--- The Slytherin who became a Gryffindor ---
Backdate: February 17th, 2022, directly after dinner.
For the first time since coming to Hogwarts, Kim was in a daze. He still couldn't believe how he'd reacted earlier to that Hufflepuff boy from before. It wasn't like him to freeze like that and not be able to do or say much of anything. But... that face... how close he'd gotten... those molten brown eyes that seemed to stare into the depths of his soul... Kim shuddered. Focus, there was a reason why he'd left the Great Hall and come up to the 3rd Floor of the castle. It wasn't so Kim could continue to think about that person, even though he couldn't stop now.
But that was beside the point!
The reason why he'd come up to the 3rd Floor was to enter the Hospital Wing and get checked out, just in case. Ever since the incident had happened, he'd been experiencing dizziness and pain at the back of his head. He'd also gotten a bloody nose from the door meeting his face, but Kim didn't think that one was too bad, as his nose wasn't bothering him. A head injury was serious though if it wasn't taken care of right away, which is why he'd come. He knocked on the door and then let himself inside, to be met by a student intern, who welcomed him in.
Kim told them what he was there for, what had happened and that he simply wanted a quick check-up by someone to make sure nothing was wrong.
It was better safe than sorry.
The intern led him over to an empty bed and told him to take a seat on the soft mattress and someone would be with him soon. He sat down and grimaced as his head throbbed again. Better lie down instead, he thought to himself and swung his legs up onto the mattress. Once more, his thoughts turned to the Hufflepuff boy again and Kim made a face. Why was he not leaving his mind? He shouldn't think about him anymore, it was highly likely that boy wasn't like him. If he could forget about him, it would probably be for the best. But he couldn't do it.
A huge sigh escaped his lips.
He stared up at the ceiling, wondering how long it would take for the Hufflepuff boy to leave his mind, not aware that someone on the bed next to his was staring at him.

Hex-#433687─•••─The hospital wing was honestly not a bad place to be stuck in. Sure, there was an underlying smell of waste and blood that not even the bleach and oils could mask, but at least it looked pretty. The large, high windows that were stationed all around the castle let in big, yawning sunbeams, the last of the day's light before nightfall. Creamy white seemed to be the color of choice for the wing, from the trimmings on the door, to the linen bedsheets.
Gemima sat on one of the beds. She was holding one of her feet aloft, like the intern had told her to. They had kindly cast a healing spell on her ankle, which had been badly sprained when she first hobbled into the room.
As for how she sprained her ankle, well...Let's just say her days of reading in trees had finally caught up to her. Gem scooted a bit higher up on the bed, and propped her ankle atop a pillow. The intern had told her the spell would take a little while to fully mend it, so she had to lie there while her foot throbbed and stung.
She felt around for the book she had been reading at the time of the incident. "Might as well carry on with this." she mumured to herself.
But just then, the doors to the hospital wing burst open, and in strode a boy. He had long, fluffy blonde hair, fine features, and a lean build. He looked about Gemima's age, too. She couldn't tell what exactly was wrong with him from here, but there was a noticeable smear of blood down the side of his neck.
Gem followed the boy with her eyes, as he was met by another intern at the door. She lowered her book to get a better view as the two of them exchanged a few short words. He had fierce eyes, and she could somehow sense a strong determination behind them. This guy was definitely interesting.
Gemima was so lost in thought that she failed to notice that the boy had taken up residence in the bed that was directly next to her. He swung his legs onto the mattress, and scrunched up his face at the ceiling. Whether it was from pain, or something else, Gemima didn't know. He didn't seem to notice her, so she studied him further. She knew that staring at somebody like this was rude, but what else was she going to do here? Her ankle pulsed painfully as if to remind her.
The boy sighed. A tuft of hair floated off his face. Gem sighed herself and picked her book back up. This is officially getting weird. Back to reading!

