. @Leo Del Mar. Sorting Ceremony 2021-2022
The sorting ceremony. It had been exactly two years since Logan had been sorted into Hufflepuff and she had loved the house ever since. Her family had been rooting on her getting into Ravenclaw, but no one had seemed disappointed when she got into the house of the badgers.
Logan listened to the steady chatter of the students around her, it was comforting and she could imagine that the new students were both excited and nervous to be sorted into the house they would be in for the next seven years. Glancing around the room, a soft smile graced the third years face as she saw her best friend out of the corner of her eyes. He was probably just as excited as she was when it came to the first years being sorted. Carefully she listened to the Head Master start his introduction, not surprised by the sound of the sorting hat speaking. She had been surprised her first year, startled actually as she had never heard a hat speak before. She had even been a bit startled her second year when the hat spoke, it was not like it was something she consistently heard.
With a sigh, the third year Hufflepuff listened to the singing of the hat. This was something that always seemed to take forever, first the song, then the students going up one at a time to be sorted. The list seemed to be extremely long that year, even longer than previous years. The girl wondered how many of the students would be form Hufflepuff, a lot of people did not think they were that great of a house, but Logan had discovered that they were quite cheerful people.
Listening to the names being called out, Logan did not recognize any of them. She honestly did not expect too as she did not know many young witches and wizards other than her younger brothers. Finally paying attention again, Logan clapped happily when she noticed that the latest young wizard was sorted into Hufflepuff.

The massive doors of the Great Hall heaved open with a long groan, giving way to reveal a decorated room that lived up to his name. Leo pressed a hand to his stomach to calm the butterflies that were currently taking up gymnastics in there. The other students muttered to one another as they tried to see what was going on, but Leo stayed silent and tried to tilt his head over the throng, looking out for the girls he had met on the train ride to this place.
The sorting hat began it's annual song and Leo listened curiously. He wondered what kind of wizard would've even thought to have a hat decide on what house to sort students into. He liked to think that this was the level of magic he could one day aspire to. In his pensiveness, Leo barely heard his name read out on the registry. He jumped as someone gently shoved him forward in the crowd and started making his way up to the chair. Each footstep seemed to take hours, with the clack clack clack of his brightly shined shoes echoing in his mind far louder than he was sure they were to everyone else.
To everyone else, the hat must have barely touched a hair on his head before calling out the house name, but Leo had the benefit (Along with the headmaster, Solomon Lear) of being close enough to hear the hat faintly murmur a sympathetic "Oh." Before making it's final verdict.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
Leo smiled coyly as the Hufflepuff table applauded him. He stood and tottered over, still dazed. "Gracious." He muttered as he reached the table. "Is it that scary for everyone?" He didn't quite seem to be addressing anyone in particular, but a few laughed as he sat down next to Logan and looked up at her with a goofy, crooked half-smile.

. @Leo Del Mar. Logan watched as the new first year Hufflepuff made his way over to their table and took the open seat next to her. A smile was on her face as he looked at her with a crooked half-smile as he spoke. Already she could tell she would be able to get along with this boy.
"I would say everyone was at least a little scared when they were first sorted. Who would not be slightly scared when a talking hat is being placed on your head." The third year Hufflepuff smiled down at the first year as she answered his question. She knew she was scared, scared of disappointing her family, scared of the future. Who would not be scared when you were having a major decision made for you that would impact your like for the next seven years.
Slowly hold her hand out for the boy to shake, Logan introduced herself. "Logan Baird, third year," she introduced herself quickly. She may not have had the greatest of summers before returning to Hogwarts, but she was not going to ruin it for a new student.
"So, what are you most excited about now that you are officially a Hogwarts student?" she questioned as she turned to see the next student make their way up to be sorted. She was curious about this new student, but did not want to seem rude and as if she was ignoring the rest of the new students.

"Leo Del Mar, first year." Was all Leo managed to breathe out for a long moment. He tried puffing out his anxiety with a heavy exhale and smacked his head on the table in relief. "It's nice to meet you Logan." He murmured into the wood of the surface his face was pressed against.
He raised his head again when Logan asked her question, then wondered for a moment what he was most excited about. Seeing new magical creatures? Learning complex spells? Studying under seasoned wizards and witches that had hundreds, maybe thousands of stories to tell? "I'm most excited for... Cake!" The word choked out of his mouth in a moment of surprise as the delicious treat appeared in front of him. Students were making their requests left and right and one-by-one the meals were summoned directly to their plates.
"Sorry- Not cake, I meant-." Leo sighed and gently whacked a hand against his own forehead. "I guess excitement is taking the back seat for my nerves right now." He tried to laugh off his momentary awkwardness, but it was plain to see he was nervous about the impression he was going to make on his fellow students.

