Things seemed quiet as the dust from the previous round settled. Last game, the two teams Jake had been watching hadn't stopped talking to each other. Things had gotten out of control quickly. This duel was going VERY differently...and as the Gryffindor team was ready to get back into the fight, Jake watched four pairs of determined eyes all watching each other silently, waiting to make the first move. The next moves were going to be really important, Jake could tell. The time was ticking, and they were almost at the halfway mark. Whoever took the lead here could have a huge advantage going into the second half. And everybody on the teams seemed careful.

Jake half expected the spells to start flying wildly, but that wasn't what happened. Not really. SOME did...Alec cast a wind jinx right in the direction of Piper, who tried to respond with another tickling jinx. But Alec was too fast for that, and he managed to duck out of the way of the returning spell. The wind WOULD push Piper back, but she would feel her strength bolstered. Astrea had turned her wand on Piper, just as Rose did the same on the Gryffindor side. Jake watched curiously. He'd never seen a duel go like this. Both Alec and Piper would feel some of their strength returning, as Astrea and Rose took support, giving their team-mates some strength back after the opposing teams had drained it with assaults of spells.

Piper and Alec couldn't last forever, Jake knew, but they were being kept in the fight by their teams healing. As he watched both pairs he couldn't help but nervously feel like they were on the verge of an explosion. All four of them still had a lot left, and as the time continued to tick, it was only a matter of time before the attacks started coming again. It was a waiting pattern now. Both teams seemingly biding their time before the full attack, bringing their hurt partners back up in energy. Anything could happen next. Jake was still as a statue as he continued to watch and wait.

With renewed strength Alec set out to level the playing fields. If he could make a spell this round they'd be doing better. He'd be doing better. Alec took a deep breath before glancing over at the opposing team. A shot to turn everything in their favor. What spell? Alec racked him mind but there was nothing perfect, nothing he could use that could hold them back enough.

Then he remembered Ventus, the older girl had been using it. It certainly wasn't the best option he thought he could have chosen, but, it was flashy. They needed something eye-catching. He didn't want the duel to get boring this quick. The silence was bugging him.

Alec chose to cast Ventus, and with an air of confidence he did as much. Alec didn't let himself waver. Doubts cast themselves broadly throughout if his mind, yet he hit. In the midst of realizing this he also had to dodge. Piper had cast a spell before. Back to the more important point. He hit.

Relief flooded him, and when he turned to the side to cast a glance at Rose he would find she was healing him. Alec smiled. “Clearly not as good at dodging as you. Thanks.” He'd been targeted earlier perhaps it was because his lack of a skill in dodging? Whatever the case, he certainly felt ready for anything.

Rose watched the duel carefully. This could go either way from where it was now. Rose was tempted to just abandon strategy, but she knew that they had to be careful if they were going to win this. Alec moved first, casting a strong Wind Jinx at Piper. "Good idea," she said, nodding towards her partner. Rose didn't think it would last as long as Astrea's had earlier, but it was an effective spell to cast. A tickling jinx was cast Alec's way, but he was able to smoothly jump out of the way.

Rose knew he had taken more of the brunt of the spells so far, and she turned her wand on him instead. Good to be strategic, right? A second healing spell on Alec, and she saw some of his strength return. "No problem," she said, a small smile appearing on her face. Though she wasn't sure what he meant by the dodging part, since nobody had really cast at her. She shrugged it off.

Rose noticed Astrea casting the same spell on Piper, which was annoying. "You know, they could at least be friendly through the duel," Rose grumbled under her breath, half to Alec and half to herself. The Slytherins were being extremely cold to them, barely talking at all. Given, they had won their last duel, so maybe this was some sort of posturing strategy?

Whatever it was, it wasn't really working. They were on pretty even ground.

A gust of wind from the Gryffindor side of the stage caught Piper's breath and she stumbled backwards, slightly more winded. A spell from Astrea melted into her, however, and the Slytherin felt herself strengthened more, and definitely less wilted. She offered Astrea a brief but sincere "Thanks." and tried her luck against Alec. Unfortunately, her tickling spell missed, not hitting anyone for the first time in the round. Even more annoyingly, Rose was healing Alec so he looked a bit healthier and determined as well. Piper gritted her teeth. There was no telling which way the round would go, but there was no reason to give up just yet.