It didn't take him long to become bored with just lying down on the mattress. And soon enough, he sensed that someone was staring at him. But who? Kim turned his head to the right and let his eyes flicker over his surroundings. There was no one there. However, when he glanced to the left, he was just in time to catch the girl staring at him. And then, the Ravenclaw girl turned her head away, as if she hadn't wanted him to know what she'd been doing just then. Kim blinked, not sure what to make of it. Now it was his turn to stare at her.
He didn't realize a smear of dried blood could be seen down the side of his neck. Kim hadn't thought he'd actually bled at all from his head, as he hadn't felt anything at the time. Or maybe it had just taken awhile for the blood to come out of his head. Other than the throbbing pain at the back of his head and his bloodied nose, he hadn't suffered any other injuries. Kim's nose was relatively fine by now, it only felt sore. It was just his head that felt strange and the whole dizziness wasn't helping matters. That Hufflepuff boy had also suffered a head injury.
But he didn't see him in the hospital wing yet.
Not unless he'd already missed him. So maybe his wasn't as severe as Kim's.
From the look of the girl next to him, it seemed as if she was in Ravenclaw. Gemima's foot was propped up onto a pillow but otherwise he couldn't see anything off about her.
So she must be here because of her foot or ankle. Kim let his blue eyes flicker over her for a few seconds and then pushed himself up into a sitting position on the bed. He kind of wanted to talk to her because he was bored and the intern wasn't coming back. But at the same time, he disliked small talk as he found it useless. Kim resisted the urge to sigh again. And that was when he noticed the book. Oh, he'd read that one. Well, it was as good an opener as he could get. "Is that your first time reading the book, or do you tend to reread them too?"
He asked, a bit curious.
What sort of person was this Ravenclaw girl? Hopefully, she'd be able to keep his interest.
A bit of small talk he supposed was fine right now, mostly because he was deathly bored. Being at the hospital wing and having nothing to do was worse than anything else.

Hex-#433687─•••─Gemima's eyes ran over the words on the page like clockwork. If someone were to take a peek at her face behind the book, they'd probably be under the impression that she was watching a ping-pong match. All the noise, smells, and sounds of the hospital wing blissfully faded away, leaving just a girl and her story. Even the pain in her ankle was nothing more than a dull ache. It looked like waiting would be easier than she had thought. She'd be out of here soon, then.
But then, her ears twitched as she heard a decently loud rustling noise from the bed next to her. Her focus wavered for a second, but when there was no other sound, she shrugged it off and leaned further into the book.
"Is that your first time reading the book, or do you tend to reread them too?" A bold voice pulled Gemima down from the clouds, and back to earth. She instantly froze, trying to get her bearings. ...Who was that?
Her fingers dug into the worn leather book cover. She took a deep breath and dared a glance over the top of it. The boy from earlier was staring straight at her. Their eyes met, and a piercing blue shocked her gaze. She squeaked and ducked back behind the walls of her literary fortress.
Ohhh, boy. Well, he'd definitely seen her now. There was only a short window of time in which she could decide to go out and face the music, or just die of embarrassment. Even after so many months of experiencing her own social scene, and meeting new people, interacting with someone one on one like this was still somewhat nerve-wracking.
Gemima decided to spare her dignity. She awkwardly cleared her throat and gradually lowered the book, eventually laying it face up on her lap. Cheeks hot, she turned to the boy and politely inclined her head.
"Uh, this is the first time I've read this particular book," she answered shakily. "But, yeah, I like to reread stuff too." Gem gave the boy a sheepish smile. Perhaps she could still save this first encounter. "...How about you? Do you like to read?"─•••─

At first it didn't seem as if the girl would respond to him. She didn't say anything and Kim could see her fingers imperceptibly dig into the worn leather book cover. He wondered if she felt nervous, or just didn't want to be disturbed right now. Perhaps he shouldn't have tried to start up a conversation with her, if that was the case. Kim knew what it was like to want to be left alone. And then, she peeked over the top of her book at him. Well, that was kind of cute.
There was just something about a girl when they did that that made him think it was adorable.
But the Ravenclaw took things to a further level with him.
She squeaked and ducked back behind the makeshift book-wall between them. Kim couldn't help but chuckle. Okay, he was officially amused by her, and was interested in finding out more about his fellow bedmate. He watched as the Ravenclaw slowly lowered the book, until it was on her lap on the bed. Luckily, she quickly seemed to recover from her initial shock, and was able to form coherent words. But Kim could see that her cheeks were turning a bit pink.
Or was it red? He couldn't quite tell from the angle.
When she finally looked up at him again, Kim's lips twitched a little.
He tried to school his expression, not wanting to be seen as rude. After all, that wasn't his intention. "Mm. I've read countless books. It's one of my favorite things to do. That one, is actually pretty good. Have you been to the library yet? They have a lot of selections." Kim told her, not sure if the book was her own or from the library at Hogwarts. The girl was doing a good job at keeping his attention, being here wasn't that bad.

