Thankfully the library decided to live up to it’s name today. It was a beautiful afternoon outside, the last rays of the sun beaming through the windows as Jacqueline slid through the wide doors. She wore a deep green hoodie, black shorts, and sneakers, carrying some parchment and one of her school books. She really came here to write her letters but if the place turned out to be peaceful enough she would get some studying done as well. Sometimes the dungeons of the serpents wasn’t as charming as it would seem…if anyone ever thought that.

She nodded at the librarian when they noticed each other and made her way towards the fireplace, which was never seemed to be enjoyed by others. Jacqueline herself loved the sounds of crackling fire in a place that was supposed to be near devoid of sounds; silence could be unbearably loud sometimes. Magical fires tended to be very considerate, too, managing to keep a comfortable level of warmth to satisfy whoever was near it, and the Slytherin didn’t want any distractions as she got into her element.

Jacqueline set her items down on a small table next to the armchair she chose and sat down. She thought a moment before starting to write her letter.

Reducio
Dear Aunt Ysabel,

You know that I don’t write letters often because they’re tedious but now that I’m far away from family for so long I do want to make sure you guys know that I’m okay, and what’s been happening. I will probably write a separate letter about the events that’s been going on because it’s quite a lot, and I also don’t really have an opinion on those kind of things, I just keep to myself, my friends, and my food, really.

I wrote this letter to tell you about the strangest dream I had. I remember you speaking about your affinity for divination when you were in school and how you used to have strange dreams, too. The one I had recently reminds me of the one you had about the golden ostrich eggs in the mouth of a giant lion, but the lion was carrying them as if they were sacred, not as if they were meant to he eaten. And then you said that it seemed to predict the Gryffindors at your time winning an important match, but one of them ended up getting into a fight with some rivals because of how pompous they had been.

Well, my dream is not as grandiose, but I have a weird feeling about it and I’m not exactly sure what it means yet. It’s of a group of whales flying through the sky, but it’s almost as if they’re guarding something in the middle. They seem to maneuver around the clouds like it’s a sort of maze but I can see through them in a way, sort of like I’m omnipresent. I could just make out what they seem to either be protecting or chasing after; it’s like a glowing bird. It seems to be moving like the whales, it doesn’t flap it’s wings it’s like it’s just eternally diving.

I just heard something about Patronus in school, it’s like a guardian angel that protects people from dark beings like dementors, who suck souls out of people. I feel like it was a patronus but I don’t know what kind of bird it is. I feel like maybe this has to do with some event that might happen at this crazy school. Sometimes it’s insane what goes on in a school full of children! Muggles would get faint of heart!

Anyway, I’ve seen people from different schools, they have a Blossom Ball going on, and NOOO, I DO NOT HAVE A DATE, or really plan on having one either! I would rather go with a friend, people can be weird! Some kids my age are already looking for boyfriends and girlfriends, it makes me queasy sometimes, yuck!

Anyway part two, I hope you reply back soon because I miss you very much, you are the best teacher ever, Aunt Ysabel! Would you ever come to Hogwarts? I hope you would before I graduate in six years.

Expeditiously,
J. N. Tilghman

It had been a warm day at Hogwarts and Asher knew that he had better start familiarizing himself with the castle and all of the halls and secrets. He decided to turn his attention to the place he felt most at home: the library. A place filled with the smell of leather and ancient parchment filled with secrets. He woke up, admiring his room now bathed in sunlight before reaching into his closet and grabbing a white t-shirt, black hoodie, a pair of skinny black jeans, and a pair of high-top vans as it was still rather chilly out. He grabbed his bag with some of his books in it for school and a few extra notebooks and parchment. He worked his way from staircase to staircase and eventually found his way to the library though he will admit he got turned around quite a few times.

After finally wandering around and reaching the library he walked in. He got quite the look from the librarian but he returned it with a smile and worked his way over to the fireplace, a place that reminded him of home. He sat down on a coach, as another person was already occupying one and they seemed rather nestled in and he didn't want to ask them to move and started pulling out his books. More than anything he was simply reading them, turning the pages, and making notes on what piqued his interest. Eventually, he pulled his hair back with a tie and then returned to reading, his facial features and structure now more prominent, his eyes were even more green today as the sun hit them.

