Della focused on getting hit by spells as her feet stopped moving. And she was successful—except it wasn't because she was excellent at evading spells this time. None had been aimed at her. Well, that was a relief.

The smoke started to clear, and she could see her teammate, Vale. Hunter was sitting on the ground, and Vale was also on the ground. Except she wasn't fighting the opposing team? She was looking for something? Wait, was she holding a bug? Della began to doubt her position as captain; she wasn't quite rallying the troops. Maybe leadership wasn't her strong suit.

Even though Hunter was also on the ground, he was able to get a direct hit on Avery. The Curse of the Bogies. Della winced; that was a nasty fate for the Slytherin boy.

She turned to her other teammate, hoping she could at least salvage their strategy with Cody. However, Cody had that look in his eyes. Della feared that he might get bored with being a team player. And she was right. Cody aimed his wand toward her and Vale, laying down another blanket of smoke on the dueling field.

"Cody!" Della let out a frustrated cry, "What are you doing now?!"

As the smokescreen clears, the focus of the duel seems to shift, with cracks in planning and strategy starting to show. From amidst the smokescreen, Incendios come out towards the duelists. Clair, perhaps not having realized what she was signing up for when she’d agreed to help Avery, froze in place. Lucky for her, too, as the spell targeting her barely whizzed past her. Avery himself was not so lucky. Poor Avery, with his nose dripping mucus and fighting hard against the effects of the curse, caught up with his attacking spell. This distraction would cost the Slytherin, though, as he tagged himself in the side by an Incendio. As luck would have it, his shirt immediately caught on fire.

Hunter, too was not faring too well; what with being surrounded by a myriad of blue bubbles courtesy of Della, and being made to dance what could only be described as a shockingly bad caricature of ballet because of Avery's spell. When it came to brining the hurt, though, Draven, king.

The Slytherin boy continued his reign of jinxes, this time connecting Hunter with another of those knockback jinxes he seems to favour, leaving the Ravenclaw looking rather battered. Team Liana seemed to have become aware of this threat, as all three members switched their attention upon the boy from merlin dorm. Maggie executed a surprisingly well-cast Dancing Feet spell, only to have Draven sidestep out of the way handily. A second curse sent by Hunter met the same fate. Liana herself, perhaps taking Hunter’s lead cast a Sneezing hex at Draven. Not as nasty as Hunter’s curse, but nothing that Ming would want to ever get in the way of.

”Draven is quite something, isn’t he?” Ming commented lightly to the Gryffindor prefect overseeing the event with him. Draven, for all that he approached the event with the mentality of a blunt instrument, was definitely getting results. Perhaps he was the duelist in their year, and not Liana?

In the last round Clair had missed, How on earth had she missed???? The boy had been sitting there like a duck just asking to be hunted, and Clair who was playing the hunter (lol, hunting the Hunter) had missed!
The Ravenclaw girl cursed under her breath, shaking herself out she watched as the boy, Hunter, that she had aimed at got hit by Dancing feet spell, she smiled, well someone had at least hit the boy!
She must have still been mad in the next round, because even if Vale shot a spell at her, Clair did not even notice, she was in a sort of haze of anger at herself still.
The first year stood more or a chance in this duel for two reasons, 1) she had come in late, 2) everyone else was around her age, so they were pretty equal in knowledge of spells, jinxes and hexes.
Clair really needed to get back into it, she looked at Avery who was on fire and had a super snotty nose, "Sorry, I'll try better, I was just mad at myself, for missing Hunter" She said, she lifted her wand and got ready to cast a spell, and hopefully she would hit her target.

He mayyy have ruffled some feathers, as was proved by the three spells hurling towards his face simultaneously. Fortunately, the other team had the aim of drunken chickens trying trying to wield wands with their nondominant wings. Draven dodged lazily sending an elegantly cast flippendo in Hunter's direction.

His luck ran out just then (or was it skill?). Because a green flash nicked him, sending the boy into a sneezing fit. Draven's eyes watered as he stumbled backwards, digging in his robe pocket for a second handkerchief. The rule was - always keep two. First one in his breast pocket, for anyone he might encounter who needed one. The second in his back pocket, for himself. Unfortunately, his pants HAD no back pockets.

So he was left blocking the whirlwind of sneezes with the crook of his elbow before he finally found the black satin square. It was a strong spell, one that just wouldn't go away. Dray cursed the witch silently, willing the sneezes to disperse.

Through watery eyes, the boy sent another spell flying off. His momentary distraction might have cost him this round, but there was no point in just standing there useless as two toads in a scarf.

Cody giggled like a rambunctious imp who just got out of a magical jail imprisoning him. At least, that was how it felt. He felt the need to show off his insane personality in every array possible. Ah, but did his teammates think of him as a traitor yet? He personally didn't want to duel under the command of his horrid gryffindor enemy who thought it wise to extinguish the flames he had inflicted upon during his Quidditch biases fight... with Valerie. Two gryffindors who apparently thought they were better than Cody, than Hufflepuff.