Hex-#433687─•••─The boy didn't seem too affected by Gemima's floundering. It might have been a trick of her mind, but she thought she saw his lips quirk up a bit in amusement. His expression changed quickly, though, and Gem leaned forward a bit as he began to speak.
"I've read countless books," he drawled, looking much more interested than he was a few seconds earlier. "It's one of my favorite things to do. That one is actually pretty good. Have you been to the library yet? They have a lot of selections."
Gemima's eyes instantly lit up. Now here was something she could work with! "Dozens of times. It's practically my second home at school. And it's also honestly a good place to nap..." A mental image of the cozy armchair nook flitted through her mind, with its plush cushions and soft candlelight. She wished she were there now, instead of in a hospital bed.
"What sort of books do you like to read?" she asked curiously. "I like romance and adventure. Muggle sci-fi and fantasy is also really fun to read." She thought for a moment.Oh right! She should probably introduce herself, since the two of them would probably be stuck here for a little while.
"Uh, by the way, I'm Gemima, but my friends call me Gem. First year Ravenclaw." Gem smiled in what she hoped was in a friendly manner. "It's nice to meet you." She wasn't sure why she had added the bit about friends. The two of them had just met, after all. This boy was definitely intriguing, however, so she was looking forward to getting to know him, even if it was only for one evening.─•••─

The girl's eyes lit up when he mentioned books and Kim could instantly tell she was an avid reader. Her response confirmed this. "Always nice to meet a fellow reader." He said smoothly and thought for a moment when asked what type of books he preferred to read. There were many options! How could he choose just one or two? "That's a good question. I'm not sure. There are so many books out there in the world to choose!" He said.
"I just want to read them all! Otherwise, you might miss something if you only stick to one category." Kim said with a faint twitch of his lips and tilted his head to the side, seeming to contemplate something. Honestly, he was actually giving the girl's question some thought because she'd asked a question, which implied she wanted to know the answer. He grimaced as a bout of dizziness overcame him. Right, he was at the Hospital Wing now.
Kim was here for a reason.
Not just to talk to other patients while waiting to be looked at by someone.
It seemed as if he'd actually temporarily forgotten about that particular fact when he was talking to the Ravenclaw. Hopefully it didn't get worse before he could see someone. But during that time, Kim had come up with a suitable answer for her. "If I had to choose, I'd go with adventure and DIY books. I've always been interested in the world out there and I want to learn how to do lots of things." He said, nodding to his bedmate.
Gem spoke again, introducing herself and essentially implying she wanted to be friends with him. Kim raised a brow but decided he didn't mind getting to know her a bit better.
She was an interesting character.
"Kim. Kim Sato. First Year Gryffindor. As you can see from the colors." He said, gesturing down at himself. "I look forward to spending more time with you." Kim told her straightforwardly, seeing nothing wrong with his words, even though they came across as a little flirtatious. But it depended on how one looked at it. He let his eyes flicker over Gem and nodded towards her raised foot. "How'd that happen?" Kim asked, curious about it.
Around this time, someone FINALLY came over to see him and after a few quick questions, a spell had been cast on his head and his nose. Kim was glad that it had been nothing serious and that he'd only have to stay there for an hour before leaving the place. An hour wasn't long. And he was pleased he had some company in the meantime. Gem was turning out to be very entertaining and they happened to have at least one thing in common. Perhaps more as well.