. @Leo Del Mar. Logan laughed softly as the first year smacked their face into the table and mumbled into the wood. She found the boy to be rather amusing already. She did not normally interact with first years, so this was impressive. A grin formed on the older girl's face as the cake appeared in front of the boy and she laughed softly for the second time that night. Slowly she reached over and grabbed the slice of cake that appeared in front of her and slowly dug in.
"Cake is great, yes," she giggled as she glanced over at the surprised first year. She could see that he was nervous and it was only confirmed when he started stuttering about how he was not excited about cake and that his nerves were currently the ones in charge. "It is okay to be nervous, at least you did not trip immediately after getting sorted. I have seen that occur before." Logan did not trip walking to the Hufflepuff table, but she did trip when she entered the common room.
Taking another bite of her cake, she nodded towards the rest of the Hufflepuff table. "There are very few people you should be nervous about in this house. Everyone is great and I doubt there is anyone in Hufflepuff who will laugh at you for doing something wrong, I just hope you like food." She could just imagine the amount of food that was consistently in the common room or the dorms.

Leo looked up at the older girl with a dizzy grin. "Well, I like to cook, so hopefully that'll serve me well."
He looked directly up at the floating candles above his head, the orange light flickering in his dark brown irises. He looked back at Logan. "Do you know any books that would be good to read before classes begin? I'm worried I'll make a fool of myself." His earnest expression told Logan that this request was genuine. "I read through some of Hogwarts, a history.- Oh- and A History of Magic, but some of these books are so difficult to understand!" He ran a hand through his hair in exasperation.
He was nervous about his classes. Of the three of his siblings, Leo felt he had had perhaps the least magical talent in terms of power. His brother and sister had experienced much more flamboyant first instances of magic, while Leo had sprouted a garden of delicate daisies. In his own eyes, he was on track to be the weakest wizard in his family. Not to mention, all of the magic practiced in Hogwarts was doubtless significantly different to the style that was practiced in his home. Heck, even the size of the cauldron he was expected to buy shocked him when he bought his school supplies, as he was used to a significantly larger one at home.

. @Leo Del Mar. A grin formed on Logan's face at the mention of the boy being able to cook. "If you can find a way to make food, then you will probably make plenty of friends in no time. There are plenty of parties in the common room and food is always involved." She thought about the number of times she would walk into the common room and there would be trays of food scattered across the tables in the warm room.
Glancing over, she listened to the boy as he asked questions of what book she would recommend. "You might want to skim over your potions book before class, but that would be the only one really. Some of the books seem like they are hard to understand, but the professors will explain everything to you if you do not understand it. Remember you are not going to be the only one confused, there are quite a few first years who will not know what to do." The older girl glanced up as more students were sorted, at this point not really paying attention to who all was being sorted where. She would end up meeting the other first year Hufflepuffs at some point.
She understood how nervous the boy beside her was. Logan had been extremely nervous her first day of classes and had gotten lost three or four times. She slowly made friends though and knew that over time she was going to be okay. Occasionally she would still take the wrong corridor when tired, but nothing major. She knew that at some point the boy was going to be okay he he seemed like someone who was going to make friends easily once he got used to being at Hogwarts.

Leo nodded at Logan's advice and gave her a genuine, grateful smile when she was done. "Thanks for all your help Logan. I don't know what I'd do without you here." He felt quite lucky to know someone who was a bit more familiar with the layout of the school, and if he was being honest, there was something about Logan that just felt so cool in Leo's eyes.
He looked over the table, with food being summoned right in front of their eyes, an indeterminate number of candles floating overhead. He supposed he only had one more question for Logan now. "Does it ever stop being breathtaking? All this?"
Leo came from a magical family, so the phenomena of magic wasn't new to him, but the pomp and circumstance of Hogwarts was alien to him. He grew up on a farm. The domestic magic they used at home was powerful, but underwhelming. Nothing like the enchanted ceilings and moving staircases of the castle. Briefly, Leo thought to himself that if this was the kind of grand welcome they got in first year, what wonders would await him in years to come, when the faculty wouldn't need to coddle them through their first years of magical use.

. @Leo Del Mar. Logan found the boy to be rather kind. Sure, he probably would have gotten along fine without her being there, but the feeling of being needed brought a smile to the girl's face. He reminded her of a much calmer version of her younger brothers. "Thank you, for actually having been willing to sit next to me and introduce yourself." She started out as she looked at all of the other first years around the table, "most of the time the first years will find themselves in clusters at the tables, afraid to talk to the older students." She was one of those students, except she was afraid to talk to the first years as well and had sat by herself.
"No, at least to me it never seems to stop being breathtaking. No matter what year you are in, there always seems to be something new to be amazed by every year." The third year looked up at the floating candles around them, finding comfort in the soft flickering lights. Not only was everything always breathtaking, but the castle seemed to become even more mysterious as the years went on. Logan always seemed to find something else to be curious about and want to solve the mystery of.
Logan looked back down at the boy, no longer transfixed by the candles. "I feel that no matter how long you are here, you will find something that you will always find beautiful. My favorite spot has to be either here, or the courtyard to be honest, I always find both spots so beautiful." Logan knew it was strange to find the great hall beautiful, but there was just something about the floating candles and high ceiling that made it wonderful.