Jacqueline reread her letter multiple times, trying to get a feel of it. Months of being in school did that to her. She would make sure that her homework and essays where top notch because getting less than Os and As did not sit right with her. Back when she was homeschooled mistakes were taken as little stumbles towards better understanding but very much felt the pressure now that she was in a public school surrounded by hundreds of other students. Her mother, knowing her well, often reminded her in her letters to not be too hard on herself when it came to her studies. Jacqueline tried to take that advice by doing fun things, like socializing with others, participating in or spectating events, or just trying new things.

She glanced up at the sound of someone entering the library. She only meant to look at them briefly but then she noticed that the person was coming her way, which made her purse her lips. Jacqueline didn’t really want to be disturbed, but she figured maybe they just wanted to enjoy the fire as well.

It was a boy around her age with long dark hair that mostly covered her facial features. He carried books like her so he probably meant to study like she probably would do eventually. Jacqueline had the strange notion to ask if he wanted to study with her but she quickly brushed that thought away. She didn’t feel like making friends today.

He sat down on a coach near her and settled down his things, pulling some books out to read. The boy pulled back his hair, which made his features more noticeable. He had was kind of good-looking, and he had really nice green eyes. Jacqueline bit her lip, starting to feel weird. She decided to make a comment about his arrival.

“I’m guessing it’s normal to not say anything when you sit down near someone...” She had a slightly annoyed look on her face.

Asher was so in-depth with his books and reading that when he heard a voice he jumped and nearly fell off of the couch. He looked up to see someone sitting on the couch, the same person he noticed from earlier that he decided not to say anything to. He looked at her, studied her slightly, he couldn't help it. He noticed her stunning tan skin, slightly glowing in the warm afternoon sun, her eyes which pierced him, dark and holding thoughts and mysteries, her lips now pursed with annoyance, and her hair which cascaded down her shoulders, curly and dark brown, the sun shining down on it making it appear gold in the afternoon light.

He figured she was also a first-year, but of course, he was not one to assume. He couldn't help but smirk at her comment, one corner of his mouth lifting slightly before responding with:

"I suppose not...but you were so enveloped in your letter there, and with writing it, I did not want to disturb you...I figured that was more respectful rather than annoying you."

He looked back to his book and then to hers, bit his tongue then finally spit out

"First-year? I'm only guessing based on your books..."

He looked back down, annoyed with himself that he asked the question, asking something like that made it even more obvious he was a first-year, and he was trying his hardest to hide that for as long as he could, but of course, his curiosity failed him yet again...what a surprise.

She smirked when he jolted, startled when she spoke. She wondered what kind of person he was, if he was easily teased by other students. He didn’t seem like an easy target though, based on his demeanor. He seemed more easygoing and not a jerk like many kids her age.

Jacqueline squinted at him. “Well, thanks so much for the consideration…I guess.” She looked him up and down in a curious manner. He seemed to be doing the same but in much…deeper manner, as if he was looking at something he admired. That was the best way for her to describe it. Jacqueline had to act like she didn’t notice though because she started to feel weird again. She didn’t know why her cheeks felt warm, and she didn’t like it.

He asked if she were a first-year, which made her look at his own books. Was he one, too? She never felt self-conscious about her age or school year, it seemed really unnecessary because she could prove her capabilities regardless of those labels. Despite what her peers, even the one’s older, tended to say Jacqueline was much more than some numbers. Most people didn’t know her that well since she usually steered conversations outside of herself, but those who do know that she’s a very clever and creative, and she has much strength in her will, more than these fickle Lions like to claim.

“Apparently. I’m guessing you are, too?” She looked at his hair again. “Your-“ She stopped herself. She almost uttered out a compliment but decided to refrain. She was already getting weird vibes from this guys—not necessarily bad ones, but still—so she didn’t want to give him any ideas. Ahem, what are you here to study for in particular?

He looked at her and saw her smirk and immediately felt like he was with his brothers again. He was so used to being teased that it didn't even phase him, in fact, he did something he never had. He stood up and walked over to the couch she was sitting on and sat down on the opposite side. He wanted to show her he was confident but he also did not want to scare her, especially based on some of her reactions which, he noticed right away.

He smiled at her response and said "What can I say? I aim to please...also your cheeks are getting...uhm. Pink." He couldn't help but smile and felt his own cheeks warming up. However, once he felt his cheeks warm up he turned his smile into a confused look, a curious one, and made his cheeks cool down as well. He was not used to this feeling of...warmth. It was odd, strange.

When asked what year he was he let out a soft laugh. "Was my obvious first-year question not a dead giveaway?" He smirked again before saying: "But to be completely straightforward with you, yes. I am a first-year, and a very curious one indeed. I'm not studying anything in particular, I'm just reading ahead because I truly have nothing better to do, and I wanted to discover the castle and see what the halls hold..." He trailed off, realizing he was rambling, a habit he was trying to stop but for some odd reason he could not.

