Luka glances at his watch, nibbling on his bottom lip nervously. He had slipped a note to Mouse asking whether they’d like to spend the weekend with him only yesterday evening, and isn’t sure if they got it. He sent it at the last minute as he abruptly realized his schedule had finally cleared up, without giving them any time to respond. Now he can only hope the owl made it to them successfully.

His note said ‘10:00am, Saturday in the courtyard,’ and it’s only 9:45, but he had nothing else to do. Now he regrets heading out so early; he didn’t even bring a book to occupy himself. All he has is his wand and a couple galleons in his pocket. Bored out of his mind, Luka eyes the courtyard, and spots a particularly large tree with wide, sprawling branches. Bingo.

Disregarding the strange looks he receives, Luka hauls himself onto the tree, moving slowly but with full confidence. Climbing trees is much easier than rock climbing, with far more ways to grip the sturdy wood than notches on an uneven cliff face. Still, he tests every branch before applying his full weight, mentally scouting out the path. By the time he’s on the highest branch that’ll still support his weight, he has an internal map of the specific tree, for if he ever decides to scale it again.

But now that he’s actually on the tree, he’s bored again. Sitting fifteen feet in the air is only marginally more interesting than sitting on the ground. Still, he isn’t about to clamber down only to, what, climb back up again? He’s not that bored.

Picking a shiny sickle out of his pocket, he flips the coin, watching it sail through the air before catching it in his palm. Perhaps Mouse won’t even turn up at all, and instead he’ll just get an owl back saying that they’re busy this weekend. He really should have planned this better. He sighs, and flips the coin again.

Mouse originally hadn't any plans for the weekend - they were usually spending the weekend with Luka or playing some sort of game with some Gryffindors. The day they received the letter to join Luka they had already expected to spend the weekend with him. Still, they loved how Luka would send out an invite like it was a secret club for just those two.

When Mouse's mothers introduced Luka - a scared child being thrust into the magic world - they never expected to get a lifelong best friend. Mouse was used to boys being around but with their three brothers being older they never really had friends of her own. Their brothers' friends were nice (usually) but it wasn't anything like it was when they befriended Luka.

At 9:30 in the morning Mouse pulled themselves out of bed, not exactly sure why Luka wanted to get the weekend started so early but it wasn't all that bad. They pulled themselves up, grabbed their favorite euphoric hoodie, and headed out towards the courtyard.

"Luka!" Mouse called out at 9:48. Luka was probably the only one Mouse chose to be loud with (that wasn't family of course). Luka had a way of making Mouse feel comfortable in who they are. From being small and short to being nonbinary.

Mouse looked around the courtyard, their elbows scrunched together before they decided to look up in the trees. "Luka!" They called out again, finally catching eye of him. "Why don't we call you Monkey?" Mouse was only teasing of course.

Ciaran "Mouse" Mouser (they/them).
