The handle of the old wooden door seemed to be stuck. Gemima frowned and wiggled it this way and that, her movements becoming increasingly frantic.

"Come on!" She hissed. She didn't know how to magic doors open yet. It would be a shame if this singular little obstacle thwarted her exploring. And she'd spent so much time pumping herself up beforehand; just getting the nerve to creep down to the abandoned toilets had been a ton of work.

Gem was just about to give up--She definitely didn't want the whole thing to crumble in on itself. It really did look old. But then, the door creaked open, fast. Gemima tripped forward, catching herself just in time. She sighed and cautiously stepped into the dimly lit room. Only a few sparse candles were sat upon the walls. Gemima noticed that they were burnt down to all but wax nubs.

A freezing gale suddenly spun through the room, attacking the already dying candlelight. The young witch pulled out a torch that she had grabbed from her trunk, and switched it on. The beam bounced spookily off the walls. Gemima shivered, and tore her eyes from the leering shadows before her mind could start playing tricks on her.

She pressed onwards, her curiosity outweighing her fear. The whole room was entirely dilapidated. Gem could feel cracked marble under her feet. The stall doors hung by a thread off of hinges, the wood almost eaten entirely away. Gemima's nose tingled at the strong smell of mold and decay.
"Oh, not now--!"

A decently powerful sneeze shot out of her. The sound echoed off the dark walls, and the whole room seemed to shake and groan. Panicked, Gemima planted her feet on the floor and stood her ground.

Thankfully, the room didn't cave in. As soon as it stilled, she exhaled in relief and ventured further. By this point, she was wondering if there was anything worthwhile in this wreck of a bathroom. She'd heard vague rumors about a ghost haunting this place, but she hadn't seen any signs of one.

Gemima stopped in front of one of the mirrors. The glass was dirty, like everything else in there, and spiderwebs of cracks ran across it. She frowned at her reflection, which was fractured in the damaged mirror. Maybe she just wasn't looking hard enough...

Akemi had just finished studying and wanted to walk around and get familiar with the castle. It was still overwhelming when she looked at Hogwarts from the outside, and she always seemed to get lost going from class to class. Of course, there were older students to help her, but she wanted to be able to know when and where all her classes were, without having to rely on the "big kids". It was already embarrassing enough when she accidentally walked into her older sister's class on the whole other side of the castle.

As she was walking down the dark corridor, a loud sneeze emerged from the opened door beside her. Akemi stopped and peeped into the room the noise had come from. She had discovered a large, extremely dirty bathroom that had probably not been used for years. She scanned the bathroom and fixed her eyes on a girl about her age that was staring deep into a broken mirror. Akemi walked into the mess of a bathroom and quietly approached the girl.

"Uhm, excuse you." she smiled awkwardly at the girl. She might as well be polite, first impressions are everything."This place is quite dank, isn't it? Bet this place is haunted. It's always like that in movies anyways. . . Oh! My name is Akemi, by the way--" A cold shiver went down Akemi's spine and she quickly turned around. Nothing was there. The windows were obviously closed, and it wasn't like there really were ghosts here, right? She took a deep breath and turned to face the girl again.

"Erm, sorry about that. I think it's just cold in here." Akemi looked down and realized she was fiddling with the arm sleeve of her robes. She only did that if she was nervous, and worrying about a big, mean, scary ghost attacking her from behind counted as nervous. She quickly looked up again, realizing she was still in conversation. "My name's Akemi. Akemi Yamamoto. Would you mind telling me yours?"

"Uh, excuse you?"

Gemima stiffened as a voice sounded behind her. She slowly swiveled around. Maybe there actually was a ghost in the bathroom!
But no, just a girl stood behind her. She was about Gemima's age, with dark hair and an awkward smile on her face. Gemima exhaled in relief, but she also felt slightly disappointed.

The girl fiddled with the sleeves of her Hufflepuff robes as she spoke.
"This place is quite dank, isn't it? Bet this place is haunted. It's always like that in movies, anyways..."

Gemima gave the girl a small smile of her own. "Yeah, I've definitely heard rumors of a ghost in here. But apparently that was decades ago." she said. Her voice shook a little. This new girl had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, and she still felt a little shy.

As if on cue, however, a sudden gust of icy cold wind swept through the bathroom. The walls and doors rattled eerily, and a small shower of dust rained down from the rafters. Both girls shuddered and cautiously looked round the room, but there wasn't anything of note. For now, at least. The candlelight flickered frantically, but thankfully didn't go out.

