English ⋆ ParseltongueIt was a Friday. Mars sat in the middle of the Charms classroom, picking at the edge of their textbook with an idle nail. They yawned, molars glinting in the candlelight. They loved the class, sure, but they'd stayed awake for far too long last night to be listening to a "Proper Wand Movements and Incantations" lecture. They knew how to hold the damn thing, it wasn't that hard.
Sighing, Mars flipped a page in the textbook. Fumos, the Smokescreen Spell. They grinned. They had fond memories of this one, for sure. It had such a nice quality to it, making the room dark and mystifying. It was like... a wet blanket. They scrunched their nose at the thought of that. Okay, so maybe not so much.
Tapping gently along the inky letters, their eyes flicked unseeing along the page. They longed to do practice—that was the best part of the class after all, where the wood would feel rough and firm under their hands, the magic like a well-spring bubbling deep from inside them. It was electrifying, the way it crawled up their hand red-hot and boiling. Part of the adrenaline rush that made it so satisfying, they supposed.
It seemed though, that the lecture might continue for a few minutes more. They twisted, cracking their knuckles quietly under the desk. Their wand poked awkwardly into their stomach, perched at an odd angle in their lap.
"I know, I know," they whispered under their breath, "I want to too." If they got a few odd stares, they didn't notice. Maybe it was odd to speak to a wand, but Mars swore to the heavens above that the thing had a brain. If felt kind of rude, treating it like it was just a stick when it was clearly so much more.
They sighed, righting the wand on the table. Enough of that. Time to focus. Maybe it would finally be practice time again?

It was the second day of classes for First Years and the first time he'd be attending Charms class. Needless to say, Kim was quite interested in finding out what it would be like. He'd already attended Herbology, DADA, Transfiguration and Astronomy classes the previous day. All of them had been informative and he'd learned a lot from the teachers involved, despite it only being the first day. Flying class had also taken place.
Not that he'd attended the first class.
But he did have a doctor's note, so it wasn't so much that he'd skipped the class.
However, Kim knew he couldn't keep doing this all the time. They'd get suspicious and the last thing he wanted was to draw attention to himself regarding this matter.
Tuesday was the day he'd have to face up to his fears and go there. But he wasn't looking forward to it at all and hoped at least they'd let the other students practice while he stayed behind them. Maybe he could even get a private lesson instead from the teacher. If only he could just skip the flying class and never touch a broomstick in his life, that would be awesome. They weren't really needed much for transportation.
That was what the Floo Network was used for.
He could simply use that instead of depending upon a broom.
Brooms were usually used for emergency transportation purposes and Quidditch related things, right? Since Kim had no interest in Quidditch, or rather taking part in the sport himself, he didn't need to learn how to fly, right? Couldn't he just fly really low on the ground? He would be fine as long as it wasn't more than a foot above the ground. Wasn't it flying class, not height class? Maybe he'd have a talk with the teacher later.
Kim entered the room and looked around for an empty seat in the classroom. Unfortunately, it seemed as if everyone had been of the same mindset and every table was taken. So, he looked for the nearest table to the door and went over to take a seat next to the boy currently sitting there. A bit nervous to just take a seat next to a stranger, but knowing he had no choice but to do so, Kim simply nodded to the boy.
He placed his satchel next to the table.
Leaning down to take out his textbook and a notebook, Kim placed them on their table.
As the class started and the teacher started the lecture, speaking about proper wand movements and incantations, Kim listened to everything they had to say. All of this was basic knowledge to wizarding families, but he supposed it made sense in case there were muggles or half-bloods there. As a result, he took the time to glance over at his classmate who was sitting beside him. The boy had some rather sharp features on him.
He could also see some winged eyeliner & dusty shadow. And lastly, his hair was cut in a pixie style. Nice looks. Kim idly wondered what color his eyes were, he couldn't quite see from his current position. But if the boy turned his head to look at him, it would be easy to find out. Kim was so engrossed in gazing at him that he briefly forgot he was in class. And then, Mars chose to twist and crack his knuckles under their shared table.
Kim smirked.
"Yo." He said, his typical greeting when it came to others.
"I take it you're bored?" He asked with a raised brow.
"Explaining how to hold your wand and speak the proper incantations is something all pureblood and wizard-born students should already know. Most half-bloods even know how to do this too. I'm assuming it's for the benefit of those who had no knowledge of this world until now. But still, it's kind of boring to listen to. I can't wait for the actual practical demonstrations to start." Kim said to the other boy and glanced over at the teacher.
He sensed her lecture was finally winding down to the practical applications and returned his attention to his classmate again. "I'm Kim. You are?" Kim asked, waiting for him to respond to him. It didn't seem as if the other boy was from his year because he seemed a bit older. But maybe he was wrong and he was. As the Slytherin whispered something under his breath, Kim raised a brow. Who was he talking to now?
Pets usually weren't allowed in the classroom.
So, either the boy was talking to himself, or he was talking to his wand.
Kim wasn't sure which one was worse. Unless, his wand was sentient like the Sorting Hat? But he'd never heard of such a thing happening before. And if he was talking to himself, well that was also kind of strange. Sure, you could do that in the comfort of your own room, or somewhere you thought no one would overhear you. But to do so in a classroom full of students? Even if no one heard what you said, they'd still hear you.
And also see you do it too.
"Are you a Second Year?" Kim guessed and looked over at him.
Hopefully he wasn't a First Year and took offense at his words. Because if he was, that would imply Kim thought he looked old enough to be a Second Year.
