Slowly but surely, the castle was fallen to sleep for the evening. The majority of the Slytherin house had mostly retired to their dormitories and curled up beneath their warm blankets for the night. Though, per usual, Illowy was the last awake, and taken up in her usually self-appointed post in the Common Room, reading and studying and continuing her quiet watch over her house. It had been a long time since Illowy had known a full night's rest, and past experiences had left her with a heightened alertness to anything that seemed amiss.

Her eyes tried to stay focused on her work, twirling her pencil through her fingers in an effort to concentrate but something felt... off. The strange sense jumped into her throat when she thought she heard the faint echo of steps hurrying past the stairs the led into the damp basements. Illowy was quite familiar with nearly every set of steps that routinely came close to their door, and this wasn't a pair she recognized. Perhaps it was her own paranoia curiosity getting the best of her, but she set her things aside, daring to quietly creep out from the safety of her house to investigate.

She listened closely as she wandered through the corridors, following the sound of the strange, soft footsteps. For a moment they seemed to pause before the snake peered around a corner and caught sight of what she could only assume in the dim light was a first or second year; some sort of underclassman.

Truth be told, Illowy was never one that a person might want to catch sight of in the dark; she didn't have the warmest countenance. While she may have been a fair and willowy looking creature, her tone always stoic, with cold, pale blue eyes that seemed look right through a person, never quite at them. She could be an intimidating sight if one didn't know her well enough.

Illowy turned the corner as she raised her wand, "Lumos." she whispered, her wand tip lighting up as she started towards the girl, "Child, are ye out of yer bloody mind, runnin' around on yer own at night?" she demanded in a hushed tone.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

The picture of innocence to worry that she was a Prefect. Illowy couldn't help but roll her eyes, "I'm not. An' yer lucky I'm not somethin' worse." what was it with this batch of first and second years, running around the castle like they hadn't a lick of sense? Couldn't they understand how unsafe it was to be out in the castle at night? Much less alone?

Illowy lowered her wand slightly, icy eyes looking the child up and down, "Ye probably barely know which end to hold yer wand from..." the snake muttered, "Do ye even have yer wand on ye?" she asked. The older witch would really judge the girl's level of self preservation if she'd been dumb enough to go on this little adventure without her wand, "It isn't safe to be out here alone at night."

For a moment, the older girl paused, listening hard around them as her eyes swept quickly through the corridors. The last thing she needed was for them to get caught by a prefect or a staff member. She'd managed four years of school with a perfect record, and this girl was hardly going to be the reason it was broken, "What house are ye in? I'll take ye back before you get yerself into trouble." it was less of an offer and more of an order, honestly. Illowy was a paranoid sort, and honestly no one could've blamed her. She knew better then anyone what lurked in the dark. However, despite her cold and abrasive nature, Illowy did genuinely want to see the girl back to her house safely. She would never admit it, but she had a soft place for the younger students. They were so shiny and new, so unaware of how dangerous and unpredictable the world was. Of course eventually they'd have to learn, but it was nice to imagine she could do something to bide that time as long as possible.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Why wasn't she surprised the girl was in Hufflepuff? Honestly, Illowy hadn't the best track record getting along with that particular house, but that didn't change the fact that she felt a duty to make sure the girl got back safely. The puffball however, seemed less then pleased with Illowy‘s cold assessment of the situation, taking on her own serious expression that crossed the fourth year as a pout. At least with the child’s insistence that she knew how to get back to her house, she got confirmation that the girl was only a first year.

“I wasn’t asking yer permission, child. There's some dangers here yer too young to understand, and wandering around alone and unable to defend yerself could get ye killed.” She warned, "An' I doubt ye know enough spells to protect yerself if it came to it." that was spoken more from experience. First year had been... traumatizing to say the least. She'd never quite recovered.

The older snake lowered her wand, making a motion for the girl to follow as she looked back around the corner she’d come from, Nox.” She muttered, her light quickly going out again. The last thing they needed was to draw any additional attention to themselves, especially not a Professor doing evening rounds or a Prefect, “C’mon. I have to pass near Hufflepuff to get to the basement stairs anyway, so you’re stuck in my protection regardless, poppet.”

When everything seemed quiet enough, Illowy started in the direction of Hufflepuff house, looking back over her shoulder to make sure the young one was still there, "Ye've not seen anything...odd, while ye've been wandering have ye?" she asked, "No strange shadows or...unusual creatures." she was trying to pick and choose her words carefully, mostly for the sake of the girl. After all, she didn't want to risk actually scaring the child.

The girl's abrupt and matter-of-fact manner of assuring the snake that she'd not seen anything out of the ordinary was nothing less then amusing; even managing to pull a short scoff and a hint of a smirk from the otherwise serious upperclassman. At least there was nothing out of the ordinary. That was enough for her.

Illowy imagined she could have taken the time to go into some sort of more in depth lecture about the dangers of wandering around the castle in the darkness, the potential horrors that may lurk in the shadows and the repercussions of those horrors... but what was the point of that in the middle of what Illowy considered to be a potential minefield? It would only scare the child, and the only thing more annoying then escorting an over-confident first year back to her house was escorting a sniveling and panicked mess of a child back to her house.

To her surprise, the girl seemed to be trying to make conversation. The confusion wasn't hidden in her face as she ran a hand through her hair awkwardly, "Illowy Magnard. Fourth year." she replied.

The older witch wasn't the most accustomed to small talk; or really any kind of talk outside of her own small circle of friends. Despite her attempt to be better at making firsts, she wasn't very good at people. People were annoying and usually dull. Not to mention they tended to let you down a lot. The only people she stayed relatively protective over no matter what, was her own house.

"And... yer name?" she returned, equally as awkward.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
