Hex-#433687─•••─"I think Gem sounds sweet. I've never heard of your name before."Daniella said.
Gemima's cheeks flushed a slight pink, and she looked bashfully at her lap.
"Why, thank you. I always thought it was kind of an old lady's name, you know." She looked back up at Daniella, eyes wide. "I'm glad you like it."
Gemima was now turned fully towards her new friend. She wanted to get to know Daniella better, as well. The day was pleasant enough--good old sunshine seeped through the windows in the bare room, and their hushed voices were only supported by the peaceful sounds of the study room.
"What house are you in?" asked Daniella suddenly. She sounded eager. Gemima blinked in surprise, taken aback for a bit, but then she smiled and nodded warmly.
"Ravenclaw! Wise, intelligent eagles, and all that." she said proudly. She waved away the last few words with a playful grin. "I suppose I am smart, but sometimes I feel like I don't fit into the role of the ideal Ravenclaw student, so to speak,"
Gemima clasped her hands in her lap as she continued. "I get good marks in my classes and everything, but Ravenclaws are supposed to be wise, and confident. And as you might be able to tell," she gestured to herself sheepishly, "I'm not that confident. I don't feel especially wise either; I've been told I can get a bit spacey sometimes."
Gem sighed and rested her chin on her fists. The awkward feeling was still there. Talking so much, and especially talking about herself was new to her. She just hoped that Daniella wouldn't find her too weird, once she got to know her better.
Gemima blew a strand of hair out of her face. "But enough about me," she murmured, looking the other girl up and down curiously. "What house are you in, for starters?"─•••─

"Ravenclaw! Wise, intelligent eagles, and all that." Gemima grinned. "I suppose I am smart, but sometimes I feel like I don't fit into the role of the ideal Ravenclaw student, so to speak. I get good marks in my classes and everything, but Ravenclaws are supposed to be wise, and confident." Daniella thought the girl seemed pretty smart, even though she didn't really know her yet. "And as you might be able to tell, I'm not that confident. I don't feel especially wise either; I've been told I can get a bit spacey sometimes."
Gemima paused and sighed. Daniella looked at her, and wondered if it was her turn to talk now. But suddenly, Gem opened her mouth again. "But enough about me. What house are you in, for starters?" She curiously looked at Daniella.
Dani smiled. "I'm in Hufflepuff!" She looked to see Gemima's reaction, then remembered how the other girl had told her a lot more about her house. "Uh, you know. We're trustworthy, loyal, hardworking" she shrugged, "I'd say I'm a loyal person. Hardworking not so much." Daniella looked at her textbook on the table. "I don't really enjoy work, but if I try my best I get good grades." She thought for a moment and then continued, "Some people think of Hufflepuff as the least clever house, which is probably because most of us don't like to brag. But my dad was in Hufflepuff too, and he's really smart!" Suddenly Daniella noticed how much she missed him. She hadn't thought about him for a while, and hadn't realised how important he was to her. Don't cry, it's not like I'll never see dad again. I'll just send him an owl later.
Dani cleared her throat and quietly said: "Well that's my house."

Hex-#433687─•••─When Daniella began to speak, her face immediately lit up. Her energy was contagious, and Gemima felt herself leaning forward to give her whole attention. Now here was a person who had confidence, who was actually used to talking to people. Gemima felt slightly envious of her, but she pushed the feeling aside. That was silly to even consider. She would find her own voice, in time. At least, she hoped so.
"I'm in Hufflepuff!" Daniella exclaimed. Gem nodded. Trustworthy, endurant, and loyal. She hadn't known Dani for all that long, but she definitely seemed like she had those traits. "I'd say I'm a loyal person. Hardworking not so much." the other girl admitted. Gemima followed her eyes as she glanced at the textbook.
"Well, I don't know about that. You seemed pretty determined when you actually understood the material. And hard work can come up in places other than school."
She nodded as Daniella continued. "I think you're quite clever, as well." But then Daniella paused, stopping at the mention of her dad. She seemed to be lost in thought. Maybe it was just a trick of the light, but her eyes seemed to mist over. Gemima furrowed her brow in concern.
Daniella cleared her throat. "Well, that's my house."she murmured, all previous energy gone. Gemima eyed her doubtfully. Obviously something had happened with her dad, but she didn't know whether to ask about it or not. They weren't that close yet, after all. "You sound very proud to be part of Hufflepuff,"she finally said. "...Did you want to talk about anything? I've been told I'm a pretty good listener."
Gem didn't know what exactly she would say if Daniella did feel comfortable opening up, but she knew when someone needed some reassurance. If they really were going to be friends, she felt like she owed Dani at least that.─•••─

"...Did you want to talk about anything? I've been told I'm a pretty good listener." Gemima sounded concerned. Daniella hesitated for a moment. There wasn't anything in particular to talk about, but Gem had probably noticed something was up when she mentioned her dad. What if she assumed something bad had happened to him? Did it seem so? Relax, why do I care so much? Dani didn't really feel like talking about personal things, but she also didn't want Gem to think something was wrong, so it would be better to just explain. Besides, Gemima would probably understand. She seemed genuine and kind.
"It's just... I miss my dad," she said slowly, "He's fine, don't worry! But this is the first time I've been away from him for so long." Daniella was nervously fidgeting with her quill while talking. "See, it's that simple. I didn't want you to think something bad happened to him. I guess I'm just an emotional person." She grinned at that last sentence. Or maybe I express it differently than others, she added in her mind.
"I actually wanted to write him later, I don't know why I haven't done it yet." Dani actually thought she knew why: She had a habit of procrastinating. She also had a habit of saying everything she thought without meaning to, which she was doing right now. She was talking way too much about herself, Gemima probably wanted to talk as well.
"Eh.. Sorry if it's too personal, but, don't you miss your family?" Great, this was really something people want to talk aboubt. Where did my social skills go?

"Ah." Gemima nodded. Well, it was good that nothing dire had happened to him. She wondered if Dani was especially close to her dad. She liked to think that she was close to her own parents as well, but they definitely weren't spending as much time together these days.
"Being emotional is fine," she said in response to Dani's worries. "Every person is different, you know? I can be quite emotional too."She paused and listened again. "You should totally write to him! It sounds like you two are very close, and I'm sure he would love to hear how things are going for you."
"Eh.. Sorry if it's too personal, but, don't you miss your family?" Daniella asked finally. She looked like she regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth. Gem could definitely relate to that feeling. She hmmed and lightly drummed her fingers on the table as she thought.
"Of course I do," she said. "They're quite a ways away from Hogwarts. We live in Brighton, where my mum's a model and my dad works for the Ministry." Gem's gaze drifted to the window. She missed the ocean too. "I actually have an older sister, Cath, who's a fourth year in Gryffindor. She's become a bit more distant lately, so I thought we'd have more time to spend together once I started at Hogwarts, but that hasn't really been the case." She smiled sadly. "But you know, I'm sure it'll be fine. My family is full of busy people, yet we always manage to stick together."
Now she was feeling awkward again, too. Maybe she should change the subject. "Speaking of Brighton, have you ever been? It's a beautiful place."⍣─────── ⚝⚝⚝ ───────⍣
