed off a bit when he heard the girl was researching dragons to be able to talk to her father about them. He supposed he couldn't fault her for that. Still, that didn't make dragons any better in his opinion.
"...I guess it's true that it's interesting to see how other creatures act, especially if they're different from us," he conceeded. "But disappointing is not the same as safe just as dangerous or scary is not the same as interesting or exciting. It's true I don't find animals in general to be all that interesting because they don't have sentience," he told her. "But maybe if humans were like animals in some ways, like keeping to themselves or not risking their lives for others, humans might be better off."

Her eyes narrowed, "People are interested in things because they're interesting, because it makes them happy, because they have a passion and a drive for it. I'm sure if my father wasn't interested in dragons he wouldn't have became a Dragonologist." Honestly, what was wrong with this boy? All Adelaide wanted was to have a chill Sunday, but of course she couldn't get that. Of course some silly teenage boy had to come and ruin it for her. Seriously, what normal person goes up to someone and decides to tell them they actually don't like what they're reading as if it had anything to do with them in the first place? It wasn't as if Adelaide was purposefully trying to rile this boy up by sitting there and innocently reading a book.
Her eyes narrowed further when the boy started laughing at her, "What's so wrong with being a Pure-blood?" She said defensively, "I'm not naive just because I don't know muggle things that I have never been exposed to or have had the chance to see," the blonde pretended to not be interested when the boy was explaining what a movie and what Dragonheart was, even though it was interesting. She always had an affinity for learning about muggle things, but she wasn't about to tell him that, "yes, well, of course real dragons aren't going to do that, it doesn't mean they're less cool than these fictional dragons you speak about."
Her lips turned up in a slight smile as the boy agreed with one of her points, "Exactly. It's always interesting to see how other creatures live and act. Look," she sighed, "it's completely fine if you don't find dragons or animals all that interesting, you're allowed to have your own opinion, but is it really necessary to come over to me when I'm minding my own business and reading?" She raised an eyebrow at him, "You could've just left it alone, you know, then I would've had the pleasure to not need to interact with someone as annoying as you." Adelaide did not intend for the last sentence to slip out, but it was too late to take it back now. The damage had already been done. Hopefully this wouldn't rile the boy up too much, but then again it would really irk Adelaide if someone called her annoying.

When the girl began lecturing him on people being interested in things because it made them happy and they had a passion and drive for it, he couldn't help glancing at his own books - the history books he himself loved to read and compare. "What I don't get is why he would have a passion and a drive for studying dragons. Why something like that would make him happy," Jack expressed, moving his history books away from the girl so she wouldn't be able to see them. "I just can't think of a reason."
At one point the girl began to smile slightly. She then sighed and explained that he was allowed to have his own opinion, but asked if it was necessary to come over to her when she was minding her own business. Jack started to feel a little bad and looked away, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. She was right; he could have just left her alone. It was almost a full minute before he got himself to reply.
"I'm...lonely," he admitted without thinking, suddenly embarrassed at what he had let slip past his lips. "I...I was having a bad day and feeling alone and I wanted someone to talk to. Maybe take my frustrations out on." Jack couldn't bring himself to look at the girl. "I find that making enemies is easier than making friends for me. And I like to argue. So I found something to pick a fight over." He shrugged. "Sorry. Being annoying is kind of what I live for."
If she really meant what she had said about it being interesting to see how other creatures lived and acted, maybe she could understand something about where he was coming from; why he had done what he had.

It took almost a full minute for the boy to reply to her. He had gone silent, and Adelaide hoped he was regretting saying what he had said. The blonde believed she was completely right and justified being angry and annoyed at him, but he had absolutely zero reason to rile her up in the first place. She absent-mindedly scanned her surroundings as she waited for the boy to respond.
Truth be told, she was not expecting what came out of his mouth. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise, "You're lonely?" She blurted out in disbelief before she could stop herself. Her eyebrows stayed raised as she listened to his explanation. As much as Adelaide didn't want to admit it, because this boy was slowly becoming the bane of her existence right now, she could relate to him. Slightly. Kind of. "Honestly? Same," she admitted truthfully, "apparently everyone always has to find something wrong with what I say and I'm a really argumentative person, so next thing you know it's a full blown argument and we hate each other for the rest of eternity," she didn't exactly know why she was admitting this to him. Usually, she was the type of person to not forgive easily, especially if someone annoyed her. Though, she supposed she could make an exception for him, considering she saw herself in him just a bit.
"Word of advice," her lips tilted up in a slightly mischievous smile, but she meant it with good intentions, "if you want someone to talk to, the best way to go about it is to not annoy them to the point were they wanna bang their head against a table. Now, believe me when I tell you I don't say this to a lot of people, but, potentially, we can start over. Maybe this time we won't be at each other's throats. I'm Adelaide Barlowe," she held her hand out for a handshake, hoping the boy would take it, "and you are?" If the boy accepted her offer to turn over a new leaf, this potentially could be a tiny, almost miniscule step in the right direction for both of them. Especially Adelaide, who really didn't forgive easily.
