In need for some advice

Every time Nate was at Hogwarts something bad happened, every time he didn't want to go back and every time he found himself here again. He associated many terrible moments with this place, but also good ones. This place was a kind of love-hate relationship and even though it was an overcoming every time, it was also a good decision. He couldn't describe it, but it helped that he always had his best friend by his side. This time Hogwarts was once again the meeting place for all the magical schools in the world and this time there would be something very special - The Hexwizard Tournament.
Of course, Nate thought about throwing his name into the goblet, as his brother did, as his father probably expected him to do, and as Irina probably would. But for once that wasn't going to be the topic for today, today he needed to open his heart, to talk about a subject he had carried with him for so long and could no longer bear to keep to himself. He needed advice and there would probably be no one better than Irina.
During the last visit here, there was a summer camp and Nate got to enjoy his first kiss with another boy one night. Nate never thought about what gender he was into until then, usually it was girls that caught his interest but that night was different. The kiss was nothing special but Nate didn't feel weird about it, on the contrary, in a way he liked it. Since that evening Nate had been thinking about it again and again and on top of that he was in a kind of relationship with Cash, which didn't make it any easier. He liked them. Their parents even knew each other and his parents were more than thrilled when they found out they had met. He missed them and was glad to see them again, but at the same time he felt he had to let these undiscovered feelings out and find out what they were all about. The bottom line was that the tall Russian boy didn't know what to do and while he wasn't the type to show feelings, especially because he had changed a lot during the last year, he had never talked about it.
In the past, Nate had been rather introverted, especially towards strangers. With friends he was always the funny, loyal and protective boy but outwardly he was hard to read. But since leaving home, going to Russia to go to school like his brother, since experiencing all the bad things, the explosion, something had changed in him. He was still the guy he was before, but he was no longer an introvert. He had no problem entering into conflicts, flexing his muscles and confessing his man. It was all the rarer when Nate actually talked about his feelings and that only happened with select people. One of those was Irina.
So now Nate was sitting with his best friend under a tree in the courtyard, around them many other students laughing and talking but all busy with themselves so he had no worries that anyone could overhear. Leaning back against the tree, he played with a blade of grass between his fingers. His jaw was tense and looked even more defined than it already did. Quietly he ground his teeth back and forth, not sure how to start the conversation. Finally, he decided to just talkt and turned his head to Irina. "Irina. Can I talk to you about something in confidence?" he asked cautiously.

For the first time since the bombing, Irina was back at Hogwarts. Her frustration at the school had yet to dissipate but she had come back to give it another chance, or at least try to enter the Hexwizard tournament. Honestly, the Hexwizard tournament was the only reason that she came back to Hogwarts, she wanted to Koldovstoretz’s champion and the only way to do that would be to throw her name into that cup. Which therefore meant that she had to come back to the terribly unsafe school.
The journey to get to Hogwarts wasn’t the worst this time, they had traveled through a few cabinets and the floo network. It was substandard but they all survived and were safe in the end. Or at least they had made the journey safely, who knew if they would could out of this trip still in one piece. Maybe they would go on another “fun” trip and wind up getting killed in the process. Irina had no idea what was going to happen but she did know that the odds of something going wrong were extremely high.
Luckily, Nate and her were still extremely close friends, and had helped each other out through the aftermath of the bombing. Nate was like Irina’s rock, the two of them had been through so much yet she still found a way to continue on due to him. He was always there for her and in return, Irina was there to help him through anything that he needed help for. The two of them were best friends and Irina couldn’t have been happier to have a friend like him.
Currently the two of them were sitting in the Hogwarts courtyard under a tree and Irina was watching the people pass by. It was quite a calming moment, of course Irina was on edge and worried about what could happen at any second but it was still a nice moment. The weather was perfect and even though so many people walked by, it still felt like the two of them were alone. Hearing her name from beside her, Irina turned to face Nate. He wanted to talk to her about something in confidence and he was specking in Russian. That meant it was serious and Irina kindly responded, “Of course Nate, you can tell me anything.”

As soon as Nate said the words, he felt stupid. Can I talk to you about something in confidence - who says that? No one, except Nate. He felt silly and at the same time knew he had to feel anything but silly around Irina. Nate had an inner conflict and it was pulling his hair out. Normally he was the tall, broad Russian boy who wasn't expected to think about feelings in any way. Still he lay awake many nights, now sitting here needing advice from his best friend. He wanted to have finally said it and at the same time also make a retreat. He wanted to say that it didn't matter and it wasn't anything important, to cover it up with a joke and at the same time Irina exuded this pleasant atmosphere that calmed him down. That gave him time to breathe, to collect his thoughts and at the same time took away his fear. The feeling told him that he could be honest with her.
He took a deep breath, his gaze following the many students walking through the courtyard. It took a few seconds but eventually he managed to jump the hurdle and speak. "Well, it's something I've never talked to anyone about before. It's very personal and I don't know what to make of it myself yet." He began to explain, his gaze still straight ahead. He knew if he looked at her he would falter. "And I know I can talk to you about anything. But this isn't just a fight with parents or my brother. This is something even I'm stumped on." He paused for a moment. It was unusual for him to be so open and so vulnerable at the same time. It was a side rarely seen, it happende at the ball, owed to a potion or after the explosion that had taken everyone very badly. But he was still Nate Smirnow.
"Do you remember the last Summer Camp here?" The question was unnecessary, this was not a time either of them would ever forget, but he had to pick her up. He had to tell her the back story. "Anyway, one night I participated in spin the bottle. Most of the time it was really unspectacular and as you know it was often about kissing. Well, I kissed someone that night too." Nate had considered for a moment already mentioning that it was a boy, but he had decided against it. "Um, well, Nate Smirnow doesn't back down from a challenge, right?" he now asked, uncertain and joking at the same time.
"Of course I accepted the challenge and it ended with a kiss. Even though I wasn't sure at first. It was an unusual idea, but I did it. And it wasn't bad. On the contrary, I didn't even feel any kind of reluctance and I even think I liked it." He looked to Irina now and surely she was overwhelmed by all the words. This was not Nate his first kiss, he had kissed a few girls before and Irina knew that too. But it was his first kiss with a boy. "It was a boy I had kissed." He finally said and uncertainty was written on his face.

