Selena had arrived to Potions class a bit early, just as she liked. In her philosophy, it was better to be early because if you weren't early you were late. Taking advantage of the time she had before class was scheduled to start, Selena began unpacking her bag and taking out ingredients and her cauldron. Once everything was out on the table she began to organize all of her supplies until they were just right. She could work in a messy area, but not for something as precise as potions.

When she was finished setting up, she turned to the front of the class and waited for the lesson to begin. Potions was an intriguing subject to her, and she did not want to miss a thing. The students filed into the room and so the class began. Selena took some occasional notes, but off in the margins of her paper she sketched random things. By the time the lecture was complete she had drawn several peacock feathers hanging off an intricate dreamcatcher.

Now was not the time to continue the drawing though. She had work to do. The assignment was to correctly brew a Forgetfulness Potion before the end of the class. It was a pretty simple potion so it shouldn't be too hard, but Selena could imagine many different ways this class could end in disaster.

Spotting another Ravenclaw, Selena turned to her. "Hello!" she said cheerfully. "Would you like to partner up for the assignment? I've got everything laid out already, so we can get to work." Selena smiled and awaited her answer. She hoped that the girl would accept and not be one of the people that turned someone down immediately.

Adelaide strode into the Potions classroom right as the bell reverberated throughout the castle. Potions was definitely a subject Adelaide thought very interesting, along with DADA and Charms. The intense care and concentration that went into making a potion, ensuring that every ingredient was precise and perfect, was something Adelaide was particularly good at. As a perfectionist, even the smallest things had to be done with the utmost concentration so it was perfect.

The blonde jotted down notes during the lecture, making sure she didn't miss anything important. Her gaze only strayed from her parchment whenever she heard a voice beside her, another Ravenclaw girl being the source of it. "Sure," She gave the girl a gentle smile before turning to the equipment that the girl already had set up. Adelaide immediately took notice of the doodles sketched on the girl's parchment, and frowned disapprovingly. Had she just agreed to partner up with someone who didn't even pay attention? "You really shouldn't be doodling during class," She reprimanded the girl, "especially during Potions. This is a very precise subject that requires the utmost concentration. I have all the steps wrote down, as I had been paying attention-" She gave the girl a look as if to say 'unlike you', "so if we just follow these steps the potion will turn out perfect."

She put her parchment down in the middle of the desk, so both her and the other Ravenclaw were able to see the steps clearly. "How about you add the two drops of Lethe River Water to the cauldron and then gently heat for 20 seconds? I'll crush the mistletoe berries into a medium-fine powder while you do that, so we have that ready for when we need it." Whether the girl would take offense to Adelaide bossing her around, the blonde would grab the mortar and pestle before adding, "Now remember, only 2 drops. No more, and no less. Also gently heat for 20 seconds, you got that?"

As she placed the 4 mistletoe berries into the mortar, she said as an afterthought, "Also, I'm Adelaide Barlowe. I don't think I told you that." Adelaide started to crush the mistletoe berries into a medium-fine powder, giving the task her utmost concentration and being as precise as possible.

The girl agreed to the partnership and Selena smiled. "Awesome. I'm Selena by the way. Selena Arden." They both turned to the tools and ingredients that she had previously set up. She was feeling quite proud of her meticulous setup until the other girl reprimanded her for the doodles all over the margins of her notes. As the girl continued getting on her for drawing, she trailed off, but the implication was as clear as day. "Sorry?" Who did this girl think she was? They had just met and the girl was already acting judgemental and uptight towards her.

"For your information, I was paying attention. I just have a better memory than you, so I don't need the pages and pages full of notes. I can function completely fine on few notes. I just have an overactive imagination that causes me to doodle, but obviously you don't know what an imagination is." The potion will turn out perfect, the girl had said. Well, did she take into account for human error? No one was perfect, so she would probably do at least one thing wrong. Just because her notes were good didn't mean her actual potion skills would be too.

Even though the other Ravenclaw had seemed to take the lead, Selena would go along with it... for now. She took the dropper to add the drops of the River Lethe water, when the girl had to go and open her mouth again. "No really?" Selena asked sarcastically. "I totally didn't get that from the first time you said it. Thanks for clearing it up." Anyone would be able to hear the sarcasm dripping from her tone.