He looked up and saw her staring at his hair and heard her cut herself off. He smiled again and said "What were you going to say about my hair? I apologize if it seems a bit more unkempt I was lazy today and didn't feel like fixing it up like I usually do. Yours is beautiful though. Very...curly and golden."

The queasy feeling that had been steadily building up inside her—which she really wanted to go away—did exactly that when he got up and came to sit on the couch next to her. Jacqueline quickly went from feeling uncertain inside about him to flat out bothered by his audacity. He didn’t seem to really care for manners. Jacqueline knew that most people, especially boys, didn’t these days but she very much valued her personal space, especially in places like the library that were very quiet, and where most were bound to find themselves alone for the most part.

She turned away, when he said something about her cheeks being pink, feeling their warmth behind the privacy of her big, curly hair. Jacqueline wondered why she had been feeling weird before, and she was very much glad that it had gone away, at least for now. One glance his way and she noticed that he was fairing from the same thing, his own cheeks a shade of rose.

He confirmed that he was a first year as well, saying that he had came her to read ahead because he didn’t feel like he had much better to do. Jacqueline wondered where he stood on an academic level, if he was one of the top students or if he did just enough to have decent grades. She herself cared enough to want to be considered an excellent student, desiring all Os and Es, but rarely considered looking down at anyone else because of their opinions. Her Aunt Ysabel taught her better than that.

He mentioned something about exploring the castle and having adventurous, which made the thought cross her own mind. Jacqueline actually wanted to do the same thing but never knew what in particular to do most of the time. She wanted to do something different than most others, and she felt like those kind of unique tales were left to chance.

Her mind went straight back to annoyance when he caught onto what she had been going to say. “I didn’t really care, actually,” she scoffed. ”But thanks.” She touched at her own hair. It was more dark brown than anything, but she guessed there was some lighter hints because of her time spent in the sun. It was just very sparse in her opinion.

Jacqueline eyed him suspiciously. Boys could act really weird sometimes. What does he even mean by ‘aim to please’? she thought.

He still had his things on the other couch so she couldn’t really go over there. She felt a growing sense of discomfort. She didn’t want to leave this nice area near the fireplace but didn’t want to be bothered. Jacqueline stood up. “Um, since you obviously want this space to yourself, bye, whoever you are.” She stood up and began to gather her things.

Asher looked at Jacqueline's face and couldn't help but notice how the fire reflected in her eyes, making them sparkle. He smiled and said "If you wish to join me and explore together, I am more than willing to invite you...after all, the idea of exploring seems to pique your interest."

He watched her as she turned away from him and hid her blushing face. He wanted to tell her that the light pink flush looked cute on her but he knew that would make her uncomfortable, and he had only just met her. When she gave her sassy remark in regards to him complimenting her hair he merely smiled. He couldn't tell if she wasn't used to receiving compliments, and while normally such a snide remark would upset him, he didn't say anything this time, especially since they had just met each other.

As he watched her eye him he looked back at her, not breaking his gaze, allowing his inquisitive eyes to pierce her dark ones filled with judgment. While he used to be afraid of eye contact when he was younger, he no longer shies away from it, as by maintaining eye contact he found that it showed confidence, and it showed that he was listening. He looked her up and down, judging her stance, and noticing that she was stiff and she seemed to have a wall up that she was afraid to let down.

During this time when Asher was trying to figure out what was making her so scared, he was shocked out of his gaze when she stated she was going to leave. He immediately stood up and said "You don't have to leave...I'll move. My apologies for entering your personal space, I should have been more considerate."

He walked over to his items and supplies and started packing up, putting everything from his books to his notebooks and parchement back in his bag. Finally before leaving he untied his hair and stood back up to look at Jaqueline and said "Do you want to join me for a walk, or do you just want me to leave. I promise I won't be mad with your answer, I just want to make you feel comfortable."

Jacqueline pursed her lips, holding her things close to her. Who was he to judge her so much? Why did he think she was interested in whatever he was interested in? She didn’t know why he couldn’t tell that she didn’t want to be bothered, or maybe it was that he didn’t care. Jacqueline could laugh at that. Even though she kept to herself, she didn’t mind being an annoyance to others at times. There was something about getting under peoples skin that got to her, some sort of power knowing that she could literally influence someone to get upset. Maybe he was purposely trying to annoy her with his strange antics. He sure did have a funny way of going about it though. For some reason there was a part of her that was sort of…pleased by somethings he said, or did.