The electrifying buzz of Astrea’s primarily-offensive magic turning on its heel to focus on healing Piper, who was comparatively worse for wear. On the other side of the duelling piste, the Gryffindor team found the same plan prudent enough to utilise. A sharp nod and a look from the corner of her eye met her partner’s word of appreciation, the bulk of Astrea’s attention kept toward their opponents. It would do no good if they suffered because of her own distraction.

She could physically feel the cool blast of magical wind assaulting her duel partner in much the same way they had done to the Lions, but it was to be a temporary disadvantage. Early discouragement only bred a certain type of pessimism Astrea would like to avoid in the duelling room, after all.

Piper Clark actively dodges.
Active Dodge: 5 + 0.25 x (7 - 4 (Ventus)) = 5.75 → 6 Bonus to Evasion.
Jake had known that things were moments away from exploding...and he hadn't been wrong. Piper, still disoriented from the gust of wind would not try to cast while keeping her balance. Maybe she knew her energy was low. Instead she tried to dodge away from Rose's incoming knockback jinx. She almost made it too...

Almost...

The spell only grazed her, clipping her in the side. But between the knockback jinx and the wind, Piper was truly thrown off balance. And Alec on the Gryffindor team had laser-focused on her. The knockback that shot towards Piper was fast as any Jake had ever seen. And it collided perfectly with its target. The force was such that Piper was knocked straight backwards and landed on the ground with a thud. Jake cringed. "Are you ok...?" he asked.

Jake felt another shudder go through his spine as he looked in Astrea's eyes. He really really really really hoped she wasn't going to break the rules. He didn't want to have to try to tell her not to. With her partner down the duel tide was changing, but it didn't look like Astrea was going to let that happen lightly.

The 'Expelliarmus' was cast, but when it did, Jake saw the spell diverge into two once more. One towards Alec, and one towards Rose. It seemed that if Astrea's team-mate was going to be out of the fight, Astrea was taking the Gryffindors with her.

Rose narrowly managed to escape the disarming spell, but Alec, usually so quick, wasn't so lucky. An inch too slow was all it took. Moments after he had sent Piper to the ground, his own wand would rip from his hand and clatter to the floor in front of him.

Both teams had taken heavy blows. And as if there wasn't enough fuel on the fire there was an announcement Jake had to make.

"Um, the duel is halfway done!" the boy called out, to let everyone know they were on limited time, so nobody would be surprised when it ended.

As the effects of the Wind Jinx faded, she saw Piper focusing on dodging any spells coming her way. "Flipendo," she murmured. The spell was good, but it only barely hit Piper, not hitting her with its full force. It still did some damage, though, so it was effective. As she saw Alec's spell out of the corner of her eye, she turned her head. It was a perfect Knockback Jinx, and it hit Piper square in the chest. The strength of the spell knocked Piper down.

"That was brilliant," she said, with a smile towards Alec. They had hit her pretty good.

Astrea somehow sent two spells at the same time again, one towards Alec and one towards Rose. The redhead was able to dodge, though Astrea's aim towards her was a little bit off. Her aim towards Alec, however, was good, which sucked. Alec's wand flew out of his hand.

Rose took in a deep breath, holding her stance. "How does she do that?" she grumbled to herself.

Alec cast his spell, and as exhilarating as it was to have it hit, his eyebrows did twist in concern as he watched the girl hit the floor. Targeting a second year. He wasn't even giving her a break. Alec shook his head to get himself to focus. Whatever, it was her fault if she didn't know how to dodge. Alec looked towards Rose as she spoke, nodding. “We make a great team” He words were possibly meant to tease her over them being so in sync when they needed it. Then again, she definitely was a lot of fun to work with, and thus far there hadn't been any proof of them being otherwise. Wrapped up in this, Alec didn't notice the older slytherin casting a spell. By the time he did he couldn't do anything about it. All he could do was watch as his wand flew out of his hand.

Right, next time make sure you watch so you want doesn't go flying out of your hand, something important to note.