"..I think it's just cold in here." the girl whispered. She glanced down at her hands, which were still worrying her sleeve. Gemima's eyes flicked down as well. She had a habit of fidgeting with her own clothes when nerves struck her.

The girl looked back up again, rather sheepishly. "My name's Akemi. Akemi Yamamoto," she said. "Would you mind telling me yours?"

Gemima flushed slightly, caught off guard. "Oh, of course!" she squeaked, hair falling over her face. She hurriedly tucked the offending strands behind her ear and straightened her posture. "I'm Gemima. Gemima Sable." She said, echoing Akemi's words. She nodded politely at the other girl. People call me Gem, too, she thought. But I don't know you that well yet.

"Well," she murmured. "Uh, since you're here, would you like to join me?" She held up her torch, feeling a bit more confident again. "I'm on a mission to figure out the secrets of this place! It'll be a proper adventure." Gem couldn't help but grin. Maybe together, they could actually find something cool in this place. "If you'd like to, that is..."

She faltered a bit. This was a very random proposition, and from a total stranger at that. She wouldn't blame Akemi if she said no.

"I'm Gemima. Gemima Sable." the girl replied. Everything was off to a great start! They both knew each other's names, so maybe, just maybe, they could hold hands and skip out of the haunted bathroom. Then they could talk about their future plans and bond over a sweet treat from Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour.

Akemi was about to propose her plan of ultimate friendship when Germima proposed an idea of her own. "Since you're here, would you like to join me? I'm on a mission to figure out the secrets of this place! It'll be a proper adventure." Adventure? Though the idea of leaving the grimy bathroom was tempting, exploring the bathroom (and maybe finding some hidden gold) seemed way more fun. And Gemima seemed like a pretty cool person. Akemi really wanted to be friends with her, even if they just met.

"Of course!" She exclaimed. "Where would you like to look first?" Akemi walked into a bathroom stall and peeked into the toilet, just to make sure there wasn't any gold hidden inside. People always hid their gold in toilets. Obviously. As she was peering into the toilet bowl, Akemi felt a light tap on her shoulder. A tap from a finger, and a very cold finger. She gasped in surprise and ran out of the stall.

"Was that you?" She faced Gemima. "Someone tapped on my shoulder. Was that you?" But how could have it been her? Gemima was standing by the mirrors, and Akemi was just inside a stall. She couldn't have tapped her shoulder and ran back to the mirrors that quickly. And the finger that touched her was cold. Not just a normal cold, but ghostly cold.

Akemi tried to collect herself and took deep breaths. "That scared me way too much." She forced a smile. "It was probably my imagination, you know, with all the ghost talk and stuff" She sighed. Probably, Akemi thought, because deep down, she knew that something, or someone was haunting this bathroom, and they loved to play around.

Gemima crept over to a sink on the far side of the bathroom. She studied it with utmost scrutiny. She started to ask something, but suddenly Akemi gave a loud gasp from inside a stall. "What is it?" asked Gem, peering over in her direction.
Akemi stood in front of her, looking rightly spooked. "Someone tapped on my shoulder." She breathed. "Was that you?"

Gemima glanced nervously around the bathroom. "...No, I was right here the whole time."
Akemi took a few deep breaths. "It was probably my imagination, you know, with all the ghost talk and stuff." she said sheepishly.

Gem nodded sagely. "Yeah, probably. I have heard plenty of ghost stories about this place, but there haven't been any hauntings in here for decades." She gently patted Akemi on the shoulder. "It's probably nothing."

Feeling quite sure of herself now, Gemima headed back over to the row of sinks in front of the mirrors. She stooped down to examine one with the utmost scrutiny.
"Have you heard the story of the Chamber of Secrets?" She asked aloud. "It was this whole event that happened in the 90s, with a giant Basilisk going around Petrifying students." She rose from the base of the sink with disappointment. "It's said that one of the sinks in this very bathroom can open the entrance..."

Gem stopped short and giggled to herself. She hadn't meant for those last few sentences to come out sounding so scary. Maybe the eerie atmosphere was affecting her. How interesting! She wondered if she could find that telltale snake carving, though. Uncovering an ancient legend--now that sounded like adventure.

"I don't suppose you speak Parseltongue?" It was a joke, evident by her tone of voice, but Gemima certainly wouldn't mind if her new acquaintance could actually talk to snakes.

"Yeah, my dad told me about it once," Akemi replied. She was scared enough, and now Gemima had to bring up the 50-foot Basilisk that used to terminate students with its bright yellow eyes. The abandoned toilets were the perfect place to mention mega killer snakes, anyway. "He went into a lot of detail. Pretty sure I couldn't sleep that night." She laughed sheepishly. "My sister still teases me about it."