The boy watched her as if he were really trying to notice her, to study her, understand her maybe, even. Jacqueline wasn’t used to that. Most of time she was the one doing the studying of individuals, trying to get a good judge of character to see how she could benefit from their interaction, whether it were for entertainment or exchanges of knowledge, or just plain interest. He seemed to be into the latter, and he was surely piqued by something.

He obviously thought she was a hundred percent serious about the personal space part, which she wasn’t, but she didn’t feel like clarifying. He seemed like a genuinely nice fellow. He didn’t immediately brush her off for her underlying rudeness. Jacqueline was known for scaring away people who were too kind and gullible. She could be friendly but she jokes around so much and sometimes it’s not for the weak-willed.

Jacqueline brushed her hair out her face, trying not to look at his eyes, which were seriously too nice to be just sitting on a human’s face. Let alone his, she thought, but she didn’t really mean it, strangely. She let her eyes flick up once to met his, noticing how they really were like beautiful jewels, like a perfect, deep mixture of peridot and emerald, and the light from the sun and fire definitely did them justice. It was like looking into twin mystical jade pools that were full of gentle secrets.

She hadn’t responded to any of his comments, feeling unsure about her words. Part of Jacqueline wanted to run away, in a sense, while another wanted to…enjoy his presence, for lack of better words. Usually she felt tentative around people, especially when they tried to get close to her by asking her dumb questions about herself. It always made her feel uncomfortable, making her wonder what was their motive behind trying to know about her? Her Aunt Ysabel warned her about that kind of behavior, though, saying that she had to be more open to friendships, but she had gotten it from her mother, a sharp woman with even sharper words. Jacqueline was much more kind and accepting than her.

She felt a little frustration rise but something told her to say something that didn’t come from that, to have lighter spirits. He really said he didn’t want to make me feel uncomfortable, wow. With a quiet sigh, Jacqueline said, ”U-uhm, sure, why not.”

Did I just freakin’ stutter? She facepalmed herself in her head. He probably thinks I’m a pushover now. Still, Jacqueline couldn’t help by feel relaxed, like she didn’t have to really keep her guard up all the way, but surely did secure it. This could all be an act.

“My name is Jack….qualine. Jacqueline. Jay is fine, too…” He looked like a Sean, Nathaniel, Joseph, or maybe even Raphael, in her opinion. She also wondered if he were a Gryffindor.

Asher stared at her, watching her as she gathered her things and then held them close to her. He realized he may have overstepped an unseen boundary by insinuating her interest and decided to take a step back. Asher was known to make friends easily, but that was back home, here it was a whole different world with different people and ideas, and who was he to say who and who wasn't interested in the things he was. He put his bag over his shoulder and just stood there, allowing his body to bask in the afternoon sun which was shining through the window.

He looked at her and saw that she seemed to be studying him like he had been doing before, but he wasn't too sure now. But part of him felt like she was, the way she was staring at his eyes so intently, it felt like she was staring into his soul and he was completely exposed, and he had never felt like that before...and he wasn't even sure if he hated it...

When she responded that she was willing to explore with him, a smile crept across his face, a closed smile but a smile nonetheless, something he wasn't expecting to do so easily. He reached into his bag and grabbed two hair ties. One he used to put his own hair up again, the other he held out to her. "I don't know if you want to put your hair up or not but it may be easier if we're exploring..."

When she told him her name he rolled the name over in his mouth. Jacqueline...it was a beautiful name, and to Asher, it suited her perfectly. It was a name that was sweet but held power. And Jay was a cute nickname, it also suited her perfectly...at least to him it did.

"I'm Asher...But you can call be A, Ash, or Zeph...I have a lot of nicknames." He smiled and turned his body slightly to show his bag, embellished with the symbol for Slytherin, a patch his mom had made for him before he left. He found it bold of her to assume he would be in Slytherin, but with practically the whole family being the house, he wasn't surprised. But part of him still was since he felt like he didn't match what was expected of most. Cunning...willing to do whatever it takes to reach the top...and sneaky. But he supposed that considering he was only a first-year, he shouldn't doubt what the sorting hat chose.

He realized he was lost in his own mind again and snapped himself back to reality. "I'm a Slytherin...what about you?" He asked softly. He has to admit that when he first met her she struck him as either a Slytherin or a Gryffindor. She seemed strong, but she also had this energy about her that he couldn't put his finger on...