Now... he hoped that by hitting Avery with Incendio would be a lifesaver. Well... Cody's lifesaver. In this case, it must've been a good choice, since he didn't seem to be targeted at all... perhaps his instinctive target and spell choosing seemed to be wise- he would need to consider what else to do... perhaps hide behind someone? Sit on someone? Use someone as a shield? Scream in mock pain? Be dramatic? Or part goblin up and be the bigger part goblin for once? Or, a better choice, take vengeance and cast another spell in an anger that doesn't exist in any part or time in the current situation.

xxxxHunter's dance became more outrageous by the second, the amount of stamina to stay up was ridiculous. Even though he focused on his breathing, his movements kept him in a rather rigged spot. He hurled a spell at Draven, but the motion of his arm went into a lasso loop motion by the end and he completely missed. With that, he could see what was coming towards him. Draven retailated with the knockback jinx and Hunter could feel the impact rather greatly.

Hit by a rather strong spell he felt himself stumble backwards stright into a trap of bubbles. Varying in large sizes, Hunter was now trapped within a cage of bubbles. Distracted by the bubbles from a spell he never seen before, his legs picked up in speed. He looked over at Avery to notice his wand up. Hunter smirked at his fellow classmate, impressed by his will to keep attacking.

Hunter was being hunted Good one Clair, lets keep the Hunter puns going!, and was trapped in a tight area with large abrupt movements. He was now the target, and Liana wasn't being focused now. He smiled a bit at that, but he was glad to recieve the incoming spells for another reason as well.

Legs jumping left and right, eventually turning into the "hammer time" dance. He could feel the soreness in his legs increase from slow to exponential.

Hunter placed his wand in his mouth and reached into his robes to reveal two items. A pen and a journal. The pen was a muggle item that he bought from another student. Not requiring a quill and an ink bottle on him at all times was well worth the cost. With quick movements, he flipped upon the journal and began to what seemed like swift scribbling. The journal was Hunter's personal book that contained information on his experience with spells, potions, and people. He was writing the symptoms and feelings of his legs, the impact on his chest with the attempts to catch his own breath. He included the slight singed feeling Vale gave him, and what the irritating feeling in his eyes was like from the Fumos and self-cast Verdimilious.

After the quick notes, and writing mid-battle like an idiot, Hunter could feel the switch in him flip. He was surprised he could keep up an act unlike himself for that long. Even raising his voice more than usual or ever. With a sigh of relief and being tired as his legs kept going, he placed his wand back in his hand and put away the pen and journal.

He looked around and eventually saw Liana through the bubbles surrounding him. Hunter was surprised by how strong she seemed, and he was glad to know she hadn't gone down yet. Maggie seemed to be more than fine, but Hunter did wonder how she was doing mentally after Draven dodged her rather excellent display of the dancing feet spell. Just a little longer, Hunter thought, just a little more.

With that, Hunter looked over towards Liana, his voice went back to its usual quiet and meek form. A voice that looked for sympathy and kindness in others, "Miss Kerr, I have a plan and I'm going to see it through. Could you please use our other rune? You look like you're about to collapse!" A look of dismay and concern was on Hunter's face.

To that, he witnessed the massive flame abrupt from Avery. Hunter was a bit surprised but decided to just sigh as he knew it should have been expected. He lifted his wand in preparation for his own goal.

In between shooting snot out of his sinuses, he managed to aim his wand at Hunter, utter an incantation through his stuffy nose, and weakly draw the wand movement. To his surprise, his Dancing Feet Spell struck its target, making Hunter dance a crazy ballet that looked toe-crushing.

"Urgh," he grumbled, now thinking that he made a mistake, because Hunter's quick hammertime legs only disturbed his vision and made his head hurt harder. "Hunter, your dances are just getting worse, go back to the butt-scootching will ya?" he couldn't help commentating.

He noticed Draven had similarly side-stepped two incoming spells from Liana's team, only to get hit by the third. His teammate's non-stop sneezing told him which spell it was. Gosh, was that team just spewing COVID at them today? Put those three in quarantine already.

"Don't worry about it, Clair! You got this! Just, like, focus on how much you want get back at the world, or something!" he yelled through Draven's handkerchief, which was quickly getting completely soaked by yellow grime.

Before he knew it, a jet of fire shot out of Cody's wand and caught onto his robe, springing from his waist and quickly spreading without flickering out. His eyes widened, and he yelped in shock. "Cody!" he hollered, before breaking into a fit of coughing, "Oh you are so dead!" Sure, a few tickling flames was hot but nothing too bad, but these ones were big scorchers, and Cody looked like he had malice in his eyes.

Judging by Barfield's dissatisfied mewling, it was evident that she had indeed lost control of her teammates. In all likelihood, she had been so focused on her petty vendetta against Liana that she utterly disregarded the wishes and suggestions of her own allies. And now there she was, still ganging up on Team Kerr alongside Chen, while her own team was firing at Team Chen. The lack of unity there was pitiable.