The girl finally introduced herself as Adelaide Barlowe. Selena thought even if they got off on a bit of a rough start, it could be redeemed here. "Nice to meet you Adelaide. Sorry if we got off on a rough start. I just don't like people criticizing my work, especially work that's not schoolwork," she admitted.

Adelaide scoffed, turning to look at the girl - Selena, she had said her name was - with an unamused expression, "I have a great memory, thank you very much. Notes are very useful, especially for studying in the future. Is that 'better memory than you' going to be able to hold every detail from this lesson when it's time for exams? Do you remember every single thing you've ever learnt in Hogwarts without taking notes? Hm?" She asked mockingly, tilting her head to the side, "Oh, I totally don't know what an imagination is. Care to tell me?" Sarcasm was laced in her tone, "Seriously, though, it's perfectly fine to have an 'overactive imagination', but maybe not in a Potions class when you need to pay your full attention so the potion doesn't blow up in your face. Just a suggestion."

The blonde rolled her eyes at the girl's words, "You are so welcome, truly," She trailed off as she continued to crush the mistletoe berries, the powder wasn't as medium-fine as Adelaide wanted so she had to continue until it was perfect for the potion. She noticed Selena's obvious attempt to redeem the conversation and merely nodded, "I understand that. I hate criticism too, but I wasn't saying anything bad about your art. This class just isn't the most suitable place to do it." She said matter-of-factly. Even though Selena had tried to redeem the conversation, Adelaide had a nagging sense that this class was not going to go smoothly in the slightest.

While Adelaide was still crushing the mistletoe berries, she asked Selena, "Have you added the two drops yet? And gently heated it for 20 seconds? I'm pretty sure the next step is to add 2 Valerian sprigs to the cauldron, so I can do that once you're done. Though, I'm still crushing these berries, as the powder isn't exactly medium-fine, so it's not ready yet for the potion." To anyone else, the powder would likely look ready enough, but not to Adelaide. Even though the berries had been crushed and the powder was nearly medium-fine, there were still tiny chunks of berry and Adelaide would not stop crushing until it was exactly medium-fine. It had to be perfect.

Adelaide just wasn't getting the hint was she? "I know that notes are useful and no, I'm certainly not saying that I will remember every little detail that is spoken in class. I take notes, you just happened to catch me one of the times I wasn't." The sarcasm Selena laced into her voice was bounced back at her when Adelaide continued to speak. "Let me think. An imagination is that little thing you don't have. No potion of mine will be 'blowing up in my face' either."

As Selena tried to keep working, more sarcasm could be heard from her partner. Instead of retaliating however, she simply rolled her eyes at the ceiling, obviously annoyed with the conversation. "Well, that's probably the only thing we have in common then. Even if you weren't criticizing my art, you don't need to make comments and remarks about it or my doodling habits. I won't be hurting your Potions grade anytime soon, so I can't see why you need to intervene."

She let the Lethe river water heat for the next 20 seconds before adding it to the potion. Everything about the potion besides the current conversation were going perfectly fine, just as she had said it would. Let Adelaide think about that.

"Yes, I've done all that," she responded to Adelaide neutrally. Once glancing over at the other girl's nearly perfect work though, she was immediately irritated once more. "Please. The powder looks fine to me. You don't have to be a complete perfectionist all the time. And before you say anything, no, I don't think the potion will blow up if you add the powder like it is." The powder was completely fine to put in the cauldron. All Adelaide was doing was holding them up now. Selena could now see that this was a partnership that could not be redeemed.

I am so sorry for the late reply!

"That time you spent doodling could mean you missed valuable information that you need to know, but alas it's not really my issue if you fail your exams is it?" She pouted mockingly at Selena. It was the girl's fault if she didn't do good in her exams because she spent the class doodling instead of paying attention - Adelaide only needed to worry about herself, and she always paid attention - but what did worry her was having to be paired up with Selena. If this girl possibly ends up effecting Adelaide's grade in Potions because the potion they're making today turns out terrible, the two are going to have some problems. The blonde barks out a laugh in disbelief, "I have no imagination? I do actually, I just know not to use it when I'm meant to be paying attention," she couldn't help but roll her eyes.