Hex-#433687─•••─"Always nice to meet a fellow reader." The boy replied. He thought for a moment before adding, "I just want to read them all! Otherwise, you might miss something if you only stick to one category."
Gemima nodded sagely. "So many books and so little time!" she exclaimed. He nodded and continued on to say that he preferred adventure and DIY books. Gem beamed.
"That's something we have in common, then! Learning about the world around you is really...What's the word..?" She scrunched up her nose, in deep thought. "Invigorating! That's what it is." she giggled. "I'd like to have a big skillset too."
She suddenly noticed that the boy was wincing in discomfort again. She started to ask what was wrong, but stopped herself.
Oh right. She'd honestly forgotten where they were right now. Funny how a good conversation could do that--make all your worries melt away. She grimaced herself as her ankle stung particularly strongly. Gem looked back over to see the boy raising a single eyebrow at her. She peered back at him quizzically.
"Kim Sato. First Year Gryffindor." he said in response to her earlier introduction, breaking the silence yet again."I look forward to spending more time with you."
Gem found that her cheeks were growing pink. She averted her eyes to her book again, a bit flustered. Where did that come from?
One of the interns came over to administer healing magic to Kim, leaving Gemima to stew in her thoughts for a few agonizing minutes. How should I respond to that? Did he mean for it to come off as so...forward?
"How'd that happen?"
Gemima coughed and snapped her head over to look back at Kim. The intern was gone, and he was looking pointedly at her foot. Great, the second time she was caught being distracted."Oh, this? I, uh, fell out of a tree."
As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she cringed. Now that she had actually said it out loud, her predicament sounded sillier than ever. She twiddled her fingers anxiously.
"How about you?" she asked, hoping to deflect a little. "What're you in for?"─•••─

The girl suddenly seemed to have become a bit flustered and Kim tilted his head to the side, curious. Could he have said something to make her feel that way? It was only after some careful thought that he realized what it could have been. Ah, that was what it was. A smirk came to his lips. She was really innocent if that was the case. But he found that cute. Innocence was something to be protected, as her name kinda implied.
Well, the word he thought of when she said her name.
The word he most likely was going to end up calling her from now on.
But Kim didn't bother to correct her though, as he wanted to see how Gem would react to his words. After the intern was gone and they were left to themselves again, he returned his attention to her, which inspired his interest in what had landed her in the hospital in the first place. When she told him she'd fallen out of a tree, Kim raised a brow. "Zhēn de ma?" He asked, lapsing into Mandarin by accident, without realizing.
"What were you doing up there?" Kim asked with a twitch of his lips, although his smile faltered when Gem asked about what had brought him. That brought back his memory of why he was there in the first place. It was all that damned Huffie's fault! Kim scowled at the thought and quickly pushed the image of the boy's face out of his mind. Well, he supposed he could give her a brief explanation. After all, she'd told him.
"Mine's not as bad as yours. My face met with a door and my head met with the floor, so I thought I'd come for a check-up." Kim said with a shrug.
He didn't intend on elaborating on this.

Hex-#433687⍣─────── ⚝⚝⚝ ───────⍣Kim looked quite amused, from both Gemima's flustered response, and her embarrassing tree mention. She huffed quietly and crossed her arms at him. She was sure she was the color of a ripe tomato just about now, but she held her ground.
Kim asked something in Mandarin, but Gem could only half understand it. Her mum only knew a handful of phrases, having been born and raised in the US, and while her dad was fluent in the language, he never really had time to teach her anything. It would be useful, though. Gem thought.
Kim realized his mistake, and smiled lightly. "What were you doing up there?" he corrected himself.
"Reading." she replied shortly. It was still rather embarrassing to talk about.
Kim smirked and told her his own reason for coming to the wing. His smile slowly dripped from his face as he spoke. Soon, he was glowering, his mind clearly in a different place. Gem knew the look wasn't directed at her, but she still felt somewhat uneasy. She definitely wouldn't want to be on the actual receiving end of such a glare.
She waited for him to continue, but he obviously didn't want to elaborate further. But she was still curious as to what happened!
Why is he so angry about it? Did someone hurt him?
She swallowed the swirling questions and opted to change the subject, instead.
"How are you liking Hogwarts so far?" she asked. It was a pretty baseline subject, but they didn't need to know each other's life stories or anything. At least, not yet.
"I'm in love with all the amazing classes we get to attend," she admitted. "I guess that's part of why I was sorted into Ravenclaw."⍣─────── ⚝⚝⚝ ───────⍣