Though Akemi was practically shaking in her boots, the idea of adventure (and finding treasure) kept her in the dirty bathroom. She smiled to herself, realizing that her new friend/adventure buddy was keeping her there, too. A sudden thought passed her mind, but before she could say it aloud, Gemima spoke once again.

"I don't suppose you speak Parseltongue?" The tone of her voice indicated that it was a joke, but the dumb part of Akemi started theorizing if she had the talent of Parseltongue or not. She grinned, "Nope, pretty sure I don't. But maybe if we encounter a snake on our quest, my snake speaking powers will activate." Akemi hoped that her jokes would ease the tension of being in a haunted filthy bathroom.

The thought from earlier came back to her. She repositioned her feet on the moldy tile and looked Gemima in the eyes. "Um, I have a quick question." She smiled awkwardly, "Would it be okay if I called you Gem? I thought the nickname suited you. . . but it's okay if you don't want me to call you that! If there are any nicknames you want to go by just let me know!" Akemi felt her face burn up, "Oh! You can also call me Kiki if you would like." She sighed, her whole face as red as a tomato. She mumbled out her last words, "My friends call me Kiki."

Akemi's eyes went wide at the mention of the Basilisk, and as she admitted that she'd heard the story before, Gemima wondered if she'd gone a bit too far. She didn't want to petrify the other girl with her speculations (no pun intended). She paused her search, and looked over to Akemi, concerned.

"But maybe if we encounter a snake on our quest, my snake speaking powers will activate!" Akemi was saying. Gem snorted at that.

"That would certainly be impressive. Let me know if they do awaken!" A wave of relief washed over her--so she hadn't scared her off after all. Still, there was respect to be had, since the Hufflepuff had stuck around in this-- Gemima looked around again and wrinkled her nose-- disgusting bathroom. She was beginning to think that coming here had been a huge waste of time. Maybe there wasn't actually anything cool waiting to be found...

"Um, I have a quick question."
Akemi's voice interrupted Gemima's mounting discouragement. She cleared her throat in surprise and looked over from her position by the floor. "Yes?"

Akemi shifted awkwardly where she stood and gave her a crooked smile. "Would it be okay if I called you Gem?" she wondered. The girl in question faltered for a moment.

Would it be okay? she asked herself. Her eyes drifted to the ground, and she watched a stray trickle of water snake among the tiles. The nickname used to be only for her sister, Cath, but she had changed so much in the past months. She looked back up at Akemi. This girl seemed friendly enough; very bubbly and sweet, too. Gemima sighed. Why am I overthinking this?

"Of course!" she said brightly. "Nice to meet you...Kiki." She uttered the last part a bit warily, testing the name out on her tongue. It was a really cute nickname. Her heart warmed, and she couldn't help but match Akemi's smile. But there were other matters still at hand!
Her hand finally ghosted over a ridge in the ancient porcelain, and there was the snake carving, staring up at her. She frowned, feeling disappointment instead of the glowing triumph she had imagined. Gem sighed heavily, and got to her feet. She aimed her torch towards the row of stalls.

"Ah, sorry for making you stick around in here," she said, drooping sadly. "Maybe this is just an old, dirty, bathroom. My adventure is turning out to be a failure."

"Hey, no need to feel down." Akemi walked toward Gem and placed her hand on her shoulder. "Those drafts we've been feeling? I bet there's a ghost here." She moved in front of Gem and squatted slightly to meet her eyes. "And I've been having a lot of fun. You're really fun to hang out with Gem."

Akemi didn't like when people were sad. Especially her friends. And Gem was like a friend to her now. No. . .

She was her friend.

Poor Gem needed cheering up. And though she didn't know what made her laugh, she wanted to at least make her crack a smile. That was her specialty, right? Making people laugh during the toughest times and being stupidly optimistic, even if she's in a dirty ass bathroom that used to hide a giant soul-seeking snake, and to mention, is haunted.

A stupid grin formed on Akemi's face as she strode towards a moldy wall."We still have that treasure to look for, right?" She knocked on the wall. "Maybe they stuffed it in the wall. I bet if we knock on it in a specific order, a secret door will open and a bunch of galleons and rubies will be inside." She knocked three times fastly, two slowly, and three times fastly again. A simple rhythm, but Akemi still had hope. . .

A bit of dust fell from the ceiling and landed on her shoes. She gasped in delight and turned to Gem."Gem! Maybe there is a treasure after all!" She looked up at the area where the dust had fallen "I think there's a secret hatch right on top of us-!"

