Dear Miss Barfield Della,

I am not sure if you are aware, but there is an upcoming ball at the end of this month. It is a matter of prestige, and despite my misgivings about spending more time engaging with the student populace, I believe that attendance is better than not. And as such, I find myself in need of a partner, a 'date', if you will.

I have been looking around for suitable candidates, ones that I would find bearable and whom I could possibly show a good time, particularly given the standoffish or excitable nature of the vast majority of the females in our year. It behooves me to say that there are very few available candidates. Of them, I believe that you would likely be the best possible choice.

I have been keeping an eye on you, see. Ever since you jumped into the lake back in September. You are noble and brave and courageous and true, all traits that are a credit to your name and your House. Your performance in duelling has also left me impressed.

I apologise. My pen wanders sometimes.

What I am trying to say, I suppose, is that I would be delighted if you would do me the honour of accompanying me to this ball. I cannot promise you the most exciting night of your life, as I am sure many boys would. But I shall do my utmost to make sure that the time that you spend with me is pleasant and enjoyable.

I hope you shall accept my invitation.

Sincerely,

Dear Ming,

I would be honored to be your date to the ball.

And do not worry about it not being the "most exciting night" of my life. I have never been to a magical ball at a magical school, so I'm sure it will be fantastic! It will be nice to have someone levelheaded, kind, and courteous by my side. I'm sure most boys our age would make the night annoying, but after watching you manage the duel, you seem to be more mature. I think you are also the best possible choice.

I should let you know—the Frog Choir will be singing in the main tent, and I have the task of managing the frogs. We can meet after the performance. I hope the idea of me handling frogs before dancing doesn't gross you out too much! (The frogs are quite clean and sweet once you get to know them.) I will understand if it's that more than you bargained for from me.

Sincerely,

Dear Della,

It is heartening to hear that you find me to be an acceptable companion, and I shall strive to meet your expectations.

Next, we should co-ordinate our clothing to work together - it would be highly embarrassing if they clashed horribly. In line with Fall and Halloween being celebrations of death and rebirth, I was hoping to wear dark and sharply contrasting colors. My own preferences for attire would be black and white, which work several levels and would work with most color schemes that you could pick. However, if you had a clothing theme or color scheme in mind, do feel free to share. I will do my utmost to accommodate your wishes.

Looking forward to the Ball,

Postscript: I am not the biggest fan of reptiles, but I do not find them abhorrent. Frog choir does seem like an interesting concept, and I am certain it would be entertaining to watch.[/font]