Adelaide scoffed, "Actually, genius, if this Potion turns out terrible today it could end up effecting both of us, so I'd suggest following my lead since I'm the one who paid attention and knows what to do, got it?"

Continuing to crush the mistletoe berries, she waited for Selena's confirmation that the girl had heated the Lethe River Water. She looked up from the mortar and pestle once Selena said she had finished. Adelaide was about to suggest that she could add the Valerian sprigs now, until the other first year just had to open her mouth. Her jaw clenched as Selena remarked she didn't 'have to be a complete perfectionist all of the time', "There was still chunks of berry which doesn't count as medium-fine. We can't risk adding it to the potion or it mightn't turn out exactly right, is that an issue? I've finished it now anyway," she gestured to the powdered mistletoe berries in the mortar that was sitting on the desk, ready to be thrown into the cauldron.

Shrugging, she continued, "The next step is to add 2 Valerian sprigs and then we stir 3 times clockwise, wave our wand and leave it to brew for a while," she checked her notes again to make sure she had got the steps correct, which she had. "I'll do that bit, and then we wait," the Ravenclaw done the steps she had just recited a mere few moments ago before continuing, "did you get the instructions down for the next part? Or were you too busy doodling?" An unneeded dig, but it had came out of Adelaide's mouth before she could stop herself and she wasn't exactly sorry.

Selena smiled tightly at the other Ravenclaw. "And the time you spend criticizing me is time you could better spend making sure your measurements are more precise," she said with a glance down at the girl's work. "Anyways, I have two ears to listen to the lecture with, so I do not need to write down every little word the professor says now do I? It may surprise you to hear that I have yet to critically fail any exam," she replied, happy to be given the chance to prove little miss perfect wrong.

"I did pay attention, and could do this just as well, if not better without you." Selena rolled her eyes with no intention of following Adelaide's lead in the potion making today. She turned carefully back to her work, narrowing her eyes with a bit more rage in them as she worked. Adelaide was getting on her nerves more than most anyone else could do. She was dearly wishing that she had chosen another partner for this project rather than Adelaide.

When Selena commented on Adelaide's perfectionistic nature, she was pleased to see the girl's jaw tighten. It was a small victory, but a victory nonetheless. "Glad you've given your approval, now will you please add the berries?" she asked. "And you don't have to take another half an hour to simply put them in the cauldron either." If they hurried up a bit more, they could finish and never have to talk to the other again, but Adelaide seemed intent on making this already painful process take even longer than it had to.

"I did not write the instructions down for the next part, but I remember them perfectly fine," she said in response to the dig. Selena found herself wishing that she could be in Defense Against the Dark Arts with Adelaide instead so that she could duel the girl and wipe the superior look right off her face. DADA was more of her thing, she performed better than she did in Potions anyways.

Adelaide's eyes narrowed. Her measurements were precise, she always made sure of it; this girl clearly didn't know what she was talking about. "Fine. Do what you want, I don't care," her tone was sharp, "I was just trying to give you some advice but at the end of the day, I only need to worry about myself and you really don't matter to me," she said.

If looks could kill, Adelaide wouldn't be surprised if Selena dropped dead right now. The blonde glared at Selena, discarding what she was doing for the time being, "Right," the word was followed with a sharp bang as she slammed her hands on the table, "you came over to me. I could've perfectly well done this all on my own. What, just because I tried to give you some friendly advice so you don't fail your classes you get mad at me?" She took a deep breath to regain her thoughts, which were currently racing a mile a minute in both anger and annoyance, "I don't know what your problem is, but personally, I'd just like to get this potion done. Alright?" She didn't wait for a response before she turned back to her work and continued.

The Ravenclaw picked up the mortar with the powdered mistletoe berries, "Apologies for not wanting this potion to blow up in our faces," she said sarcastically before adding 2 pinches of the powder to the cauldron. "There," she set the mortar back down before turning to Selena, "how about you do the last bit, since you said you remember the next part perfectly fine," she stepped back to give Selena some room and gestured in an overdramatic fashion at the cauldron, "work your magic."