A dark fluffy object fell right on Akemi's face.

Shit.

"Ew ew ew ew!" Akemi screamed as she threw the patch of mold onto the floor. Stupid mold. It was one of the things she hated the most. Was that the treasure that this dank place had in store for them? Akemi felt scammed.

She sighed a deep sigh before putting back on a smile. She was trying to cheer up Gem, after all. She shouldn't be the one moping around just because a stupid fungi fell smack onto her face. "Okay. . . Maybe the treasure isn't there. But come on Gem! Don't lose hope yet! Maybe there's some carving of sorts on the sinks. . ."

I wasted her time, and now I probably look really stupid...ugh, I should just head back to my dorm room--

Someone placed a hand on her shoulder. Gemima looked up to see Akemi giving her a reassuring smile. She jolted a bit in surprise--surely the other girl would have left by now. After all, there was nothing at all of note to do or find here.

"And I've been having a lot of fun. You're really fun to hang out with, Gem." Akemi finished.
The latter blinked once, then twice. "Really?" she whispered. "...Thank you."
She didn't really know what else to say, but she was glad to hear that her efforts hadn't all been for nothing. Maybe she had even made a new friend. It was funny how things like that could happen.

Gemima was shaken out of her thoughts by Akemi rapping on a nearby wall. She quirked an eyebrow and went over to observe. The wall let loose a small shower of dust, which rained down on the two girls' heads.
Gem squeaked in alarm and stepped back, hoping to avoid a possible sneezing fit. A sizable crack appeared in the ceiling. Her eyes widened.
"Uh, I don't think that's a good idea, the place is unstable enough as it is--"

Something puffed and black soared out of the crack, and landed on Akemi's face. She let out a shriek, and she hopped around before flinging the mold onto the floor.
Gemima let out a loud snort behind her, and almost fell onto the floor laughing. "Oh my god—" she gasped, hurrying over. "Are—Merlin, that was funny—are you okay??" She placed her own hand on Akemi's shoulder, and swayed shakily, snickers still slipping out through her lips.
The Hufflepuff seemed fine for the time being, but Gemima stayed there, trying to recover.
"Thanks for that. I needed a good laugh." She chirped, grinning.

Gem sniffed and looked around the bathroom again, hands on her hips.
"One more search around here wouldn't hurt," she agreed, following Akemi in the direction of the sinks. "I found the snake carving, but since neither of us speak Parseltongue, it wouldn't be of much use—waugh!"

Her foot caught on something, and she pitched forward onto the grimy tiles. Gem groaned and looked to see what had tripped her up. She bent forward in awe. "Akemi! Look at this!"
There was a loose tile that had been knocked askew by her fall. Gem pushed it aside, revealing a secret hole in the floor. She stuck her hand down into it without hesitation, and felt around for something, anything.

Finally, just as she was about to lose hope again, her fingers grazed the corner of.. a box? There was a lock on it too. Her eyes lit up, and she yanked the box out of the hole. A giant cloud of dust poofed up right in her face.

"Not again—!"
The box went flying as Gemima doubled over again, sneezing furiously. She curled into a ball as she waited for the attack to subside. Curse her sensitive nose!

"Akemi! Look at this!"

Akemi turned to see Gemima's new discovery. "Huh-"

A box flew into her face, causing Akemi to fall onto the ground, her face buried in her palms. "Ow ow ow ow ow..." she mumbled under her breath. She stayed in that position for a few more seconds before lifting her head. Pain throbbed in Akemi's forehead. She was fine. It was just a headache, right? The only other thing that bothered her was the massive pain in her nose, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Gemima was curled up near her, sneezing repeatedly. "Oh, crap-" Akemi scooted to her and placed her hand on her back, ignoring her heavily bleeding nose. "Are you okay, Gem?" She patted her back. "It's alright. Take a few deep breaths."

Akemi got up and picked up the box, trying her best to ignore her reflection in the cracked mirrors. Her face felt bad, and she didn't want to look at it. In volleyball, Akemi learned that if she ever looked at an injury, it always seemed to hurt more. So she would attend to it after the game was over (if it wasn't severe).

She inspected the box, sniffling as she did. Was her nose running? Maybe allergy season had begun...

Akemi's eyes widened as she beamed. She turned around and practically bounced to Gemima. "Gem!" She bounced up and down, a grin on her face. "It's treasure! I told you, we just had to look!" She looked down at the box again, her grin falling into a frown. "It has a lock on it though... Maybe there's a key hidden somewhere..."
