Luka is a half-blood. His mother is from a pure-blood family, and in phase of teenage rebellion, started dating a muggle man in secret. She ended up pregnant with his child at nineteen, and defied her family for him and her unborn child. Nine months later, Luka Sylvester was born in a muggle hospital in Ireland.

Unfortunately, they found their relationship wasn't meant to be. They had too many opposing values from their different backgrounds, which became a wedge between them. They also disagreed about whether Luka should be raised in the muggle world or the wizarding world, which became a major point of contention. They divorced soon after his birth.

Luka's mother was unemployed and struggling after being rejected from her contacts in the wizarding world. Due to her unstable finances, though they shared custody, she agreed to let the father raise Luka until his magic manifested. She would find a job and secure a flat in the wizarding world, and retrieve Luka once he turned eight, at which point he should have had his first instance of magic.

Luka’s father decided that Luka's mother would be uninterested in Luka if he turned out non-magical, so he decided to bring the child as far from any magical influence as possible. He took him to a rural village off the coast of Ireland, where a muggle couple was willing to take them in until they could get to their feet. The couple's daughter was a witch, but the muggles were deadset on their opinion that magic is wrong and unnatural. They disowned their daughter. Sympathetic to Luka's father's perspective, they advised him to keep Luka away from magic and hopefully, he'll turn out 'normal.'

While living there, Luka's father changed Luka's name to Cyprus to distance him from his mother, though the change wasn't legal. Cyprus spent his childhood unaware of his magical heritage, enrolled in a muggle elementary school so small all the students from every grade took lessons in the same two classrooms. He grew up running through the woods with his friends and climbing the rocky cliffs at the beach.

Cyprus had a good but relaxed relationship with his father. His father had a very hands-off parenting style, giving the boy essentially free-reign over what he wanted to do, causing the child to be outdoors more often than not. Cyprus was well educated in reading and math, but his rural village meant his education in global issues and history was highly limited.

Unsurprisingly, Cyprus' father's plan did not work. Though he could not recall an instance where his son used magic, Cyprus' mother still came to collect him the day after his eighth birthday. The arrangement changed, to where Cyprus was to live most of the year with his mother, and spend only the summers with his father.

Luka took back his birth name, albeit somewhat reluctantly. After an incident of accidental magic shortly after moving in with his mother, he was given a more magical education and introduced to the wizarding world in preparation of entering Hogwarts when he turned eleven. His mother offered to remove the scars he gathered over the course of his magic-less childhood, but he refused, seeing them as fragments of his life with sentimental value.

Contrasting his father, Luka's mother is very warm and attentive, if a little nagging, almost as if she's making up for lost time by smothering him in affection. Her efforts are not unappreciated, and Luka builds a decent relationship with her before he leaves for Hogwarts.

First Instance of Magic: Luka's true first use of magic was undramatic. When he was six, he accidentally used levitation while skipping stones. The pebble flew across the water, barely skimming the surface. Surprised by his sudden success at an activity he was previously terrible at, his concentration broke and the rock plopped into the sea. Unaware that it was magic, he just assumed he made a lucky toss.

Throughout his childhood, he used magic in minor, nearly unnoticeable ways. Surely that knot on the tree was always there, and the daisies he was growing for a school project didn't sprout overnight because of something as unrealistic as magic. He just didn't observe that tree enough, and the flowers were just his talent for growing things...right?

After moving in with his mother, Luka had his first larger demonstration of magic. When he knocked a glass of milk off the table, he dived to catch it. He missed, but it levitated an inch of the floor. He was so shocked he immediately dropped it, but it was evidence enough to his mother.