Back to the duel.

Mirador failed to evade Liana's spell, even though she was more focused on casting it correctly than on aiming it well. The Sneezing Hex wasn't something she had used before - save for back when she learned it in Professor Zahid's class. The effects weren't really that harmful, but they were fairly amusing to observe, which was the main reason she cast it in the first place - it looked like the boy who was going through some weird phase needed to lighten up. Maybe sneezing a bit could help him dislodge the stick that seemed to be shoved up an inconvenient orifice, making him act all edgy and snappish.

Hunter was still doing his own thing, which at the moment seemed to be writing in a journal while a three-way duel was raging around him. She shook her head in a small disappointed motion; the boy was about as insane as Ashwood, only his insanity was far less useful in the current situation. And he even dared to suggest that she heal herself, when he was clearly the one in need of medical aid. Not just for observable bruises, either; there was probably a brain injury from early childhood that somehow got overlooked.

"I'm fine, Hunter, this is nothing compared to some of my other duels," she assured him. True, there was some dizziness in her head and dull aching all over her body and she was maybe one or two spells away from losing consciousness. But she had been through worse, and it seemed like a waste to use the healing rune on herself -seeing Liana get better would probably just make her foes focus on her again. "It's not my rune either, it's ours, and I think you need it more. So go ahead." With that, she turned her full attention back to the chaos of flying spells.

More than a little curious to keep tabs on the promising up-and-comers, Evelynn watched the match with precision. It wasn't only the accuracy with which they aimed their spells, or the consistency with which they were able to draw intended outcomes from their wands that begged for her attention. More than that, she watched for strategic minds and shrewd calculation. A good leader was one that had good awareness of a situation, could take their own and their teammate's strengths and weaknesses into account, and develop a dynamic plan of attack fluid to the context of the situation. With a little polish, these students here could prove to be valudable allies, or worthy opponents. Or they could be utter wastes of space better used as scapegoats and distractions in an emergency situation. Evelynn sought to categorize them accordingly.

Granted, none of these games would ever provide any sort of definitive assurance. Kerr, for example, was very clearly able as a caster, but her prowess had earned her a very definitive target above her head. She was a threat. Someone to watch and take out quickly. She could be an easier target for the likes of hags who sought talent among those who felt ostracized by her peers. Then again, with her relative level of fame and attention, she might be one who could be easily found out. She did not blend in the way that many of the other victims had.

"They certainly do seem to have it out for the team with Miss Kerr," Evelynn murmured, inclining her head towards Hui. As the match progressed, she split her attention evenly between the various participants, watching for the way they moved, how they took initiative, the way they took advantage of positioning and environmental factors. "And I think some revision on enunciation under pressure is absolutely in order," came the assertion, lips pursed at teh reminder of how many spells had completely backfired off the start.

At the boy's comment on the young Mirador, Evelynn was prompted to search for his position in the raging battle. "Is he?" Eyes squinted slightly at his performance, evaluating his recovery. "Mnn.." The hum reverberating her lips clearly depicted that she was not quite so sure on that impressive evaluation. Glancing down to the journal she had opened, notes already jotted down in plenty so as not to forget a single detail she had managed to snare, she spoke up, "While I would not say he is doing poorly, neither would I call it impressive. I will give you that he appears to have masterful control of his wand, at the very least, but his aim could use some work. Barfield, Ashwood and Chen have all landed more hits than he. In fact, were it not for the fact that one of his targets was himself—perhaps a bit of stage fright—I would say that Mister Chen is performing rather admirably.

"And actually.." With a tap of a finger on one name in particular, she glanced up in search of the Ravenclaw boy among the bunch. "I am rather impressed with Argentum. Like Kerr, he seems to be drawing quite a bit of attention. He will need to improve his awareness and ability to remove himself from the line of fire, but to have taken as many hits as he has and still be standing... I had always thought him rather bookish, admittedly. It seems he has a stamina that defies initial logic."

xxxxAnd that was yet another miss. Honestly, despite her poor dueling skills, Maggie was starting to get irritated. She'd really started feeling useless. How come she, Maggie Hawkins, was the one with the most health? How come she was coming out relatively unscathed when Hunter and Liana, her teammates, were far more skilled than she? That was probably why. Because if the others could manage to take out Liana and Hunter, Maggie wouldn't be much threat on her own.

Seeing as she couldn't land a single stupid hit.

It felt silly to be getting frustrated and upset over, but it held true. Maggie, though she didn't show it or feel the need to display it at all, was a deeply insecure person. If she couldn't provide for the team, couldn't boast any sort of real advantage, or contribute in a meaningful way, was she really worth playing with?

Choosing to push it out of her mind, Maggie turned her attention to Liana, who was quickly deteriorating in health. Losing it faster than Maggie could say 'shoot'. The girl likely had less health than anyone else in the game by now, and it was starting to show in how she presented herself. "C'mon, guys, don't give up! We've got this in the bag!" Honestly, Maggie was starting to seriously doubt that, but confidence was key!