If anything were to ever happen to Nate, Irina would be there with blazing pitchforks and knives aimed at the person who hurt him, metaphorically of course. Irina cared so much about Nate and felt like in a way she had to protect him. Then again she felt like she had to protect every Koldovstoretz kid, but with Nate, the feeling was more prominent. When Nate asked if he could talk about something in confidence, Irina immediately assumed the worst. Different scenarios ran through her brain as she hoped that he dealing with something terrible.
Staying calm was the main goal though, if Irina could act calm then she wouldn't freak out Nate and make the scenario worse than it was to begin with. Irina hadn’t turned her gaze and was staring straight at Nate as he looked forward and began speaking. All Irina needed to do was listen and be a good friend, so she just let him talk. As Nate spoke his first few sentences, Irina smiled and nodded for him to continue while also letting out a tiny sigh of relief. It wasn’t a terrible event but rather something he was stumped on, she wouldn’t have to intimidate anyone today.
Summer camp. Oh she hated the memories that she now correlated with those two words. Pushing her own angry thoughts out of the way, Irina focused on what this conversation was all for, it was for Nate, not her in the slightest. Surprising herself with her own soft voice, Irina let out a short, “Of course”. Sending him a small smile of encouragement to keep going, Irina listened as he mentioned the spin the bottle game. That game was interesting to say the least, Irina had kissed two flirty international boys before the whole thing dissolved into chaos. One of the boys she kissed twice and it wasn’t bad it just didn’t mean anything to her either. Hearing that Nate kissed something that night made her face turn a little bit quizzical. Who had he kissed and was he having second thoughts about them?
Letting out an airy laugh at Nate talking about himself in third person, Irina added jokingly, “No you definitely don’t”. She was trying to understand where he was going with this, what made it so important for him to tell her in this way. Irina’s eyes had been faced towards Nate for the whole conversation, but only now he turned to look at her. Then he let out what Irina assumed was the whole reason he had this talk. Nate had kissed a boy and didn’t feel reluctance towards it.
Without a second though, Irina reached out and wrapped her arms around Nate’s torso, pulling him into a big hug. “Thank you for telling me Nate, I know how hard it might have been to share, I really appreciate it.” Genuinely Irina was so proud of Nate for letting her know, and the thought was prominent on her smiling face. Irina pulled away from the hug but still sat fairly close to him. “I want you to know that it doesn’t matter to me who you kiss or like at all. All that matters to me is that your happy and safe, and I’m so proud of your for letting me know.” Irina hoped that Nate could feel how she did right now, the happiness and proudness was radiating off of her and her smile was so large.

This conversation was not an easy start, he had a hard time finding the words and with every sentence he said he thought about whether he should now take the back door and just tell something that wasn't true. That wouldn't reveal his little secret and metaphorically drop his pants. But he remained steadfast, he followed through and he knew he could trust Irina with anything. Nevertheless, the situation was uncomfortable for him, it was more comfortable with Irina than with anyone else, but it was still uncomfortable.
When he finally voiced the game-changing point, he hoped to feel relief, but that was not the case. He hated it. He hated that he had said it out loud. He regretted it and wished he could undo it. Why exactly did he do that again? Oh right, because keeping the secret to himself was just such a pain in the arse. He couldn't look at Irina, he was afraid to read her face, would she think differently of him now? Would she find it repulsive? Would she laugh at him?
The answer to this question was not long in coming and to his surprise Irina had simply found the right words again. Actually, it shouldn't surprise him, but it did. His shoulders slumped as all the tension left his body and he exhaled deeply once. He lifted his gaze, looked at Irina and smiled softly. He formed a "Thank you" with his lips and now felt the sense of relief.
Nate didn't know what to say, he was just happy to have her as his best friend. He pulled her to him with ease, very carefully without hurting her and took her in a tight hug. "I love you, Irina." He really did, on a friendly basis of course but he would do anything for her. He would protect her from everything, trust her with everything (sooner or later) and always make sure she was happy.
Nate was not known for showing his feelings so openly, since changing from the quiet shy Nate to the big broad Russian who showed the first grader the ropes, few would think he even possessed such heartfelt feelings. But he did; big Bloke had a giant heart.
"Thank you for always listening to me and finding the right words. I really appreciate it."
